This Topical Review presents an overview of the recent experimental results on the quantitative determination of the magnetic exchange parameters in ultrathin magnetic films and multilayers, grown on different substrates. The experimental approaches to probe both the symmetric Heisenberg as well as the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya exchange interaction in ultrathin magnetic films and at interfaces are discussed in detail. It is explained how the experimental spectrum of magnetic excitations can be used to quantify the strength of these interactions.
Three experimental techniques sensitive to the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction are discussed: neutron diffraction, Moessbauer gamma-ray diffraction, and resonant x-ray scattering. Classical examples of hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) and MnCO3 crystals are considered in detail
With the perovskite multiferroic RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy) as guidance, we argue that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) provides the microscopic mechanism for the coexistence and strong coupling between ferroelectricity and incommensurate magnetism. We use Monte-Carlo simulations and zero temperature exact calculations to study a model incorporating the double-exchange, superexchange, Jahn-Teller and DMI terms. The phase diagram contains a multiferroic phase between A and E antiferromagnetic phases, in excellent agreement with experiments.
Magnetization measurements of a Mn12mda wheel single-molecule magnet with a spin ground state of S = 7 show resonant tunneling and quantum phase interference, which are established by studying the tunnel rates as a function of a transverse field applied along the hard magnetization axis. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange interaction allows the tunneling between different spin multiplets. It is shown that the quantum phase interference of these transitions is strongly dependent on the direction of the DM vector.
The longitudinal spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) in magnetic insulator$|$non-magnetic metal heterostructures has been theoretically studied primarily with the assumption of an isotropic interfacial exchange coupling. Here, we present a general theory of the SSE in the case of an antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) at the interface, in addition to the usual Heisenberg form. We numerically evaluate the dependence of the spin current on the temperature and bulk DMI using a pyrochlore iridate as a model insulator with all-in all-out (AIAO) ground state configuration. We also compare th…
We present a general approach for studying the dynamics of domain walls in biaxial ferromagnetic stripes with functionally graded Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). By engineering the spatial profile of the DMI parameter we propose the concept of a diode, which implements filtering of domain walls of certain topological charge and helicity. We base our study on phenomenological Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations with additional Zhang-Li spin-transfer terms using a collective variable approach. In the effective equations of motion the gradients of DMI play the role of a driving force which…
Comment on "Theory of helimagnons in itinerant quantum systems" by D.Belitz, T.K.Kirpatrick and A.Rosch and "Cubic magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction at low temperatures" by S.V.Maleyev
By performing density functional calculations, we investigate the origin of the skyrmion state and ferroelectricity in Cu2OSeO3. We find that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions between the two different kinds of Cu ions are extremely strong and induce the helical ground state and the skyrmion state in the absence and presence of magnetic field, respectively. On the basis of the general model for the spin-order induced polarization, we propose that the ferroelectric polarization of Cu2OSeO3 in the collinear ferrimagnetic state arises from an unusual mechanism, i.e., the single-spin-site con…
We examine the stability of the valence bond solid (VBS) phase against the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the bipartite lattice. Despite the VBS is vulnerable against the antiferromagnetic interaction, for example in the Q-J model proposed by Sandvik, where the quantum phase transition occurs at $J^*/Q = 0.04$, we found that on the contrary the VBS is very stable against the DM interaction. The quantum phase transition does not occur until D/Q goes to infinity, where D is the strength of the DM interaction. The VBS in the ALKT model and the Haldane gap system also exhibit the same p…
Using relativistic first-principles calculations, we show that the chemical trend of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in 3d-5d ultrathin films follows Hund's first rule with a tendency similar to their magnetic moments in either the unsupported 3d monolayers or 3d-5d interfaces. We demonstrate that, besides the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect in inversion asymmetric noncollinear magnetic systems, the driving force is the 3d orbital occupation and their spin flip/mixing processes with the spin-orbit active 5d states control directly the sign and magnitude of the DMI. The magnetic chiral…
