We show that excitons coupled to cavity photons and phonons admit a generalized Bloch theorem when formulated for the conserved total crystal momentum. In minimal-coupling and Fröhlich representations, the interchange of momenta between fermions and bosons breaks crystalline excitons' translational symmetry. In our symmetry-adapted frame, the Hamiltonian becomes block diagonal, without invoking approximations. The resulting formulation yields dispersions and optical responses of cavity exciton polaron-polaritons, enabling investigations that elucidate material properties in strong coupling.
We present a microscopic semi-analytical theory for the description of organic molecules interacting strongly with a cavity mode. Exciton-vibration coupling within the molecule and exciton-cavity interaction are treated on an equal footing by employing a temperature-dependent variational approach. The interplay between strong exciton-vibration coupling and strong exciton-cavity coupling gives rise to a hybrid ground state, which we refer to as the lower polaron polariton. Explicit expressions for the ground-state wave function, the zero-temperature quasiparticle weight of the lower polaron pol…
We consider the propagation of a quantized polarized light in a magneto-optically manipulated atomic ensemble with a tripod configuration. Polariton formalism is applied when the medium is subjected to a washboard magnetic field under electromagnetically induced transparency. The dark-state polariton with multiple components is achieved. We analyze quantum dynamics of the dark-state polariton by some experiment data from rubidium D1-line. It is found that one component propagates freely, however the wavepacket trajectory of the other component performs Bloch oscillations.
This paper investigates a novel hybrid cavity QED-optomechanics situation. We solve the Hamiltonian problem of a cavity coupled both to a two-level atom via a Jaynes-Cummings coupling and to a mechanical motion via radiation pressure coupling. The atom-cavity polariton number operator commutes with the total Hamiltonian leading to an exact analytical solution involving tripartite atom-cavity-mechanics polarons. Under optical pumping of polaronic transitions the system displays unusual atom-assisted cooling and amplification of mechanical motion. We demonstrate the possibility to obtain enhance…

In the regime of strong coupling between molecular excitons and confined optical modes, the intra-molecular degrees of freedom are profoundly affected, leading to a reduced vibrational dressing of polaritons compared to bare electronically excited states. However, existing models only describe a single vibrational mode in each molecule, while actual molecules possess a large number of vibrational degrees of freedom and additionally interact with a continuous bath of phononic modes in the host medium in typical experiments. In this work, we investigate a small ensemble of molecules with an arbi…
We explore the electroluminescence efficiency for a quantum mechanical model of a large number of molecular emitters embedded in an optical microcavity. We characterize the circumstances under which a microcavity enhances harvesting of triplet excitons via reverse intersystem-crossing (R-ISC) into singlet populations that can emit light. For that end, we develop a time-local master equation in a variationally optimized frame which allows for the exploration of the population dynamics of chemically relevant species in different regimes of emitter coupling to the condensed phase vibrational bath…
In a previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 047202 (2019)] a translationally invariant framework called quantum-electrodynamical Bloch (QED-Bloch) theory was introduced for the description of periodic materials in homogeneous magnetic fields and strongly coupled to the quantized photon field in the optical limit. For such systems, we show that QED-Bloch theory predicts the existence of fractal polaritonic spectra as a function of the cavity coupling strength. In addition, for the energy spectrum as a function of the relative magnetic flux we find that a terahertz cavity can modify the standard H…
We present a microscopic theory for nonlinear optical spectroscopy of N molecules in an optical cavity. A quantum Langevin analytical expression is derived for the time- and frequency-resolved signals accounting for arbitrary numbers of vibrational excitations. We identify clear signatures of the polariton-polaron interaction from multidimensional projections of the signal, e.g., pathways and timescales. Cooperative dynamics of cavity polaritons against intramolecular vibrations is revealed, along with a cross talk between long-range coherence and vibronic coupling that may lead to localizatio…
Following the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle, transient dynamics of a one-dimensional Holstein polaron with diagonal and off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling in an external electric field is studied by employing the multi-D$_2$ {\it Ansatz}, also known as a superposition of the usual Davydov D$_2$ trial states. Resultant polaron dynamics has significantly enhanced accuracy, and is in perfect agreement with that derived from the hierarchy equations of motion method. Starting from an initial broad wave packet, the exciton undergoes typical Bloch oscillations. Adding weak exci…
We study Frenkel exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensation in a two-dimensional defect-free triangular photonic crystal with an organic semiconductor active medium containing bound excitons with dipole moments oriented perpendicular to the layers. We find photonic Bloch modes of the structure and consider their strong coupling regime with the excitonic component. Using the Gross- Pitaevskii equation for exciton polaritons and the Boltzmann equation for the external exciton reservoir, we demonstrate the formation of condensate at the points in reciprocal space where photon group velocity equ…
We investigate the single-photon transport properties of a one-dimensional coupled cavity array (CCA) containing a single qubit in its central site by coupling the CCA to two transmission lines supporting propagating bosonic modes with linear dispersion. We find that even in the nominally weak light-matter coupling regime, the transmission through a long array exhibits two ultra-narrow resonances corresponding to long-lived self-protected polaritonic states localized around the site containing the qubit. The lifetime of these states is found to increase exponentially with the number of array s…
