We study the approximate message-passing decoder for sparse superposition coding on the additive white Gaussian noise channel and extend our preliminary work [1]. We use heuristic statistical-physics-based tools such as the cavity and the replica methods for the statistical analysis of the scheme. While superposition codes asymptotically reach the Shannon capacity, we show that our iterative decoder is limited by a phase transition similar to the one that happens in Low Density Parity check codes. We consider two solutions to this problem, that both allow to reach the Shannon capacity: i) a power allocation strategy and ii) the use of spatial coupling, a novelty for these codes that appears to be promising. We present in particular simulations suggesting that spatial coupling is more robust and allows for better reconstruction at finite code lengths. Finally, we show empirically that the use of a fast Hadamard-based operator allows for an efficient reconstruction, both in terms of computational time and memory, and the ability to deal with very large messages.
In this project, the behavior of Generalized Approximate Message-Passing Decoder for BSC and Z Channel is studied using i.i.d matrices for constructing the codewords. The performance of GAMP in AWGN Channel is already evaluated in the previous scientific work of Jean Barbier, therefore, this project mainly focuses on the performance of GAMP decoder for BSC and Z Channel. We evaluate the performance of the GAMP decoder for sparse superposition codes at various settings and compare the performance of decoder for different channels and parameters.
In this paper, we propose a finite alphabet message passing algorithm for LDPC codes that replaces the standard min-sum variable node update rule by a mapping based on generic look-up tables. This mapping is designed in a way that maximizes the mutual information between the decoder messages and the codeword bits. We show that our decoder can deliver the same error rate performance as the conventional decoder with a much smaller message bit-width. Finally, we use the proposed algorithm to design a fully unrolled LDPC decoder hardware architecture.
In this paper, we consider quantized decoding of LDPC codes on the binary symmetric channel. The binary message passing algorithms, while allowing extremely fast hardware implementation, are not very attractive from the perspective of performance. More complex decoders such as the ones based on belief propagation exhibit superior performance but lead to slower decoders. The approach in this paper is to consider message passing decoders that have larger message alphabet (thereby providing performance improvement) as well as low complexity (thereby ensuring fast decoding). We propose a class of …
Binary message-passing decoders for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are studied by using extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts. The channel delivers hard or soft decisions and the variable node decoder performs all computations in the L-value domain. A hard decision channel results in the well-know Gallager B algorithm, and increasing the output alphabet from hard decisions to two bits yields a gain of more than 1.0 dB in the required signal to noise ratio when using optimized codes. The code optimization requires adapting the mixing property of EXIT functions to the case of binar…
Superposition codes are efficient for the Additive White Gaussian Noise channel. We provide here a replica analysis of the performances of these codes for large signals. We also consider a Bayesian Approximate Message Passing decoder based on a belief-propagation approach, and discuss its performance using the density evolution technic. Our main findings are 1) for the sizes we can access, the message-passing decoder outperforms other decoders studied in the literature 2) its performance is limited by a sharp phase transition and 3) while these codes reach capacity as $B$ (a crucial parameter …
We address noisy message-passing decoding of lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) codes over additive white Gaussian noise channels. Message-passing decoders in which certain processing units iteratively exchange messages are common for decoding LDPC codes. The exchanged messages are in general subject to internal noise in hardware implementation of these decoders. We model the internal decoder noise as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) degrading exchanged messages. Using Gaussian approximation of the exchanged messages, we perform a two-dimensional density evolution analysis for the noisy LDPC d…
Sparse regression codes with approximate message passing (AMP) decoding have gained much attention in recent times. The concepts underlying this coding scheme extend to unsourced access with coded compressed sensing (CCS), as first pointed out by Fengler, Jung, and Caire. More specifically, their approach uses a concatenated coding framework with an inner AMP decoder followed by an outer tree decoder. In the original implementation, these two components work independently of each other, with the tree decoder acting on the static output of the AMP decoder. This article introduces a novel framew…
Sparse superposition codes, or sparse regression codes (SPARCs), are a recent class of codes for reliable communication over the AWGN channel at rates approaching the channel capacity. Approximate message passing (AMP) decoding, a computationally efficient technique for decoding SPARCs, has been proven to be asymptotically capacity-achieving for the AWGN channel. In this paper, we refine the asymptotic result by deriving a large deviations bound on the probability of AMP decoding error. This bound gives insight into the error performance of the AMP decoder for large but finite problem sizes, g…
