We calculate for the first time the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the $^6$Li nucleus within the alpha + p + n three-body cluster model using the Gaussian expansion method, assuming the one meson exchange P, CP-odd nuclear forces. It is found that the EDM of the $^6$Li is 2 times more sensitive on the isovector pion exchange P, CP-odd nuclear force than the deuteron EDM, due to the CP-odd interaction between the nucleons and the alpha cluster. The $^9$Be EDM is also calculated in the same framework as an alpha + alpha + n three-body system. We also test the ab initio calculation of the EDM of the deuteron, $^3$H and $^3$He nuclei using the realistic Argonne $v18$ nuclear force. In the ab initio calculations, good agreements with previous studies are obtained. We finally discuss the prospects for the new physics beyond the standard model.
Electric dipole moments of diamagnetic atoms of experimental interest are calculated using the relativistic Hartree-Fock and random-phase approximation methods, the many-body perturbation theory and configuration interaction technique. We consider P,T-odd interactions which give rise to atomic electric dipole moment in the second order of the perturbation theory. These include nuclear Schiff moment, P,T-odd electron-nucleon interaction and electron electric dipole moment. Interpretation of a new experimental constraint of a permanent electric dipole moment of $^{199}$Hg [W. C. Griffith {\it et…
We calculate the effect of the P, CP-odd electron-nucleon interaction on the electric dipole moment of the $^{199}$Hg atom by evaluating the nuclear spin matrix elements in terms of the nuclear shell model. It is found that the neutron spin matrix element of the $^{199}$Hg nucleus is $\langle Ψ|\, σ_{nz} | Ψ\rangle \approx -0.4$ with a dominant configuration of $p_{1/2}$ orbital neutron. We also derive constraints on the CP phases of Higgs-doublet models, supersymmetric models, and leptoquark models from the latest experimental limit $|d_{\rm Hg}| < 7.4 \times 10^{-30}e$ cm.
The electric dipole moments (EDMs) of neutron-odd nuclei with even protons are systematically evaluated. We first derive the relation between the EDM and the magnetic moment operators by making use of the core polarization scheme. This relation enables us to calculate the EDM of neutron-odd nuclei without any free parameters. From this calculation, one may find the best atomic system suitable for future EDM experiments.
The nuclear physics relevant to the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron is addressed. The general operator structure of the $P$- and $T$-odd nucleon-nucleon interaction is discussed and applied to the two-body contributions of the deuteron EDM, which can be calculated in terms of $P$- and $T$-odd meson-nucleon coupling constants with only small model dependence. The one-body contributions, the EDMs of the proton and the neutron, are evaluated within the same framework. Although the total theoretical uncertainties are sizable, we conclude that, compared to the neutron, the deuteron EDM…
Sum rules for the total- and scissors-mode M1 strength in odd-A nuclei are derived within the single-j interacting boson-fermion model. We discuss the physical content and geometric interpretation of these sum rules and apply them to ^{167}Er and ^{161}Dy. We find consistency with the former measurements but not with the latter.
We calculate for the first time the electric dipole moment (EDM) of $^{13}$C generated by the isovector CP-odd pion exchange nuclear force in the $α$-cluster model, which describes well the structures of low lying states of the $^{13}$C nucleus. The linear dependence of the EDM of $^{13}$C on the neutron EDM and the isovector CP-odd nuclear coupling is found to be $d_{^{13}{\rm C}} = -0.33 d_n - 0.0020 \bar G_π^{(1)}$. The linear enhancement factor of the CP-odd nuclear coupling is smaller than that of the deuteron, due to the difference of the structure between the $1/2^-_1$ state and the opp…
We describe the finite volume effects of CP-odd quantities, such as the neutron electric dipole moment and the anapole moment in the $θ$-vacuum, under different topological sectors. We evaluate the three-point Green's functions for the electromagnetic current in a fixed non-trivial topological sector in order to extract these CP-odd observables. We discuss the role of zero modes in the CP-odd Green's function and show that, in the quenched approximation, there is a power divergence in the quark mass for CP-odd quantities at finite volume.
