The growth of galaxies through adiabatic accretion of dark matter is one of the main drivers of galaxy evolution. By isolating it from other processes like mergers, we analyse how it affects the evolution of star clusters. Our study comprises a fast and approximate exploration of the orbital and intrinsic cluster parameter space, and more detailed monitoring of their evolution, through N-body simulations for a handful of cases. We find that the properties of present-day star clusters and their tidal tails differ very little, whether the clusters are embedded in a growing galactic halo for 12 Gyr, or in a static one.
Nuclear stellar clusters are common in the center of galaxies. We consider the possibility that their progenitors assumed to be globular clusters may have formed elsewhere, migrated to and assembled near their present location. The main challenge for this scenario is whether globular clusters can withstand the tidal field of their host galaxies. Our analysis suggests that provided the mass-density distribution of background potential is relatively shallow, as in some galaxies with relatively flat surface brightness profiles, the tidal field near the center of galaxies may be shown to be able t…
The major-axis density profiles of bars are known to be either exponential or 'flat'. We develop an automated non-parametric algorithm to detect flat profiles and apply it to a suite of simulations (with and without gas). We demonstrate that flat profiles are a manifestation of a bar's secular growth, producing a 'shoulder' region (an overdensity above an exponential) in its outskirts. Shoulders are not present when bars form, but develop as the bar grows. If the bar does not grow, shoulders do not form. Shoulders are often accompanied by box/peanut bulges, but develop separately from them and…

Average stellar orbits of the Galactic disk may have some small intrinsic ellipticity which breaks the exact axisymmetry and there may also be some migration of stars inwards or outwards. Both phenomena can be detected through kinematic analyses. We use the red clump stars selected spectroscopically from APOGEE (APO Galactic Evolution Experiment), with known distances and radial velocities, to measure the radial component of the Galactocentric velocities within 5 kpc$<R<$16 kpc, $|b|<5^\circ$ and within 20 degrees from the Sun-Galactic center line. The average Galactocentric radial velocity is…
In protoplanetary discs (PPDs) consisting of gas and dust particles, fluid instabilities induced by the drag force, including secular gravitational instability (SGI) can facilitate planet formation. Although SGI subject to the axisymmetric perturbations was originally studied in the absence of gas feedback and it then generalized using a two-fluid approach, the fate of the nonaxisymmetric SGI, in either case, is an unexplored problem. We present a linear perturbation analysis of the nonaxisymmetric SGI in a PPD by implementing a two-fluid model. We explore the growth of the local, nonaxisymmet…
The growth of black holes (BHs) in disk galaxies lacking classical bulges, which implies an absence of significant mergers, appears to be driven by secular processes. Short bars of sub-kiloparsec radius have been hypothesized to be an important mechanism for driving gas inflows to small scale, feeding central BHs. In order to quantify the maximum BH mass allowed by this mechanism, we examine the robustness of short bars to the dynamical influence of BHs. Large-scale bars are expected to be robust, long-lived structures; extremely massive BHs, which are rare, are needed to completely destroy su…
Stars passing too close to a super massive black hole (SMBH) can produce tidal disruption events (TDEs). Since the resulting stellar debris can produce an electromagnetic flare, TDEs are believed to probe the presence of single SMBHs in galactic nuclei, which otherwise remain dark. In this paper, we show how stars orbiting an IMBH secondary are perturbed by an SMBH primary. We find that the evolution of the stellar orbits are severely affected by the primary SMBH due to secular effects and stars orbiting with high inclinations with respect to the SMBH-IMBH orbital plane end their lives as TDEs…
Recent observations and simulations have revealed the dominance of secular processes over mergers in driving the growth of both supermassive black holes (SMBH) and galaxy evolution. Here we obtain narrowband imaging of AGN powered outflows in a sample of $12$ galaxies with disk-dominated morphologies, whose history is assumed to be merger-free. We detect outflows in $10/12$ sources in narrow band imaging of the [OIII] $5007 \unicode{x212B}$ emission using filters on the Shane-3m telescope. We calculate a mean outflow rate for these AGN of $0.95\pm0.14~\rm{M}_{\odot}~\rm{yr}^{-1}$. This exceeds…
There is a dense group of OB and Wolf-Rayet stars within a fraction of a parsec from the super-massive black hole (SMBH) at the Galactic Center. These stars appear to be coeval and relatively massive. A subgroup of these stars orbits on the same plane. If they emerged with low to modest eccentricity orbits from a common gaseous disk around the central super-massive black hole, their inferred lifespan would not be sufficiently long to account for the excitation of their high orbital eccentricity through dynamical relaxation. Here we analyze the secular perturbation on Galactic Center stars by a…
Spiral-driven instabilities may drive gas inflow to enhance central star formation in disk galaxies. We investigate this hypothesis using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in a sample of 2779 nearby unbarred star-forming main-sequence spiral galaxies. The strength of spiral arms is quantified by their average Fourier amplitude relative to the axisymmetric disk. The star formation properties in the central 1--3\,kpc region were derived from the SDSS spectra. We show that galaxies with stronger spiral arms not only tend to have more intense central specific star formation rate (sSFR), larger B…
