We address noisy message-passing decoding of lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) codes over additive white Gaussian noise channels. Message-passing decoders in which certain processing units iteratively exchange messages are common for decoding LDPC codes. The exchanged messages are in general subject to internal noise in hardware implementation of these decoders. We model the internal decoder noise as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) degrading exchanged messages. Using Gaussian approximation of the exchanged messages, we perform a two-dimensional density evolution analysis for the noisy LDPC decoder. This makes it possible to track both the mean, and the variance of the exchanged message densities, and hence, to quantify the threshold of the LDPC code in the presence of internal decoder noise. The numerical and simulation results are presented that quantify the performance loss due to the internal decoder noise. To partially compensate this performance loss, we propose a simple method, based on EXIT chart analysis, to design robust irregular LDPC codes. The simulation results indicate that the designed codes can indeed compensate part of the performance loss due to the internal decoder noise.
In this paper, we propose a finite alphabet message passing algorithm for LDPC codes that replaces the standard min-sum variable node update rule by a mapping based on generic look-up tables. This mapping is designed in a way that maximizes the mutual information between the decoder messages and the codeword bits. We show that our decoder can deliver the same error rate performance as the conventional decoder with a much smaller message bit-width. Finally, we use the proposed algorithm to design a fully unrolled LDPC decoder hardware architecture.
A ternary message passing (TMP) decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check codes is developed. All messages exchanged between variable and check nodes have a ternary alphabet, and the variable nodes exploit soft information from the channel. A density evolution analysis is developed for unstructured and protograph-based ensembles. For unstructured ensembles the stability condition is derived. Optimized ensembles for TMP decoding show asymptotic gains of up to 0.6 dB with respect to ensembles optimized for binary message passing decoding. Finite length simulations of codes from TMP-optimiz…
Low complexity decoding algorithms are necessary to meet data rate requirements in excess of 1 Tbps. In this paper, we study one and two bit message passing algorithms for belief propagation decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and analyze them by density evolution. The variable nodes (VNs) exploit soft information from the channel output. To decrease the data flow, the messages exchanged between check nodes (CNs) and VNs are represented by one or two bits. The newly proposed quaternary message passing (QMP) algorithm is compared asymptotically and in finite length simulations to …
The error floor phenomenon observed with LDPC codes and their graph-based, iterative, message-passing (MP) decoders is commonly attributed to the existence of error-prone substructures -- variously referred to as near codewords, trapping sets, absorbing sets, or pseudocodewords -- in a Tanner graph representation of the code. Many approaches have been proposed to lower the error floor by designing new LDPC codes with fewer such substructures or by modifying the decoding algorithm. Using a theoretical analysis of iterative MP decoding in an idealized trapping set scenario, we show that a contri…
In practice, LDPC codes are decoded using message passing methods. These methods offer good performance but tend to converge slowly and sometimes fail to converge and to decode the desired codewords correctly. Recently, tree-reweighted message passing methods have been modified to improve the convergence speed at little or no additional complexity cost. This paper extends this line of work and proposes a new class of locally optimized reweighting strategies, which are suitable for both regular and irregular LDPC codes. The proposed decoding algorithm first splits the factor graph into subgraph…
Motivated by recently derived fundamental limits on total (transmit + decoding) power for coded communication with VLSI decoders, this paper investigates the scaling behavior of the minimum total power needed to communicate over AWGN channels as the target bit-error-probability tends to zero. We focus on regular-LDPC codes and iterative message-passing decoders. We analyze scaling behavior under two VLSI complexity models of decoding. One model abstracts power consumed in processing elements ("node model"), and another abstracts power consumed in wires which connect the processing elements ("w…
In this paper, we consider quantized decoding of LDPC codes on the binary symmetric channel. The binary message passing algorithms, while allowing extremely fast hardware implementation, are not very attractive from the perspective of performance. More complex decoders such as the ones based on belief propagation exhibit superior performance but lead to slower decoders. The approach in this paper is to consider message passing decoders that have larger message alphabet (thereby providing performance improvement) as well as low complexity (thereby ensuring fast decoding). We propose a class of …
We analyze the performance of quantized min-sum decoding of low-density parity-check codes under unreliable message storage. To this end, we introduce a simple bit-level error model and show that decoder symmetry is preserved under this model. Subsequently, we formulate the corresponding density evolution equations to predict the average bit error probability in the limit of infinite blocklength. We present numerical threshold results and we show that using more quantization bits is not always beneficial in the context of faulty decoders.
