We analyze the equilibrium and non-equilibrium frequency-dependent spin current noise and spin conductance through a quantum dot in the local moment regime. Spin current correlations are shown to behave markedly differently from charge correlations: Equilibrium spin cross-correlations are suppressed at frequencies below the Kondo scale, and are characterized by a universal function that we determine numerically for zero temperature. For asymmetrical quantum dots dynamical spin accumulation resonance is found for frequencies of the order of the Kondo energy. At higher temperatures surprising low-frequency anomalies related to overall spin conservation appear.

The nonlinear conductance of semiconductor heterostructures and single molecule devices exhibiting Kondo physics has recently attracted attention. We address the observed sample dependence of the measured steady state transport coefficients by considering additional electronic contributions in the effective low-energy model underlying these experiments that are absent in particle-hole symmetric setups. A novel version of the superperturbation theory of Hafermann et al. in terms of dual fermions is developed, which correctly captures the low-temperature behavior. We compare our results with the…
We investigate the real-time current response of strongly-correlated quantum dot systems under sinusoidal driving voltages. By means of an accurate hierarchical equations of motion approach, we demonstrate the presence of prominent memory effects induced by the Kondo resonance on the real-time current response. These memory effects appear as distinctive hysteresis line shapes and self-crossing features in the dynamic current-voltage characteristics, with concomitant excitation of odd-number overtones. They emerge as a cooperative effect of quantum coherence - due to inductive behavior - and el…
In a recent work [L. Merker, S. Kirchner, E. Munoz, and T. A. Costi, Phys. Rev. B 87, 165132 (2013)], the authors compared results of numerical renormalization group and a perturbative approach for the dependence on temperature T and magnetic field B of the conductance through a quantum dot described by the impurity Anderson model, for small T and B. We show that the equation used to extract the dependence on B from NRG results is incorrect out of the particle-hole symmetric case. As a consequence, in the Kondo regime, the correct NRG results have a weaker dependence on B and the disagreement …
It is shown that the lesser and greater self energies and Green functions calculated in a recent work on universal noequilibrium transport in interacting quantum dots [E. Muñoz, C. J. Bolech, and S. Kirchner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 016601 (2013)] are incorrect. The authors start from renormalized second-order perturbation theory in the Coulomb repulsion in the particle-hole symmetric impurity Anderson model. The reported lesser self-energy is compared with the correct one, and with an analytic result valid for small frequency and applied voltage. As a consequence of the mistakes, the conservati…
Probes that measure the local thermal properties of systems out of equilibrium are emerging as new tools in the study of nanoscale systems. One can then measure the temperature of a probe that is weakly coupled to a bias-driven system. By tuning the probe temperature so that the expectation value of some observable of the system is minimally perturbed, one obtains a parameter that measures its degree of local statistical excitation, and hence its local heating. However, one anticipates that different observables may lead to different temperatures and thus different local heating expectations. …
We observe the low-lying excitations of a molecular dimer formed by two electrons in a GaAs semiconductor quantum dot in which the number of confined electrons is tuned by optical illumination. By employing inelastic light scattering we identify the inter-shell excitations in the one-electron regime and the distinct spin and charge modes in the interacting few-body configuration. In the case of two electrons a comparison with configuration-interaction calculations allows us to link the observed excitations with the breathing mode of the molecular dimer and to determine the singlet-triplet ener…
We propose correlated yet extremely simple single-parameter-dependent wave-functions with a Slater-type correlation factor, to describe excitons in 0D, quasi-1D and quasi-2D semiconductor quantum dots. We provide closed-form formulas for the wave-function normalization factor, electron/hole single-particle density and the expectation value of the kinetic energy. We additionally supply fast integration procedures for the Coulomb interaction in the presence of dielectric mismatch with the surrounding medium for nanoplatelets (quasi-2D systems), and for the bare-Coulomb integral in long nanorods …
Signatures of the Kondo effect in the electrical conductance of strongly correlated quantum dots are well understood both experimentally and theoretically, while those in the thermopower have been the subject of recent interest. Here, we extend theoretical work [T. A. Costi, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 100}, 161106(R) (2019)] on the field-dependent thermopower of such systems, and carry out calculations in order to address a recent experiment on the field dependent thermoelectric response of Kondo-correlated quantum dots [A. Svilans {\em et al.,} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 121}, 206801 (2018)]. In addition t…
I reply to the new arguments of Muñoz et al. (arXiv:1308.0638) regarding our controversy on non-equilibrium Green functions of the impurity Anderson model, and to new unfounded criticism to my paper Ref. 1 (arXiv:1110.0816). In particular, I show that the lesser self energy given in Ref. 1 does satisfy a Ward identity. References are updated.