Magnetic dipole strength functions have been deduced from averages of a large number of $M1$ transition strengths calculated within the shell model for the nuclides $^{90}$Zr, $^{94}$Mo, $^{95}$Mo, and $^{96}$Mo. An enhancement of $M1$ strength toward low transition energy has been found for all nuclides considered. Large $M1$ strengths appear for transitions between close-lying states with configurations including proton as well as neutron high-$j$ orbits that re-couple their spins and add up their magnetic moments coherently. The $M1$ strength function deduced from the calculated $M1$ transi…
We evaluate the contribution of the CP violating gluon chromo-electric dipole moment (the so-called Weinberg operator, denoted as $w$) to the electric dipole moment (EDM) of nucleons in the nonrelativistic quark model. The CP-odd interquark potential is modeled by the perturbative one-loop level gluon exchange generated by the Weinberg operator with massive quarks and gluons. The nucleon EDM is obtained by solving the nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation of the three-quark system using the Gaussian expansion method. It is found that the resulting nucleon EDM, which may reasonably be considered…
Effects caused by the electron electric dipole moment (EDM) in gadolinium garnets are considered. Experimental studies of these effects could improve current upper limit on the electron EDM by several orders of magnitude. We suggest a consistent theoretical model and perform calculations of observable effects in gadolinium gallium garnet and gadolinium iron garnet. Our calculation accounts for both direct and exchange diagrams.
We construct the relationship between nonrenormalizable, effective, time-reversal violating (TV) parity-conserving (PC) interactions of quarks and gauge bosons and various low-energy TVPC and TV parity-violating (PV) observables. Using effective field theory methods, we delineate the scenarious under which experimental limits on permanent electric dipole moments (EDM's) of the electron, neutron, and neutral atoms as well as limits on TVPC observables provide the most stringent bounds on new TVPC interactions. Under scenarios in which parity invariance is restored at short distances, the one-loo…
The nuclear shell model assumes an effective mean-field plus interaction Hamiltonian in a specific configuration space. We want to understand how various interaction matrix elements affect the observables, the collectivity in nuclei and the nuclear level density for odd-A and odd-odd nuclei. Using the sd and pf shells, we vary specific groups of matrix elements and study the evolution of energy levels, transition rates and the level density. In all cases studied, a transition between a "normal" and a collective phase is induced, accompanied by an enhancement of the level density in the collect…
There have been recent suggestions for searching for the electron electric dipole moment, using solid state experiments with compounds containing Gd 3+ ions. These experiments could improve the sensitivity compared to present atomic and molecular experiments by several orders of magnitude. The analysis of the problem requires a calculation of the enhancement coefficient K for the electron electric dipole moment in the Gd 3+ ion. In this work we perform this calculation. The result is K = -4.9 +- 1.6. Limitations of the accuracy of the calculation are mainly due to the lack of data on Gd 3+ exc…
Approximate analytical formulas for the self-consistent renormalization of P,T-odd and P-odd weak nuclear potentials by the residual nucleon-nucleon strong interaction are derived. The contact spin-flip nucleon-nucleon interaction reduces the constant of the P,T-odd potential 1.5 times for the proton and 1.8 times for the neutron. Renormalization of the P-odd potential is caused by the velocity dependent spin-flip component of the strong interaction. In the standard variant of $π+ ρ$-exchange, the conventional strength values lead to anomalous enhancement of the P-odd potential. Moreover, the …
We study the off-shell mixing and renormalization of flavor-diagonal dimension-5 T- and P-odd operators involving quarks, gluons, and photons, including quark electric dipole and chromo-electric dipole operators. We present the renormalization matrix to one-loop in the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme. We also provide a definition of the quark chromo-electric dipole operator in a regularization-independent momentum-subtraction scheme suitable for non-perturbative lattice calculations and present the matching coefficients with the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme to one-loop in perturbation theory, using both the na…