Exchange bias is usually rationalized invoking spin pinning effects caused by uncompensated antiferromagnetic interfaces. However, for compensated antiferromagnets other extrinsic factors, such as interface roughness or spin canting, have to be considered to produce a small uncompensation. As an alternative, here we propose two (related) possible mechanisms, driven by the intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and ferroelectric polarization, for the explanation of exchange bias effects in perovskites with compensated G-type antiferromagnetism. One of the mechanisms is only active when a m…
We present a comprehensive theory of the magnetic phases in monolayer nickel-based Janus dihalides (NiIBr, NiICl, NiBrCl) through a combination of first-principles calculations and atomistic simulations. Phonon band structure calculations and finite temperature molecular dynamics simulations show that Ni-dihalide Janus monolayers are stable. The parameters of the interacting spin Hamiltonian extracted from ab initio calculations show that nickel-dihalide Janus monolayers exhibit varying degrees of magnetic frustration together with a large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction due to their inheren…
The antiferromagnetic insulating cuprate Ba$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$Cl$_2$ contains folded CuO$_2$ chains with four magnetic copper ions ($S=1/2$) per unit cell. An underlying multiorbital Hubbard model is formulated and the superexchange theory is developed to derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for this cuprate. The resulting spin Hamiltonian involves a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term and a more weak symmetric anisotropic exchange term besides the isotropic exchange interaction. The corresponding Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors of each magnetic Cu-Cu bond in the chain reveal a well defined spatial order. Bo…
The Haldane gap material NENP exhibits anomalies in its Knight shift, far infrared absorption and field-dependent gaps, which have been explained using the staggered $g$-tensor that occurs due to the low crystal symmetry. We point out that the low-temperature susceptibility is also anomalous and that a consistent interpretation of all data may require consideration of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.
We consider the spin-1/2 anisotropic XY chain in a transverse (z) field with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction directed along z-axis in spin space to examine the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the zz, xx and yy dynamic structure factors. Using the Jordan-Wigner fermionization approach we analytically calculate the dynamic transverse spin structure factor. It is governed by a two-fermion excitation continuum. We analyze the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the two-fermion excitation continuum. Other dynamic structure factors which are governed by many-f…
By extending our general spin-current model to non-centrosymmetric spin dimers and performing density functional calculations, we investigate the causes for the helical magnetic order and the origin of the giant ferroelectric polarization of CaMn7O12. The giant ferroelectric polarization is proposed to be caused by the symmetric exchange striction due to the canting of the Mn4+ spin arising from its strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Our study suggests that CaMn7O12 may exhibit a novel magnetoelectric coupling mechanism in which the magnitude of the polarization is governed by the …
We consider the spin-1/2 isotropic XY chain in a (z) transverse magnetic field with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction directed along the z-axis in spin space and examine the effects of the latter interaction on the zz, xx (yy) and xy (yx) dynamic structure factors. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction does not manifest itself in the zz dynamic quantities. In contrast, the xx (yy) and xy (yx) dynamic structure factors show dramatical changes owing to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Implications of our results for electron spin resonance experiments are briefly discussed.
New neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering experiments are used to investigate in detail the field dependence of the magnetic structure and low-energy spin wave spectrum of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya helimagnet Ba_2 Cu Ge_2 O_7. The results suggest that the previously proposed model for the magnetism of this compound (an ideal sinusoidal spin spiral, stabilized by isotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions) needs to be refined. Both new and previously published data can be quantitatively explained by taking into account the Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony (KSEA) term…
We consider a class of one-dimensional compass models with staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interactions in an external transverse magnetic field. Based on the exact solution derived from Jordan-Wigner approach, we study the excitation gap, energy spectra, spin correlations and critical properties at phase transitions. We explore mutual effects of the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the magnetic field on the energy spectra and the ground-state phase diagram. Thermodynamic quantities including the entropy and the specific heat are discussed, and their universal scalings …
We investigate the zero-temperature phase diagram of the nearest-neighbor kagome antiferromagnet in the presence of Dzyaloshinksii-Moriya interaction. We develop a theory for the transition between Z2 spin liquids with bosonic spinons and a phase with antiferromagnetic long-range order. Connections to recent numerical studies and experiments are discussed.