We study the behavior of Approximate Message-Passing, a solver for linear sparse estimation problems such as compressed sensing, when the i.i.d matrices -for which it has been specifically designed- are replaced by structured operators, such as Fourier and Hadamard ones. We show empirically that after proper randomization, the structure of the operators does not significantly affect the performances of the solver. Furthermore, for some specially designed spatially coupled operators, this allows a computationally fast and memory efficient reconstruction in compressed sensing up to the informati…
Sparse superposition (SS) codes were originally proposed as a capacity-achieving communication scheme over the additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGNC) [1]. Very recently, it was discovered that these codes are universal, in the sense that they achieve capacity over any memoryless channel under generalized approximate message-passing (GAMP) decoding [2], although this decoder has never been stated for SS codes. In this contribution we introduce the GAMP decoder for SS codes, we confirm empirically the universality of this communication scheme through its study on various channels and we p…
The decoding performance of product codes and staircase codes based on iterative bounded-distance decoding (iBDD) can be improved with the aid of a moderate amount of soft information, maintaining a low decoding complexity. One promising approach is error-and-erasure (EaE) decoding, whose performance can be reliably estimated with density evolution (DE). However, the extrinsic message passing (EMP) decoder required by the DE analysis entails a much higher complexity than the simple intrinsic message passing (IMP) decoder. In this paper, we simplify the EMP decoding algorithm for the EaE channe…
Sparse superposition codes were recently introduced by Barron and Joseph for reliable communication over the AWGN channel at rates approaching the channel capacity. The codebook is defined in terms of a Gaussian design matrix, and codewords are sparse linear combinations of columns of the matrix. In this paper, we propose an approximate message passing decoder for sparse superposition codes, whose decoding complexity scales linearly with the size of the design matrix. The performance of the decoder is rigorously analyzed and it is shown to asymptotically achieve the AWGN capacity with an appro…
The error floor phenomenon observed with LDPC codes and their graph-based, iterative, message-passing (MP) decoders is commonly attributed to the existence of error-prone substructures -- variously referred to as near codewords, trapping sets, absorbing sets, or pseudocodewords -- in a Tanner graph representation of the code. Many approaches have been proposed to lower the error floor by designing new LDPC codes with fewer such substructures or by modifying the decoding algorithm. Using a theoretical analysis of iterative MP decoding in an idealized trapping set scenario, we show that a contri…
Motivated by recently derived fundamental limits on total (transmit + decoding) power for coded communication with VLSI decoders, this paper investigates the scaling behavior of the minimum total power needed to communicate over AWGN channels as the target bit-error-probability tends to zero. We focus on regular-LDPC codes and iterative message-passing decoders. We analyze scaling behavior under two VLSI complexity models of decoding. One model abstracts power consumed in processing elements ("node model"), and another abstracts power consumed in wires which connect the processing elements ("w…
We propose an iterative decoding method, which we call turbo-CS, for the reception of concatenated source-channel encoded sparse signals transmitted over an AWGN channel. The turbo-CS encoder applies 1-bit compressed sensing as a source encoder concatenated serially with a convolutional channel encoder. At the turbo-CS decoder, an iterative joint source-channel decoding method is proposed for signal reconstruction. We analyze, for the first time, the convergence of turbo-CS decoder by determining an EXIT chart of the constituent decoders. We modify the soft-outputs of the decoder to improve th…
We propose a quantized decoding algorithm for low- density parity-check codes where the variable node update rule of the standard min-sum algorithm is replaced with a look-up table (LUT) that is designed using an information-theoretic criterion. We show that even with message resolutions as low as 3 bits, the proposed algorithm can achieve better error rates than a floating-point min-sum decoder. Moreover, we study in detail the effect of different decoder design parameters, like the design SNR and the LUT tree structure on the performance of our decoder, and we propose some complexity reducti…
Low-rate and short-packet transmissions are important for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). In this paper, we put forth a new family of sparse superposition codes for URLLC, called block orthogonal sparse superposition (BOSS) codes. We first present a code construction method for the efficient encoding of BOSS codes. The key idea is to construct codewords by the superposition of the orthogonal columns of a dictionary matrix with a sequential bit mapping strategy. We also propose an approximate maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) decoder with two stages. The approximate MAP …