Some low-complexity LDPC decoders suffer from error floors. We apply iteration-dependent weights to the degree-3 variable nodes to solve this problem. When the 802.3ca EPON LDPC code is considered, an error floor decrease of more than 3 orders of magnitude is achieved.
We propose a post-processing method for message-passing (MP) decoding of CSS quantum LDPC codes, called stabilizer-inactivation (SI). It relies on inactivating a set of qubits, supporting a check in the dual code, and then running the MP decoding again. This allows MP decoding to converge outside the inactivated set of qubits, while the error on these is determined by solving a small, constant size, linear system. Compared to the state of the art post-processing method based on ordered statistics decoding (OSD), we show through numerical simulations that MP-SI outperforms MP-OSD for different …
We propose a quantized decoding algorithm for low- density parity-check codes where the variable node update rule of the standard min-sum algorithm is replaced with a look-up table (LUT) that is designed using an information-theoretic criterion. We show that even with message resolutions as low as 3 bits, the proposed algorithm can achieve better error rates than a floating-point min-sum decoder. Moreover, we study in detail the effect of different decoder design parameters, like the design SNR and the LUT tree structure on the performance of our decoder, and we propose some complexity reducti…
The Extended Min-Sum (EMS) algorithm for non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) defined over an alphabet of size $q$ operates on truncated messages of length $q'$ to achieve a complexity of the order $q'^2$. In contrast, Walsh-Hadamard (WH) transform based iterative decoders achieve a complexity of the order $q\log q$, which is much larger for $q'<<q$. In this paper, we demonstrate that considerable savings can be achieved by letting WH based decoders operate on truncated messages as well. We concentrate on the direct WH transform and compute the number of operations required if only $q'$ …
A coding scheme based on irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is proposed to send secret messages from a source over the Gaussian wiretap channel to a destination in the presence of a wiretapper, with the restriction that the source can send only binary phase-shift keyed (BPSK) symbols. The secrecy performance of the proposed coding scheme is measured by the secret message rate through the wiretap channel as well as the equivocation rate about the message at the wiretapper. A code search procedure is suggested to obtain irregular LDPC codes that achieve good secrecy performance in s…
A novel adaptive binary decoding algorithm for LDPC codes is proposed, which reduces the decoding complexity while having a comparable or even better performance than corresponding non-adaptive alternatives. In each iteration the variable node decoders use the binary check node decoders multiple times; each single use is referred to as a sub-iteration. To process the sequences of binary messages in each iteration, the variable node decoders employ pre-computed look-up tables. These look-up tables as well as the number of sub-iterations per iteration are dynamically adapted during the decoding …
The error floor of LDPC is revisited as an effect of dynamic message behavior in the so-called absorption sets of the code. It is shown that if the signal growth in the absorption sets is properly balanced by the growth of set-external messages, the error floor can be lowered to essentially arbitrarily low levels. Importance sampling techniques are discussed and used to verify the analysis, as well as to discuss the impact of iterations and message quantization on the code performance in the ultra-low BER (error floor) regime.
To reduce the implementation complexity of a belief propagation (BP) based low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder, shuffled BP decoding schedules, which serialize the decoding process by dividing a complete parallel message-passing iteration into a sequence of sub-iterations, have been proposed. The so-called group horizontal shuffled BP algorithm partitions the check nodes of the code graph into groups to perform group-by-group message-passing decoding. This paper proposes a new grouping technique to accelerate the message-passing rate. Performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed by a …
In this paper we propose a new efficient message passing algorithm for decoding LDPC transmitted over a channel with strong phase noise. The algorithm performs approximate bayesian inference on a factor graph representation of the channel and code joint posterior. The approximate inference is based on an improved canonical model for the messages of the Sum & Product Algorithm, and a method for clustering the messages using the directional statistics framework. The proposed canonical model includes treatment for phase slips which can limit the performance of tracking algorithms. We show simulat…
Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes are usually decoded by running an iterative belief-propagation, or message-passing, algorithm over the factor graph of the code. The traditional message-passing schedule consists of updating all the variable nodes in the graph, using the same pre-update information, followed by updating all the check nodes of the graph, again, using the same pre-update information. Recently several studies show that sequential scheduling, in which messages are generated using the latest available information, significantly improves the convergence speed in terms of number …
