We use the Schwinger-Dyson equations in the presence of a thermal bath, in order to study chiral symmetry breaking in a system of massless Dirac fermions interacting through pseudo quantum electrodynamics (PQED3), in (2+1) dimensions. We show that there is a critical temperature $T_c$, below which chiral symmetry is broken, and a corresponding mass gap is dynamically generated, provided the coupling is above a certain, temperature dependent, critical value $α_c$. The ratio between the energy gap and the critical temperature for this model is estimated to be $2 π$. These results are confirmed by analytical and numerical investigations of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the electron. In addition, we calculate the first finite-temperature corrections to the static Coulomb interaction. The relevance of this result in the realm of condensed matter systems, like graphene, is briefly discussed.
We analyze quantization of noncommutative chiral electrodynamics in the enveloping algebra formalism in linear order in noncommutativity parameter $θ$. Calculations show that divergences exist and cannot be removed by ordinary renormalization, however they can be removed by the Seiberg-Witten redefinition of fields. Performing the redefinitions explicitly, we obtain renormalizable lagrangian and discuss the influence of noncommutativity on field propagation. Noncommutativity affects the propagation of chiral fermions only: half of the fermionic modes become massive and birefringent.
It has been conjectured in the literature that renormalizability of the $θ$-expanded noncommutative gauge theories improves when one takes into account full nonuniqueness of the Seiberg-Witten expansion, which relates noncommutative (`high-energy') with commutative (`low-energy') fields. In order to check this conjecture we analyze renormalizability of the noncommutative chiral electrodynamics: we quantize the action which contains all possible terms implied by the SW map. After renormalization we arrive at a different theory in which the relation between the coupling constants is changed. Thi…
In our previous article Phys. Rev. Lett. 127 (2021) 271601, we announced a novel 'democratic' Lagrangian formulation of general nonlinear electrodynamics in four dimensions that features electric and magnetic potentials on equal footing. Here, we give an expanded and more detailed account of this new formalism, and then proceed to push it significantly further by building the corresponding Lagrangian theories of higher form field interactions in arbitrary dimensions. Special attention is given to interactions of chiral 2k-forms in 4k+2 dimensions, with further details for 2-forms in 6 dimensio…
Relations between the various formulations of nonlinear p-form electrodynamics with conformal-invariant weak-field and strong-field limits are clarified, with a focus on duality invariant (2n-1)-form electrodynamics and chiral 2n-form electrodynamics in Minkowski spacetime of dimension D=4n and D=4n+2, respectively. We exhibit a new family of chiral 2-form electrodynamics in D=6 for which these limits exhaust the possibilities for conformal invariance; the weak-field limit is related by dimensional reduction to the recently discovered ModMax generalisation of Maxwell's equations. For n>1 we sh…
We study the dynamical mass generation in Pseudo Quantum Electrodynamics (PQED) coupled to the Gross-Neveu (GN) interaction, in (2+1) dimensions, at both zero and finite temperatures. We start with a gapless model and show that, under particular conditions, a dynamically generated mass emerges. In order to do so, we use a truncated Schwinger-Dyson equation, at the large-N approximation, in the imaginary-time formalism. In the instantaneous-exchange approximation (the static regime), we obtain two critical parameters, namely, the critical number of fermions $N_c(T)$ and the critical coupling co…
The strong-field limit for the 2-form potential on an M5-brane yields a conformal chiral 2-form electrodynamics in six dimensions, with gauge-invariant self-interactions but no adjustable coupling constant; the stress tensor is that of a null fluid. Lorentz invariance can be made manifest via an interpretation as a tensionless `space-filling M5-brane', or as a truncation of the infra-red dynamics of an M5-brane in AdS7 x S4.
We consider the one loop effective action in four dimensional Euclidean space for a background chiral field coupled to a spinor field. It proves possible to find an exact expression for this action if the mass $m$ of the spinor vanishes. If $m$ does not vanish, one can make a perturbative expansion in powers of the axial field that contributes to the chiral field, while treating the contribution of the vector field exactly when it is a constant. The analogous problem in two dimensions is also discussed.
The Schwinger model at finite temperature is analyzed using the Thermofield Dynamics formalism. The operator solution due to Lowenstein and Swieca is generalized to the case of finite temperature within the thermofield bosonization approach. The general properties of the statistical-mechanical ensemble averages of observables in the Hilbert subspace of gauge invariant thermal states are discussed. The bare charge and chirality of the Fermi thermofields are screened, giving rise to an infinite number of mutually orthogonal thermal ground states. One consequence of the bare charge and chirality …
We study a nonlocal theory that combines both the Pseudo quantum electrodynamics (PQED) and Chern-Simons actions among two-dimensional electrons. In the static limit, we conclude that the competition of these two interactions yields a Coulomb potential with a screened electric charge given by $e^2/(1+θ^2)$, where $θ$ is the dimensionless Chern-Simons parameter. This could be useful for describing the substrate interaction with two-dimensional materials and the doping dependence of the dielectric constant in graphene. In the dynamical limit, we calculate the effective current-current action of …
Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in three dimensional ($d=3$) quantum electrodynamics is understood as annihilation of an infrared-stable fixed point that describes the large-N conformal phase by another unstable fixed point at a critical number of fermions $N=N_c$. We discuss the root of universality of $N_c$ in this picture, together with some features of the phase boundary in the $(d,N)$ plane. In particular, it is shown that as $d\rightarrow 4$, $N_c\rightarrow 0$ with a constant slope, our best estimate of which suggests that $N_c = 2.89$ in $d=3$.
