We show two examples in which the dynamical Casimir effect can be achieved by modulating the Kerr or higher order nonlinearities. In the first case the cavity field is coupled to an arbitrary number of qubits or an harmonic oscillator via the dipole interaction. In the second case, the modulation of the nonlinearities is accompanied by the off-resonance modulation of the cavity frequency. We present the analytic description of the phenomenon and supplement it with numeric simulations, demonstrating that photons can be created from vacuum and the resulting hyper-Poissonian photon statistics is very different from the squeezed vacuum state.
An analogue model for controllable Casimir radiation in a nonlinear cavity with amplitude-modulated pumping: Generation and quantum statistical properties
We study the dynamical Casimir effect in an electromagnetic cavity containing a Kerr medium. We obtain approximate expressions for the time evolution operator as well as for the number operator in the Heisenberg representation. We have found that the generation of photons from quantum vacuum is strongly affected by the presence of the Kerr medium, sharing physical features with the case of two two-level atoms in a cavity with oscillating walls. The nonlinear medium produces a saturation effect in the photon generation which shows strong oscillations whose frequency increases with the intensity…
In this paper, we theoretically propose and investigate a feasible experimental scheme for realizing the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) of phonons in an optomechanical setup formed by a ground-state precooled mechanical oscillator (MO) inside a Fabry-P{é}rot cavity, which is driven by an amplitude-modulated classical laser field in the dispersive (far-detuned) regime. The time modulation of the driving field leads to the parametric amplification of the mechanical vacuum fluctuations of the MO, which results in the generation of Casimir phonons over time scales longer than the cavity lifetime. …
The scenario of a single-mode cavity with harmonically modulated frequency is revisited in the presence of strongly detuned qubit or cyclic qutrit. It is found that when the qubit frequency is close to $3ν$ there is a peak in the photon generation rate via four-photon transitions for the modulation frequency $4ν$, where $ν$ is the average cavity frequency. Effective five-photon processes can occur for the modulation frequency $5ν$ in the presence of a cyclic qutrit, and the corresponding transition rates exhibit series of peaks. Closed analytical description is derived for the unitary evolutio…
We show that even small nonlinearities significantly affect particle production in the dynamical Casimir effect at large evolution times. To that end, we derive the effective Hamiltonian and resum leading loop corrections to the particle flux in a massless scalar field theory with time-dependent Dirichlet boundary conditions and quartic self-interaction. To perform the resummation, we assume small deviations from the equilibrium and employ a kind of rotating wave approximation. Besides that, we consider a quantum circuit analog of the dynamical Casimir effect, which is also essentially nonline…
Cavity optomechanics has proven to be a field of research rich with possibilities for studying motional cooling, squeezing, quantum entanglement and metrology in solid state systems. While to date most studies have focused on the modulation of the cavity frequency by the moving element, the emergence of new materials will soon allow to explore the influences of nonlinear optical effects. We therefore study in this work the effects due to a nonlinear position-modulated self-Kerr interaction and find that this leads to an effective coupling that scales with the square of the photon number, meani…
Nonlinear terms in the equations of motion can induce secularly growing loop corrections to correlation functions. Recently such corrections were shown to affect the particle production by a nonuniformly moving ideal mirror. We extend this conclusion to the cases of ideal vibrating cavity and single semitransparent mirror. These models provide natural IR and UV scales and allow a more accurate study of the loop behavior. In both cases we confirm that two-loop correction to the Keldysh propagator quadratically grows with time. This growth indicates a breakdown of the semiclassical approximation…
Temporal modulation of the quantum vacuum through fast motion of a neutral body or fast changes of its optical properties is known to promote virtual into real photons, the so-called dynamical Casimir effect. Empowering modulation protocols with spatial control could enable to shape the spectral, spatial, spin, and entanglement properties of the emitted photon pairs. Space-time quantum metasurfaces have been proposed as a platform to realize this physics via modulation of their optical properties. Here, we report the mechanical analog of this phenomenon by considering systems whose lattice str…

We study unconventional cavity optomechanics and the acoustic analogue of radiation pressure to show the possibility of nonlinear coherent control of phonons in the acoustic quantum vacuum. Specifically, we study systems where a quantized optical field effectively modifies the frequency of an acoustic resonator. We present a general method to enhance such a nonlinear interaction by employing an intermediate qubit. Compared with conventional optomechanical systems, the roles of mechanical and optical resonators are interchanged, and the boundary condition of the phonon resonator can be modulate…
We consider a superconducting qubit coupled to the nonstationary transmission line cavity with modulated frequency taking into account energy dissipation. Previously, it was demonstrated that in the case of a single nonadiabatical modulation of a cavity frequency there are two channels of a two-level system excitation which are due to the absorption of Casimir photons and due to the counterrotating wave processes responsible for the dynamical Lamb effect. We show that the parametric periodical modulation of the resonator frequency can increase dramatically the excitation probability. Remarkabl…
