We study the dynamics of the Rabi Hamiltonian in the medium coupling regime with $\left\vert g/ω\right\vert \sim 0.07$, where $g$ is atom-field coupling constant, $ω$ is the field frequency, for the quantum state with average photon number $\bar{n}\sim 10^{4}$. We map the original Hamiltonian to an effective one, which describes a tight-binding chain subjected to a staggered linear potential. It is shown that the photon probability distribution of a Gaussian-type state exhibits the amplitude modulated Bloch oscillation (BO), which is a superposition of two conventional BOs with a half-BO-period delay between them and is essentially another type of Bloch-Zener oscillation. The probability transition between the two BOs can be controlled and suppressed by the ratio $g\sqrt{\bar{n}}% /ω$, as well as in-phase resonant oscillating atomic frequency $Ω\left( t\right) $, leading to multiple zero-transition points.
We study the coherent dynamics of an excited two-level atom in a vacuum optomechanical cavity and find that the original atom-cavity Rabi oscillation is sinusoidally modulated by the light-mechanics coupling as the Rabi splitting is on resonance with the mechanical mode. We develop an analytic model in a three-dimensional Hilbert subspace to explain this phenomenon and employ numerical simulations of the density-matrix master equation to confirm our analysis. We also show that the modulated Rabi oscillation survives in presence of dissipations and other non-ideal factors.
We investigate the routing of a single-photon in a modulated cavity optomechanical system, in which the cavity is driven by a strong coupling field, and the mechanical resonator (MR) is modulated with a weak coherent field. We show that, when there is no a weak coherent field modulating the MR, the system cannot act as a single-photon router, since the signal will be completely covered by the quantum and thermal noises. By introducing the weak coherent field, we can achieve the routing of the single-photon by adjusting the frequency of the weak coherent field, and the system can be immune to t…
We study the coherent dynamics of a qubit excited by an amplitude-modulated electromagnetic field under the Rabi resonance when the frequency of the low-frequency modulation field matches the Rabi frequency in the high-frequency field. Due to destructive interference of multiple photon processes at the ultrastrong coupling between the qubit and the low-frequency driving field, Rabi oscillations result exclusively from the Bloch-Siegert effect. It is directly observed in the time-resolved coherent dynamics as the Bloch-Siegert oscillation. In this case, triplets in Fourier spectra of the cohere…
We studied the interaction of a two-level atom with a frequency modulated cavity mode in an ideal optical cavity. The system, described by a Jaynes-Cumming Hamiltonian, gave rise to a set of stiff nonlinear first order equations solved numerically using implicit and semi-implicit numerical algorithms. We explored the evolution of the atomic system using nonlinear dynamics tools, like time series, phase plane, power spectral density, and Poincaré sections plots, for monochromatic and bichromatic modulations of the cavity field. The system showed quasiperiodic and possibly chaotic behavior when …
We have generated a new type of biphoton state by cavity-enhanced down-conversion in a type-II phase-matched, periodically-poled KTiOPO_4 (PPKTP) crystal. By introducing a weak intracavity birefringence, the polarization-entangled output was modulated between the singlet and triplet states according to the arrival-time difference of the signal and idler photons. This cavity-enhanced biphoton source is spectrally bright, yielding a single-mode fiber-coupled coincidence rate of 0.7 pairs/s per mW of pump power per MHz of down-conversion bandwidth. Its novel biphoton behavior may be utilized in s…
We explore the Bloch-Messiah decomposition of Gaussian unitary to analyze the Entangling Cloner Attack performed by an eavesdropper on a discrete modulated continuous variable QKD scenario. Such a decomposition allows to replace the nonlinear unitary resulting from eavesdropping and tracing out Bob's mode into an architecture of single-mode operations (squeezers, phase shifters and displacements) and a two-mode beam splitter. Based on such architecture we were able to get tighter upper bounds to the eavesdropper entropy for a discrete modulated CVQKD scheme. The new bounds are justified from t…