We explore correlated electron states in harmonically confined few-electron quantum dots in an external magnetic field by the path-integral Monte Carlo method for a wide range of the field and the Coulomb interaction strength. Using the phase structure of a preceding unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculation for phase fixing, we find a rich variety of correlated states, often completely different from the prediction of mean-field theory. These are finite temperature results, but sometimes the correlations saturate with decreasing temperature, providing insight into the ground-state properties.
Time evolution of initially prepared entangled state in the system of coupled quantum dots has been analyzed by means of two different theoretical approaches: equations of motion for the all orders localized electron correlation functions, considering interference effects, and kinetic equations for the pseudo-particle occupation numbers with constraint on the possible physical states. Results obtained by means of different approaches were carefully analyzed and compared with each other. Revealed direct link between concurrence (degree of entanglement) and quantum dots pair correlation function…
We investigate the finite-frequency thermal transport through a quantum dot subject to strong interactions, by providing an exact, nonperturbative formalism that allows us to carry out a systematic analysis of the thermopower at any frequency. Special emphasis is put on the dc and high-frequency limits. We demonstrate that, in the Kondo regime, the ac thermopower is characterized by a universal function that we determine numerically.
We consider a quantum dot embedded in a three-dimensional nanowire with tunable aspect ratio a. A configuration interaction theory is developed to calculate the energy spectra of the finite 1D quantum dot systems charged with two electrons in the presence of magnetic fields B along the wire axis. Fruitful singlet-triplet transition behaviors are revealed and explained in terms of the competing exchange interaction, correlation interaction, and spin Zeeman energy. In the high aspect ratio regime, the singlet-triplet transitions are shown designable by tuning the parameters a and B. The transiti…
We study the spin ordering of a quantum dot defined via magnetic barriers in an interacting quantum spin Hall edge. The spin-resolved density-density correlation functions are computed. We show that strong electron interactions induce a ground state with a highly correlated spin pattern. The crossover from the liquid-type correlations at weak interactions to the ground state spin texture found at strong interactions parallels the formation of a one-dimensional Wigner molecule in an ordinary strongly interacting quantum dot.
We study correlated two-level quantum dots, coupled in effective 1-channel fashion to metallic leads; with electron interactions including on-level and inter-level Coulomb repulsions, as well as the inter-orbital Hund's rule exchange favoring the spin-1 state in the relevant sector of the free dot. For arbitrary dot occupancy, the underlying phases, quantum phase transitions (QPTs), thermodynamics, single-particle dynamics and electronic transport properties are considered; and direct comparison is made to conductance experiments on lateral quantum dots. Two distinct phases arise generically, …
Parafermionic zero modes, $\mathbb{Z}_n$-symmetric generalizations of the well-known $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Majorana zero modes, can emerge as edge states in topologically nontrivial strongly correlated systems displaying fractionalized excitations. In this paper, we investigate how signatures of parafermionic zero modes can be detected by its effects on the properties of a quantum dot tunnel-coupled to a system hosting such states. Concretely, we consider a strongly-correlated 1D fermionic model supporting $\mathbb{Z}_4$ parafermionic zero modes coupled to an interacting quantum dot at one of its end…
We study the transport properties of a serial double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to two superconducting leads, focusing on the Josephson current through the DQD and the associated 0-$π$ transitions which result from the subtle interplay between the superconductivity, the Kondo physics, and the inter-dot superexchange interaction. We examine the competition between the superconductivity and the Kondo physics by tuning the relative strength $Δ/T_K$ of the superconducting gap $Δ$ and the Kondo temperature $T_K$, for different strengths of the superexchange coupling determined by the interdot tunnel…
Recent experiments have measured the signatures of the Kondo effect in the zero-field thermopower of strongly correlated quantum dots [Svilans {\em et al.,} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 121}, 206801 (2018); Dutta {\em et al.,} Nano Lett. {\bf 19}, 506 (2019)]. They confirm the predicted Kondo-induced sign change in the thermopower, upon increasing the temperature through a gate-voltage dependent value $T_{1}\gtrsim T_{\rm K}$, where $T_{\rm K}$ is the Kondo temperature. Here, we use the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method to investigate the effect of a finite magnetic field $B$ on the thermo…
We investigate the effect of electronic correlations on the transmission phase of quantum coherent scatterers, considering quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime connected to two single-channel leads. We focus on transmission zeros and the associated π-phase lapses that have been observed in interferometric experiments. We numerically explore two types of models for quantum dots: (i) lattice models with up to eight sites, and (ii) resonant level models with up to six levels. We identify different regimes of parameters where the presence of electronic correlations is responsible for the in…
