We study the fermionic zero modes around 1 instanton operators for 5d supersymmetric gauge theories of type USp, SO and the exceptional groups. The major motivation is to try to understand the global symmetry enhancement pattern in these theories.
The nonabelian Berry phase is computed in the T dualized quantum mechanics obtained from the USp(2k) matrix model. Integrating the fermions, we find that each of the spacetime points X_ν^{(i)} is equipped with a pair of su(2) Lie algebra valued pointlike singularities located at a distance m_{(f)} from the orientifold surface. On a four dimensional paraboloid embedded in the five dimensional Euclidean space, these singularities are recognized as the BPST instantons.
We consider interesting Seiberg dualities for $Usp$ gauge theories with an antisymmetric, $8$ fundamentals and no superpotential. We reduce to three dimensions and systematically analyze deformations triggered by real and complex masses, reaching a plethora of $\mathcal{N}\!=\!2$ dualities for $U(N)$ and $Usp(2N)$ gauge theories, possibly with monopole superpotentials and Chern-Simons interactions. Special cases of these "exceptional dualities" are: supersymmetry enhancement dualities, "duality appetizers" and many known dualities relating rank-$1$ gauge groups. The $4d$ $\mathcal{N}\!=\!1$ $U…
We apply the instanton counting method to study a class of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories with alternating $\mathrm{SO}$ and $\mathrm{USp}$ gauge groups. We compute the partition function in the $Ω$-background and express it as functional integrals over density functions. Applying the saddle point method, we derive the limit shape equations which determine the dominant instanton configurations in the flat space limit. The solution to the limit shape equations gives the Seiberg-Witten geometry of the low energy effective theory. As an illustrating example,…
Extending recent work on SU gauge theory, we engineer local string models for N=1 four-dimensional SO and USp gauge theories coupled to matter in the fundamental. The local models are type IIB orientifolds with D7 branes on a curved orientifold 7-plane, and matter realized by adding D3 branes on the orientifold plane. The Higgs branches of the SO and USp theories can be matched with the moduli spaces of SO and USp instantons on the compact four-dimensional part of the D7 branes worldvolume. The R-charge of the gauge theories is identified with a U(1) symmetry on the worldvolume of an Euclidean…
The worldvolume theory of D3-branes probing four D7-branes and an O7-plane on $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_2$ is given by a supersymmetric USp x USp gauge theory. We demonstrate that, at least for a particular choice of the holonomy at infinity, we can go to a dual description of the gauge theory, where we can add a Fayet-Iliopoulos term describing the blowing-up of the orbifold to the smooth ALE space. This allows us to express the moduli space of SO(8) instantons on the smooth ALE space as a hyperkähler quotient of a flat space times the Higgs branch of a class S theory. We also discuss a genera…
We investigate instanton expansions of partition functions of several toric E-string models using local mirror symmetry and elliptic modular forms. We also develop a method to obtain the Seiberg--Witten curve of E-string with arbitrary Wilson lines with the help of elliptic functions.
We propose new ADHM-like methods to compute the Coulomb branch instanton partition functions of 5d and 6d supersymmetric gauge theories, with certain exceptional gauge groups or exceptional matters. We study $G_2$ theories with $n_{\bf 7}\leq 3$ matters in ${\bf 7}$, and $SO(7)$ theories with $n_{\bf 8}\leq 4$ matters in the spinor representation ${\bf 8}$. We also study the elliptic genera of self-dual instanton strings of 6d SCFTs with exceptional gauge groups or matters, including all non-Higgsable atomic SCFTs with rank $2$ or $3$ tensor branches. Some of them are tested with topological v…
The richness of 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories with a UV fixed point at infinite coupling is due to the existence of local disorder operators known as instanton operators. By considering the Higgs branch of $SU(2)$ gauge theories with $N_f \leq 7$ flavours at finite and infinite coupling, we write down the explicit chiral ring relations between instanton operators, the glueball superfield and mesons. Exciting phenomena appear at infinite coupling: the glueball superfield is no longer nilpotent and the classical chiral ring relations are quantum corrected by instanton operators bilinears. We also …
According to a recent classification of 6d (1,0) theories within F-theory there are only six "pure" 6d gauge theories which have a UV superconformal fixed point. The corresponding gauge groups are $SU(3),SO(8),F_4,E_6,E_7$, and $E_8$. These exceptional models have BPS strings which are also instantons for the corresponding gauge groups. For $G$ simply-laced, we determine the 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ worldsheet theories of such BPS instanton strings by a simple geometric engineering argument. These are given by a twisted $S^2$ compactification of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of type $H_2, D_4,…
We show how to obtain the instanton partition function of N=2 SYM with exceptional gauge group EFG using blow-up recursion relations derived by Nakajima and Yoshioka. We compute the two instanton contribution and match it with the recent proposal for the superconformal index of rank 2 SCFTs with E6, E7 global symmetry.
