We evaluate the contribution of the CP violating gluon chromo-electric dipole moment (the so-called Weinberg operator, denoted as $w$) to the electric dipole moment (EDM) of nucleons in the nonrelativistic quark model. The CP-odd interquark potential is modeled by the perturbative one-loop level gluon exchange generated by the Weinberg operator with massive quarks and gluons. The nucleon EDM is obtained by solving the nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation of the three-quark system using the Gaussian expansion method. It is found that the resulting nucleon EDM, which may reasonably be considered as the irreducible contribution, is smaller than the one obtained after $γ_5$-rotating the anomalous magnetic moment using the CP-odd mass calculated with QCD sum rules. We estimate the total contribution to be $d_n = w \times 20 \, e \, {\rm MeV}$ and $d_p = - w \times 18 \, e \, {\rm MeV}$ with 60% of theoretical uncertainty.
Weinberg's contributions to the power counting and derivation of few-nucleon forces in Chiral EFT are briefly recalled. Subsequent improvements are reviewed, concluding with the recent suggestion of a combinatorial enhancement.
The CP violating Weinberg operator (or the gluon chromo-electric dipole moment) is generated in many candidates of new physics beyond the standard model, and it contributes to observables such as the electric dipole moments (EDM) of the neutron, nuclei and atoms. In this proceedings contribution, we review the present understanding of the Weinberg operator as well as the result of the estimation of its effect to the EDM of $^3$He nucleus through the contact CP-odd nuclear force.
The Weinberg operator (chromo-electric dipole moment of gluon) is a CP violating quantity generated in many candidates of new physics beyond the standard model, and it contributes to observables such as the electric dipole moments (EDM) of the neutron or atoms which are currently measured in experiments. In this proceedings contribution, we report on our result of the evaluation of the Weinberg operator contribution to the nucleon EDM in the nonrelativistic quark model using the Gaussian expansion method.
We perform a comprehensive Weinberg eigenvalue analysis of a representative set of modern nucleon-nucleon interactions derived within chiral effective field theory. Our set contains local, semilocal, and nonlocal potentials, developed by Gezerlis, Tews et al. (2013); Epelbaum, Krebs, and Meißner (2015); and Entem, Machleidt, and Nosyk (2017) as well as Carlsson, Ekström et al. (2016), respectively. The attractive eigenvalues show a very similar behavior for all investigated interactions, whereas the magnitudes of the repulsive eigenvalues sensitively depend on the details of the regularization…
We propose a new, renormalizable approach to nucleon-nucleon scattering in chiral effective field theory based on the manifestly Lorentz invariant form of the effective Lagrangian without employing the heavy-baryon expansion. For the pion-less case and for the formulation based on perturbative pions, the new approach reproduces the known results obtained by Kaplan, Savage and Wise. Contrary to the standard formulation utilizing the heavy-baryon expansion, the nonperturbatively resummed one-pion exchange potential can be renormalized by absorbing all ultraviolet divergences into the leading S-w…
We report the calculation of the isovector CP-odd $πN$ interaction generated by the Weinberg operator, the CP violating three-gluon operator. This enables to restrict models which induce the operator by using experimental data of atomic electric dipole moment. The QCD sum rules are used to determine the matrix element required to assess the CP-odd $πN$ interactions. The relation between the Weinberg operator and the Hg and Xe EDMs is clarified, and the constraint on the Weinberg operator is obtained using the experimental data for the Hg EDM.
The contribution of the CP violating three-gluon Weinberg operator, $\frac{1}{3!} w f^{abc} ε^{νραβ} G^a_{μν} G^b_{αβ} G^{c μ}_ρ$, to the atomic and nuclear EDMs is estimated using QCD sum rules. After calculating the transition matrix element between the pion and the vacuum through the Weinberg operator, we obtain the long-range CP-odd nuclear force by determining the isovector CP-odd pion-nucleon vertex, using chiral perturbation theory at NLO. The EDMs of $^{199}$Hg, $^{129}$Xe, $^{225}$Ra, $^2$H, and $^3$He are finally given including comprehensive uncertainty analysis. While the leading c…
We calculate the nucleon matrix element of Weinberg's dimension-6 CP-odd gluon operator $f^{abc} (\tilde F_{μν})^a (F^{μρ})^b (F^ν_{\;\;ρ})^c$ in the instanton vacuum. In leading order of the instanton packing fraction, the dimension-6 operator is effectively proportional to the topological charge density $(\tilde F_{μν})^a (F^{μν})^a$, whose nucleon matrix element is given by the flavor-singlet axial charge and constrained by the $U(1)_A$ anomaly. The nucleon matrix element of the dimension-6 operator is obtained substantially larger than in other estimates, because of the strong localization…
This paper is a brief review of low energy soft hadronic physics, starting from the invention of the low energy effective range theory in the late 40's due to Bethe and Schwinger for nucleon-nucleon scattering, and its generalization to the static Chew-Low model for pion nucleon scattering, to the present development of the Lehmann and Weinberg Chiral Perturbation Theories. It is pointed out that a consistent low energy calculation can be achieved with the incorporation of the unitarity relation in the Chiral Perturbation Theory.