Cold atoms in an optical lattice execute Bloch-Zener oscillations when they are accelerated. We have performed a theoretical investigation into the case when the optical lattice is the intra-cavity field of a driven Fabry-Perot resonator. When the atoms oscillate inside the resonator, we find that their back-action modulates the phase and intensity of the light transmitted through the cavity. We solve the coupled atom-light equations self-consistently and show that, remarkably, the Bloch period is unaffected by this back-action. The transmitted light provides a way to observe the oscillation c…
A simple algebraic procedure is described for deriving Maxwell-Bloch-type equations from single-atom cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) master equations via orthogonal projection onto a manifold of semiclassical states. In particular the usual Maxwell-Bloch Equations are obtained--up to a state-dependent correction factor of order unity--straightforwardly from the unconditional Jaynes-Cummings master equation. The technique of projecting onto a semiclassical manifold can also be applied with conditional master equations (quantum filters), leading to stochastic simulation models that i…
We analyze the optomechanics of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with the optical lattice inside a laser-pumped optical cavity and subject to a uniform bias force such as gravity. An atomic wave packet in a tilted lattice undergoes Bloch oscillations; in a cavity the backaction of the atoms on the light leads to a time-dependent modulation of the intracavity lattice at the Bloch frequency. When the Bloch frequency is on the order of the cavity damping rate we find transport of the atoms either up or down the lattice. The transport dynamics can be interpreted as a manifestation of…
We theoretically study the radiation-induced interaction between the mechanical motion of an oscillating mirror and a remotely trapped atomic cloud. When illuminated by continuous-wave radiation, the mirror motion will induce red and blue sideband radiation, which respectively increases and reduces motional excitation. We find that by suitably driving $Λ$-level atoms, the mirror correlation with a specific radiation sideband could be converted from the outgoing to the incoming radiation. Such process allows us to manipulate the heating and cooling effects. Particularly, we develop an optomecha…
We present and investigate an analogue model for a controllable photon geberation via the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) in a cavity containing a degenerate optical amplifier (OPA) which is pumed by an amplitude-modulated field. The time modulation of the pump field in the model OPA system is equivalent to a periodic modulation of the cavity length, which is responsible for the generation of the Casimir radiation. By taking into account the rapidly oscillating terms of the modulation frequency, the effects of the corresponding counter-rotating terms (CRTs) on the analogue Casimir radiation eme…
We propose an effective approach for generating highly pure and strong cavity-mechanical entanglement (or optical-microwave entanglement) in a hybrid modulated three-mode optomechanical system. By applying two-tone driving to the cavity and modulating the coupling strength between two mechanical oscillators (or between a mechanical oscillator and a transmission line resonator), we obtain an effective Hamiltonian where an intermediate mechanical mode acting as an engineered reservoir cools the Bogoliubov modes of two target system modes via beam-splitter-like interactions. In this way, the two …
We investigate the influence of periodically time-modulated cavity frequency on the generation of atomic squeezed states for a collection of N two-level atoms confined in a non-stationary cavity with a moving mirror. We show that the two-photon character of the field generated from the vacuum state of field plays a significant role in producing the atomic or spin squeezed states. We further show that the maximum amount of persistent atomic squeezing is obtained for the initial cavity field prepared in the vacuum state.
