We demonstrate theoretically a strong local enhancement of the intensity of the in-plane microwave magnetic field in multilayered structures made from a magneto-insulating yttrium iron garnet (YIG) layer sandwiched between two non-magnetic layers with a high dielectric constant matching that of YIG. The enhancement is predicted for the excitation regime when the microwave magnetic field is induced inside the multilayer by the transducer of a stripline Broadband Ferromagnetic Resonance (BFMR) setup. By means of a rigorous numerical solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation consistently with the Maxwell's equations, we investigate the magnetisation dynamics in the multilayer. We reveal a strong photon-magnon coupling, which manifests itself as anti-crossing of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) magnon mode supported by the YIG layer and the electromagnetic resonance mode supported by the whole multilayered structure. The frequency of the magnon mode depends on the external static magnetic field, which in our case is applied tangentially to the multilayer in the direction perpendicular to the microwave magnetic field induced by the stripline of the BFMR setup. The frequency of the electromagnetic mode is independent of the static magnetic field. Consequently, the predicted photon-magnon coupling is sensitive to the applied magnetic field and thus can be used in magnetically tuneable metamaterials based on simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability achievable thanks to the YIG layer. We also suggest that the predicted photon-magnon coupling may find applications in microwave quantum information systems.
We observe a strong thermally-controlled magnon-mediated interlayer coupling of two ferromagnetic layers via an antiferromagnetic spacer in spin-valve type trilayers. The effect manifests itself as a field-induced coherent switching of the two ferromagnets, which can be controlled by varying temperature and the spacer thickness. We explain the observed behavior as due to a strong hybridization of the ferro- and antiferro-magnetic magnon modes in the trilayer at temperatures just below the Néel temperature of the antiferromagnetic spacer.
We theoretically investigate general existence conditions for broadband bulk large-wavevector (high-k) propagating waves (such as volume plasmon polaritons in hyperbolic metamaterials) in subwavelength periodic multilayer structures. Describing the elementary excitation in the unit cell of the structure by a generalized resonance pole of a reflection coefficient, and using Bloch's theorem, we derive analytical expressions for the band of large-wavevector propagating solutions. We apply our formalism to determine the high-k band existence in two important cases: the well-known metal-dielectric,…
Two-dimensional magnetic insulators can be promising hosts for topological magnons. In this study, we show that ABC-stacked honeycomb lattice multilayers with alternating Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) reveal a rich topological magnon phase diagram. Based on our bandstructure and Berry curvature calculations, we demonstrate jumps in the thermal Hall behavior that corroborate with topological phase transitions triggered by adjusting the DMI and interlayer coupling. We connect the phase diagram of generic multilayers to a bilayer and a trilayer system. We find an even-odd effect amongst…
We design a plasmonic fiber waveguide (PFW) composed of coaxial cylindrical metal-dielectric multilayers in nanoscale, and constitute the corresponding dynamical equations describing the modes of propagation in the PFW with the Kerr nonlinearity in the dielectric layers. The physics is connected to the discrete matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equations, from which the highly confined ring-like solitons in scale of subwavelength are found both for the visible light and the near-infrared light in the self-defocusing condition. Moreover, the confinement could be further improved when increasing the …
We report the experimental observation of collective picosecond magnetization dynamics in [Co/Pd]8 multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The precession frequency shows large and systematic variation from about 5 GHz to about 90 GHz with the decrease in the Co layer thickness from 1.0 nm to 0.22 nm due to the linear increase in the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The damping coefficient 'alpha' is found to be inversely proportional to the Co layer thickness and a linear relation between the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and 'alpha' is established. We discuss the possible re…