We propose a novel binary message passing decoding algorithm for product-like codes based on bounded distance decoding (BDD) of the component codes. The algorithm, dubbed iterative BDD with scaled reliability (iBDD-SR), exploits the channel reliabilities and is therefore soft in nature. However, the messages exchanged by the component decoders are binary (hard) messages, which significantly reduces the decoder data flow. The exchanged binary messages are obtained by combining the channel reliability with the BDD decoder output reliabilities, properly conveyed by a scaling factor applied to the…
An ultra-high throughput low-density parity check (LDPC) decoder with an unrolled full-parallel architecture is proposed, which achieves the highest decoding throughput compared to previously reported LDPC decoders in the literature. The decoder benefits from a serial message-transfer approach between the decoding stages to alleviate the well-known routing congestion problem in parallel LDPC decoders. Furthermore, a finite-alphabet message passing algorithm is employed to replace the variable node update rule of the standard min-sum decoder with look-up tables, which are designed in a way that…
In this paper, we present the block Markov superposition transmission of BCH (BMST-BCH) codes, which can be constructed to obtain a very low error floor. To reduce the implementation complexity, we design a low complexity iterative sliding-window decoding algorithm, in which only binary and/or erasure messages are processed and exchanged between processing units. The error floor can be predicted by a genie-aided lower bound, while the waterfall performance can be analyzed by the density evolution method. To evaluate the error floor of the constructed BMST-BCH codes at a very low bit error rate…
Being an effective non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique, sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is promising for future wireless communication. Compared with orthogonal techniques, SCMA enjoys higher overloading tolerance and lower complexity because of its sparsity. In this paper, based on deterministic message passing algorithm (DMPA), algorithmic simplifications such as domain changing and probability approximation are applied for SCMA decoding. Early termination, adaptive decoding, and initial noise reduction are also employed for faster convergence and better performance. Numerical…
Non-uniform message quantization techniques such as reconstruction-computation-quantization (RCQ) improve error-correction performance and decrease hardware complexity of low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoders that use a flooding schedule. Layered MinSum RCQ (L-msRCQ) enables message quantization to be utilized for layered decoders and irregular LDPC codes. We investigate field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementations of L-msRCQ decoders. Three design methods for message quantization are presented, which we name the Lookup, Broadcast, and Dribble methods. The decoding performance and h…
Recently, a new class of codes, called sparse superposition or sparse regression codes, has been proposed for communication over the AWGN channel. It has been proven that they achieve capacity using power allocation and various forms of iterative decoding. Empirical evidence has also strongly suggested that the codes achieve capacity when spatial coupling and approximate message passing decoding are used, without need of power allocation. In this note we prove that state evolution (which tracks message passing) indeed saturates the potential threshold of the underlying code ensemble, which app…
This paper presents a new class of sparse superposition codes for low-rates and short-packet communications over the additive white Gaussian noise channel. The new code is orthogonal sparse superposition (OSS) code. A codeword of OSS codes is represented as a superposition of sparse sub-codewords whose support sets are mutually non-overlapping. To construct such codewords in a computationally efficient manner, a successive encoding method is presented. Harnessing the orthogonal property among sub-codewords, a simple yet near-optimal decoding method is proposed, which performs element-wise maxi…
Massive machine type communication (mMTC) has attracted new coding schemes optimized for reliable short message transmission. In this paper, a novel deep learning based near-orthogonal superposition (NOS) coding scheme is proposed for reliable transmission of short messages in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel for mMTC applications. Similar to recent hyper-dimensional modulation (HDM), the NOS encoder spreads the information bits to multiple near-orthogonal high dimensional vectors to be combined (superimposed) into a single vector for transmission. The NOS decoder first estimat…
We propose a novel soft-aided iterative decoding algorithm for product codes (PCs). The proposed algorithm, named iterative bounded distance decoding with combined reliability (iBDD-CR), enhances the conventional iterative bounded distance decoding (iBDD) of PCs by exploiting some level of soft information. In particular, iBDD-CR can be seen as a modification of iBDD where the hard decisions of the row and column decoders are made based on a reliability estimate of the BDD outputs. The reliability estimates are derived using extrinsic message passing for generalized low-density-parity check (G…
We recently showed in [1] the superiority of certain structured coding matrices ensembles (such as partial row-orthogonal) for sparse superposition codes when compared with purely random matrices with i.i.d. entries, both information-theoretically and under practical vector approximate message-passing decoding. Here we generalize this result to binary input channels under generalized vector approximate message-passing decoding [2].We focus on specific binary output channels for concreteness but our analysis based on the replica symmetric method from statistical physics applies to any memoryles…