We present a theoretical model for the evolution of mass, angular momentum and size of galaxy disks and bulges, and we implement it into the semi-analytic galaxy formation code SAGE. The model follows both secular and violent evolutionary channels, including smooth accretion, disk instabilities, minor and major mergers. We find that the combination of our recipe with hierarchical clustering produces two distinct populations of bulges: merger-driven bulges, akin to classical bulges and ellipticals, and instability-driven bulges, akin to secular (or pseudo-)bulges. The model mostly reproduces th…

There is a population of stars with velocities in excess of 500 km s$^{-1}$ relative to the Galactic center. Many, perhaps most, of these hyper-velocity stars (HVSs) are B stars, similar to the disk and S stars in a nuclear cluster around a super-massive black hole (SMBH) near $\rm Sgr~A^{\star}$. In the paper I of this series, we showed that the eccentricity of the stars emerged from a hypothetical disk around the SMBH can be rapidly excited by the secular perturbation of its intermediate-mass companion (IMC), and we suggested IRS 13E as a potential candidate for the IMC. Here, we show that t…
Recent large scale surveys of galactic bulge stars allowed to build a detailed map of the bulge kinematics. The bulge exhibits cylindrical rotation consistent with a disky origin which evolved through bar driven secular evolution. However correlations between metallicity and kinematics complicate this picture. In particular a metal-poor component with distinct kinematic signatures has been detected. Its origin, density profile and link with the other Milky Way stellar populations are currently still poorly constrained.
Orbital evolution of binary systems in dense stellar clusters is important in a variety of contexts: origin of blue stragglers, progenitors of compact object mergers, millisecond pulsars, and so on. Here we consider the general problem of secular evolution of the orbital elements of a binary system driven by the smooth tidal field of an axisymmetric stellar cluster (globular, nuclear, etc.) in which the binary orbits. We derive a secular Hamiltonian (averaged over both the inner Keplerian orbit of the binary and its outer orbit within the cluster) valid to quadrupole order for an arbitrary clu…
In galactic nuclei, the gravitational potential is dominated by the central supermassive black hole, so stars follow quasi-Keplerian orbits. These orbits are distorted by gravitational forces from other stars, leading to long-term orbital relaxation. The direct numerical study of these processes is challenging because the fast orbital motion imposed by the central black hole requires very small timesteps. An alternative approach, pioneered by Gauss, is to use the secular approximation of smearing out the $N$ stars over their Keplerian orbits, using $K$ nodes along each orbit. In this study we …
Based on well established scaling relation for star forming galaxies as a function of redshift, we argue that the implied growth by a large factor of their angular momentum requires that the angular momentum of the inflowing gas fuelling star formation and disk growth must also secularly increase. We then propose that star formation in disks can cease (quench) once the accreted material (mainly atomic hydrogen) comes in with excessive angular momentum for sustaining an adequate radial flow of cold, molecular gas. Existing observational evidence supporting this scenario is mentioned, together w…
Recent observations have found a 1700 km/s star [S5-HVS1] that was ejected from the Galactic Center approximately five million years ago. This star was likely produced by tidal disruption of a binary. In particular, the Galactic Center contains a few million year old stellar disk that could excite binaries to nearly radial orbits via a secular gravitational instability. Such binaries would be disrupted by the central supermassive black hole, and would also explain the observed cluster of B stars ~0.01 pc from the Galactic Center. In this paper we predict S5-HVS1 is part of a larger stream, and…
We present evidence of bar-induced secular evolution in galactic discs using 3.6 ${μm}$ images of nearby galaxies from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G). We find that among massive galaxies ($M_{star}/M_{sun}> 10^{10}$), longer bars tend to reside in inner discs having a flatter radial profile. Such galaxies show a light deficit in the disc surrounding the bar, within the bar radius and often show a $Θ$-shaped morphology. We quantify this deficit and find that among all galaxies explored in this study (with $10^{9}<M_{star}/M_{sun}< 10^{11}$), galaxies with a stronger b…
Secular and environmental effects play a significant role in regulating the star formation rate and hence the evolution of the galaxies. Since UV flux is a direct tracer of the star formation in galaxies, the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard ASTROSAT enables us to characterize the star forming regions in a galaxy with its remarkable spatial resolution. In this study, we focus on the secular evolution of NGC 628, a spiral galaxy in the local universe. We exploit the resolution of UVIT to resolve up to $\sim$ 63 pc in NGC 628 for identification and characterization of the star formin…
Understanding the processes that drive the formation of black holes (BHs) is a key topic in observational cosmology. While the observed $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$--$M_{\mathrm{Bulge}}$ correlation in bulge-dominated galaxies is thought to be produced by major mergers, the existence of a $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$--$M_{\star}$ relation, across all galaxy morphological types, suggests that BHs may be largely built by secular processes. Recent evidence that bulge-less galaxies, which are unlikely to have had significant mergers, are offset from the $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$--$M_{\mathrm{Bulge}}$ relation, but lie on the $…
