In this paper we show that the basic external (i.e. not determined by the equations) object in Classical electrodynamics equations is a complex structure. In the 3-dimensional standard form of Maxwell equations this complex structure $\mathcal{I}$ participates implicitly in the equations and its presence is responsible for the so called duality invariance. We give a new form of the equations showing explicitly the participation of $\mathcal{I}$. In the 4-dimensional formulation the complex structure is extracted directly from the equations, it appears as a linear map $Φ$ in the space of 2-forms on $\mathbb{R}^4$. It is shown also that $Φ$ may appear through the equivariance properties of the new formulation of the theory. Further we show how this complex structure $Φ$ combines with the Poincare isomorphism $\mathfrak{P}$ between the 2-forms and 2-tensors to generate all well known and used in the theory (pseudo)metric constructions on $\mathbb{R}^4$, and to define the conformal symmetry properties. The equations of Extended Electrodynamics (EED) do not also need these pseudometrics as beforehand necessary structures. A new formulation of the EED equations in terms of a generalized Lie derivative is given.
The Staruszkiewicz quantum model of the long-range structure in electrodynamics is reviewed in the form of a Weyl algebra. This is followed by a personal view on the asymptotic structure of quantum electrodynamics.
We point out that recently published analyses of null and timelike infinity and long-range structures in electrodynamics to large extent rediscover results present in literature. At the same time, some of the conclusions these recent works put forward may prove controversial. In view of these facts we find it desirable to revisit the analysis taken up more than two decades ago, starting from earlier works on null infinity by other authors.
We investigate the causal structure of general nonlinear electrodynamics and determine which Lagrangians generate an effective metric conformal to Minkowski. We also proof that there is only one analytic nonlinear electrodynamics presenting no birefringence.
We propose a simple method to reduce a general p-form electrodynamics with respect to the standard Gauss constraints. The canonical structure of the reduced theory displays a p-dependent sign which makes the essential difference between theories with different parities of p. This feature was observed recently in the corresponding quantization condition for p-brane dyons. It suggests that these two structures are closely related.
We consider a complex covariant form of the macroscopic Maxwell equations, in a moving medium or at rest, following the original ideas of Minkowski. A compact, Lorentz invariant, derivation of the energy-momentum tensor and the corresponding differential balance equations are given. Conservation laws and quantization of electromagnetic field will be discussed in this covariant approach elsewhere.
A suitable parameterization of space-time in terms of one complex and three quaternionic imaginary units allows Lorentz transformations to be implemented as multiplication by complex-quaternionic numbers rather than matrices. Maxwell's equations reduce to a single equation.
In 1999, A. Connes and D. Kreimer have discovered the Hopf algebra structure on the Feynman graphs of scalar field theory. They have found that the renormalization can be interpreted as a solving of some Riemann -- Hilbert problem. In this work a generalization of their scheme to the case of quantum electrodynamics is proposed. The action of the gauge group on the Hopf algebra of diagrams are defined and the proof that this action is consistent with the Hopf algebra structure is given.