The recent generalization of the Lowenstein-Swieca operator solution of Quantum Electrodynamics in 1+1 dimensions to finite temperature in Thermofield Dynamics is further generalized to include a non-vanishing chemical potential. The operator solution to the Euler-Lagrange equations respecting the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger condition is constructed. Two forms of this condition and their associated solutions are discussed. The correlation functions of an arbitrary number of chiral densities are computed in the thermal theta-vacuum.
We study the impact of Lorentz violating terms on a physical observable for both electrodynamics of chiral matter and an Abelian Higgs-like model in $3+1$ dimensions. Our calculation is done within the framework of the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent, variables formalism. Interestingly enough, for electrodynamics of chiral matter we obtain a logarithmic correction to the usual static Coulomb potential. Whereas for a Abelian Higgs model with a Lorentz-breaking term, our result displays new corrections to the Yukawa potential.

Relatively low crossover temperature suggests that chiral symmetry restoration in QCD may well be described within the low-energy effective theory. The shape of the pseudocritical line in the T-mu plane is estimated within this assumption. No critical endpoint is found for physical values of quark masses.
In the framework of Carrol-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics we calculate the spectral distribution of the Cherenkov radiation (CHR) produced by a charge moving at constant velocity in a chiral medium. We find zero, one or two Cherenkov angles according to the relation between the velocity of the particle and the refraction index of the medium.
In a quantum electrodynamics theory that is realized by critical scaling and anomalous dimensions, the action is not chiral invariant and there are no dynamical Goldstone or Higgs boson bound states. In the mean-field approximation to a chiral invariant four-fermion theory the associated mean-field sector action is not chiral invariant either and it also possesses no dynamical bound states, with Goldstone and Higgs bosons instead being generated by an accompanying four-fermion residual interaction. In this paper we show that if a critical scaling electrodynamics in which the dimension $d_θ$ of…
Pseudo-Quantum Electrodynamics (PQED) provides an excellent description of the interaction between charged particles confined to a plane. When we couple pseudo-gauge field with a bosonic matter field, we obtain the so-called Scalar Pseudo-Quantum Electrodynamics (SPQED). In this work, we make a perturbative analysis of SPQED via Feynman diagrams. We compute the one loop Green functions: bosonic field self-energy, electromagnetic field self-energy, and vertex corrections. Finally, we consider the non-relativistic interaction potential between two bosonic particles. We compute the radiative corr…
A previous formal derivation of the effective chiral Lagrangian for low-lying pseudoscalar mesons from first-principles QCD without approximations [Wang et al., Phys. Rev. D61, (2000) 54011] is generalized to further include scalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons. In the large Nc limit and with an Abelian approximation, we show that the properties of the newly added mesons in our formalism are determined by the corresponding underlying fundamental homogeneous Bethe--Salpeter equation in the ladder approximation, which yields the equations of motion for the scalar, vector, and axial-vector mes…
The ground state of quantum chromodynamics in sufficiently strong external magnetic fields and at moderate baryon chemical potential is a chiral soliton lattice (CSL) of neutral pions. We investigate the interplay between the CSL structure and dynamical electromagnetic fields. Our main result is that in presence of the CSL background, the two physical photon polarizations and the neutral pion mix, giving rise to two gapped excitations and one gapless mode with a nonrelativistic dispersion relation. The nature of this mode depends on the direction of its propagation, interpolating between a cir…
Recent sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations of (2+1)-dimensional lattice quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) with $N_f$ flavors of fermions on the square lattice have found evidence of continuous quantum phase transitions between a critical phase and a gapped valence-bond-solid (VBS) phase for flavor numbers $N_f=4$, $6$, and $8$. We derive the critical theory for these transitions, the chiral $O(2)$ QED$_3$-Gross-Neveu model, and show that the latter is equivalent to the gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Using known large-$N_f$ results for the latter, we estimate the order paramete…
We establish a new self-consistent Einstein-Maxwell-axion model based on the Lagrangian, which is linear in the pseudoscalar (axion) field and its four-gradient and includes the four-vector of macroscopic velocity of the axion system as a whole. We consider extended equations of the axion electrodynamics, modified gravity field equations, and discuss nonstationary effects in the phenomenon of optical activity induced by axions.
We scrutinize the novel chiral transport phenomenon driven by spacetime torsion, namely the chiral torsional effect (CTE). We calculate the torsion-induced chiral currents with finite temperature, density and curvature in the most general torsional gravity theory. The conclusion complements the previous study on the CTE by including curvature and substantiates the relation between the CTE and the Nieh-Yan anomaly. We also analyze the response of chiral torsional current to an external electromagnetic field. The resulting topological current is analogous to that in the axion electrodynamics.
We determine the curvature of the pseudo-critical line of strong interactions by means of numerical simulations at imaginary chemical potentials. We consider $N_f=2+1$ stout improved staggered fermions with physical quark masses and the tree level Symanzik gauge action, and explore four different sets of lattice spacings, corresponding to $N_t = 6,8,10,12$, in order to extrapolate results to the continuum limit. Our final estimate is $κ= 0.0135(20)$.