The moduli space of k G-instantons on R^4 for a classical gauge group G is known to be given by the Higgs branch of a supersymmetric gauge theory that lives on Dp branes probing D(p + 4) branes in Type II theories. For p = 3, these (3 + 1) dimensional gauge theories have N = 2 supersymmetry and can be represented by quiver diagrams. The F and D term equations coincide with the ADHM construction. The Hilbert series of the moduli spaces of one instanton for classical gauge groups is easy to compute and turns out to take a particularly simple form which is previously unknown. This allows for a G …
Some admissible gauge groups of N=4 Chern-Simons gauged supergravity in three dimensions with exceptional scalar manifolds $G_{2(2)}/SO(4)$, $F_{4(4)}/USp(6)\times SU(2)$, $E_{6(2)}/SU(6)\times SU(2)$, $E_{7(-5)}/SO(12)\times SU(2)$ and $E_{8(-24)}/E_7\times SU(2)$ are identified. In particular, a complete list of all possible gauge groups is given for the theory with $G_{2(2)}/SO(4)$ coset space. We also study scalar potentials for all of these gauge groups and find some critical points. In the case of $F_{4(4)}/USp(6)\times SU(2)$ target space, we give some semisimple gauge groups which are …
We revisit the issue of M5-brane instanton corrections to the superpotential in F-theory compactifications on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds. Elaborating on concrete geometries, we compare the instanton zero modes for non-perturbative F-theory models with the zero modes in their perturbative Sen limit. The fermionic matter zero modes localized on the intersection of the instanton with the space-time filling D7-branes show up in a geometric way in F-theory. Methods for their computation are developed and, not surprisingly, exceptional gauge group structures do appear. Finally, quite …
The moduli space of instantons on C^2 for any simple gauge group is studied using the Coulomb branch of N=4 gauge theories in three dimensions. For a given simple group G, the Hilbert series of such an instanton moduli space is computed from the Coulomb branch of the quiver given by the over-extended Dynkin diagram of G. The computation includes the cases of non-simply-laced gauge groups G, complementing the ADHM constructions which are not available for exceptional gauge groups. Even though the Lagrangian description for non-simply laced Dynkin diagrams is not currently known, the prescriptio…
We study the BPS states of non-critical strings which arise for zero size instantons of exceptional groups. This is accomplished by using F-theory and M-theory duals and by employing mirror symmetry to compute the degeneracy of membranes wrapped around 2-cycles of the Calabi-Yau threefold. We find evidence for a number of novel physical phenomena, including having infinitely many light states with the first lightest state including a nearly massless gravitino.
Small instantons of exceptional groups arise geometrically by a collapsing del Pezzo surface in a CY. We use this to explain the physics of a 4-brane probe in Type I' compactification to 9 dimensions.
We obtain the periods and one-instanton coefficient of the N=2 superrsymmetric Yang-Mills theory with the exceptional gauge group E_6. These calculations are based on the E_6 spectral curve and the obtained one-instanton coefficient is in agreement with the microscopic results.