The contribution of the CP violating three-gluon interaction, proposed by Weinberg, to the short-range CP-odd nuclear force is evaluated in the nonrelativistic quark model. We first show that the naive leading contribution generated by the quark exchange process vanishes at sufficiently short distance within the resonating group method, by considering the one-loop level gluon exchange CP-odd interquark potential induced by the Weinberg operator with massive quarks and gluons. We then estimate the true leading contribution by evaluating the gluonic correction to the CP-odd interquark potential …
We re-examine questions concerning the contribution of the three-gluon Weinberg operator to the electric dipole moment of the neutron, and provide several QCD sum rule-based arguments that the result is smaller than - but nevertheless consistent with - estimates which invoke naive dimensional analysis. We also point out a regime of the MSSM parameter space with light gluinos for which this operator provides the dominant contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment due to enhancement via the dimension five color electric dipole moment of the gluino.
The electric dipole moments of the nucleon and light ions are discussed and strategies for disentangling the underlying sources of CP violation beyond the Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing mechanism of the Standard Model are indicated. Contribution to "45 years of nuclear theory at Stony Brook: a tribute to Gerald E. Brown".
The pion-nucleon and kaon-nucleon scattering lengths are studied in the QCD sum rule. We show that the leading and next-to-leading order terms of the OPE give rise to the Tomozawa-Weinberg and sigma terms, respectively. We also show that in the kaon-nucleon system the $Λ(1405)$ contribution has to be subtracted from the OPE side in order to obtain the scattering length. The odd components of the $T$-matrices are in agreement with the experimental values not only in the pion-nucleon channel but also in the kaon-nucleon channel after the $Λ(1405)$ contribution subtracted. The even components dis…
Dimension eight operators of the Weinberg type have been shown to give important contributions to CP violating phenomena, such as the electric dipole moment of the neutron. In this note we show how operators related to these (and expected to occur on equal footing) can give rise to time-reversal violating phenomena such as atomic electric dipole moments. We also estimate the induced parity violating phenomena such as small ``wrong'' parity admixtures in atomic states and find that they are negligible. A recently completed next-to-leading-order program to calculate neutrino cross sections, including power-suppressed mass correction terms, has been applied to evaluate the Paschos-Wolfenstein relation, in order to quantitatively assess the validity and significance of the NuTeV anomaly. In particular, we study the shift of $\sin^2 θ_{\mathrm{W}}$ obtained in calculations with a new generation of PDF sets that allow $s(x)\neq \bar{s}(x)$, enabled by recent neutrino dimuon data from CCFR and NuTeV, as compared to the previous $s = \bar{s}$ parton distribution functions like CTEQ6M. The extracted…
We construct multisphaleron solutions in the Weinberg-Salam theory. The multisphaleron solutions carry Chern-Simons charge $n/2$, where $n$ is an integer, counting the winding of the fields in the azimuthal angle. The well-known sphaleron has $n=1$. The multisphalerons possess axial symmetry and parity reflection symmetry. We vary the Higgs mass and the mixing angle. For small $n$ the energies of the multisphalerons are on the order of $n$ times the energy of the sphaleron and their magnetic dipole moments are on the order of $n$ times the magnetic dipole moment of the sphaleron.
In a previous paper \cite{Hatta:2020ltd}, we have pointed out the connection between the $CP$-odd three-gluon (Weinberg) operator and certain twist-four corrections in polarized deep inelastic scattering. Based on this observation, we give a numerical estimate of the electric dipole moment of the proton and neutron induced by the Weinberg operator. Our result is smaller than the previous estimates based on QCD sum rules by a factor of about 3 or more.
