Recently, a new eigenvalue problem, called the transmission eigenvalue problem, has attracted many researchers. The problem arose in inverse scattering theory for inhomogeneous media and has important applications in a variety of inverse problems for target identification and nondestructive testing. The problem is numerically challenging because it is non-selfadjoint and nonlinear. In this paper, we propose a recursive integral method for computing transmission eigenvalues from a finite element discretization of the continuous problem. The method, which overcomes some difficulties of existing methods, is based on eigenprojectors of compact operators. It is self-correcting, can separate nearby eigenvalues, and does not require an initial approximation based on some a priori spectral information. These features make the method well suited for the transmission eigenvalue problem whose spectrum is complicated. Numerical examples show that the method is effective and robust.
The transmission eigenvalue problem arising from the inverse scattering theory is of great importance in the theory of qualitative methods and in the practical applications. In this paper, we study the transmission eigenvalue problem for anisotropic inhomogeneous media in $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$,(d=2,3). Using the T-coercivity and the spectral approximation theory, we derive an a posteriori estimator of residual type and prove its effectiveness and reliability for eigenfunctions. In addition, we also prove the reliability of the estimator for transmission eigenvalues. The numerical experiments…
The paper presents a finite element scheme for the elastic transmission eigenvalue problem written as a fourth order eigenvalue problem. The scheme uses piecewise cubic polynomials and obtains optimal convergence rate. Compared with other low-degree and nonconforming finite element schemes, the scheme inherits the continuous bilinear form which does not need extra stabilizations and is thus simple to implement.
A stabilized version of the fundamental solution method to catch ill-conditioning effects is investigated with focus on the computation of complex-valued elastic interior transmission eigenvalues in two dimensions for homogeneous and isotropic media without voids. Its algorithm can be implemented very shortly and adopts to many similar PDE-based eigenproblems as long as the underlying fundamental solution function can be easily generated. We develop a corroborative approximation analysis which also implicates new basic results for transmission eigenfunctions and present some numerical examples…
The transmission eigenvalue problem arises from the inverse scattering theory for inhomogeneous media and has important applications in many qualitative methods. The problem is posted as a system of two second order partial differential equations and is essentially nonlinear, non-selfadjoint, and of higher order. It is nontrivial to develop effective numerical methods and the proof of convergence is challenging. In this paper, we formulate the transmission eigenvalue problem for anisotropic media as an eigenvalue problem of a holomorphic Fredholm operator function of index zero. The Lagrange f…

In this paper, we consider a cubic $H^2$ nonconforming finite element scheme $B_{h0}^3$ which does not correspond to a locally defined finite element with Ciarlet$'$s triple but admit a set of local basis functions. For the first time, we deduce and write out the expression of basis functions explicitly. Distinguished from the most nonconforming finite element methods, $(δΔ_h\cdot,Δ_h\cdot)$ with non-constant coefficient $δ>0$ is coercive on the nonconforming $B_{h0}^3$ space which makes it robust for numerical discretization. For fourth order eigenvalue problem, the $B_{h0}^3$ scheme can prov…

This paper is devoted to the computation of transmission eigenvalues in the inverse acoustic scattering theory. This problem is first reformulated as a two by two boundary system of boundary integral equations. Next, utilizing the Schur complement technique, we develop a Schur complement operator with regularization to obtain a reduced system of boundary integral equations. The Nyström discretization is then used to obtain an eigenvalue problem for a matrix. We employ the recursive integral method for the numerical computation of the matrix eigenvalue. Numerical results show that the proposed …
In this paper, we present a Spectral-Galerkin Method to approximate the zero-index transmission eigenvalues with a conductive boundary condition. This is a new eigenvalue problem derived from the scalar inverse scattering problem for an isotropic media with a conductive boundary condition. In our analysis, we will consider the equivalent fourth-order eigenvalue problem where we establish the convergence when the approximation space is the span of finitely many Dirichlet eigenfunctions for the Laplacian. We establish the convergence rate of the spectral approximation by appealing to Weyl's law.…