The hyperfine coupling constants of the proton dripline odd-odd $^{40}$Sc nucleus were deduced from the hyperfine spectrum of the $3d4s\,^3\text{D}_2$\,$\leftrightarrow$\,$3d4p\,^3\text{F}^\circ_3$ transition in Sc II, measured by the bunched beam collinear laser spectroscopy technique. The ground state magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments were determined for the first time as $μ$\,=\,$+5.57(4)(2)\,μ_N$ and $Q$\,=\,$+42(38)(28)\,e^2\;{\rm fm^2}$, respectively. The magnetic moment is well reproduced by the additivity rule with magnetic moments of neighboring odd-even nuclei in the vi…
It is shown that odd harmonic azimuthal correlations, including the directed flow $v_1$, in forward two-particle production in peripheral proton-nucleus ($pA$) collisions can arise simply from the radial nuclear profile of a large nucleus. This requires consideration of the C-odd part of the gluonic generalized transverse momentum dependent (GTMD) correlator of nucleons in the nucleus. The gluonic GTMD correlator is the Fourier transform of an off-forward hadronic matrix element containing gluonic field strength tensors that are connected by gauge links. It is parametrized in terms of various …
In the supersymmetric models, the dominant sources of the hadronic flavor-diagonal CP violation at low energy are the theta term and the chromoelectric dipole moments of quarks. Using QCD sum rules, we estimate the preferred range and the best values for the CP-odd meson-nucleon coupling constants induced by these operators. When the theta term is removed by the axion mechanism, the size of the most important isospin triplet pion-nucleon coupling is estimated to be \bar g_{πNN}^{(1)} = 2 times 10^{-12}(tilde d_u - tilde d_d), where chromoelectric dipole moments are given in units of 10^{-26} c…
The isovector time-reversal- and parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling $\bar{g}_π^{(1)}$ is uniquely sensitive to dimension six interactions between right-handed light quarks and the Standard Model Higgs doublet that naturally arises in left-right symmetric models. Recent work has used the $\bar{g}_π^{(1)}$-induced one-loop contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment $d_n$, together with the present experimental $d_n$ bound, to constrain the CP-violating parameters of the left-right symmetric model. We show that this and related analyses are based on an earlier meson theory $d_n$ compu…
The nucleon sigma term of the isoscalar and isovector quark chromo-magnetic dipole moments are essential inputs for the determination of the CP-odd pion-nucleon couplings induced by quark chromo-electric dipole moments. We demonstrate that the former can be mapped to the third moment of the nucleon twist-three chiral-odd distribution functions $e^q(x)$ which are in principle measurable in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes. We perform a survey on existing model calculations as well as experimental data on $e^u(x)+e^d(x)$ and derive a predicted range for the isoscalar chromo-mag…
We report the calculation of the isovector CP-odd $πN$ interaction generated by the Weinberg operator, the CP violating three-gluon operator. This enables to restrict models which induce the operator by using experimental data of atomic electric dipole moment. The QCD sum rules are used to determine the matrix element required to assess the CP-odd $πN$ interactions. The relation between the Weinberg operator and the Hg and Xe EDMs is clarified, and the constraint on the Weinberg operator is obtained using the experimental data for the Hg EDM.
Parity and time invariance violating ($P,T$-odd) atomic electric dipole moments (EDM) are induced by interaction between atomic electrons and nuclear $P,T$-odd moments which are produced by $P,T$-odd nuclear forces. The nuclear EDM is screened by atomic electrons. The EDM of a non-relativistic atom with closed electron subshells is induced by the nuclear Schiff moment. For heavy relativistic atoms EDM is induced by the nuclear local dipole moments which differ by 10-50% from the Schiff moments calculated previously. We calculate the local dipole moments for ${^{199}{\rm Hg}}$ and ${^{205}{\rm …
Triggered by experimental prospects to measure electromagnetic dipole moments of baryons containing a bottom quark, we calculate the CP-odd electric dipole moments (EDMs) of spin-1/2 single-bottom baryons. We consider CP-violating dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory that involve bottom quarks, and apply heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to compute the EDMs of several baryons. We discuss the expected size of the EDMs for beyond-the-Standard Model physics appearing at the TeV scale.