In this work, we study the renormalization group invariance (RGI) of the recently proposed covariant power counting (PC) scheme in the case of nucleon-nucleon scattering [Chin.Phys. C42 (2018) 014103] at leading order (LO). We show that unlike the LO Weinberg case, RGI is satisfied in the $^3P_{0}$ channel, because a term of $pp'$ appears naturally in the covariant PC scheme at LO. Another interesting feature is that the $^1S_{0}$ and $^3P_{1}$ channels are correlated. Fixing the two relevant low energy constants by fitting to the $^1S_{0}$ phase shifts at $T_\mathrm{lab.}=10$ and $25$ MeV wit…
The electric dipole moments (EDMs) of electron and nucleons are promising probes of the new physics. In generic high-scale supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios such as models based on mixture of the anomaly and gauge mediations, gluino has an additional contribution to the nucleon EDMs. In this paper, we studied the effect of the $CP$-violating gluon Weinberg operator induced by the gluino chromoelectric dipole moment in the high-scale SUSY scenarios, and we evaluated the nucleon and electron EDMs in the scenarios. We found that in the generic high-scale SUSY models, the nucleon EDMs may receive th…
The electric dipole moments (EDMs) of nucleons are sensitive probes of additional $\cal CP$ violation sources beyond the standard model to account for the baryon number asymmetry of the universe. As a fundamental quantity of the nucleon structure, tensor charge is also a bridge that relates nucleon EDMs to quark EDMs. With a combination of nucleon EDM measurements and tensor charge extractions, we investigate the experimental constraint on quark EDMs, and its sensitivity to $\cal CP$ violation sources from new physics beyond the electroweak scale. We obtain the current limits on quark EDMs as …
I present an exact relationship between the electric dipole moment and anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon in the light-front formalism of QCD and consider its consequences.
We provide a consistent and complete calculation of the electric dipole moments of the deuteron, helion, and triton in the framework of chiral effective field theory. The CP-conserving and CP-violating interactions are treated on equal footing and we consider CP-violating one-, two-, and three-nucleon operators up to next-to-leading-order in the chiral power counting. In particular, we calculate for the first time EDM contributions induced by the CP-violating three-pion operator. We find that effects of CP-violating nucleon-nucleon contact interactions are larger than those found in previous s…
It is argued that Weinberg's approach to the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction problem within effective field theory provides a consistent power counting for renormalized diagrams. Within this scheme the NN potential is organized as an expansion in terms of small quantities like small external momenta and the pion mass (divided by the characteristic large scale of the effective theory). Physical observables to any given order in these small quantities are calculated from the solutions of the Lippmann-Schwinger (or Schr\" odinger) equation.
The electric dipole form factor of the nucleon stemming from the QCD $\barθ$ term is calculated in chiral perturbation theory in leading order. To this order, the form factor originates from the pion cloud. Its momentum-dependence is proportional to a non-derivative time-reversal-violating pion-nucleon coupling, and the scale for momentum variation--appearing, in particular, in the radius of the form factor--is the pion mass.
A partial screening of nucleon electric dipole moments (EDMs) in nuclear systems, which is related to the Schiff mechanism known for neutral atomic systems, is discussed. It is shown that the direct contribution from the neutron EDM to the deuteron EDM is partially screened by about 1% in a zero-range approximation calculation.
We calculate the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of three-nucleon systems at leading order in pionless effective field theory. The one-body contributions that arise from permanent proton and neutron EDMs and the two-body contributions that arise from CP-odd nucleon-nucleon interactions are taken into account. Neglecting the Coulomb interaction, we consider the triton and ${}^3$He, and also investigate them in the Wigner-SU(4) symmetric limit. We also calculate the electric dipole form factor and find numerically that the momentum dependence of the electric dipole form factor in the Wigner limit…
We calculate the electric dipole form factor of the nucleon that arises as a low-energy manifestation of time-reversal violation in quark-gluon interactions of effective dimension 6: the quark electric and chromoelectric dipole moments, and the gluon chromoelectric dipole moment. We use the framework of two-flavor chiral perturbation theory to one loop.

We introduce the strong CP-violation in the framework of AdS/QCD model and calculate the electric dipole moments of nucleons as well as the CP-violating pion-nucleon coupling. Our holographic estimate of the electric dipole moments gives for the neutron d_n=1.08 X 10^{-16} theta (e cm), which is comparable with previous estimates. We also predict that the electric dipole moment of the proton should be precisely the minus of the neutron electric dipole moment, thus leading to a new sum rule on the electric dipole moments of baryons.