We study theoretically the superfluidity and stability of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) whose interatomic scattering length is periodically modulated with optical Feshbach resonance. Our numerical study finds that the properties of this periodic BEC are strongly influenced by the modulation strength. When the modulation strength is small, only the Bloch waves close to the Brillouin zone edge suffer both Landau and dynamical instabilities. When the modulation strength is strong enough, all Bloch waves become dynamically unstable. In other words, the periodic BEC loses its superfluidity compl…
The generated magnitude of quadrature squeezing in a cavity-coupled ensemble, which is continuously driven using a coherent off-axis field, is theoretically explored. Using a truncated set of equations-of-motion derived from a Dicke Hamiltonian, steady-state quadrature squeezing of the cavity field is numerically calculated to approach a limit of -3 dB, while frequency-modulated quadrature squeezing approaches a limit of -14 dB, in the absence of pure-dephasing, and as a function of the ensemble's size and detuning. The impact of pure-dephasing on steady-state quadrature squeezing is shown to …
We investigate the dynamics of a two-photon laser under conditions where the spatial variation of the cavity field along the cavity axis is important. Main attention is paid to linear stability analysis and numerical investigation of a two-photon laser for the Maxwell-Bloch equations. The model assumes pumping to the upper state of the two-photon transition. We consider the Maxwell-Bloch equations on the basis of which we study the stability analysis of the steady state of the system. The system is taken to be contained in a ring-laser cavity. Asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalue and analyti…
We show that the counter-rotating terms of the dispersive qubit-cavity Rabi model can produce relatively large and nonmonotonic Bloch-Siegert shifts in the cavity frequency as the system is driven through a quantum-to-classical transition. Using a weak microwave probe tone, we demonstrate experimentally this effect by monitoring the resonance frequency of a microwave cavity coupled to a transmon and driven by a microwave field with varying power. In the weakly driven regime (quantum phase), the Bloch-Siegert shift appears as a small constant frequency shift, while for strong drive (classical p…
We study a hybrid semiconductor-optomechanical system, which consists of a cavity with an oscillating mirror made by semiconducting materials or with a semiconducting membrane inside. The cavity photons and the excitons in the oscillating mirror or semiconducting membrane form into polaritons. And correspondingly, the optomechanical interaction between the cavity photons and the mirror or membrane is changed into the polariton-mechanical interaction. We theoretically study the eigenenergies and eigenfunctions of this tripartite hybrid system with the generalized rotating-wave approximation. We…
It is well-known that the nonlinear coupling between a mechanical oscillator and a superconducting oscillator or optical cavity can be used to generate a Kerr-nonlinearity for the cavity mode. We show that the strength of this Kerr-nonlinearity, as well as the effect of the photon-pressure force can be enormously increased by modulating the strength of the nonlinear coupling. We present an electromechanical circuit in which this enhancement can be readily realized.
We present the model of one-dimensional chain of two-level artificial atoms driven with dc field and quantum light simultaneously in strong coupling regime. The interaction of atoms with light leads to entanglement of electron and photon states (dressing of the atoms). The driving via dc field leads to the Bloch oscillations (BO) in the chain of dressed atoms. We considered the mutual influence of dressing and BO and show that scenario of oscillations dramatically differs from predicted by the Jaynes-Cummings and Bloch-Zener models. We study the evolution of the population inversion, tunneling…
We study entanglement of the motional degrees of freedom of two tethered and optically trapped microdisks inside a single cavity. By properly choosing the position of the trapped objects in the optical cavity and driving proper modes of the cavity it is possible to equip the system with linear and quadratic optomechanical couplings. We show that a parametric coupling between the fundamental vibrational modes of two tethered mircodiscs can be generated via a time modulated input laser. For a proper choice of the modulation frequency, this mechanism can drive the motion of the microdisks into an…
In a previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 047202 (2019)] a translationally invariant framework called quantum-electrodynamical Bloch (QED-Bloch) theory was introduced for the description of periodic materials in homogeneous magnetic fields and strongly coupled to the quantized photon field in the optical limit. For such systems, we show that QED-Bloch theory predicts the existence of fractal polaritonic spectra as a function of the cavity coupling strength. In addition, for the energy spectrum as a function of the relative magnetic flux we find that a terahertz cavity can modify the standard H…