Condensed matter physics and quantum electrodynamics (QED) have been long considered as distinct disciplines. This situation is changing by the progress in cavity QED materials. Motivated by these advances we aim to bridge these fields by merging fundamental concepts coming from both sides. In the first part of the thesis we present how non-relativistic QED can be constructed and we discuss the light-matter interaction in different gauges and that neglecting particular quadratic terms can lead to instabilities. In the second part, we revisit the Sommerfeld model of the free electron gas in cav…
We propose a scheme for investigating the nonequilibrium aspects of small-polaron physics using an array of superconducting qubits and microwave resonators. This system, which can be realized with transmon or gatemon qubits, serves as an analog simulator for a lattice model describing a nonlocal coupling of a quantum particle (excitation) to dispersionless phonons. We study its dynamics following an excitation-phonon (qubit-resonator) interaction quench using a numerically exact approach based on a Chebyshev-moment expansion of the time-evolution operator of the system. We thereby glean hereto…
We consider the fundamental problem of high temperature phase transitions in the system of high density two-level atoms off-resonantly interacting with a pump field in the presence of optical collisions (OCs) and placed in the cavity. OCs are considered in the framework of thermalization of atomic dressed state (DS) population. For the case of a strong atom-field coupling condition we analyze the problem of thermodynamically equilibrium superradiant phase transition for the order parameter representing a real amplitude of cavity mode and taking place as a result of atomic DSs thermalization pr…
We report the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the Bloch bands with off-diagonal periodic potential (ODPP), which simultaneously plays the role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman field. This model can be realized using two independent Raman couplings in the same three level system, in which the time-reversal symmetry ensures the energy degeneracy between the two states with opposite momenta. We find that these two Raman couplings can be used to tune the spin polarization in momentum space, thus greatly modifies the effective scatterings over the Bloch bands. We observe a transition from …
We propose an analog superconducting quantum simulator for a one-dimensional model featuring momentum-dependent (nonlocal) electron-phonon couplings of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger and "breathing-mode" types. Because its corresponding vertex function depends on both the electron- and phonon quasimomenta, this model does not belong to the realm of validity of the Gerlach-Löwen theorem that rules out any nonanalyticities in single-particle properties. The superconducting circuit behind the proposed simulator entails an array of transmon qubits and microwave resonators. By applying microwave driving fiel…
In the presence of symmetries, one-dimensional quantum systems can exhibit topological order, which in many cases can be characterized by a quantized value of the many-body geometric Zak or Berry phase. We establish that this topological Zak phase is directly related to the Zak phase of an elementary quasiparticle excitation in the system. By considering various systems, we establish this connection for a number of different interacting phases including: the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, p-wave topological superconductors, and the Haldane chain. Crucially, in contrast to the bulk many-body Zak p…
Strongly coupled quantum dot-cavity systems provide a non-linear configuration of hybridized light-matter states with promising quantum-optical applications. Here, we investigate the coherent interaction between strong laser pulses and quantum dot-cavity polaritons. Resonant excitation of polaritonic states and their interaction with phonons allow us to observe coherent Rabi oscillations and Ramsey fringes. Furthermore, we demonstrate complete coherent control of a quantum dot-photonic crystal cavity based quantum-bit. By controlling the excitation power and phase in a two-pulse excitation sch…
Phonon interactions are inevitable in cavity quantum electrodynamical systems based on solid-state emitters or fluorescent molecules, where vibrations of the lattice or chemical bonds couple to the electronic degrees of freedom. Due to the non-Markovian response of the vibrational environment, it remains a significant theoretical challenge to describe such effects in a computationally efficient manner. This is particularly pronounced when the emitter-cavity coupling is comparable to or larger than the typical phonon energy range, and polariton formation coincides with vibrational dressing of t…

Ultracold atoms uniformly filling an optical lattice can be treated like an artificial crystal. An implementation including the atomic occupation of a single excited atomic state can be represented by a two-component Bose-Hubbard model. Its phase diagram exhibits a quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulator phase. The dynamics of electronic excitations governed by electrostatic dipole-dipole interactions in the ordered regime can be well described by wave-like collective excitations called excitons. Here we present an extensive study of such excitons for a wide range of geo…
Recently, exciton-photon strong coupling has been proposed as a means to control and enhance energy transfer in ensembles of organic molecules. Here, we demonstrate that the exciton dynamics in an archetypal purple bacterial photosynthetic unit, composed of six LH2 antennas surrounding a single LH1 complex, is greatly modified by its interaction with an optical cavity. We develop a Bloch-Redfield master equation approach that accounts for the interplay between the B800 and B850 bacteriochlorophyll molecules within each LH2 antenna, as well as their interactions with the central LH1 complex. Us…
We analyze theoretically the single-photon excitation and transmission spectra of a strong-coupling hybrid optomechanics, where a two-level system (TLS) is coupled to the mechanical resonator (MR), generating the Jaynes-Cummings-type polariton doublets. In our model, both the optomichanical coupling and the TLS-MR coupling are strong. In this parameter region, the polaron-assisted excitation and reemission processes can strongly affect the single-photon excitation and output spectra of the cavity. We find that the fine structure around each sideband can be used to characterize the TLS-MR and t…