We study various holographic RG flow solutions involving warped asymptotically locally Euclidean (ALE) spaces of $A_{N-1}$ type. A two-dimensional RG flow from a UV (2,0) CFT to a (4,0) CFT in the IR is found in the context of (1,0) six dimensional supergravity, interpolating between $AdS_3\times S^3/\mathbb{Z}_N$ and $AdS_3\times S^3$ geometries. We also find solutions involving non trivial gauge fields in the form of SU(2) Yang-Mills instantons on ALE spaces. Both flows are of vev type, driven by a vacuum expectation value of a marginal operator. RG flows in four dimensional field theories a…
We treat the topic of the closures of the nilpotent orbits of the Lie algebras of Exceptional groups through their descriptions as moduli spaces, in terms of Hilbert series and the highest weight generating functions for their representation content. We extend the set of known Coulomb branch quiver theory constructions for Exceptional group minimal nilpotent orbits, or reduced single instanton moduli spaces, to include all orbits of Characteristic Height 2, drawing on extended Dynkin diagrams and the unitary monopole formula. We also present a representation theoretic formula, based on localis…
We study the low-energy effective theory of N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with the exceptional gauge group $G_{2}$. We obtain the Picard-Fuchs equations for the $G_{2}$ spectral curve and compute multi-instanton contribution to the prepotential. We find that the spectral curve is consistent with the microscopic supersymmetric instanton calculus. It is also shown that $G_{2}$ hyperelliptic curve does not reproduce the microscopic result.
We generalize Nakajima-Yoshioka blowup equations to arbitrary gauge group with hypermultiplets in arbitrary representations. Using our blowup equations, we compute the instanton partition functions for 4d N=2 and 5d N=1 gauge theories for arbitrary gauge theory with a large class of matter representations, without knowing explicit construction of the instanton moduli space. Our examples include exceptional gauge theories with fundamentals, SO(N) gauge theories with spinors, and SU(6) gauge theories with rank-3 antisymmetric hypers. Remarkably, the instanton partition function is completely det…
Recently a prescription to compute the superconformal index for all theories of class S was proposed. In this paper we discuss some of the physical information which can be extracted from this index. We derive a simple criterion for the given theory of class S to have a decoupled free component and for it to have enhanced flavor symmetry. Furthermore, we establish a criterion for the "good", the "bad", and the "ugly" trichotomy of the theories. After interpreting the prescription to compute the index with non-maximal flavor symmetry as a residue calculus we address the computation of the index…
In this paper we begin revisiting the little string theories (LSTs) which govern the dynamics of the instantonic heterotic $E_8 \times E_8$ five-branes probing ALE singularities, building on and extending previous results on the subject by Aspinwall and Morrison as well as Blum and Intriligator. Our focus are the cases corresponding to choices of non-trivial flat connections at infinity. The latter are in particular interesting for the exceptional ALE singularities, where a brane realization in Type I$'$ is lacking. Our approach to determine these models is based on 6d conformal matter: we det…
The prepotential of N=2* supersymmetric theories with unitary gauge groups in an Omega-background satisfies a modular anomaly equation that can be recursively solved order by order in an expansion for small mass. By requiring that S-duality acts on the prepotential as a Fourier transform we generalise this result to N=2* theories with gauge algebras of the D and E type and show that their prepotentials can be written in terms of quasi-modular forms of SL(2,Z). The results are checked against microscopic multi-instanton calculus based on localization for the A and D series and reproduce the kno…
We discuss the modular anomaly equation satisfied by the the prepotential of 4-dimensional N=2* theories and show that its validity is related to S-duality. The recursion relations that follow from the modular anomaly equation allow one to write the prepotential in terms of (quasi)-modular forms, thus resumming the instanton contributions. These results can be checked against the microscopic multi-instanton calculus in the case of classical algebras, but are valid also for the exceptional E6, E7, E8, F4 and G2 algebras, where direct computations are not available.