The Riemann -- Silberstein -- Majorana -- Oppengeimer approach to the Maxwell electrodynamics in presence of electrical sources and arbitrary media is investigated within the matrix formalism. The symmetry of the matrix Maxwell equation under transformations of the complex rotation group SO(3.C) is demonstrated explicitly. In vacuum case, the matrix form includes four real $4 \times 4$ matrices $α^{b}$. In presence of media matrix form requires two sets of $4 \times 4$ matrices, $α^{b}$ and $β^{b}$ -- simple and symmetrical realization of which is given. Relation of $α^{b}$ and $β^{b}$ to the …
We investigate the existence of action for both the electric and magnetic sectors of Galilean Electrodynamics using Helmholtz conditions. We prove the existence of unique action in magnetic limit with the addition of a scalar field in the system. The check also implies the non existence of action in the electric sector of Galilean electrodynamics. Dirac constraint analysis of the theory reveals that there are no local degrees of freedom in the system. Further, the theory enjoys a reduced but an infinite dimensional subalgebra of Galilean conformal symmetry algebra as global symmetries. The ful…
An algebra previously proposed as an asymptotic field structure in electrodynamics is considered in respect of localization properties of fields. Fields are 'spatially local' -- localized in regions resulting as unions of two intersecting (solid) lightcones: a future- and a past-lightcone. This localization remains in concord with the usual idealizations connected with the scattering theory. Fields thus localized naturally include infrared characteristics normally placed at spacelike infinity and form a structure respecting Gauss law. When applied to the description of the radiation of an exte…
We investigate $2n$-dimensional axion electrodynamics for the purpose of exploring a higher-group structure underlying it. This is manifested as a Green-Schwarz transformation of the background gauge fields that couple minimally to the conserved currents. The $n=3$ case is studied most intensively. We derive the identities of correlation functions among the global symmetry generators by using a gauge transformation that maps two correlation functions with each other. A key ingredient in this computation is given by the Green-Schwarz transformation and the 't Hooft anomalies associated with the…
In this paper, in the frame of Extended Electrodynamics (EED), we study some of the consequences that can be obtained from the introduced and used by Maxwell equations complex structure \mathcal{J} in the space of 2-forms on \mathbb{R}^4, and also used in EED. First we give the vacuum EED equations with some comments. Then we recall some facts about the invariance group $G$ (with Lie algebra \mathcal{G}) of the standard complex structure $J$ in \mathbb{R}^2. After defining and briefly studying a representation of $G$ in the space of 2-forms on \mathbb{R}^4 and the joint action of $G$ in the sp…
An axiomatic approach to electrodynamics reveals that Maxwell electrodynamics is just one instance of a variety of theories for which the name electrodynamics is justified. They all have in common that their fundamental input are Maxwell's equations $\textrm{d} F = 0$ (or $F = \textrm{d} A$) and $\textrm{d} H = J$ and a constitutive law $H = # F$ which relates the field strength two-form $F$ and the excitation two-form $H$. A local and linear constitutive law defines what is called local and linear pre-metric electrodynamics whose best known application are the effective description of electro…
It is shown here that symmetric hyperbolicity, which guarantees well-posedness, leads to a set of two inequalities for matrices whose elements are determined by a given theory. As a part of the calculation, carried out in a mostly-covariant formalism, the general form for the symmetrizer, valid for a general Lagrangian theory, was obtained. When applied to nonlinear electromagnetism linearly coupled to curvature, the inequalities lead to strong constraints on the relevant quantities, which were illustrated with applications to particular cases. The examples show that non-linearity leads to con…

We present a concise new definition of Finsler spacetimes that generalize Lorentzian metric manifolds and provide consistent backgrounds for physics. Extending standard mathematical constructions known from Finsler spaces we show that geometric objects like the Cartan non-linear connection and its curvature are well-defined almost everywhere on Finsler spacetimes, also on their null structure. This allows us to describe the complete causal structure in terms of timelike and null curves; these are essential to model physical observers and the propagation of light. We prove that the timelike dir…
We assume that the unperturbed operators $A_0$ are known. Then, the fact that the scattering operators $S$ and the unperturbed operators $A_0$ are pairwise permutable provides some important information about the structure of the scattering operators. Using this information and the ideas from the theory of generalized wave operators, we present a new approach to the divergence problems in quantum electrodynamics. We show that the so called infrared divergences appeared because the deviations of the initial and final waves from the free waves were not taken into account.
We introduce a relativistic splitting structure as a means to map fields and equations of electromagnetism from curved four-dimensional space-time to three-dimensional observer's space. We focus on a minimal set of mathematical structures that are directly motivated by the language of the physical theory. Space-time, world-lines, time translation, space platforms, and time synchronization all find their mathematical counterparts. The splitting structure is defined without recourse to coordinates or frames. This is noteworthy since, in much of the prevalent literature, observers are identified …