The entanglement of atomic system consists of two atoms interacts with a deformed cavity mode is quantified by the means of Bloch vectors and the cross dyadic of the travelling state inside the cavity. For large value of the deformation the amplitude of Bloch vectors decrease very fast and consequently the traveling state turns into mixed state quickly. The generated entangled state is used as quantum channel to implement quantum teleportation protocol. It is shown that both of the deformed parameter and the number of photons inside the cavity play a central role on controlling the fidelity of…
We extend our theory of Bloch oscillations of cold atoms inside an optical cavity [ Venkatesh et al. Phys. Rev. A 80 063834 (2009)] to include the effects of quantum noise arising from coupling to external modes. The noise acts as a form of quantum measurement backaction by perturbing the coupled dynamics of the atoms and the light. We take it into account by solving the Heisenberg-Langevin equations for linearized fluctuations about the atomic and optical mean fields and examine how this influences the signal-to-noise ratio of a measurement of external forces using this system. In particular,…
We show two examples in which the dynamical Casimir effect can be achieved by modulating the Kerr or higher order nonlinearities. In the first case the cavity field is coupled to an arbitrary number of qubits or an harmonic oscillator via the dipole interaction. In the second case, the modulation of the nonlinearities is accompanied by the off-resonance modulation of the cavity frequency. We present the analytic description of the phenomenon and supplement it with numeric simulations, demonstrating that photons can be created from vacuum and the resulting hyper-Poissonian photon statistics is …
Quantum superposition in mechanical systems is not only key evidence for macroscopic quantum coherence, but can also be utilized in modern quantum technology. Here we propose an efficient approach for creating macroscopically distinct mechanical superposition states in a two-mode optomechanical system. Photon hopping between the two cavity modes is modulated sinusoidally. The modulated photon tunneling enables an ultrastrong radiation-pressure force acting on the mechanical resonator, and hence significantly increases the mechanical displacement induced by a single photon. We study systematica…
Condensed matter physics and quantum electrodynamics (QED) have been long considered as distinct disciplines. This situation is changing by the progress in cavity QED materials. Motivated by these advances we aim to bridge these fields by merging fundamental concepts coming from both sides. In the first part of the thesis we present how non-relativistic QED can be constructed and we discuss the light-matter interaction in different gauges and that neglecting particular quadratic terms can lead to instabilities. In the second part, we revisit the Sommerfeld model of the free electron gas in cav…
We investigate the dynamics of an optomechanical system where a cavity with a movable mirror involves a degenerate optical parametric amplifier and is driven by a periodically modulated laser field. Our results show that the cooperation between the parametric driving and periodically modulated cavity driving results in a two-fold squeezing on the movable cavity mirror that acts as a mechanical oscillator. This allows the fluctuation of the mechanical oscillator in one quadrature (momentum or position) to be reduced to a level that cannot be reached by solely applying either of these two drivin…
A growing number of experimental set-ups in cavity optomechanics exploit periodically driven fields. However, such set-ups are not amenable to analysis using simple, yet powerful, closed-form expressions of linearized optomechanics, which have provided so much of our present understanding of experimental optomechanics. In the present paper, we formulate a new method to calculate quantum noise spectra in modulated optomechanical systems, which we analyze, compare, and discuss with two other recently proposed solutions: we term these (i) frequency-shifted operators (ii) Floquet and (iii) iterati…
Cavity optomechanics has proven to be a field of research rich with possibilities for studying motional cooling, squeezing, quantum entanglement and metrology in solid state systems. While to date most studies have focused on the modulation of the cavity frequency by the moving element, the emergence of new materials will soon allow to explore the influences of nonlinear optical effects. We therefore study in this work the effects due to a nonlinear position-modulated self-Kerr interaction and find that this leads to an effective coupling that scales with the square of the photon number, meani…
We study in detail the dynamics of a non-stationary system composed of a Quantum Well confined in an optomechanical cavity. This system is investigated with classical and quantized motion of the cavity movable mirror. In both the cases, the cavity frequency is rapidly modulated in time. The resultant periodically modulated spectra is presented. In particular, we study the effect of two-photon process on the number of intracavity photons. The intensity of fluorescent light emitted by excitons in the quantum well is also examined for these non-stationary systems. It is observed that the initial …
We study the radiation emitted by a cavity moving in vacuum. We give a quantitative estimate of the photon production inside the cavity as well as of the photon flux radiated from the cavity. A resonance enhancement occurs not only when the cavity length is modulated but also for a global oscillation of the cavity. For a high finesse cavity the emitted radiation surpasses radiation from a single mirror by orders of magnitude.