We present a model which describes the properties of odd-even nuclei with one nucleon more, or less, with respect to the magic number. In addition to the effects related to the unpaired nucleon, we consider those produced by the excitation of the closed shell core. By using a single particle basis generated with Hartree-Fock calculations, we describe the polarization of the doubly magic-core with Random Phase Approximation collective wave functions. In every step of the calculation, and for all the nuclei considered, we use the same finite-range nucleon-nucleon interaction. We apply our model …
The contribution of the CP violating three-gluon Weinberg operator, $\frac{1}{3!} w f^{abc} ε^{νραβ} G^a_{μν} G^b_{αβ} G^{c μ}_ρ$, to the atomic and nuclear EDMs is estimated using QCD sum rules. After calculating the transition matrix element between the pion and the vacuum through the Weinberg operator, we obtain the long-range CP-odd nuclear force by determining the isovector CP-odd pion-nucleon vertex, using chiral perturbation theory at NLO. The EDMs of $^{199}$Hg, $^{129}$Xe, $^{225}$Ra, $^2$H, and $^3$He are finally given including comprehensive uncertainty analysis. While the leading c…
We define a regularization-independent momentum-subtraction scheme for the $CP$-odd three-gluon operator at dimension six. This operator appears in effective field theories for heavy physics beyond the Standard Model, describing the indirect effect of new sources of $CP$-violation at low energies. In a hadronic context, it induces permanent electric dipole moments. The hadronic matrix elements of the three-gluon operator are non-perturbative objects that should ideally be evaluated with lattice QCD. We define a non-perturbative renormalization scheme that can be implemented on the lattice and …
We calculate for the first time the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron, $^3$H, and $^3$He nuclei generated by the one-meson exchange CP-odd nuclear force in the standard model. The effective $|ΔS| = 1$ four-quark operators are matched to the $|ΔS| = 1$ standard model processes involving the CP phase of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix at the electroweak scale and run down to the hadronic scale $μ= 1$ GeV according to the renormalization group evolution in the next-to-leading logarithmic order. At the hadronic scale, the hadron matrix elements are modeled in the factorization appr…
We have calculated the atomic electric dipole moments (EDMs) induced in ^{199}Hg, ^{129}Xe, ^{223}Rn, ^{225}Ra, and ^{239}Pu by their respective nuclear Schiff moments S. The results are (in units 10^{-17}S(e {fm}^{3})^{-1}e cm): d(^{199}Hg)=-2.8, d(^{129}Xe)=0.38, d(^{223}Rn)=3.3, d(^{225}Ra)=-8.5, d(^{239}Pu)=-11. We have also calculated corrections to the parity- and time-invariance-violating (P,T-odd) spin-axis interaction constant in TlF. These results are important for the interpretation of atomic and molecular experiments on EDMs in terms of fundamental P,T-odd parameters.
Nuclear forces violating parity and time reversal invariance P,T-odd produce P,T-odd nuclear moments, for example, the nuclear Schiff moment. In turn, this moment can induce the electric dipole moment (EDM) in the atom. The contribution to the Schiff moment from the soft collective quadrupole and octupole vibrations in spherical nuclei is calculated in the framework of the quasiparticle random phase approximation with separable quadrupole and octupole forces. The values of nuclear Schiff moments predicted for odd 217-221Ra and 217-221Ra isotopes indicate a possibility of enhancement by a facto…
Axions are introduced to explain the observed smallness of the $\bar θ$ term of QCD. Standard Model extensions typically contain new sources of CP violation, for instance to account for the baryon asymmetry of the universe. In the presence of additional CP-violating sources a Peccei-Quinn mechanism does not remove all CP violation, leading to CP-odd interactions among axions and Standard Model fields. In this work, we use effective field theory to parametrize generic sources of beyond-the-Standard-Model CP violation. We systematically compute the resulting CP-odd couplings of axions to leptons…
The multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) method was employed to calculate atomic electric dipole moments (EDM) of the superheavy element copernicium (Cn, $Z=112$). The EDM enhancement factors of Cn, here calculated for the first time, are about one order of magnitude larger than those of Hg. The exponential dependence of enhancement factors on atomic number $Z$ along group 12 of the periodic table was derived from the EDMs of the entire homolog series, $^{69}_{30}$Zn, $^{111}_{\phantom{1}48}$Cd, $^{199}_{\phantom{1}80}$Hg, $^{285}_{112}$Cn, and $^{482}_{162}$Uhb. These results show th…