Belief propagation is a powerful tool in statistical physics, machine learning, and modern coding theory. As a decoding method, it is ubiquitous in classical error correction and has also been applied to stabilizer-based quantum error correction. The algorithm works by passing messages between nodes of the factor graph associated with the code and enables efficient decoding, in some cases even up to the Shannon capacity of the channel. Here we construct a belief propagation algorithm which passes quantum messages on the factor graph and is capable of decoding the classical-quantum channel with…
A lattice decoder which represents messages explicitly as a mixture of Gaussians functions is given. In order to prevent the number of functions in a mixture from growing as the decoder iterations progress, a method for replacing N Gaussian functions with M Gaussian functions, with M < N, is given. A squared distance metric is used to select functions for combining. A pair of selected Gaussians is replaced by a single Gaussian with the same first and second moments. The metric can be computed efficiently, and at the same time, the proposed algorithm empirically gives good results, for example,…
In this paper, we show how to construct a factor graph from a network code. This provides a systematic framework for decoding using message passing algorithms. The proposed message passing decoder exploits knowledge of the underlying communications network topology to simplify decoding. For uniquely decodeable linear network codes on networks with error-free links, only the message supports (rather than the message values themselves) are required to be passed. This proposed simplified support message algorithm is an instance of the sum-product algorithm. Our message-passing framework provides …
To reduce the implementation complexity of a belief propagation (BP) based low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder, shuffled BP decoding schedules, which serialize the decoding process by dividing a complete parallel message-passing iteration into a sequence of sub-iterations, have been proposed. The so-called group horizontal shuffled BP algorithm partitions the check nodes of the code graph into groups to perform group-by-group message-passing decoding. This paper proposes a new grouping technique to accelerate the message-passing rate. Performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed by a …
Sparse regression codes (SPARCs) are a promising coding scheme that can approach the Shannon limit over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels. Previous works have proven the capacity-achieving property of SPARCs with Gaussian design matrices. We generalize these results to right orthogonally invariant ensembles that allow for more structured design matrices. With the Vector Approximate Message Passing (VAMP) decoder, we rigorously demonstrate the exponentially decaying error probability for design matrices that satisfy a certain criterion with the exponentially decaying power allocatio…
In this paper, we propose a new early termination method (ETM) for Luby transform (LT) belief propagation (BP) decoder. The proposed ETM, which we call least reliable messages (LRM), observes only sign alterations of a small cluster in log-likelihood ratio (LLR) messages passing between nodes in BP decoder. Simulation results and complexity analyzes show that LRM significantly lower computational complexity of early termination section in decoder without any performance degradation and decreases the average decoding iteration amounts compared to conventional ETMs in literature. The method can …
In this paper, a new method for decoding Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, based on Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks is proposed. Due to the fact that in neural networks all procedures are processed in parallel, this method can be considered as a viable alternative to Message Passing Algorithm (MPA), with high computational complexity. Our proposed algorithm runs with soft criterion and concurrently does not use probabilistic quantities to decide what the estimated codeword is. Although the neural decoder performance is close to the error performance of Sum Product Algorithm (…
In problems of lossy source/noisy channel coding with side information, the theoretical bounds are achieved using "good" source/channel codes that can be partitioned into "good" channel/source codes. A scheme that achieves optimality in channel coding with side information at the encoder using independent channel and source codes was outlined in previous works. In practice, the original problem is transformed into a multiple-access problem in which the superposition of the two independent codes can be decoded using successive interference cancellation. Inspired by this work, we analyze the sup…
The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) 141.11-O-1 Line Product Code (LPC) provides a rare opportunity to compare maximum-likelihood decoding and message passing. The LPC considered in this paper is intended to serve as the inner code in conjunction with a (255,239) Reed Solomon (RS) code whose symbols are bytes of data. This paper represents the 141.11-O-1 LPC as a bipartite graph and uses that graph to formulate both maximum likelihood (ML) and message passing algorithms. ML decoding must, of course, have the best frame error rate (FER) performance. However, a fixed point i…