We explore the finite bias DC differential conductance of a correlated quantum dot under the influence of an AC field, from the low-temperature Kondo to the finite temperature Coulomb blockade regime. Real-time simulations are performed using a time-dependent generalization of the steady-state density functional theory (i-DFT) [Nano Lett. {\bf 15}, 8020 (2015)]. The numerical simplicity of i-DFT allows for unprecedented long time evolutions. Accurate values of average current and density are obtained by integrating over several periods of the AC field. We find that (i) the zero-temperature Kon…
Quantum tunneling dominates coherent transport at low temperatures in many systems of great interest. In this work we report a many--body tunneling (MBT), by nonperturbatively solving the Anderson multi-impurity model, and identify it a fundamental tunneling process on top of the well--acknowledged sequential tunneling and cotunneling. We show that the MBT involves the dynamics of doublons in strongly correlated systems. Proportional to the numbers of dynamical doublons, the MBT can dominate the off--resonant transport in the strongly correlated regime. A $T^{3/2}$--dependence of the MBT curre…
Quantum shot noise probes the dynamics of charge transfers through a quantum conductor, reflecting whether quasiparticles flow across the conductor in a steady stream, or in syncopated bursts. We have performed high-sensitivity shot noise measurements in a quantum dot obtained in a silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor. The quality of our device allows us to precisely associate the different transport regimes and their statistics with the internal state of the quantum dot. In particular, we report on large current fluctuations in the inelastic cotunneling regime, correspond…
The embedding method for the calculation of the conductance through interacting systems connected to single channel leads is generalized to obtain the full complex transmission amplitude that completely characterizes the effective scattering matrix of the system at the Fermi energy. We calculate the transmission amplitude as a function of the gate potential for simple diamond-shaped lattice models of quantum dots with nearest neighbor interactions. In our simple models we do not generally observe an interaction dependent change in the number of zeroes or phase lapses that depend only on the sy…
The low-lying eigenstates of a system of two electrons confined within a two-dimensional quantum dot with a hard polygonal boundary are obtained by means of exact diagonalization. The transition from a weakly correlated charge distribution for small dots to a strongly correlated "Wigner molecule" for large dots is studied, and the behaviour at the crossover is determined. In sufficiently large dots, a recently proposed mapping to an effective charge-spin model is investigated, and is found to produce the correct ordering of the energy levels and to give a good first approximation to the size o…
We investigate thermoelectric properties of correlated quantum dots and molecules, described by a single level Anderson model coupled to conduction electron leads, by using Wilson's numerical renormalization group method. In the Kondo regime, the thermopower, $S(T)$, exhibits two sign changes, at temperatures $T=T_{1}$ and $T=T_{2}>T_{1}$. We find that $T_{2}$ is of order the level width $Γ$ and $T_{1}> T_{p}\approx T_{K}$, where $T_{p}$ is the position of the Kondo induced peak in the thermopower and $T_{K}$ is the Kondo scale. No sign change is found outside the Kondo regime, or, for weak co…
We study the electric and thermoelectric transport properties of correlated quantum dots coupled to two ferromagnetic leads and one superconducting electrode. Transport through such hybrid devices depends on the interplay of ferromagnetic-contact induced exchange field, superconducting proximity effect and correlations leading to the Kondo effect. We consider the limit of large superconducting gap. The system can be then modeled by an effective Hamiltonian with a particle-non-conserving term describing the creation and annihilation of Cooper pairs. By means of the full density-matrix numerical…
We describe the theory of few Coulomb-correlated electrons in a magnetic quantum dot formed in graphene. While the corresponding nonrelativistic (Schrödinger) problem is well understood, a naive generalization to graphene's "relativistic" (Dirac-Weyl) spectrum encounters divergencies and is ill-defined. We employ Sucher's projection formalism to overcome these problems. Exact diagonalization results for the two-electron quantum dot, i.e., the artificial helium atom in graphene, are presented.
The interplay of confinement and Coulomb interactions in quantum dots can lead to strongly correlated phases differing qualitatively from the Fermi liquid behavior. We explore how the presence of magnetic impurities in quantum dots can provide additional opportunities to study correlation effects and the resulting ordering in carrier and impurity spin. By employing exact diagonalization we reveal that seemingly simple two-carrier quantum dots lead to a rich phase diagram. We propose experiments to verify our predictions, in particular we discuss interband optical transitions as a function of t…
In this article, we review recent work about time dependent quantum transport through a quantum dot in Kondo regime. This represents a major step towards designing next generation transistors that are expected to replace current MOSFET's in a few years. We first discuss the effects of the density of states of gold contacts on the instantaneous conductance of an asymmetrically coupled quantum dot that is abruptly moved into Kondo regime via a gate voltage. Next, we investigate the effect of strong electron-phonon coupling on the dot on the instantaneous conductance. Finally, we discuss thermoel…
Controlled adiabatic transfer of a single electron through a chain of quantum dots has been recently achieved in GaAs and Si/SiGe based quantum dots, opening prospects for turning stationary spin qubits into mobile ones, and solving in this way the problem of long-distance communication between quantum registers in a scalable quantum computing architecture based on quantum dots. We consider theoretically the process of such an electron transfer between two tunnel-coupled quantum dots, focusing on control by slowly varying the detuning of energy levels in the dots. We take into account the fluc…