We examine the time-reversal-violating nuclear ``Schiff moment'' that induces electric dipole moments in atoms. After presenting a self-contained derivation of the form of the Schiff operator, we show that the distribution of Schiff strength, an important ingredient in the ground-state Schiff moment, is very different from the electric-dipole-strength distribution, with the Schiff moment receiving no strength from the giant dipole resonance in the Goldhaber-Teller model. We then present shell-model calculations in light nuclei that confirm the negligible role of the dipole resonance and show t…
We construct a three-dimensional analytically soluble model of the nonlinear effects in Coulomb excitation of multiphonon Giant Dipole Resonances (GDR) based on the SU(2,1) algebra. The full 3-dimensional model predicts further enhancement of the Double GDR (DGDR) cross sections at high bombarding energies. Enhancement factors for DGDR measured in thirteen different processes with various projectiles and targets at different bombarding energies are well reproduced with the same value of the nonlinearity parameter with the exception of the anomalous case of $^{136}$Xe which requires a larger va…
The nuclear electric dipole moment is a very sensitive probe of CP violation beyond the standard model, and for light nuclei, it can be evaluated accurately using few-body calculational methods. In this talk, we present the deuteron, $^3$He, $^3$H, $^6$Li, and $^9$Be electric dipole moments calculated using the Gaussian expansion method with a realistic nuclear force, and assuming the one-meson exchange model for the P, CP-odd nuclear force. We then give future prospects for models beyond the standard model such as the supersymmetry.
We use the nuclear density functional theory to determine nuclear electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments in all one-particle and one-hole neighbours of eight doubly magic nuclei. We align angular momenta along the intrinsic axial-symmetry axis with broken time-reversal symmetry, which allows us to explore fully the self-consistent charge, spin, and current polarisation. Spectroscopic moments are determined for symmetry-restored wave functions and compared with available experimental data. We find that the obtained polarisations do not call for using quadrupole- or dipole-moment operat…
Parity and time invariance violating (${\cal P},{\cal T}$-odd) nuclear forces produce ${\cal P},{\cal T}$-odd nuclear moments, for example, the nuclear Schiff moment. In turn, this moment can induce electric dipole moments (EDMs) in atoms. We estimate the contribution to the Schiff moment from the soft collective octupole vibrations existing in many heavy nuclei. Two possible mechanisms are considered, mixing of the ground state of an odd-$A$ nucleus with the octupole phonon state, and ${\cal P},{\cal T}$-odd admixture to the single-particle wave function of the valence nucleon. We found pract…
We carry out a feasibility study for the lattice QCD calculation of the neutron electric dipole moment (NEDM) in the presence of the $θ$ term. We develop the strategy to obtain the nucleon EDM from the CP-odd electromagnetic form factor $F_3$ at small $θ$, in which NEDM is given by $\lim_{q^2\to 0}θF_3(q^2)/(2m_N)$ where $q$ is the momentum transfer and $m_N$ is the nucleon mass. We first derive a formula which relates $F_3$, a matrix element of the electromagnetic current between nucleon states, with vacuum expectation values of nucleons and/or the current. In the expansion of $θ$, the parity…
The basic parameters for calculations of radiative neutron capture , photon strength functions and nuclear level densities near the neutron separation energy are determined based on experimental data without an ad-hoc assumption about axial symmetry - at variance to previous analysis. Surprisingly few global fit parameters are needed in addition to information on nuclear deformation, taken from Hartree Fock Bogolyubov (HFB) calculations with the Gogny force, and the generator coordinator method (GCM) assures properly defined angular momentum. For a large number of nuclei the GDR shapes and the…
Upper limits on the electric dipole moments (EDM) of elementary particles and atoms are presented, and their physical implications are discussed. The bounds following from the neutron and atomic experiments are comparable. In particular, they strongly constrain P odd, T even interactions. The nuclear EDMs can be studied at ion storage rings, with the expected sensitivity much better than $10^{-24} e$ cm. It would be a serious progress in the studies of the CP violation.