We studied the microscopic mechanism of multiferroics, in particular with the "spin current" model (Hosho Katsura, Naoto Nagaosa and Aleander V. Balatsky, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 057205 (2005)). Starting from a system with helical spin configuration, we solved for the forms of the electron wave functions and analyzed their characteristics. The relation between ferroelectricity and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (I. Dzyaloshinskii, J. Phys. Chem. Solids 4, 241 (1958) and T. Moriya, Phys. Rev. 120, 91 (1960)) is clearly established. There is also a simple relation between the electric polarizati…
We derive the long-wavelength non-linear sigma model for a two-dimensional Heisenberg system in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and pseudodipolar interactions. We show that the system is a non-conventional easy-axis antiferromagnet, displaying an anomalous coupling between the magnetic field and the staggered order parameter. Our results are in good agreement with recent experimental data for undoped La2CuO4 compounds.
Monoaxial chiral magnets can form a noncollinear twisted spin structure called the chiral helimagnetic state. We study magnetic properties of such a chiral helimagnetic state, with emphasis on the effect of itinerant electrons. Modeling a monoaxial chiral helimagnet by a one-dimensional Kondo lattice model with the Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction, we perform a variational calculation to elucidate the stable spin configuration in the ground state. We obtain a chiral helimagnetic state as a candidate for the ground state, whose helical pitch is modulated by the model parameters: the Kondo cou…
A new approach for calculations of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in molecules and crystals is proposed. It is based on the exact perturbation expansion of total energy of weak ferromagnets in the canting angle with the only assumption of local Hubbard-type interactions. This scheme leads to a simple and transparent analytical expression for Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector with a natural separation into spin and orbital contributions. The main problem was transferred to calculations of effective tight-binding parameters in the properly chosen basis including spin-orbit coupling. Test calculat…
Motivated by recent synthetic and theoretical progress we consider magnetism in crystals of multi-nuclear organometallic complexes. We calculate the Heisenberg symmetric exchange and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange. We show how, in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, the interplay of electronic correlations and quantum interference leads to a quasi-one dimensional effective spin model in a typical tri-nuclear complex, Mo$_3$S$_7$(dmit)$_3$, despite its underlying three dimensional band structure. We show that both intra- and inter-molecular spin-orbit coupling can cause an eff…
We present a unified account of magnetic exchange and Raman scattering in the quasi-one-dimensional transition-metal oxide NaV$_2$O$_5$. Based on a cluster-model approach explicit expressions for the exchange integral and the Raman-operator are given. It is demonstrated that a combination of the electronic-structure and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, allowed by symmetry in this material, are responsible for the finite Raman cross-section giving rise to both, one- and two-magnon scattering amplitudes.
We have studied the phase diagram of the one dimensional XXZ model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We have applied the quantum renormalization group (QRG) approach to get the stable fixed points, critical point and the scaling of coupling constants. This model has three phases, ferromagnetic, spin-fluid and Néel phases which are separated by a critical line which depends on the DM coupling constant. We have shown that the staggered magnetization is the order parameter of the system and investigated the influence of DM interaction on the chiral ordering as a helical magnetic order.
We study the 1D ferromagnetic Ising (spin-1/2) model with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We analyze the low energy excitation spectrum and the ground state magnetic phase diagram using the Lanczos method. The DM interaction-dependency is calculated for the low-energy excitation spectrum, spiral order parameter and spin-spin correlation functions. We show that a metamagnetic quantum phase transition occurs between the ferromagnetic and spiral phases. The existence of the metamagnetic phase transition is confirmed, using the variational matrix product states approach.