The nonlinear quantum regime is crucial for implementing interesting quantum effects, which have wide applications in modern quantum science. Here we propose an effective method to reach the nonlinear quantum regime in a modulated optomechanical system (OMS), which is originally in the weak-coupling regime. The mechanical spring constant and optomechanical interaction are modulated periodically. This leads to the result that the resonant optomechanical interaction can be effectively enhanced into the single-photon strong-coupling regime by the modulation-induced mechanical parametric amplifica…
Optomechanical coupling between the motion of a mechanical oscillator and a cavity represents a new arena for experimental investigation of quantum effects on the mesoscopic and macroscopic scale. The motional sidebands of the output of a cavity offer ultra-sensitive probes of the dynamics. We introduce a scheme whereby these sidebands split asymmetrically and show how they may be used as experimental diagnostics and signatures of quantum noise limited dynamics. We show split-sidebands with controllable asymmetry occur by simultaneously modulating the light-mechanical coupling $g$ and $ω_M$ - s…
In this paper, we show that the time evolution of the Bloch vector governed by the thermal Jaynes-Cummings model is equivalent to a compressible inviscid flow with zero vorticity. Because of its quasiperiodicity, the dynamics of the Bloch vector includes countably infinite angular momenta as integrals of motion. Moreover, to derive the Bloch vector, we trace out the Hilbert space of the cavity field and remove entanglement between the single atom and the cavity mode. These facts indicate that the dynamics of the Bloch vector can be described with a hidden-variable model that has local determin…
There is growing experimental interest in coupling cavity photons to the cyclotron resonance excitations of electron liquids in high-mobility semiconductor quantum wells or graphene sheets. These media offer unique platforms to carry out fundamental studies of exciton-polariton condensation and cavity quantum electrodynamics in a regime in which electron-electron interactions are expected to play a pivotal role. Focusing on graphene, we present a theoretical study of the impact of electron-electron interactions on a quantum Hall polariton fluid, that is a fluid of magneto-excitons resonantly c…
We propose an approach to enhance the mechanical effects of single photons in a two-mode optomechanical system. This is achieved by introducing a resonance-frequency modulation to the cavity fields. When the modulation frequency and amplitude satisfy certain conditions, the mechanical displacement induced by single photons could be larger than the quantum zero-point fluctuation of the oscillating resonator. This method can be used to create distinct mechanical superposition states.
We study Rabi oscillations of the second-order Raman transition realized on dressed states of a qubit excited by an amplitude-modulated microwave field. The co-rotating component of the ultrastrong low-frequency modulation field excites virtual multiple photon processes between the dressed states and forms the Rabi frequency in the so-called rotating wave approximation (RWA). The counter-rotating modulation component also gives a significant contribution to the Rabi frequency owing to the Bloch--Siegert effect. It is shown that for properly chosen parameters of the modulation field and qubit, …
We propose entangling operations based on the energy curvature couplings of encoded spin qubits to a superconducting cavity, exploring the non-linear qubit response to a gate voltage variation. For a two-qubit ($n$-qubit) entangling gate we explore acquired geometric phases via a time-modulated longitudinal $σ_z$-coupling, offering gate times of 10s of ns even when the qubits and the cavity are far detuned. No dipole moment is necessary: the qubit transverse $σ_x$-coupling to the resonator is zero at the full sweet spot of the encoded spin qubit of interest (a triple quantum dot three-electron…
We study the phenomenon of wave packet revivals of Bloch electrons and explore how to control them by a magnetic field for quantum information transfer. It is showed that the single electron system can be modulated into a linear dispersion regime by the "quantized" flux and then an electronic wave packet with the components localized in this regime can be transferred without spreading. This feature can be utilized to perform the high-fidelity transfer of quantum information encoded in the polarization of the spin. Beyond the linear approximation, the re-localization and self-interference occur…