Parity and time-reversal violating electric dipole moment (EDM) of $^{171}$Yb is calculated accounting for the electron correlation effects over the Dirac-Hartree-Fock (DHF) method in the relativistic Rayleigh-Schrödinger many-body perturbation theory, with the second (MBPT(2) method) and third order (MBPT(3) method) approximations, and two variants of all-order relativistic many-body approaches, in the random phase approximation (RPA) and coupled-cluster (CC) method with singles and doubles (CCSD method) framework. We consider electron-nucleus tensor-pseudotensor (T-PT) and nuclear Schiff mom…
It is demonstrated that the TaN molecule is the best candidate to search for T,P-violating nuclear magnetic quadrupole moment (MQM), it also looks promising to search for other T,P-odd effects. We report results of coupled-cluster calculations of T,P-odd effects in TaN produced by the Ta nucleus MQM, electron electric dipole moment (EDM), scalar$-$pseudoscalar nucleus$-$electron interactions, also of the molecule-axis hyperfine structure constant and dipole moment. Nuclear calculations of $^{181}$Ta MQM are performed to express the T,P-odd effect in terms of the strength constants of T,P-odd n…
The parity (P) and time-reversal (T) odd coupling constant associated with the tensor-pseudotensor (T-PT) electron-nucleus interaction and the nuclear Schiff moment (NSM) have been determined by combining the result of the measurement of the electric dipole moment (EDM) of ^{129}Xe atom and calculations based on the relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) theory. Calculations using various relativistic many-body methods have been performed at different levels of approximation and their accuracies are estimated by comparing the results of the calculated dipole polarizability of the ground state of t…
We review the current status of the study of parity and time invariance violation in atoms, nuclei and molecules. We focus on parity non-conservation in cesium and three of the most promising areas of research: (i) parity non-conservation in a chain of isotopes, (ii) search for nuclear anapole moments, and (iii) search for permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of atoms and molecules, which in turn are caused by either an electron EDM or nuclear $T,P$-odd moments such as a nuclear EDM or nuclear Schiff moment.
The Schiff theorem is revisited in this work and the residual $P$- and $T$-odd electron--nucleus interaction, after the shielding takes effect, is completely specified. An application is made to the electric dipole moments of hydrogen-like atoms, whose qualitative features and systematics have important implication for realistic paramagnetic atoms.
The existence of a nuclear electric octupole moment (EOM) requires both parity and time invariance violation. The EOMs of odd $Z$ nuclei that are induced by a particular T- and P-odd interaction are calculated. We compare such octupole moments with the collective EOMs that can occur in nuclei having a static octupole deformation. A nuclear EOM can induce a parity and time invariance violating atomic electric dipole moment, and the magnitude of this effect is calculated. The contribution of a nuclear EOM to such a dipole moment is found, in most cases, to be smaller than that of other mechanism…
We study the interplay between the isoscalar (T=0) and isovector (T=1) pairing correlations in N=Z odd-odd nuclei from 14N to 58Cu by using three-body model calculations. The strong spin-triplet T=0 pairing correlation dominates in the ground state of 14N, 18F, 30P, and 58Cu with the spin-parity J^π=1+, which can be well reproduced by the present calculations. The magnetic dipole and Gamow-Teller transitions are found to be strong in 18F and 42Sc as a manifestation of SU(4) symmetry in the spin-isospin space. We also discuss the spin-quadrupole transitions in these nuclei.
We discuss the nuclear anapole moment, a new P odd, T even electromagnetic multipole. Its discovery in the cesium experiment gives a first-rate information on parity-nonconserving nuclear forces. New prospects in the field are considered. Upper limits on the electric dipole moments, which are P odd, T odd multipoles, of elementary particles and atoms are presented, and their physical implications discussed. The atomic experiments are demonstrated to be as informative in this respect as the neutron ones. Tremendous progress in the field can be expected from experiments at ion storage rings and …
The discovery of the atomic electric dipole moment (EDM) would reveal the simultaneous violation of parity (P) and time-reversal (T) invariance. The EDM can be induced by T-odd forces between the nucleus and atomic electrons. As the nuclear dipole moment is screened according to the Schiff theorem, the appropriate nuclear operator is the Schiff moment that may exist in nuclei under PT-violation. We briefly review the current experimental situation and discuss more in detail the ideas concerning possible collective mechanisms for the enhancement of the nuclear Schiff moment. The most promising …