We have studied the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on kagome Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet using Schwinger boson mean field theory (SBMFT). Within SBMFT framework, Messio et al had argued that the ground state of kagome antiferromagnet is possibly a chiral topological spin liquid (Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 207204 (2012)). Thus, we have computed zero-temperature ground state phase diagram considering the time-reversal breaking states as well as fully symmetric Ansätze. We discuss the relevance of these results in experiments and other studies. Finally, we have computed the static and…
We studied the non-equilibrium short-time dynamics of a spin-1/2 chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions after a sudden quench by a transverse field. We found that inhomogeneous spin-spirals with opposite chiralities propagate from the edges towards the center of the chain. This propagation is accompanied by quantum spin oscillations which decay asymptotically with time. A theoretical description of this phenomenon is given to a good accuracy with the help of numerical calculations with the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group algorithm.
The properties of two quantum spin chain materials, K$_2$CuSO$_4$Cl$_2$ and K$_2$CuSO$_4$Br$_2$, are studied by a variety of experimental techniques, including bulk measurements, neutron spectroscopy and ESR. The hierarchy of relevant terms in the magnetic Hamiltonian is established. It is shown that these two compounds feature substantial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions that are uniform within each chain, but antiparallel in adjacent chains. The result is a peculiar type of frustration of inter-chain interactions, which leads to an unusual field-temperature phase diagram.
On the two-dimensional non-linear $Σ$-model describing a ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we build three families of exact static solutions depending on a single Cartesian variable. One of them describes a clockwise helix configuration, that characterizes the ground state of the system. A second one corresponds to a counterclockwise helix, representing an excited state. These two families of solutions are parameterized by a continuous parameter that depends on the magnetic field and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling. Finally, the third family exists only for isolated values…
Motivated by the recent neutron scattering experiment on Rb2Cu3SnF12 [Nat. Phys. 6, 865 (2010)], we investigate the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a theoretical model for the magnetic structure of this material. Considering the valence bond solid ground state, which has a 12-site unit cell, we develop the bond operator mean-field theory. It is shown that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions significantly modify the triplon dispersions around the Gamma point and cause a shift of the spin gap (the minimum triplon gap) position from the K to Gamma point in the first Brilloin zo…
Recently much progress has been made in applying field theory methods, first developed to study X-ray edge singularities, to interacting one dimensional systems in order to include band curvature effects and study edge singularities at arbitrary momentum. Finding experimental confirmations of this theory remains an open challenge. Here we point out that spin chains with uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions provide an opportunity to test these theories since these interactions may be exactly eliminated by a gauge transformation which shifts the momentum. However, this requires an ext…
Superexchange calculation is performed for multi-orbital band models with broken inversion symmetry. Orbital-changing hopping terms allowed by the symmetry breaking electric field lead to a new kind of orbital exchange term closely resembling the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin exchange. The final superexchange Hamiltonian in two dimensions is expressed in terms of Gell-Mann matrices that break down as three spin operators and five nematic (quadrupole) order operators. Mean-field phase diagram exhibits a rich structure including anti-ferro-orbital, ferro-orbital, and both single and multiple spiral…
We study in this paper magnetic properties of a system of quantum Heisenberg spins interacting with each other via a ferromagnetic exchange interaction J and an in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction D. The non-collinear ground state due to the competition between J and D is determined. We employ a self-consistent Green'function theory to calculate the spin-wave spectrum and the layer magnetizations at finite T in two and three dimensions as well as in a thin film with surface effects. Analytical details and the validity of the method are shown and discussed.