This paper studies a generalization of sparse superposition codes (SPARCs) for communication over the complex additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. In a SPARC, the codebook is defined in terms of a design matrix, and each codeword is a generated by multiplying the design matrix with a sparse message vector. In the standard SPARC construction, information is encoded in the locations of the non-zero entries of the message vector. In this paper we generalize the construction and consider modulated SPARCs, where information in encoded in both the locations and the values of the non-zero en…
Sparse superposition codes are a recent class of codes introduced by Barron and Joseph for efficient communication over the AWGN channel. With an appropriate power allocation, these codes have been shown to be asymptotically capacity-achieving with computationally feasible decoding. However, a direct implementation of the capacity-achieving construction does not give good finite length error performance. In this paper, we consider sparse superposition codes with approximate message passing (AMP) decoding, and describe a variety of techniques to improve their finite length performance. These in…
We revisit the error correction scheme of real-valued signals when the codeword is corrupted by gross errors on a fraction of entries and a small noise on all the entries. Combining the recent developments of approximate message passing and the spatially-coupled measurement matrix in compressed sensing we show that the error correction and its robustness towards noise can be enhanced considerably. We discuss the performance in the large signal limit using previous results on state evolution, as well as for finite size signals through numerical simulations. Even for relatively small sizes, the …

Neural decoders were shown to outperform classical message passing techniques for short BCH codes. In this work, we extend these results to much larger families of algebraic block codes, by performing message passing with graph neural networks. The parameters of the sub-network at each variable-node in the Tanner graph are obtained from a hypernetwork that receives the absolute values of the current message as input. To add stability, we employ a simplified version of the arctanh activation that is based on a high order Taylor approximation of this activation function. Our results show that fo…
In this paper, we propose a new class of quantized message-passing decoders for LDPC codes over the BSC. The messages take values (or levels) from a finite set. The update rules do not mimic belief propagation but instead are derived using the knowledge of trapping sets. We show that the update rules can be derived to correct certain error patterns that are uncorrectable by algorithms such as BP and min-sum. In some cases even with a small message set, these decoders can guarantee correction of a higher number of errors than BP and min-sum. We provide particularly good 3-bit decoders for 3-lef…

Hypernetworks were recently shown to improve the performance of message passing algorithms for decoding error correcting codes. In this work, we demonstrate how hypernetworks can be applied to decode polar codes by employing a new formalization of the polar belief propagation decoding scheme. We demonstrate that our method improves the previous results of neural polar decoders and achieves, for large SNRs, the same bit-error-rate performances as the successive list cancellation method, which is known to be better than any belief propagation decoders and very close to the maximum likelihood dec…

Consider data transmission over a binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel using a binary low-density parity-check code. We ask the following question: Given a decoder that takes log-likelihood ratios as input, does it help to modify the log-likelihood ratios before decoding? If we use an optimal decoder then it is clear that modifying the log-likelihoods cannot possibly help the decoder's performance, and so the answer is "no." However, for a suboptimal decoder like the linear programming decoder, the answer might be "yes": In this paper we prove that for certain interesting classes…
This paper addresses the problem of designing LDPC decoders robust to transient errors introduced by a faulty hardware. We assume that the faulty hardware introduces errors during the message passing updates and we propose a general framework for the definition of the message update faulty functions. Within this framework, we define symmetry conditions for the faulty functions, and derive two simple error models used in the analysis. With this analysis, we propose a new interpretation of the functional Density Evolution threshold previously introduced, and show its limitations in case of highl…
For the additive white Gaussian noise channel with average codeword power constraint, sparse superposition codes are developed. These codes are based on the statistical high-dimensional regression framework. The paper [IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 55 (2012), 2541 - 2557] investigated decoding using the optimal maximum-likelihood decoding scheme. Here a fast decoding algorithm, called adaptive successive decoder, is developed. For any rate R less than the capacity C communication is shown to be reliable with exponentially small error probability.
The recent work of Sommer, Feder and Shalvi presented a new family of codes called low density lattice codes (LDLC) that can be decoded efficiently and approach the capacity of the AWGN channel. A linear time iterative decoding scheme which is based on a message-passing formulation on a factor graph is given. In the current work we report our theoretical findings regarding the relation between the LDLC decoder and belief propagation. We show that the LDLC decoder is an instance of non-parametric belief propagation and further connect it to the Gaussian belief propagation algorithm. Our new res…