The drift and diffusion coefficients of the inhomogeneous multi-mass degenerate Landau equation are computed to describe the self-induced resonant relaxation of a discrete self-gravitating quasi-Keplerian razor-thin axisymmetric disc orbiting a massive black hole while relying on Gauss' method. For a disc-like configuration in our Galactic centre, secular diffusion induces an adiabatic distortion of orbits. When considering a disc composed of multiple masses similarly distributed, the population of lighter stars will gain eccentricity, driving it closer to the central black hole provided the d…
The manifold theory of barred-spiral structure provides a dynamical mechanism explaining how spiral arms beyond the ends of galactic bars can be supported by chaotic flows extending beyond the bar's co-rotation zone. We discuss its applicability to N-body simulations of secularly evolving barred galaxies. In these simulations, we observe consecutive `incidents' of spiral activity, leading to a time-varying disc morphology. Besides disc self-excitations, we provide evidence of a newly noted excitation mechanism related to the `off-centering' effect: particles ejected in elongated orbits at majo…
We present near--infrared (NIR) imaging of FBQS J164442.5+261913, one of the few $γ$--ray emitting Narrow Line Seyfert 1 ($γ-$NLSy1) galaxies detected at high significance level by $Fermi$--LAT. This study is the first morphological analysis performed of this source and the third performed of this class of objects. Conducting a detailed two--dimensional modeling of its surface brightness distribution and analysing its $J-K_s$ colour gradients, we find that FBQS J164442.5+261913 is statistically most likely hosted by a barred lenticular galaxy (SB0). We find evidence that the bulge in the host …
Rotation of classical bulges during secular evolution of barred galaxies
We study the evolution of star clusters in the Galactic tidal field starting from their birth in molecular clumps. Our model clusters form according to the local-density-driven cluster formation model in which the stellar density profile is steeper than that of gas. As a result, clusters resist the gas expulsion better than predicted by earlier models. We vary the impact of the Galactic tidal field λ, considering different Galactocentric distances (3-18 kpc), as well as different cluster sizes. Our model clusters survive the gas expulsion independent of λ. We investigated the relation between …
We present the results of two-component (disc+bar) and three-component (disc+bar+bulge) multiwavelength 2D photometric decompositions of barred galaxies in five SDSS bands ($ugriz$). This sample of $\sim$3,500 nearby ($z<0.06$) galaxies with strong bars selected from the Galaxy Zoo citizen science project is the largest sample of barred galaxies to be studied using photometric decompositions which include a bar component. With detailed structural analysis we obtain physical quantities such as the bar- and bulge-to-total luminosity ratios, effective radii, Sérsic indices and colours of the indi…
We investigate the growth of bulges in bright ($M_B<-20$) disc galaxies since $z\sim1$, in rest-frame B and I-band, using images from HST ACS and WFC3 in GOODS-South for high redshifts ($0.4<z<1.0$) and SDSS for local ($0.02<z<0.05$). The growth history has been traced by performing two-component bulge-disc decomposition and further classifying the bulges into pseudos and classicals using Kormendy relation. We have about $27\%$ pseudo and $40\%$ classical bulges in our sample. Classical bulges are brighter than pseudo, in both rest-bands, at all redshifts probed here; in fact since $z\sim0.77$…
We quantify the inside-out growth of the Milky Way's low-alpha stellar disk, modelling the ages, metallicities and Galactocentric radii of APOGEE red clump stars with 6 < R < 13 kpc. The current stellar distribution differs significantly from that expected from the star formation history due to the redistribution of stars through radial orbit mixing. We propose and fit a global model for the Milky Way disk, specified by an inside-out star formation history, radial orbit mixing, and an empirical, parametric model for its chemical evolution. We account for the spatially complex survey selection …
How elliptical galaxies form is a key question in observational cosmology. While the formation of massive ellipticals is strongly linked to mergers, the low mass (Mstar < 10^9.5 MSun) regime remains less well explored. In particular, studying elliptical populations when they are blue, and therefore rapidly building stellar mass, offers strong constraints on their formation. Here, we study 108 blue, low-mass ellipticals (which have a median stellar mass of 10^8.7 MSun) at z < 0.3 in the COSMOS field. Visual inspection of extremely deep optical HSC images indicates that less than 3 per cent of t…

We extend our previous work on the age-chemical abundance structure of the Galactic outer disc to the inner disc (4 < r < 8 kpc) based on the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Different from the outer disc, the inner disc stars exhibit a clear bimodal distribution in the [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane. While a number of scenarios have been proposed in the literature, it remains challenging to recover this bimodal distribution with theoretical models. To this end, we present a chemical evolution model embedding a complex multi-phase inner disc formation scenario that matches the observed bimodal [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] distrib…