We analyze resonant magneto-elastic interactions between standing perpendicular spin wave modes (exchange magnons) and longitudinal acoustic phonon modes in free-standing hybrid metal-ferromagnet bilayer and trilayer structures. Whereas the ferromagnetic layer acts as a magnetic cavity, all metal layers control the frequencies and eigenmodes of acoustic vibrations. The here proposed design allows for achieving and tuning the spectral and spatial modes overlap between phonons and magnons that results in their strong resonant interaction. Realistic simulations for gold-nickel multilayers show th…
Normal-incidence transmission and dispersion properties of optical multilayers and one-dimensional stepwise potential barriers in the non-tunneling regime are analytically investigated. The optical paths of every constituent layer in a multilayer structure, as well as the parameters of every step of the stepwise potential barrier, are constrained by a generalized quarter-wave condition. No other restrictions on the structure geometry is imposed, i.e., the layers are arranged arbitrarily. We show that the density of states (DOS) spectra of the multilayer or barrier in question are subject to in…
Competing magnetic exchange interactions often result in non-collinear magnetic states, such as spin spirals, which break the inversion symmetry and induce ferroelectric polarization. The resulting strong interactions between magnetic and dielectric degrees of freedom lead to a technologically important possibility to control magnetic order by electric fields and to electromagnons, magnetic excitations that can be excited by an electric dipole of the electromagnetic field. Here we study the effects of chiral domain walls on magnetoelectric properties of spiral magnets. We use a quasi-1D model …
Dielectric screening is greatly important to an accurate calculation of the exciton binding energies in two-dimensional materials. In this work, we calculate the dielectric function and 2D polarizability of multilayer (up to three) phosphorene sheets using Density Functional Theory. The 2D polarizabilities are then used in the dielectric screening of the excitonic interaction in multilayer phosphorene quantum dots. In the limit of large quantum dots, excitonic gaps are shown to exhibit very good agreement with state-of-the-art measurements of the optical gaps of multilayer phosphorene sheets d…
The one-dimensional planar magnonic crystals are usually fabricated as a sequence of stripes intentionally or accidentally separated by non-magnetic spacers. The influence of spacers on shaping the spin wave spectra is complex and still not completely clarified. We performed the detailed numerical studies of the one-dimensional single- and bi-component magnonic crystals comprised of a periodic array of thin ferromagnetic stripes separated by non-magnetic spacers. We showed that the dynamic dipolar interactions between the stripes mediated by non-magnetic spacer, even ultra-narrow, significantl…
The magnetization dynamics in nanostructures has been extensively studied in the last decades, and nanomagnetism has evolved significantly over that time, discovering new effects, developing numerous applications, and identifying promising new directions. This includes magnonics, an emerging research field oriented on the study of spin-wave dynamics and their applications. In this context, thin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) offer interesting opportunities to study spin waves, in particular, due to out-of-plane magnetization in remanence or at relatively weak …
The optical spectra of fractal multilayer dielectric structures have been shown to possess spectral scalability, which has been found to be directly related to the structure's spatial (geometrical) self-similarity. Phase and amplitude scaling relations, as well as effects of finite structure size, have been derived.
We present a theoretical investigation of the polarization plane rotation at light transmission - Faraday effect, through one-dimensional multilayered magneto-photonic systems consisting of periodically distributed magnetic and dielectric layers. We calculate Faraday rotation spectra of photonic-magnonic crystals, where cell (or supercell) is composed of magnetic layer and dielectric layer (or section of dielectric photonic crystal). We found that the Faraday rotation of p-polarized incident light is increasing in the transmission band with the number of magnetic supercells. The increase of Fa…
We show that graphene-dielectric multilayers give rise to an unusual tunability of the Casimir-Lifshitz forces, and allow to easily realize completely different regimes within the same structure. Concerning thermal effects, graphene-dielectric multilayers take advantage from the anomalous features predicted for isolated suspended graphene sheets, even though they are considerably affected by the presence of the dielectric substrate. They can also archive the anomalous non-monotonic thermal metallic behavior by increasing the graphene sheets density and their Fermi energy. In addition to a stro…