We design and assess some practical low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded transmission schemes for the Gaussian broadcast channel with confidential messages (BCC). This channel model is different from the classical wiretap channel model as the unauthorized receiver (Eve) must be able to decode some part of the information. Hence, the reliability and security targets are different from those of the wiretap channel. In order to design and assess practical coding schemes, we use the error rate as a metric of the performance achieved by the authorized receiver (Bob) and the unauthorized receiver (…
The goal of the present paper is the derivation of a framework for the finite-length analysis of message-passing iterative decoding of low-density parity-check codes. To this end we introduce the concept of graph-cover decoding. Whereas in maximum-likelihood decoding all codewords in a code are competing to be the best explanation of the received vector, under graph-cover decoding all codewords in all finite covers of a Tanner graph representation of the code are competing to be the best explanation. We are interested in graph-cover decoding because it is a theoretical tool that can be used to…
For improving coarsely quantized decoding of LDPC codes, we propose a check node aware design of the variable node update. In contrast to previous works, we optimize the variable node to explicitly maximize the mutual information preserved in the check-to-variable instead of the variable-to-check node messages. The extended optimization leads to a significantly different solution for the compression operation at the variable node. Simulation results for regular LDPC codes confirm that the check node aware design, especially for very coarse quantization with 2- or 3-bit messages, achieves perfo…
In this letter, we propose a reliability-based windowed decoding scheme for spatially-coupled (SC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. To mitigate the error propagation along the sliding windowed decoder of the SC LDPC codes, a partial message reservation (PMR) method is proposed where only the reliable messages generated in the previous decoding window are reserved for the next decoding window. We also propose a partial syndrome check (PSC) stopping rule for each decoding window, in which only the complete VNs are checked. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme significantly impr…
An ultra-high throughput low-density parity check (LDPC) decoder with an unrolled full-parallel architecture is proposed, which achieves the highest decoding throughput compared to previously reported LDPC decoders in the literature. The decoder benefits from a serial message-transfer approach between the decoding stages to alleviate the well-known routing congestion problem in parallel LDPC decoders. Furthermore, a finite-alphabet message passing algorithm is employed to replace the variable node update rule of the standard min-sum decoder with look-up tables, which are designed in a way that…
This paper considers density evolution for lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) and multi-edge type low-density parity-check (MET-LDPC) codes over the binary input additive white Gaussian noise channel. We first analyze three singleparameter Gaussian approximations for density evolution and discuss their accuracy under several conditions, namely at low rates, with punctured and degree-one variable nodes. We observe that the assumption of symmetric Gaussian distribution for the density-evolution messages is not accurate in the early decoding iterations, particularly at low rates and with punctured va…
We study the problem of two-user Gaussian multiple access channel (GMAC) in the presence of an external eavesdropper. In this problem, an eavesdropper receives a signal with a lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to the legitimate receiver and all transmitted messages should be kept confidential against the eavesdropper. For this purpose, we propose a secure coding scheme on this channel which utilizes low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes by employing random bit insertion and puncturing techniques. At each encoder, the confidential message with some random bits as a random message are s…
This paper presents a scheme named code hopping (CodeHop) for gaussian wiretap channels based on nonsystematic low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Different from traditional communications, in the CodeHop scheme, the legitimate receiver (Bob) rapidly switches the parity-check matrix upon each correctly received source message block. Given an authenticated public feedback channel, the transmitter's (Alice) parity-check matrix can also be synchronized with the receiver's. As a result, once an eavesdropper (Eve) erroneously decodes a message block, she may not be able to follow the update of s…
Non-uniform message quantization techniques such as reconstruction-computation-quantization (RCQ) improve error-correction performance and decrease hardware complexity of low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoders that use a flooding schedule. Layered MinSum RCQ (L-msRCQ) enables message quantization to be utilized for layered decoders and irregular LDPC codes. We investigate field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementations of L-msRCQ decoders. Three design methods for message quantization are presented, which we name the Lookup, Broadcast, and Dribble methods. The decoding performance and h…
LDPC convolutional codes have been shown to be capable of achieving the same capacity-approaching performance as LDPC block codes with iterative message-passing decoding. In this paper, asymptotic methods are used to calculate a lower bound on the free distance for several ensembles of asymptotically good protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. Further, we show that the free distance to constraint length ratio of the LDPC convolutional codes exceeds the minimum distance to block length ratio of corresponding LDPC block codes.