We study various cases of dualities between $\cal{N}$$=1$ 5d supersymmetric gauge theories. We motivate the dualities using brane webs, and provide evidence for them by comparing the superconformal index. In many cases we find that the classical global symmetry is enhanced by instantons to a larger group including one where the enhancement is to the exceptional group $G_2$.
We begin an investigation of supersymmetric theories based on exceptional groups. The flat directions are most easily parameterized using their correspondence with gauge invariant polynomials. Symmetries and holomorphy tightly constrain the superpotentials, but due to multiple gauge invariants other techniques are needed for their full determination. We give an explicit treatment of $G_2$ and find gaugino condensation for $N_f\leq 2$, and an instanton generated superpotential for $N_f=3$. The analogy with $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories continues with modified and unmodified quantum moduli spaces for…
We consider supersymmetric gauge theories on $S^5$ with a negative Yang-Mills coupling in their large $N$ limits. Using localization we compute the partition functions and show that the pure ${\mathrm{SU}}(N)$ gauge theory descends to an ${\mathrm{SU}}(N/2)_{+N/2}\times {\mathrm{SU}}(N/2)_{-N/2}\times {\mathrm{SU}}(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theory as the inverse 't Hooft coupling is taken to negative infinity for $N$ even. The Yang-Mills coupling of the ${\mathrm{SU}}(N/2)_{\pm N/2}$ is positive and infinite, while that on the ${\mathrm{SU}}(2)$ goes to zero. We also show that the odd $N$ case ha…
We study (non-renormalizable) five dimensional supersymmetric field theories. The theories are parametrized by quark masses and a gauge coupling. We derive the metric on the Coulomb branch exactly. We use stringy considerations to learn about new non-trivial interacting field theories with exceptional global symmetry $E_n$ ($E_8$, $E_7$, $E_6$, $E_5=Spin(10)$, $E_4=SU(5)$, $E_3=SU(3)\times SU(2)$, $E_2=SU(2)\times U(1)$ and $E_1=SU(2)$). Their Coulomb branch is ${\bf R}^+$ and their Higgs branch is isomorphic to the moduli space of $E_n$ instantons. One of the relevant operators of these theor…

We examine the low-energy dynamics of four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and calculate the values of the gluino condensate for all simple gauge groups. By initially compactifying the theory on a cylinder we are able to perform calculations in a controlled weakly-coupled way for small radius. The dominant contributions to the path integral on the cylinder arise from magnetic monopoles which play the role of instanton constituents. We find that the semi-classically generated superpotential of the theory is the affine Toda potential for an associated twisted affine algebra. We determi…
The Higgs branch of minimally supersymmetric five dimensional SQCD theories increases in a significant way at the UV fixed point when the inverse gauge coupling is tuned to zero. It has been a long standing problem to figure out how, and to find an exact description of this Higgs branch. This paper solves this problem in an elegant way by proposing that the Coulomb branches of three dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories, named "Exceptional Sequences", provide the solution to the problem. Thus, once again, 3d ${\cal N}=4$ Coulomb branches prove to be useful tools in solv…
We study 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories that describe the low-energy dynamics of D1-branes at Calabi-Yau fourfold (CY$_4$) singularities. On general grounds, the holomorphic sector of these theories---matter content and (classical) superpotential interactions---should be fully captured by the topological $B$-model on the CY$_4$. By studying a number of examples, we confirm this expectation and flesh out the dictionary between B-brane category and supersymmetric quiver: the matter content of the supersymmetric quiver is encoded in morphisms between B-branes (that is…
We consider the pure supersymmetric Yang--Mills theories placed on a small 3-dimensional spatial torus with higher orthogonal and exceptional gauge groups. The problem of constructing the quantum vacuum states is reduced to a pure mathematical problem of classifying the flat connections on 3-torus. The latter problem is equivalent to the problem of classification of commuting triples of elements in a connected simply connected compact Lie group which is solved in this paper. In particular, we show that for higher orthogonal SO(N), N > 6, and for all exceptional groups the moduli space of flat …
