We introduce and develop a class of \textit{Cantor-winning} sets that share the same amenable properties as the classical winning sets associated to Schmidt's $(α,β)$-game: these include maximal Hausdorff dimension, invariance under countable intersections with other Cantor-winning sets and invariance under bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms. It is then demonstrated that a wide variety of badly approximable sets appearing naturally in the theory of Diophantine approximation fit nicely into our framework. As applications of this phenomenon we answer several previously open questions, including some related to the Mixed Littlewood conjecture and the $\times2, \times3$ problem.
In \cite{SchmidtGames}, W. Schmidt proved that the set of non-normal numbers in base $b$ is a {\it winning set}. We generalize this result by proving that many sets of non-normal numbers with respect to the Cantor series expansion are winning sets. As an immediate consequence, these sets will be shown to have full Hausdorff dimension.
In a recent paper, Baker and Kong have studied the Hausdorff dimension of the intersection of Cantor sets with their translations. We extend their results to more general Cantor sets. The proofs rely on the frequencies of digits in unique expansions in non-integer bases. In relation with this, we introduce a practical method to determine the frequency of any given finite block in Thue--Morse type sequences.
Following in the footsteps of P. Erdős and A. Rényi we compute the Hausdorff dimension of sets of numbers whose digits with respect to their $Q$-Cantor series expansions satisfy various statistical properties. In particular, we consider difference sets associated with various notions of normality and sets of numbers with a prescribed range of digits.
Three types of Cantor sets are studied. For any integer $m\ge 4$, we show that every real number in $[0,k]$ is the sum of at most $k$ $m$-th powers of elements in the Cantor ternary set $C$ for some positive integer $k$, and the smallest such $k$ is $2^m$.Moreover, we generalize this result to middle-$\frac 1α$ Cantor set for $1<α<2+\sqrt{5}$ and $m$ sufficiently large. For the naturally embedded image $W$ of the Cantor dust $C\times C$ into the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$, we prove that for any integer $m\ge 3$, every element in the closed unit disk in $\mathbb C$ can be written as the sum of at…
This text is a slightly expanded version of a survey article on certain aspects of low dimensional dynamics and number theory written after a kind invitation by the editors of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.
Let p be a prime number. The p-adic case of the Mixed Littlewood Conjecture states that liminf_{q \to \infty} q . |q|_p . ||q x|| = 0 for all real numbers x. We show that with the additional factor of log q.loglog q the statement is false. Indeed, our main result implies that the set of x for which liminf_{q\to\infty} q . log q . loglog q. |q|_p . ||qx|| > 0 is of full dimension. The result is obtained as an application of a general framework for Cantor sets developed in this paper.
We give an example of irrational vector $\pmbθ \in \mathbb{R}^2$ such that the set $Bad_{\pmbθ} := \{(η_1,η_2): \inf_{x\in\mathbb{N}} x^{\frac{1}{2}} \max_{i=1,2} \|x θ_i-η_i\|>0\}$ is not absolutely winning with respect to McMullen's game.
We establish various new results on a problem proposed by K. Mahler in 1984 concerning rational approximation to fractal sets by rational numbers inside and outside the set in question, respectively. Some of them provide a natural continuation and improvement of recent results of Broderick, Fishman and Reich and Fishman and Simmons. A key feature is that many of our new results apply to more general, multi-dimensional fractal sets and require only mild assumptions on the iterated function system. Moreover we provide a non-trivial lower bound for the distance of a rational number $p/q$ outside …
Let $γ\in(0;\frac{1}{2}),τ\geq 1$ and define the "$γ,τ$ Diophantine set" as: $$D_{γ,τ}:=\{α\in (0;1): ||qα||\geq\fracγ{q^τ}\quad\forall q\in\Bbb{N}\},\qquad||x||:=\inf_{p\in\Bbb{Z}}|x-p|. $$ In this paper we study the topology of these sets and we show that, for large $τ$ and for almost all $γ>0$, $D_{γ,τ}$ is a Cantor set.
In 1984, Kurt Mahler posed the following fundamental question: How well can irrationals in the Cantor set be approximated by rationals in the Cantor set? Towards development of such a theory, we prove a Dirichlet-type theorem for this intrinsic diophantine approximation on Cantor-like sets, and discuss related possible theorems/conjectures. The resulting approximation function is analogous to that for R^d, but with d being the Hausdorff dimension of the set, and logarithmic dependence on the denominator instead.
We prove that these Cantor sets are made up of transcendental numbers, apart from their endpoints $0$ and $1$, under some arithmetical assumptions on the data. To that purpose, we establish a criterion of linear independence over the field of algebraic numbers for the three numbers $1$, a characteristic Sturmian number, and an arbitrary Sturmian number with the same slope.
Let $m\in\mathbb N_{\ge 2}$, and let $\mathcal K=\{K_λ: λ\in(0, 1/m]\}$ be a class of Cantor sets, where $K_λ=\{\sum_{i=1}^\infty d_iλ^i: d_i\in\{0,1,\ldots, m-1\}, i\ge 1\}$. We investigate in this paper the likelyhood of a fixed point in the Cantor sets of $\mathcal K$. More precisely, for a fixed point $x\in(0,1)$ we consider the parameter set $Λ(x)=\{λ\in(0,1/m]: x\in K_λ\}$, and show that $Λ(x)$ is a topological Cantor set having zero Lebesgue measure and full Hausdorff dimension. Furthermore, by constructing a sequence of Cantor subsets with large thickness in $Λ(x)$ we prove that the in…
Let $C$ be the middle-third Cantor set. Define $C*C=\{x*y:x,y\in C\}$, where $*=+,-,\cdot,÷$ (when $*=÷$, we assume $y\neq0$). Steinhaus \cite{HS} proved in 1917 that \[ C-C=[-1,1], C+C=[0,2]. \] In 2019, Athreya, Reznick and Tyson \cite{Tyson} proved that \[ C÷C=\bigcup_{n=-\infty}^{\infty}\left[ 3^{-n}\dfrac{2}{3},3^{-n}\dfrac {3}{2}\right] . \] In this paper, we give a description of the topological structure and Lebesgue measure of $C\cdot C$. We indeed obtain corresponding results on the uniform $λ$-Cantor sets.
Let $K$ denote the middle third Cantor set and ${\cal A}:= \{3^n : n = 0,1,2, >... \} $. Given a real, positive function $ψ$ let $ W_{\cal A}(ψ)$ denote the set of real numbers $x$ in the unit interval for which there exist infinitely many $(p,q) \in \Z \times {\cal A} $ such that $ |x - p/q| < ψ(q) $. The analogue of the Hausdorff measure version of the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture is established for $ W_{\cal A}(ψ) \cap K $. One of the consequences of this is that there exist very well approximable numbers, other than Liouville numbers, in $K$ -- an assertion attributed to K. Mahler.
Motivated by a question of Erdős, this paper considers questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the 3-adic integers given by multiplication by 2. Let the 3-adic Cantor set consist of all 3-adic integers whose expansions use only the digits 0 and 1. The exception set is the set of 3-adic integers whose forward orbits under this action intersects the 3-adic Cantor set infinitely many times. It has been shown that this set has Hausdorff dimension 0. Approaches to upper bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets leads to study of intersections of multiplicative translates of Can…