A new protograph-based framework for message passing (MP) decoding of low density parity-check (LDPC) codes with Hamming weight amplifiers (HWAs), which are used e.g. in the NIST post-quantum crypto candidate LEDAcrypt, is proposed. The scheme exploits the correlations in the error patterns introduced by the HWA using a turbo-like decoding approach where messages between the decoders for the outer code given by the HWA and the inner LDPC code are exchanged. Decoding thresholds for the proposed scheme are computed using density evolution (DE) analysis for belief propagation (BP) and ternary mes…
We consider the design and analysis of coding schemes for the binary input two way relay channel with erasure noise. We are particularly interested in reliable physical layer network coding in which the relay performs perfect error correction prior to forwarding messages. The best known achievable rates for this problem can be achieved through either decode and forward or compute and forward relaying. We consider a decoding paradigm called joint compute and forward which we numerically show can achieve the best of these rates with a single encoder and decoder. This is accomplished by deriving …
We investigate iterative low-resolution message-passing algorithms for quasi-cyclic LDPC codes with horizontal and vertical layered schedules. Coarse quantization and layered scheduling are highly relevant for hardware implementations to reduce the bit width of messages and the number of decoding iterations. As a novelty, this paper compares the two scheduling variants in combination with mutual information maximizing compression operations in variable and check nodes. We evaluate the complexity and error rate performance for various configurations. Dedicated hardware architectures for regular…
A joint sparse-regression-code (SPARC) and low-density-parity-check (LDPC) coding scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) massive unsourced random access (URA) is proposed in this paper. Different from the state-of-the-art covariance-based maximum likelihood (CB-ML) detection scheme, we first split users' messages into two parts. The former part is encoded by SPARCs and tasked to recover part of the messages, the corresponding channel coefficients as well as the interleaving patterns by compressed sensing. The latter part is coded by LDPC codes and then interleaved by the interleave-d…
In this paper, we present a low-complexity joint detection-decoding algorithm for nonbinary LDPC codedmodulation systems. The algorithm combines hard-decision decoding using the message-passing strategy with the signal detector in an iterative manner. It requires low computational complexity, offers good system performance and has a fast rate of decoding convergence. Compared to the q-ary sum-product algorithm (QSPA), it provides an attractive candidate for practical applications of q-ary LDPC codes.
With the use of belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes can achieve near-Shannon limit performance. In order to evaluate the error performance of LDPC codes, simulators running on CPUs are commonly used. However, the time taken to evaluate LDPC codes with very good error performance is excessive. In this paper, efficient LDPC block-code decoders/simulators which run on graphics processing units (GPUs) are proposed. We also implement the decoder for the LDPC convolutional code (LDPCCC). The LDPCCC is derived from a pre-designed quasi-cyclic LDPC block c…
Message-passing iterative decoders for low-density parity-check (LDPC) block codes are known to be subject to decoding failures due to so-called pseudo-codewords. These failures can cause the large signal-to-noise ratio performance of message-passing iterative decoding to be worse than that predicted by the maximum-likelihood decoding union bound. In this paper we address the pseudo-codeword problem from the convolutional-code perspective. In particular, we compare the performance of LDPC convolutional codes with that of their ``wrapped'' quasi-cyclic block versions and we show that the minimu…
In this paper, we propose a class of finite alphabet iterative decoder (FAID), called mutual information-maximizing quantized belief propagation (MIM-QBP) decoder, for decoding regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Our decoder follows the reconstruction-calculation-quantization (RCQ) decoding architecture that is widely used in FAIDs. We present the first complete and systematic design framework for the RCQ parameters, and prove that our design with sufficient precision at node update is able to maximize the mutual information between coded bits and exchanged messages. Simulation resu…
In this paper we propose a very simple but powerful self-correction method for the Min-Sum decoding of LPDC codes. Unlike other correction methods known in the literature, our method does not try to correct the check node processing approximation, but it modifies the variable node processing by erasing unreliable messages. However, this positively affects check node messages, which become symmetric Gaussian distributed, and we show that this is sufficient to ensure a quasi-optimal decoding performance. Monte-Carlo simulations show that the proposed Self-Corrected Min-Sum decoding performs very…
Due to process variation in nanoscale manufacturing, there may be permanently missing connections in information processing hardware. Due to timing errors in circuits, there may be missed messages in intra-chip communications, equivalent to transiently missing connections. In this work, we investigate the performance of message-passing LDPC decoders in the presence of missing connections. We prove concentration and convergence theorems that validate the use of density evolution performance analysis. Arbitrarily small error probability is not possible with missing connections, but we find suita…