We experimentally investigate electron transport in kagome-lattice ferromagnet Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, which is regarded as a time-reversal symmetry broken Weyl semimetal candidate. We demonstrate $dV/dI(I)$ curves with pronounced asymmetric $dV/dI$ spikes, similar to those attributed to current-induced spin-wave excitations in ferromagnetic multilayers. In contrast to multilayers, we observe several $dV/dI$ spikes' sequences at low, $\approx$10$^4$ A/cm$^2$, current densities for a thick single-crystal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ flake in the regime of fully spin-polarized bulk. The spikes at low current de…

Strong coupling between magnons and cavity photons was studied extensively for quantum electrodynamics in the past few years. Recently, the strong magnon-magnon coupling between adjacent layers in magnetic multilayers has been reported. However, the strongly coupled magnons confined in a single nanomagnet remains to be revealed. Here, we report the interaction between different magnon modes in a single magnonic cavity. The intermodel coupling between edge and center magnon modes in the strong coupling regime was approached with a maximum coupling strength of 0.494 GHz and cooperativity of 60.1…
We put forward the concept of an optomagnonic crystal: a periodically patterned structure at the microscale based on a magnetic dielectric, which can co-localize magnon and photon modes. The co-localization in small volumes can result in large values of the photon-magnon coupling at the single quanta level, which opens perspectives for quantum information processing and quantum conversion schemes with these systems. We study theoretically a simple geometry consisting of a one-dimensional array of holes with an abrupt defect, considering the ferrimagnet Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) as the basis ma…
We consider the optical properties of finite systems composed of a series of graphene sheets separated by thin dielectric layers. Because these systems respond as conductors to electric fields in the plane of the graphene sheets and as insulators to perpendicular electric fields, they can be expected to have properties similar to those of hyperbolic metamaterials. We show that under typical experimental conditions graphene/dielectric multilayers have enhanced Purcell factors, and enhanced photonic densities-of-states in both the THz and mid-IR frequency range. These behaviors can be traced to …
We fabricate MoS2 field effect transistors on both SiO2 and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) dielectrics and measure charge carrier mobility in a four-probe configuration. For multilayer MoS2 on SiO2, the mobility is 30-60 cm2/Vs, relatively independent of thickness (15-90 nm), and most devices exhibit unipolar n-type behavior. In contrast, multilayer MoS2 on PMMA shows mobility increasing with thickness, up to 470 cm2/Vs (electrons) and 480 cm2/Vs (holes) at thickness ~50 nm. The dependence of the mobility on thickness points to a long-range dielectric effect of the bulk MoS2 in increasing mobi…
We predict magnon polariton states circulating unidirectionally in a microwave cavity when loaded by a number of magnets on special lines. Realistic finite-element numerical simulations, including dielectric, time-dependent and non-linear effects, confirm the validity of the approximations of a fully analytical input-output model. We find that a phased antenna array can focus all power into a coherent microwave beam with controlled direction and an intensity that scales with the number of magnets.
The main objective of the present work is the development of an analytically tractable model of screened electron-electron and electron-exciton interactions in layered systems composed of two parallel semiconductor quantum wells separated by a dielectric layer. These systems are promising for superconductivity with excitons-polaritons, and spin manipulation. Polarization effects induced by the dielectric mismatch in the nanostructure are taken into account using the image charge method. The obtained analytic expressions are used to calculate screened electron-electron and electron-exciton inte…
This Topical Review presents an overview of the recent experimental results on the quantitative determination of the magnetic exchange parameters in ultrathin magnetic films and multilayers, grown on different substrates. The experimental approaches to probe both the symmetric Heisenberg as well as the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya exchange interaction in ultrathin magnetic films and at interfaces are discussed in detail. It is explained how the experimental spectrum of magnetic excitations can be used to quantify the strength of these interactions.
