Probes that measure the local thermal properties of systems out of equilibrium are emerging as new tools in the study of nanoscale systems. One can then measure the temperature of a probe that is weakly coupled to a bias-driven system. By tuning the probe temperature so that the expectation value of some observable of the system is minimally perturbed, one obtains a parameter that measures its degree of local statistical excitation, and hence its local heating. However, one anticipates that different observables may lead to different temperatures and thus different local heating expectations. We propose an experimentally realizable protocol to measure such local temperatures and apply it to bias-driven quantum dots. By means of a highly accurate open quantum system approach, we show theoretically that the measured temperature is quite insensitive both to the choice of observable and to the probe-system coupling. In particular, even with observables that are distinct both physically and in their degree of locality, such as the local magnetic susceptibility of the quantum dot and the global spin-polarized current measured at the leads, the resulting local temperatures are quantitatively similar for quantum dots ranging from noninteracting to Kondo-correlated regimes, and are close to those obtained with the traditional "local equilibrium" definition.

In a recent work [L. Merker, S. Kirchner, E. Munoz, and T. A. Costi, Phys. Rev. B 87, 165132 (2013)], the authors compared results of numerical renormalization group and a perturbative approach for the dependence on temperature T and magnetic field B of the conductance through a quantum dot described by the impurity Anderson model, for small T and B. We show that the equation used to extract the dependence on B from NRG results is incorrect out of the particle-hole symmetric case. As a consequence, in the Kondo regime, the correct NRG results have a weaker dependence on B and the disagreement …
Signatures of the Kondo effect in the electrical conductance of strongly correlated quantum dots are well understood both experimentally and theoretically, while those in the thermopower have been the subject of recent interest. Here, we extend theoretical work [T. A. Costi, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 100}, 161106(R) (2019)] on the field-dependent thermopower of such systems, and carry out calculations in order to address a recent experiment on the field dependent thermoelectric response of Kondo-correlated quantum dots [A. Svilans {\em et al.,} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 121}, 206801 (2018)]. In addition t…
We explore correlated electron states in harmonically confined few-electron quantum dots in an external magnetic field by the path-integral Monte Carlo method for a wide range of the field and the Coulomb interaction strength. Using the phase structure of a preceding unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculation for phase fixing, we find a rich variety of correlated states, often completely different from the prediction of mean-field theory. These are finite temperature results, but sometimes the correlations saturate with decreasing temperature, providing insight into the ground-state properties.
Parafermionic zero modes, $\mathbb{Z}_n$-symmetric generalizations of the well-known $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Majorana zero modes, can emerge as edge states in topologically nontrivial strongly correlated systems displaying fractionalized excitations. In this paper, we investigate how signatures of parafermionic zero modes can be detected by its effects on the properties of a quantum dot tunnel-coupled to a system hosting such states. Concretely, we consider a strongly-correlated 1D fermionic model supporting $\mathbb{Z}_4$ parafermionic zero modes coupled to an interacting quantum dot at one of its end…
Using renormalized perturbation theory in the Coulomb repulsion, we derive an analytical expression for the leading term in the temperature dependence of the conductance through a quantum dot described by the impurity Anderson model, in terms of the renormalized parameters of the model. Taking these parameters from the literature, we compare the results with published ones calculated using the numerical renormalization group obtaining a very good agreement. The approach is superior to alternative perturbative treatments. We compare in particular to the results of a simple interpolative perturb…
Recent experiments have measured the signatures of the Kondo effect in the zero-field thermopower of strongly correlated quantum dots [Svilans {\em et al.,} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 121}, 206801 (2018); Dutta {\em et al.,} Nano Lett. {\bf 19}, 506 (2019)]. They confirm the predicted Kondo-induced sign change in the thermopower, upon increasing the temperature through a gate-voltage dependent value $T_{1}\gtrsim T_{\rm K}$, where $T_{\rm K}$ is the Kondo temperature. Here, we use the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method to investigate the effect of a finite magnetic field $B$ on the thermo…

[Phys. We investigate theorerically the non-equilibrium transport through a molecular quantum dot as a function of gate and bias voltage, taking into account the typical situation in molecular electronics. In this respect, our study includes asymmetries both in the capacitances and tunneling rates to the source and drain electrodes, as well as an infinitely large charging energy on the molecule. Our calculations are based on the out-of-equilibrium Non-Crossing-Approximation (NCA), which is a reliable technique in the regime under consideration. We find that Coulomb blockade edges and Kondo peaks disp…
We present the real-time renormalization group (RTRG) method as a method to describe the stationary state current through generic multi-level quantum dots with a complex setup in nonequilibrium. The employed approach consists of a very rudiment approximation for the RG equations which neglects all vertex corrections while it provides a means to compute the effective dot Liouvillian self-consistently. Being based on a weak-coupling expansion in the tunneling between dot and reservoirs, the RTRG approach turns out to reliably describe charge fluctuations in and out of equilibrium for arbitrary c…
