A stabilized version of the fundamental solution method to catch ill-conditioning effects is investigated with focus on the computation of complex-valued elastic interior transmission eigenvalues in two dimensions for homogeneous and isotropic media without voids. Its algorithm can be implemented very shortly and adopts to many similar PDE-based eigenproblems as long as the underlying fundamental solution function can be easily generated. We develop a corroborative approximation analysis which also implicates new basic results for transmission eigenfunctions and present some numerical examples which together prove successful feasibility of our eigenvalue recovery approach.
In this paper, we consider numerical solutions of a time domain acoustic-elastic wave interaction problem which occurs between a bounded penetrable elastic body and a compressible inviscid fluid. It is also called the fluid-solid interaction problem. Firstly, an artificial boundary is introduced to transform the original transmission problem into a problem in a bounded region, and then its well-posed results are presented. We then employ a symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the solution of the reduced interaction problem consisting of second-order wave equations. A pr…
An hp-version interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (IPDG) method under nonconforming meshes is proposed to solve the quad-curl eigenvalue problem. We prove well-posedness of the numerical scheme for the quad-curl equation and then derive an error estimate in a mesh-dependent norm, which is optimal with respect to h but has different p-version error bounds under conforming and nonconforming tetrahedron meshes. The hp-version discrete compactness of the DG space is established for the convergence proof. The performance of the method is demonstrated by numerical experiments using conforming/no…
The paper presents a finite element scheme for the elastic transmission eigenvalue problem written as a fourth order eigenvalue problem. The scheme uses piecewise cubic polynomials and obtains optimal convergence rate. Compared with other low-degree and nonconforming finite element schemes, the scheme inherits the continuous bilinear form which does not need extra stabilizations and is thus simple to implement.
In this paper, we extend the work of Brenner and Sung [Math. Comp. 59, 321--338 (1992)] and present a regularity estimate for the elastic equations in concave domains. Based on the regularity estimate we prove that the constants in the error estimates of the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element approximations for the elastic equations/eigenvalue problem are independent of the Lame constant, which means the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element approximations are locking-free. We also establish two kinds of two-grid discretization schemes for the elastic eigenvalue problem and analyze that w…
In this paper, a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method of Nitsche's version for the Steklov eigenvalue problem in linear elasticity is presented. The a priori error estimates are analyzed under a low regularity condition, and the robustness with respect to nearly incompressible materials (locking-free) is proven. Furthermore, some numerical experiments are reported to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

In this paper we study Steklov eigenvalues for the Lamé operator which arise in the theory of linear elasticity. In this eigenproblem the spectral parameter appears in a Robin boundary condition, linking the traction and the displacement. To establish the existence of a countable spectrum for this problem, we present an extension of Korn's inequality. We also show that a proposed conforming Galerkin scheme provides convergent approximations to the true eigenvalues. A standard finite element method is used to conduct numerical experiments on 2D and 3D domains to support our theoretical findings…
We study Chebyshev filter diagonalization as a tool for the computation of many interior eigenvalues of very large sparse symmetric matrices. In this technique the subspace projection onto the target space of wanted eigenvectors is approximated with filter polynomials obtained from Chebyshev expansions of window functions. After the discussion of the conceptual foundations of Chebyshev filter diagonalization we analyze the impact of the choice of the damping kernel, search space size, and filter polynomial degree on the computational accuracy and effort, before we describe the necessary steps …

In this paper we present general-purpose preconditioners for regularized augmented systems arising from optimization problems, and their corresponding normal equations. We discuss positive definite preconditioners, suitable for CG and MINRES. We consider "sparsifications" which avoid situations in which eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix may become complex. Special attention is given to systems arising from the application of regularized interior point methods to linear or nonlinear convex programming problems.
This paper reports a theoretical and numerical framework to model nonlinear waves in elastic-plastic solids. Formulated in the Eulerian frame, the governing equations employed include the continuity equation, the momentum equation, and an elastic-plastic constitutive relation. The complete governing equations are a set of first-order, fully coupled partial differential equations with source terms. The primary unknowns are velocities and deviatoric stresses. By casting the governing equations into a vector-matrix form, we derive the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix to show the wave speeds. Th…
Recently, there has been interest in high-precision approximations of the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on spherical triangles for combinatorial purposes. We compute improved and certified enclosures to these eigenvalues. This is achieved by applying the method of particular solutions in high precision, the enclosure being obtained by a combination of interval arithmetic and Taylor models. The index of the eigenvalue is certified by exploiting the monotonicity of the eigenvalue with respect to the domain. The classically troublesome case of singular corners is handled by co…