We report a combined analytical and density matrix renormalized group study of the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain subject to a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and a transverse magnetic field. The numerically determined phase diagram of this model, which features two ordered Ising phases and a critical Luttinger liquid one with fully broken spin-rotational symmetry, agrees well with the predictions of Garate and Affleck [Phys. Rev. B 81, 144419 (2010)]. We also confirm the prevalence of the N z Néel Ising order in the regime of comparable DM and magnetic field ma…
We investigate the interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and an external field in spin 1/2 dimers. For isolated dimers and at low field, we derive simple expressions for the staggered and uniform magnetizations which show that the orientation of the uniform magnetization can deviate significantly from that of the external field. In fact, in the limit where the ${\bf D}$ vector of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is parallel to the external field, the uniform magnetization actually becomes {\it perpendicular} to the field. For larger fields, we show that the staggered magnetizati…
We study the magnetic properties of the two-dimensional anisotropic antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and in-plane frustration included. The method of spin Green functions within the framework of Tyablikov's random-phase-approximation decoupling scheme is used in order to derive expressions for the spin-wave spectrum, sublattice magnetization and transition temperature. Based on these expressions we perform a detailed analysis of the influence of varying values of model parameters on its magnetic properties. The model is also applied to the high…
Neutron diffraction is used to re-investigate the magnetic phase diagram of the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal antiferromagnet Ba2CuGe2O7. A novel incommensurate double-k magnetic phase is detected near the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition. This phase is stable only for magnetic field closely aligned with the 4-fold symmetry axis. The results emphasize the inadequacy of existing theoretical models for this unique material, and points to additional terms in the Hamiltonian or lattice effects.
Symmetry analysis of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in MnSi-type cubic crystals demonstrates that the magnetic moments are tilted periodically, producing a weak antiferromagnetic pattern, when the helix is unwound by magnetic field. The tilt angles of four Mn sublattices are determined by a component of the DM vector perpendicular to that one responsible for helical spiraling; both components have been evaluated using a simple model. It is shown that the tilting should induce pure magnetic reflections 00l, l=2n+1 in neutron or x-ray magnetic scattering, and the structure factors of…
We argue that the S=1/2 kagome antiferromagnet undergoes a quantum phase transition when the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling is increased. For $D<D_c$ the system is in a moment-free phase and for $D>D_c$ the system develops antiferromagnetic long-range order. The quantum critical point is found to be $D_c \simeq 0.1J$ using exact diagonalizations and finite-size scaling. This suggests that the kagome compound ZnCu$_3(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$ may be in a quantum critical region controlled by this fixed point.
We have investigated the ground state phase diagram of the 1D AF spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in an external uniform magnetic field $H$. We have used the exact diagonalization technique. In the absence of the uniform magnetic field (H=0), we have shown that the DM interaction induces a staggered chiral phase. The staggered chiral phase remains stable even in the presence of the uniform magnetic field. We have identified that the ground state phase diagram consists of four Luttinger liquid, staggered chiral, spin-flop, and ferromagnetic pha…
Ground state and spin-wave spectrum of cubic magnets with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) such as MnSi and FeGe are studied theoretically. The linear spin-wave theory is developed. The spin-wave spectrum depends strongly on the magnetic field and strongly anisotropic. It is a result of incommensurate magnetic structure when the DMI breaks the total spin conservation law. The spin-wave spectrum is unstable at infinitesimal perpendicular field. If the gap $Δ$ is introduced the spectrum becomes stable. The gap appears due to cubic anisotropy and the spin-wave interaction considered in…
We discuss the influence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the Heizenberg spin chain model for the observables in the polarized neutron scattering experiments. We show that different choices of the parameters of DM interaction may leave the spectrum of the problem unchanged, while the observable spin-spin correlation functions may differ qualitatively. Particularly, for the uniform DM interaction one has the incommensurate fluctuations and polarization-dependent neutron scattering in the paramagnetic phase. We sketch the possible generalization of our treatment to higher dimensi…
The electron spin resonance spectrum of a quasi 1D S=1/2 antiferromagnet K2CuSO4Br2 was found to demonstrate an energy gap and a doublet of resonance lines in a wide temperature range between the Curie--Weiss and Neèl temperatures. This type of magnetic resonance absorption corresponds well to the two-spinon continuum of excitations in S=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain with a uniform Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction between the magnetic ions. A resonance mode of paramagnetic defects demonstrating strongly anisotropic behavior due to interaction with spinon excitations in the main matrix is …
A systematic analysis is performed for quantum phase transitions in a bond-alternative one-dimensional Ising model with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction by using the fidelity of ground state wave functions based on the infinite matrix product states algorithm. For an antiferromagnetic phase, the fidelity per lattice site exhibits a bifurcation, which shows spontaneous symmetry breaking in the system. A critical DM interaction is inversely proportional to an alternating exchange coupling strength for a quantum phase transition. Further, a finite-entanglement scaling of von Neumann entro…
We report an observation of a commensurate-incommensurate phase transition in a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spiral magnet Ba_2CuGe_2O_7. The transition is induced by applying a magnetic field in the plane of spin rotation. In this experiment we have direct control over the strength of the commensurate potential, while the preferred incommensurate period of the spin system remains unchanged. Experimental results for the period of the soliton lattice and bulk magnetization as a function of external magnetic field are in quantitative agreement with theory.