We present an analysis, under iterative decoding, of coset LDPC codes over GF(q), designed for use over arbitrary discrete-memoryless channels (particularly nonbinary and asymmetric channels). We use a random-coset analysis to produce an effect that is similar to output-symmetry with binary channels. We show that the random selection of the nonzero elements of the GF(q) parity-check matrix induces a permutation-invariance property on the densities of the decoder messages, which simplifies their analysis and approximation. We generalize several properties, including symmetry and stability from …
In this paper a new message passing algorithm, which takes advantage of both tree-based re-parameterization and the knowledge of short cycles, is introduced for the purpose of decoding LDPC codes with short block lengths. The proposed algorithm is called variable factor appearance probability belief propagation (VFAP-BP) algorithm and is suitable for wireless communications applications, where both good decoding performance and low-latency are expected. Our simulation results show that the VFAP-BP algorithm outperforms the standard BP algorithm and requires a significantly smaller number of it…
Many satellite communication systems operating today employ low cost upconverters or downconverters which create phase noise. This noise can severely limit the information rate of the system and pose a serious challenge for the detection systems. Moreover, simple solutions for phase noise tracking such as PLL either require low phase noise or otherwise require many pilot symbols which reduce the effective data rate. In the last decade we have witnessed a significant amount of research done on joint estimation and decoding of phase noise and coded information. These algorithms are based on the …
In this paper, a new method for decoding Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, based on Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks is proposed. Due to the fact that in neural networks all procedures are processed in parallel, this method can be considered as a viable alternative to Message Passing Algorithm (MPA), with high computational complexity. Our proposed algorithm runs with soft criterion and concurrently does not use probabilistic quantities to decide what the estimated codeword is. Although the neural decoder performance is close to the error performance of Sum Product Algorithm (…
We study incremental redundancy hybrid ARQ (IR-HARQ) schemes based on punctured, finite-length, LDPC codes. The transmission is assumed to take place over time varying binary erasure channels, such as mobile wireless channels at the applications layer. We analyze and optimize the throughput and delay performance of these IR-HARQ protocols under iterative, message-passing decoding. We derive bounds on the performance that are achievable by such schemes, and show that, with a simple extension, the iteratively decoded, punctured LDPC code based IR-HARQ protocol can be made rateless, and operating…
In this paper we study the impact of the processing order of nodes of a bipartite graph, on the performance of an iterative message-passing decoding. To this end, we introduce the concept of neighborhood reliabilities of graph's nodes. Nodes reliabilities are calculated at each iteration and then are used to obtain a processing order within a serial or serial/parallel scheduling. The basic idea is that by processing first the most reliable data, the decoder is reinforced before processing the less reliable one. Using neighborhood reliabilities, the Min-Sum decoder of LDPC codes approaches the …
It is shown how expectation maximization (EM) may be viewed as a message passing algorithm in factor graphs. In particular, a general EM message computation rule is identified. As a factor graph tool, EM may be used to break cycles in a factor graph, and tractable messages may in some cases be obtained where the sum-product messages are unwieldy. As an exemplary application, the paper considers linear Gaussian state space models. Unknown coefficients in such models give rise to multipliers in the corresponding factor graph. A main attraction of EM in such cases is that it results in purely Gau…
In this paper, we show how to construct a factor graph from a network code. This provides a systematic framework for decoding using message passing algorithms. The proposed message passing decoder exploits knowledge of the underlying communications network topology to simplify decoding. For uniquely decodeable linear network codes on networks with error-free links, only the message supports (rather than the message values themselves) are required to be passed. This proposed simplified support message algorithm is an instance of the sum-product algorithm. Our message-passing framework provides …
The broadcast channel with confidential messages is a well studied scenario from the theoretical standpoint, but there is still lack of practical schemes able to achieve some fixed level of reliability and security over such a channel. In this paper, we consider a quasi-static fading channel in which both public and private messages must be sent from the transmitter to the receivers, and we aim at designing suitable coding and modulation schemes to achieve such a target. For this purpose, we adopt the error rate as a metric, by considering that reliability (security) is achieved when a suffici…
Numerical issues related to the occurrence of error floors in floating-point simulations of belief propagation (BP) decoders are examined. Careful processing of messages corresponding to highly-certain bit values can sometimes reduce error floors by several orders of magnitude. Computational solutions for properly handling such messages are provided for the sum-product algorithm (SPA) and several variants.