We predict that an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate strongly coupled to an intracavity optical lattice can undergo resonant tunneling and directed transport when a constant and uniform bias force is applied. The bias force induces Bloch oscillations, causing amplitude and phase modulation of the lattice which resonantly modifies the site-to-site tunneling. For the right choice of parameters a net atomic current is generated. The transport velocity can be oriented oppositely to the bias force, with its amplitude and direction controlled by the detuning between the pump laser and the cavity. The …
We study collective effects in an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble of two-level emitters coupled to an optical cavity with narrow linewidth. Using second order mean field theory we find that the emitters within a few times the cavity linewidth exhibit synchronous behaviour and undergo collective Rabi oscillations. Under proper conditions, the synchronized oscillations give rise to a modulated intracavity field which can excite emitters detuned by many linewidths from the cavity resonance. To study the synchronization in further detail, we simplify the model and consider two ensembles and stu…
A scheme for spatial multimode quantum memory is developed such that spatial-temporal structure of a weak signal pulse can be stored and recalled via cavity-assisted off-resonant Raman interaction with a strong angular-modulated control field in an extended $Λ$-type atomic ensemble. It is shown that effective multimode storage is possible when the Raman coherence spatial grating involves wave vectors with different longitudinal components relative to the paraxial signal field. The possibilities of implementing the scheme in the solid-state materials are discussed.
We study information scrambling, as diagnosed by the out-of-time order correlations (OTOCs), in a system of large spins collectively interacting via spatially inhomogeneous and incommensurate exchange couplings. The model is realisable in a cavity QED system in the dispersive regime. Fast scrambling, signalled by an exponential growth of the OTOCs, is observed when the couplings do not factorise into the product of a pair of local interaction terms, and at the same time the state of the spins points initially coplanar to the equator of the Bloch sphere. When one of these conditions is not real…
We demonstrate the emergence of a time crystal of atoms in a high-finesse optical cavity driven by a phase-modulated transverse pump field, resulting in a shaken lattice. This shaken system exhibits macroscopic oscillations in the number of cavity photons and order parameters at noninteger multiples of the driving period, which signals the appearance of an incommensurate time crystal. The subharmonic oscillatory motion corresponds to dynamical switching between symmetry-broken states, which are nonequilibrium bond ordered density wave states. Employing a semiclassical phase-space representatio…
We investigate optical nonlinear interactions in a dynamic environment by studying generation of photons in spontaneous parametric down conversion inside a nonlinear cavity where the optical path length is periodically modulated in time. We show that the temporal dynamics of the cavity modify the nonlinear interaction and the generated continuous variable time-frequency entangled bi-photon state evolves into a tunable discrete higher dimensional state in the non-adiabatic modulation regime where the modulation time scales are much faster than the photon lifetime. In this regime, the system mim…
We consider quantum signalling between two-level quantum systems in a cavity, in the pertubative regime of the earliest possible arrival times of the signal. We present two main results: First we find that, perhaps surprisingly, the analogue of amplitude modulated signalling (Alice using her energy eigenstates |g>, |e>, as in the Fermi problem) is generally sub-optimal for communication. Namely, e.g., phase modulated signalling (Alice using, e.g., |+>,|e>-states) overcomes the quantum noise already at a lower order in perturbation theory. Second, we study the effect of mode truncations that ar…
We study the dynamics of two ensembles of atoms (or equivalently, atomic clocks) coupled to a bad cavity and pumped incoherently by a Raman laser. Our main result is the nonequilibrium phase diagram for this experimental setup in terms of two parameters - detuning between the clocks and the repump rate. There are three main phases - trivial steady state (Phase I), where all atoms are maximally pumped, nontrivial steady state corresponding to monochromatic superradiance (Phase II), and amplitude-modulated superradiance (Phase III). Phases I and II are fixed points of the mean-field dynamics, wh…