We theoretically study magnetic and topological properties of antiferromagnetic kagome spin systems in the presence of both in- and out-of-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. In materials such as the iron jarosites, the in-plane interactions stabilize a canted noncollinear "umbrella" magnetic configuration with finite scalar spin chirality. We derive expressions for the canting angle, and use the resulting order as a starting point for a spin-wave analysis. We find topological magnon bands, characterized by non-zero Chern numbers. We calculate the magnon thermal Hall conductivity, and pr…
Non-local orders, entanglement entropy, and quantum fidelity are investigated in an infinite-size bond-alternating Ising chain with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction by employing the infinite matrix product state representation with the infinite time evolving block decimation method. Directly computing two distinct types of finite string correlations for very large lattice distances, in contrast to an extrapolated extreme value for finite size chains, reveals two topologically ordered phases. As the bond alternation varies, a topological quantum phase transition with continuously variable …
A preponderance of evidence suggests that the ground state of the nearest-neighbor $S = 1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice is a gapless spin liquid. Many candidate materials for the realization of this model possess in addition a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We study this system by tensor-network methods and deduce that a weak but finite DM interaction is required to destabilize the gapless spin-liquid state. The critical magnitude, $D_c/J \simeq 0.012(2)$, lies well below the DM strength proposed in the kagome material herbertsmithite, indicating a need t…
We investigate an antiferromagnetic spin-$1$ Heisenberg chain in the presence of Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) and an external magnetic field. We study the resulting spin chain using a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. Using DMRG simulations to determine the spectral gap and the entanglement spectrum, we map out the phase diagram as a function of magnetic field strength and DMI strength. We provide a qualitative interpretation for these numerical findings by mapping the spin-$1$ chain on a spin-$1/2$ ladder and using a bosonization approach.
We report on electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of the spin relaxation in Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. The main source of the ESR linewidth at temperatures $T \leq 150$ K is attributed to the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The vector components of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are determined from the angular dependence of the ESR spectra using a high-temperature approximation. Both the angular and temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth have been analyzed using a self-consistent quantum-mechanical approach. In addition analytical expressions based on a quasi-classical picture for…
In this paper the the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and anisotropy on the Entanglement of Heisenberg chain has been studied. While the anisotropy suppress the entanglement due to favoring of the alignment of spins, the DM interaction restores the spoiled entanglement via creation of the quantum fluctuations. Thermodynamic limit of the model and emerging of non-analytic behavior of the entanglement have also been probed. The singularities of the entanglement correspond to the critical boundary separating different phases of the model. The singularity of the entanglement derivative…
The one-dimensional (1D) isotropic frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 model is considered. Classical and quantum effects of adding a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction on the ground state of the system is studied using the analytical cluster method and numerical Lanczos technique. Cluster method results, show that the classical ground state magnetic phase diagram consists of only one single phase: "chiral". The quantum corrections are determined by means of the Lanczos method and a rich quantum phase diagram including the gapless Luttinger liquid, the gapped chiral and dimer orders is obtai…
Recently, there has been an increased interest in studying quantum entanglement and quantum coherence. Since both of these properties are attributed to the existence of quantum superposition, it would be useful to determine if some type of correlation between them exists. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to explore the type of the correlation in several systems with different types of anisotropy. The focus will be on the XY spin chains with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the type of the mentioned bond will be explored using the quantum renormalization group method.