An irregular LDGM-LDPC code is studied as a sub-code of an LDPC code with some randomly \emph{punctured} output-bits. It is shown that the LDGM-LDPC codes achieve rates arbitrarily close to the channel-capacity of the binary-input symmetric-output memoryless (BISOM) channel with bounded \emph{complexity}. The measure of complexity is the average-degree (per information-bit) of the check-nodes for the factor-graph of the code. A lower-bound on the average degree of the check-nodes of the irregular LDGM-LDPC codes is obtained. The bound does not depend on the decoder used at the receiver. The st…
In this paper, we analyze the error floor of column layered decoders, also known as shuffled decoders, for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes under saturating sum-product algorithm (SPA). To estimate the error floor, we evaluate the failure rate of different trapping sets (TSs) that contribute to the frame error rate in the error floor region. For each such TS, we model the dynamics of SPA in the vicinity of the TS by a linear state-space model that incorporates the information of the layered message-passing schedule. Consequently, the model parameters and the failure rate of the TS change …
This paper addresses the reconstruction of sparse signals from spatially coupled, linear, and noisy measurements. A unified framework of rigorous state evolution is established for developing long-memory message-passing (LM-MP) in spatially coupled systems. LM-MP utilizes all previous messages to compute the current message while conventional MP only uses the latest messages. The unified framework is utilized to propose orthogonal approximate message-passing (OAMP) for spatially coupled systems. The framework for LM-MP is used as a technical tool to prove the convergence of state evolution for…
The minimum pseudoweight is an important parameter related to the decoding performance of LDPC codes with iterative message-passing decoding. In this paper, we consider ensembles of periodically time-varying spatially coupled LDPC (SC-LDPC) codes and the pseudocodewords arising from their finite graph covers of a fixed degree. We show that for certain $(J,K)$-regular SC-LDPC code ensembles and a fixed cover degree, the typical minimum pseudoweight of the unterminated (and associated tail-biting/terminated) SC-LDPC code ensembles grows linearly with the constraint (block) length as the constrai…
Bliss schemes of a run length limited (RLL) codec in combination with an LDPC codec, generate LDPC parity bits over a systematic sequence of RLL channel bits that are inherently redundant as they satisfy e.g. a $d=1$ minimum run length constraint. That is the subsequences consisting of runs of length $d=1$, viz. $...010...$ and $...101...$, cannot occur. We propose to use this redundancy during LDPC decoding in a Bliss scheme by introducing additional $d$-constraint nodes in the factor graph used by the LDPC decoder. The messages sent from these new nodes to the variable or codeword bit nodes …
We introduce an iterative solution to the problem of interference alignment (IA) over MIMO channels based on a message-passing formulation. We propose a parameterization of the messages that enables the computation of IA precoders by a min-sum algorithm over continuous variable spaces -- under this parameterization, suitable approximations of the messages can be computed in closed-form. We show that the iterative leakage minimization algorithm of Cadambe et al. is a special case of our message-passing algorithm, obtained for a particular schedule. Finally, we show that the proposed algorithm c…
The error correction performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes under iterative message-passing decoding is degraded by the presence of certain harmful objects existing in their Tanner graph representation. Depending on the context, such harmful objects are known as stopping sets, trapping sets, absorbing sets, or pseudocodewords. In this paper, we propose a general procedure based on edge spreading that enables the design of quasi-cyclic (QC) spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes (SC-LDPCCs) that are derived from QC-LDPC block codes and possess a significantly reduced mul…
Variational message passing (VMP), belief propagation (BP) and expectation propagation (EP) have found their wide applications in complex statistical signal processing problems. In addition to viewing them as a class of algorithms operating on graphical models, this paper unifies them under an optimization framework, namely, Bethe free energy minimization with differently and appropriately imposed constraints. This new perspective in terms of constraint manipulation can offer additional insights on the connection between different message passing algorithms and is valid for a generic statistic…
Finite alphabet iterative decoders (FAID) with multilevel messages that can surpass BP in the error floor region for LDPC codes on the BSC were previously proposed. In this paper, we propose decimation-enhanced decoders. The technique of decimation which is incorporated into the message update rule, involves fixing certain bits of the code to a particular value. Under appropriately chosen rules, decimation can significantly reduce the number of iterations required to correct a fixed number of errors, while maintaining the good performance of the original decoder in the error floor region. At t…
