A complete description of traces on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ of functions from the weighted Sobolev space $W^{l}_{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n+1},γ)$, $l \in \mathbb{N}$, with weight $γ\in A^{\rm loc}_{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n+1})$ is obtained. In the case $l=1$ the proof of the trace theorems is based on a~special nonlinear algorithm for constructing a~system of tilings of the space~$\mathbb R^n$. As the trace of the space $W^1_1(\mathbb R^{n+1},γ)$ we have the new function space $Z(\{γ_{k,m}\})$.
We generalize the classical Muckenhoupt inequality with two measures to three under appropriate conditions. As a consequence, we prove a simple characterization of the undedness of the multiplication operator and thus of the boundedness of the zeros and the asymptotic behavior of the Sobolev orthogonal polynomials, for a large class of measures which includes the most usual examples in the literature.
We study in this article the Improved Sobolev inequalities with Muckenhoupt weights within the framework of stratified Lie groups. This family of inequalities estimate the Lq norm of a function by the geometric mean of two norms corresponding to Sobolev spaces W(s;p) and Besov spaces B(-b, infty, infty). When the value p which characterizes Sobolev space is strictly larger than 1, the required result is well known in R^n and is classically obtained by a Littlewood-Paley dyadic blocks manipulation. For these inequalities we will develop here another totally different technique. When p = 1, thes…
For function spaces equipped with Muckenhoupt weights, the validity of continuous Sobolev embeddings in case $p_0\leq p_1$ is characterized. Extensions to Jawerth-Franke embeddings, vector-valued spaces and examples involving some prominent weights are also provided.
In this paper we present a new characterization of the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}$, $1<p<\infty$ which is a higher dimensional version of a result of Waterman. We also provide a new and simplified proof of a recent result of Alabern, Mateu and Verdera. Finally, we generalize the results to the case of weighted Sobolev spaces with respect to a Muckenhoupt weight.
The study of Sobolev inequalities can be divided in two cases: p = 1 and 1 < p < +$\infty$. In the case p = 1 we study here a relaxed version of refined Sobolev inequalities. When p > 1, using as base space classical Lorentz spaces associated to a weight from the Arino-Muckenhoupt class Bp, we will study Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities. As a by-product we will also consider Morrey-Sobolev inequalities. These arguments can be generalized to many different frameworks, in particular the proofs are given in the setting of stratified Lie groups.
We generalize in this article the classical Sobolev's and Sobolev's trace inequalities on the Grand Lebesgue Spaces under monomial weight instead the classical Lebesgue or grand Lebesgue Spaces. We will distinguish the classical Sobolev's inequality and the so-called trace Sobolev's inequality.
We prove a logarithmic Sobolev trace inequality in a gaussian space and we study the trace operator in the weighted Sobolev space W^{1,p}(Ω,γ) for sufficiently regular domain. We exhibit examples to show the sharpness of the results. Applications to PDE are also considered.
In this article, motivated by a work of Caffarelli and Cordoba in phase transitions analysis, we prove new weighted anisotropic Sobolev type inequalities, that is Sobolev type inequalities where different derivatives have different weight functions. The inequalities we are dealing with, are also intimately connected to weighted Sobolev inequalities for Grushin type operators, the weights being not necessarily Muckenhoupt. For example we consider here Sobolev inequalities on finite cylinders, the weights being different powers of the distance function from the top and the bottom of the cylinder…
We introduce and study fractional variable exponents Sobolev trace spaces on any open set in the Euclidean space equipped with the Lebesgue measure. We show that every equivalence class of Sobolev functions has a quasicontinuous representatives. We use the relative capacity to characterize completely the zero trace fractional variable exponents Sobolev spaces. We also give a relative capacity criterium for removable sets.
We prove a trace Hardy type inequality with the best constant on the polyhedral convex cones which generalizes recent results of Alvino et al. and of Tzirakis on the upper half space. We also prove some trace Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya type inequalities which generalize the recent results of Filippas et al.. In applications, we derive some Hardy type inequalities and Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya type inequalities for fractional Laplacian. Finally, we prove the logarithmic Sobolev trace inequalities and logarithmic Hardy trace inequalities on the upper half spaces. The best constants in these inequalities ar…
We give a news characterization of variable exponent Sobolev trace spaces. We construct The Perron-Weiner-Brelot operator in nonlinear harmonic space and we give sufficient condition for which this operator is injective.
There are known trace and extension theorems relating functions in a weighted Sobolev space in a domain U to functions in a Besov space on the boundary bU. We extend these theorems to the case where the Sobolev exponent p is less than one by modifying our Sobolev spaces to consider averages of functions in Whitney balls. Averaged Sobolev spaces are also of interest in the applications in the case where p>1, and so we also provide trace and extension results in that case. Finally, we provide some comparable results for Neumann traces and extensions.