We consider a hybrid structure formed by graphene and an insulating antiferromagnet, separated by a dielectric of thickness up to $d\simeq 500 \,nm$. When uncoupled, both graphene and the antiferromagnetic surface host their own polariton modes coupling the electromagnetic field with plasmons in the case of graphene, and with magnons in the case of the antiferromagnet. We show that the hybrid structure can host two new types of hybrid polariton modes. First, a surface magnon-plasmon polariton whose dispersion is radically changed by the carrier density of the graphene layer, including a change…
Magnons can generate a spin current, and the standard generating mechanism requires at least one external field. Since this mechanism is often applied to a multilayer system including a magnet and a paramagnetic metal, the system can possess not only the charge current induced by the spin current but also the charge current induced by the external field. The latter is an unnecessary accompaniment. Here we show that the tunneling of a magnon pair between chiral magnets can generate a spin current even without external fields. This phenomenon originates from a phase difference between magnon pai…
The interaction between two magnetic spheres in microwave cavities is studied by Mie scattering theory beyond the magnetostatic and rotating wave approximations. We demonstrate that two spatially separated dielectric and magnetic spheres can be strongly coupled over a long distance by standing cavity modes. The interactions splits acoustical (dark) and optical (bright) modes in a way that can be mapped on a molecular orbital theory of the hydrogen molecule. Breaking the symmetry by assigning different radii to the two spheres introduces "ionic" character to the magnonic bonds. These results il…
A dielectric body couples with electromagnetic fields through radiation pressure and electrostrictive forces, which mediate phonon-photon coupling in cavity optomechanics. In a magnetic medium, according to Korteweg-Helmholtz formula, magnetostrictive forces should arise and lead to phonon-magnon interaction. Here we report such a coupled phonon-magnon system based on ferrimagnetic spheres, which we term as cavity magnomechanics, by analogy to cavity optomechanics. Coherent phonon-magnon interactions, including electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption, are demonstrated. Exciting…
We show that the drift-diffusion mechanism in a normal-metal layer in combination with the resonance electron-magnon interactions at ferromagnet-normal interface of F-N-F heterostucture creates spatial instability modes and, out of these modes, a quasi-stable periodic structure of spin-transfer d.c. current can arise with certain channel step and step-to-radius ratio. The ferromagnetic resonance conditions determine spin-transfer current density. Independent nano-oscillators creating intersecting arrays of channels can phase-lock on sub-micrometer distance, which depends on multilayer geometry…
CoSi single crystal is a known realization of a chiral topological semimetal with simultaneously broken mirror and inversion symmetries. In addition to the symmetry-induced spin-orbit coupling, surface ferromagnetism is known in nominally diamagnetic CoSi structures, which appears due to the distorted bonds and ordered vacancies near the surface. We experimentally investigate electron transport through a thin CoSi flake at high current density. Surprisingly, we demonstrate $dV/dI(I)$ curves which are qualitatively similar to ones for ferromagnetic multilayers with characteristic $dV/dI$ magnon…
Rhombohedral stacked multilayer graphene displays the occurrence of a magnetic surface state at low temperatures. Recent angular resolved photoemission experiments demonstrate the robustness of the magnetic state in long sequences of ABC graphene. Here, by using first-principles calculations, we show that field-effect doping of these graphene multilayers induces a perfect half-metallic behaviour with 100% of spin current polarization already at dopings attainable in conventional field effect transistors with solid state dielectrics. Our work demonstrates the realisability of a new kind of spin…
We study the spin-wave dynamics in nanoscale antidot lattices based on Co/Pd multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements we demonstrate that the variation of the antidot shape introduces significant change in the spin-wave spectra, especially in the lower frequency range. By employing micromagnetic simulations we show that additional peaks observed in the measured spectra are related to narrow shell regions around the antidots, where the magnetic anisotropy is reduced due to the Ga+ ion irradiation during the focused ion beam…

Using one of the methods of quantum nonequilibrium statistical physics we have investigated the spin transport transverse to the normal metal/ferromagnetic insulator interface in hybrid nanostructures. An approximation of the effective parameters, when each of the interacting subsystems (electron spin, magnon, and phonon) is characterized by its own effective temperature have been considered. The generalized Bloch equations which describe the spin-wave current propagation in the dielectric have been derived. Finally, two sides of the spin transport "coin" have been revealed: the diffusive natu…
We report on the controlled switching of domain wall (DW) magnetization in aligned stripe domain structures, stabilized in [Co (0.44 nm)/Pt (0.7 nm)]$_X$ ($X = 48$, 100, 150) multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The switching process, induced by an external magnetic field, is monitored by measuring the evolution of the in-plane magnetization. % We show that the remanent in-plane magnetization originates from the polarization of the Bloch-type DWs. With micromagnetic simulations, we reveal that the reversal of the DW polarization is the result of the emergence and collapse of hor…
We address the intrinsic polarisation and screening of external electric field in a broad range of ordered and twisted configurations of multilayer graphene, using an ab initio approach combining density functional theory and the Wannier function formalism. We show that multilayer graphene is intrinsically polarized due to the crystal field effect, an effect that is often neglected in tight-binding models of twisted bilayer graphene and similar systems. This intrinsic polarization of the order of up to few tens of meVs has different out-of-plane alignments in ordered and twisted graphene multi…
