The ability to assemble mesoscopic colloidal lattices above a surface is important for fundamental studies related with nucleation and crystallization, but also for a variety of technological applications in photonics and micro-engineering. Current techniques based on particle sedimentation above a lithographic template are limited by a slow deposition process and by the use of static templates, which make difficult to implement fast annealing procedures. Here it is demonstrated a method to realize and anneal a series of colloidal lattices displaying triangular, honeycomb or kagome-like symmetry above a structure magnetic substrate. By using a binary mixture of particles, superlattices can be realized increasing further the variety and complexity of the colloidal patterns which can be produced.
The self-assembly of binary nanoparticle superlattices from colloidal mixtures is a promising method for the fabrication of complex colloidal co-crystal structures. However, binary mixtures often form amorphous or metastable phases instead of the thermodynamically stable phase. Here we show that in binary mixtures of differently sized spherical particles, an excess of the smaller component can promote -- and, in some cases, may be necessary for -- the self-assembly of a binary co-crystal. Using computer simulations, we identify two mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon. First, excess smal…
The nucleation and growth kinetics of highly ordered nanocrystal superlattices during the evaporation of nanocrystal colloidal droplets was elucidated by in situ time resolved small-angle x-ray scattering. We demonstrated for the first time that evaporation kinetics can affect the dimensionality of the superlattices. The formation of two-dimensional nanocrystal superlattices at the liquid-air interface of the droplet has an exponential growth kinetics that originates from interface "crushing".
Molecular motors are essential to the living, they generate additional fluctuations that boost transport and assist assembly. Self-propelled colloids, that consume energy to move, hold similar potential for the man-made assembly of microparticles. Yet, experiments showing their use as a powerhouse in materials science lack. Our work explores the design of man-made materials controlled by fluctuations, arising from the internal forces generated by active colloids. Here we show a massive acceleration of the annealing of a monolayer of passive beads by moderate addition of self-propelled micropar…
A silica colloidal crystal obtained by centrifugation at 9 G for 2 days in water was annealed by additional stronger centrifugation at 50 G for 5 days. The number of the striations observed in the colloidal crystal under crossed polarized light decreased at some parts in a growth container after additional centrifugation, while the number alse increase at the other parts. The decrease probably shows the shrinkage of the stacking disorders under high gravity, while the increase probably shows the production of new stacking disorder.
We report the equilibrium self-assembly of binary crystals of oppositely-charged colloidal microspheres at high density. By varying the magnitude of the charge on near equal-sized spheres we show that the structure of the binary crystal may be switched between face-centered cubic, cesium chloride and sodium chloride. We interpret these transformations in terms of a competition between entropic and Coulombic forces.
Colloidal particles are considered ideal building blocks to produce materials with enhanced physical properties. The state-of-the-art techniques for synthesizing these particles provide control over shape, size, and directionality of the interactions. In spite of these advances, there is still a huge gap between the synthesis of individual components and the management of their spontaneous organization towards the desired structures. The main challenge is the control over the dynamics of self-organization. In their kinetic route towards thermodynamically stable structures, colloidal particles …
We study the phase behaviour and the collective dynamics of interacting paramagnetic colloids assembled above a honeycomb lattice of triangular shaped magnetic minima. A frustrated colloidal molecular crystal is realized when filling these potential minima with exactly two particles per pinning site. External in-plane rotating fields are used to anneal the system into different phases, including long range ordered stripes, random fully packed loops, labyrinth and disordered states. At higher amplitude of the annealing field, the dimer lattice displays a two step melting transition where the in…
Structural rearrangement of polystyrene colloidal crystals under dry sintering conditions has been revealed by in situ grazing incidence X-ray scattering. Measured diffraction patterns were analysed using distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) theory and the structural parameters of as-grown colloidal crystals of three different particle sizes were determined for in-plane and out-of-plane directions in a film. By analysing the temperature evolution of diffraction peak positions, integrated intensities, and widths the detailed scenario of structural rearrangement of crystalline domains at a n…
Using large scale numerical simulations, we examine the ordering of colloidal particles on square periodic two-dimensional muffin-tin substrates consisting of a flat surface with localized pinning sites. We show that when there are four particles per pinning site, the particles adopt a hexagonal ordering, while for five particles per pinning site, a square ordering appears. For fillings between four and five particles per pinning site, we identify a rich variety of distinct ordering regimes, including disordered grain boundaries, crystalline stripe structures, superlattice orderings, and disor…
In situ X-ray scattering reveals coarsening rates of superlattices self-assembled from electrostatically stabilized metal nanocrystals depend non-monotonically on driving force
We examine colloidal particles driven over a periodic muffin tin substrate using numerical simulations. In the absence of a driving force this system exhibits a rich variety of commensurate and incommensurate static phases in which topological defects can form domain walls, ordered stripes, superlattices, and disordered patchy regimes as a function of the filling fraction. When an external drive is applied, these different static phases generate distinct dynamical responses. At incommensurate fillings the flow generally occurs in the form of localized pulses or solitons correlated with the mot…
We study the uniaxial compressive behavior of disordered colloidal free-standing micropillars composed of a bidisperse mixture of 3 and 6 um polystyrene particles. Mechanical annealing of confined pillars enables variation of the packing fraction across the phase space of colloidal glasses. The measured normalized strengths and elastic moduli of the annealed freestanding micropillars span almost three orders-of-magnitude despite similar plastic morphology governed by shear banding. We measure a robust correlation between ultimate strengths and elastic constants that is invariant to relative hu…
Two-dimensional mixtures of dipolar colloidal particles with different dipole moments exhibit extremely rich self-assembly behaviour and are relevant to a wide range of experimental systems, including charged and super-paramagnetic colloids at liquid interfaces. However, there is a gap in our understanding of the crystallization of these systems because existing theories such as integral equation theory and lattice sum methods can only be used to study the high temperature fluid phase and the zero-temperature crystal phase, respectively. In this paper we bridge this gap by developing a density…
We consider a model of colloidal spherical particles carrying a permanent dipole moment which is laterally shifted out of the particles' geometrical centres, i.e. the dipole vector is oriented perpendicular to the radius vector of the particles. Varying the shift $δ$ from the centre, we analyze ground state structures for two, three and four hard spheres, using a simulated annealing procedure. We also compare to earlier ground state results. We then consider a bulk system at finite temperatures and different densities. Using Molecular Dynamics simulations, we examine the equilibrium self-assem…