In this paper, we study the traces and the extensions for weighted Sobolev spaces on upper half spaces when the weights reach to the borderline cases. We first give a full characterization of the existence of trace spaces for these weighted Sobolev spaces, and then study the trace parts and the extension parts between the weighted Sobolev spaces and a new kind of Besov-type spaces (on hyperplanes) which are defined by using integral averages over selected layers of dyadic cubes.
By a stronger compact boundary embedding theorem in Musielak-Orlicz-Sobolev space developed in the paper, variational method is employed to deal with the nonlinear elliptic equation with the nonlinear Neumann boundary condition in the framework of Musielak-Orlicz-Sobolev space.
In this paper, we study the existence of traces for Sobolev spaces on the hyperbolic filling $X$ of a compact metric space $Z$ equipped with a doubling measure. Given a suitable metric on $X$, we can regard $Z$ as the boundary of $X$. After equipping $X$ with a weighted measure $μ$ via the measure on $Z$ and the Euclidean arc length, we give characterizations for the existence of traces for first-order Sobolev spaces.
In the present paper we study embedding operators for weighted Sobolev spaces whose weights satisfy the well-known Muckenhoupt A_p-condition. Sufficient conditions for boundedness and compactness of the embedding operators are obtained for smooth domains and domains with boundary singularities. The proposed method is based on the concept of 'generalized' quasiconformal homeomorphisms (homeomorphisms with bounded mean distortion.) The choice of the homeomorphism type depends on the choice of the corresponding weighted Sobolev space. Such classes of homeomorphisms induce bounded composition oper…
We survey a few trace theorems for Sobolev spaces on $N$-dimensional Euclidean domains. We include known results on linear subspaces, in particular hyperspaces, and smooth boundaries, as well as less known results for Lipschitz boundaries, including Besov's Theorem and other characterizations of traces on planar domains, polygons in particular, in the spirit of the work of P. Grisvard. Finally, we present a recent approach, originally developed by G. Auchmuty in the case of the Sobolev space $H^1(Ω)$ on a Lipschitz domain $Ω$, and which we have further developed for the trace spaces of $H^k(Ω)…
We investigate the properties of a class of weighted vector-valued $L_p$-spaces and the corresponding (an)isotropic Sobolev-Slobodetskii spaces. These spaces arise naturally in the context of maximal $L_p$-regularity for parabolic initial-boundary value problems. Our main tools are operators with a bounded $\calH^\infty$-calculus, interpolation theory, and operator sums.
Given $p \in (1,\infty)$, let $(\operatorname{X},\operatorname{d},μ)$ be a metric measure space with uniformly locally doubling measure $μ$ supporting a weak local $(1,p)$-Poincaré inequality. For each $θ\in [0,p)$, we characterize the trace space of the Sobolev $W^{1}_{p}(\operatorname{X})$-space to lower codimension-$θ$ content regular closed subsets $S \subset \operatorname{X}$. In particular, if the space $(\operatorname{X},\operatorname{d},μ)$ is Ahlfors $Q$-regular for some $Q \geq 1$ and $p \in (Q,\infty)$, then we get an intrinsic description of the trace-space of the Sobolev $W^{1}_{p…
We construct whole-space extensions of functions in a fractional Sobolev space of order $s\in (0,1)$ and integrability $p\in (0,\infty)$ on an open set $O$ which vanish in a suitable sense on a portion $D$ of the boundary $\partial O$ of $O$. The set $O$ is supposed to satisfy the so-called interior thickness condition in $\partial O \setminus D$, which is much weaker than the global interior thickness condition. The proof works by means of a reduction to the case $D=\emptyset$ using a geometric construction.
In this article we generalize the classical Sobolev's and Sobolev's trace inequalities on the Grand Lebesgue Spaces instead the classical Lebesgue Spaces. We will distinguish the classical Sobolev's inequality and the so-called trace Sobolev's inequality. We consider for simplicity only the case of whole space.
Let $S \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$ be an arbitrary nonempty compact set such that the $d$-Hausdorff content $\mathcal{H}^{d}_{\infty}(S) > 0$ for some $d \in (0,n]$. For each $p \in (\max\{1,n-d\},n]$, an almost sharp intrinsic description of the trace space $W_{p}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})|_{S}$ of the Sobolev space $W_{p}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ to the set $S$ is obtained. Furthermore, for each $p \in (\max\{1,n-d\},n]$ and $\varepsilon \in (0, \min\{p-(n-d),p-1\})$, new bounded linear extension operators from the trace space $W_{p}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})|_{S}$ into the space $W_{p-\varepsilon}^{1}(\mathbb{…
We characterize one-sided weighted Sobolev spaces $W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R},ω)$, where $ω$ is a one-sided Sawyer weight, in terms of a.e.~and weighted $L^p$ limits as $α\to1^-$ of Marchaud fractional derivatives of order $α$. Similar results for weighted Sobolev spaces $W^{2,p}(\mathbb{R}^n,ν)$, where $ν$ is an $A_p$-Muckenhoupt weight, are proved in terms of limits as $s\to1^-$ of fractional Laplacians $(-Δ)^s$. These are Bourgain--Brezis--Mironescu-type characterizations for weighted Sobolev spaces. We also complement their work by studying a.e.~and weighted $L^p$ limits as $α,s\to0^+$.
We study necessary and sufficient conditions for a Muckenhoupt weight $w \in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb R^d)$ that yield almost sure existence of radial, and vertical, limits at infinity for Sobolev functions $u \in W^{1,p}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb R^d,w)$ with a $p$-integrable gradient $|\nabla u|\in L^p(\mathbb R^d,w)$. The question is shown to subtly depend on the sense in which the limit is taken. First, we fully characterize the existence of radial limits. Second, we give essentially sharp sufficient conditions for the existence of vertical limits. In the specific setting of product and rad…
We find a new sharp trace Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequality on convex cones, aswell as a weighted sharp trace Sobolev inequality on epigraphs of convex functions. This is done by using a generalized Borell-Brascamp-Lieb inequality, coming from the Brunn-Minkowski theory.
Let $\mathbb B_n$ be the open unit ball in $\mathbb C^n$. We characterize the spectra of pointwise multipliers $M_u$ acting on Banach spaces of analytic functions on $\mathbb B_n$ satisfying some general conditions. These spaces include Bergman-Sobolev spaces $A^p_{α,β}$, Bloch-type spaces $\mathcal B_α$, weighted Hardy spaces $H^p_w$ with Muckenhoupt weights and Hardy-Sobolev Hilbert spaces $H^2_β$. Moreover, we describe the essential spectra of multipliers in most of the aforementioned spaces, in particular, in those spaces for which the set of multipliers is a subset of the ball algebra.
For each $p>n$ we use local oscillations to give intrinsic characterizations of the trace of the Sobolev space $W^1_p(Ω)$ to the boundary of an arbitrary domain $Ω\subset R^n$.
In this article we investigate the spatial Sobolev regularity of mild solutions to stochastic Burgers equations with additive trace class noise. Our findings are based on a combination of suitable bootstrap-type arguments and a detailed analysis of the nonlinearity in the equation.
A form of Sobolev inequalities for the symmetric gradient of vector-valued functions is proposed, which allows for arbitrary ground domains in $\mathbb R ^n$. In the relevant inequalities, boundary regularity of domains is replaced with information on boundary traces of trial functions. The inequalities so obtained exhibit the same exponents as in classical inequalities for the full gradient of Sobolev functions, in regular domains. Furthermore, they involve constants independent of the geometry of the domain, and hence yield novel results yet for smooth domains. Our approach relies upon a poi…
We study the boundary traces of Newton-Sobolev, Hajlasz-Sobolev, and BV (bounded variation) functions. Assuming less regularity of the domain than is usually done in the literature, we show that all of these function classes achieve the same "boundary values", which in particular implies that the trace spaces coincide provided that they exist. Many of our results seem to be new even in Euclidean spaces but we work in a more general complete metric space equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a Poincare inequality.
In this paper we construct a trace operator for homogeneous Sobolev spaces defined on infinite strip-like domains. We identify an intrinsic seminorm on the resulting trace space that makes the trace operator bounded and allows us to construct a bounded right inverse. The intrinsic seminorm involves two features not encountered in the trace theory of bounded Lipschitz domains or half-spaces. First, due to the strip-like structure of the domain, the boundary splits into two infinite disconnected components. The traces onto each component are not completely independent, and the intrinsic seminorm…
We prove boundary inequalities in arbitrary bounded Lipschitz domains on the trace space of Sobolev spaces. For that, we make use of the trace operator, its Moore-Penrose inverse, and of a special inner product. We show that our trace inequalities are particularly useful to prove harmonic inequalities, which serve as powerful tools to characterize the harmonic functions on Sobolev spaces of non-integer order.
We give a quantitative characterization of traces on the boundary of Sobolev maps in $\dot{W}^{1,p}(\mathcal M, \mathcal N)$, where $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{N}$ are compact Riemannian manifolds, $\partial \mathcal{M} \neq \emptyset$: the Borel-measurable maps $u\colon \partial \mathcal M \to \mathcal{N}$ that are the trace of a map $U\in \dot{W}^{1,p}(\mathcal M, \mathcal{N})$ are characterized as the maps for which there exists an extension energy density $w \colon \partial \mathcal{M} \to [0,\infty]$ that controls the Sobolev energy of extensions from $\lfloor p - 1 \rfloor$-dimensional s…
We establish trace theorems for function spaces defined on general Ahlfors regular metric spaces $Z$. The results cover the Triebel-Lizorkin spaces and the Besov spaces for smoothness indices $s<1,$ as well as the first order Hajłasz-Sobolev space $M^{1,p}(Z)$. They generalize the classical results from the Euclidean setting, since the traces of these function spaces onto any closed Ahlfors regular subset $F \subset Z$ are Besov spaces defined intrinsically on $F$. Our method employs the definitions of the function spaces via hyperbolic fillings of the underlying metric space.
Trace classes of Sobolev-type functions in metric spaces are subject of this paper. In particular, functions on domains whose boundary has an upper codimension-$θ$ bound are considered. Based on a Poincaré inequality, existence of a Borel measurable trace is proven whenever the power of integrability of the "gradient" exceeds $θ$. The trace $T$ is shown to be a compact operator mapping a Sobolev-type space on a domain into a Besov space on the boundary. Sufficient conditions for $T$ to be surjective are found and counterexamples showing that surjectivity may fail are also provided. The case wh…
We deal with Orlicz-Sobolev embeddings in open subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$. A necessary and sufficient condition is established for the existence of an optimal, i.e. largest possible, Orlicz-Sobolev space continuously embedded into a given Orlicz space. Moreover, the optimal Orlicz-Sobolev space is exhibited whenever it exists. Parallel questions are addressed for Orlicz-Sobolev embeddings into Orlicz spaces with respect to a Frostman measure, and, in particular, for trace embeddings on the boundary.
On the Sierpinski gasket $\mathcal{SG}$, we consider Sobolev spaces $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ associated with the standard Laplacian $Δ$ with order $σ\geq 0$. When $σ\in\mathbb{Z}^+$, $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ consists of functions equipped with $L^2$ norms of the function itself and its Laplacians up to $σ$ order; when $σ\notin \mathbb{Z}^+$, we fill up the gaps between integer orders by using complex interpolation. Let $L^2_{σ, D}(\mathcal{SG})=(I-Δ_D)^{-σ}L^2(\mathcal{SG})$ where $Δ_D$ is the Dirichlet Laplacian associated with $Δ$. Let $\{p_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ be a collection of countably many points l…
For each $p>2$ we give intrinsic characterizations of the restriction of the homogeneous Sobolev space $L^1_p(R^2)$ to an arbitrary finite subset $E$ of $R^2$. The trace criterion is expressed in terms of certain weighted oscillations of the second order with respect to a measure generated by the Menger curvature of triangles with vertices in $E$.
We characterize the trace of magnetic Sobolev spaces defined in a half-space or in a smooth bounded domain in which the magnetic field $A$ is differentiable and its exterior derivative corresponding to the magnetic field $dA$ is bounded. In particular, we prove that, for $d \ge 1$ and $p>1$, the trace of the magnetic Sobolev space $W^{1, p}_A(\mathbb{R}^{d+1}_+)$ is exactly $W^{1-1/p, p}_{A^{\shortparallel}}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ where $A^{\shortparallel}(x) =( A_1, \dotsc, A_d)(x, 0)$ for $x \in \mathbb{R}^d$ with the convention $A = (A_1, \dotsc, A_{d+1})$ when $A \in C^1(\overline{\mathbb{R}^{d+1}…
We construct explicit examples of Frostman-type measures concentrated on arbitrary planar rectifiable curves of positive length. Based on such constructions we obtain for each $p \in (1,\infty)$ an exact description of the trace space of the first-order Sobolev space $W^{1}_{p}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$ to an arbitrary planar rectifiable curve $Γ\subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$ of positive length.
In this paper we present a method for determining whether there exists a largest Orlicz space $L^A(Ω)$ satisfying the Sobolev embedding $W^mL^A(Ω) \to Y(Ω)$ where $Y(Ω)$ stands for an arbitrary so-called Marcinkiewicz endpoint space. The tool developed in this work enables us to investigate the optimality of Orlicz domain spaces in Sobolev embeddings and also in Sobolev trace embeddings on domains $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with various regularity.
Let $Λ\subset R$ be a strictly increasing sequence. For $r = 1,2$, we give a simple explicit expression for an equivalent norm on the trace spaces $W_p^r(R)|_Λ$, $L_p^r(R)|_Λ$ of the non-homogeneous and homogeneous Sobolev spaces with $r$ derivatives $W_p^r(R)$, $L_p^r(R)$. We also construct an interpolating spline of low degree having optimal norm up to a constant factor. A general result relating interpolation in $L^r_p(R)$ and $W^r_p(R)$ for all $r \geq 1$ is also given.