We derive a Wilson coefficient of a CP-violating purely gluonic dimension-6 operator called the Weinberg operator ($GG\tilde{G}$) generated by a scalar and two fermions at the two-loop level. We do not specify the representation of SU(3)$_c$ for the scalar and the fermions, and thus our result can be applied to a variety of models beyond the standard model. We estimate the nucleon EDMs induced by the Weinberg operator in some examples and discuss the importance of measuring EDMs. It is found that future measurements of the EDMs can probe physics at higher energy scale beyond the reach of colli…
We perform the calculation of the nucleon dipole magnetic moment in full detail using the Gordon decomposition of the free quark current. This calculation has become necessary because of frequent misuse of the Gordon decomposition by some authors in computing the nucleon dipole magnetic moment.
We consider the electric dipole form factor, F_3(q^2), as well as the Dirac and Pauli form factors, F_1(q^2) and F_2(q^2), of the nucleon in the light-front formalism. We derive an exact formula for F_3(q^2) to complement those known for F_1(q^2) and F_2(q^2). We derive the light-front representation of the discrete symmetry transformations and show that time-reversal- and parity-odd effects are captured by phases in the light-front wave functions. We thus determine that the contributions to F_2(q^2) and F_3(q^2), Fock state by Fock state, are related, independent of the fundamental mechanism …
Electric dipole moments (EDMs) of nucleons and nuclei, which are sought as evidence of CP violation, require lattice calculations to connect constraints from experiments to limits on the strong CP violation within QCD or CP violation introduced by new physics from beyond the standard model. Nucleon EDM calculations on a lattice are notoriously hard due to large statistical noise, chiral symmetry violating effects, and potential mixing of the EDM and the anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon. In this report, details of ongoing lattice calculations of proton and neutron EDMs induced by the QC…
The electric dipole form factor (EDFF) of the nucleon stemming from the QCD theta term and from the quark color-electric dipole moments is calculated in chiral perturbation theory to sub-leading order. This is the lowest order in which the isoscalar EDFF receives a calculable, non-analytic contribution from the pion cloud. In the case of the theta term, the expected lower bound on the deuteron electric dipole moment is |d_d| > 1.4 10^(-4) θe fm. The momentum dependence of the isovector EDFF is proportional to a non-derivative time-reversal-violating pion-nucleon coupling, and the scale for mom…
We estimate the size of the hadronic matrix elements of CP-violating three-gluon and four-gluon Weinberg operators using sum-rule techniques. In the three-gluon case, we are able to reproduce the expressions given in earlier works, while the four-gluon results obtained in this article are new. Our paper therefore represents the first systematic study of contributions to the electric dipole moment of the neutron due to CP-violating dimension-six and dimension-eight operators. We provide many details on both the derivation of the sum rules as well as the analysis of the uncertainties that plague…
We calculate the effect of the P, CP-odd electron-nucleon interaction on the electric dipole moment of the $^{199}$Hg atom by evaluating the nuclear spin matrix elements in terms of the nuclear shell model. It is found that the neutron spin matrix element of the $^{199}$Hg nucleus is $\langle Ψ|\, σ_{nz} | Ψ\rangle \approx -0.4$ with a dominant configuration of $p_{1/2}$ orbital neutron. We also derive constraints on the CP phases of Higgs-doublet models, supersymmetric models, and leptoquark models from the latest experimental limit $|d_{\rm Hg}| < 7.4 \times 10^{-30}e$ cm.
The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix in the Standard Model is currently the only experimentally-confirmed source of CP-violation. The intrinsic electric dipole moment of the nucleon induced by this CP-phase via hadronic loop and pole diagrams has been studied more than two decades ago, but the existing calculation is subject to various theoretical issues such as the breakdown of chiral power counting and uncertainties in the determination of low energy constants. We carry out an up-to-date re-analysis on both one-loop and pole diagram contributions to the nucleon electric dipole moment based o…
We analyze isospin breaking through quark mass differences and virtual photons in the pion-nucleon scattering lengths in all physical channels in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. The so-called triangle relation is found to be violated by about 1.5 %. We encounter a substantial isospin-breaking correction to neutral-pion-nucleon scattering beyond Weinberg's prediction due to a cusp effect. Finally, the application to hadronic atoms is briefly discussed.
We present the contributions to electric dipole moments (EDMs) induced by the Yukawa couplings of an additional electroweak doublet of colour-octet scalars. The full set of one-loop diagrams and the enhanced higher-order effects from Barr-Zee diagrams are computed for the quark (chromo-)EDM, along with the two-loop contributions to the Weinberg operator. Using the stringent experimental upper limits on the neutron EDM, constraints on the parameter space of this model are derived.
Searches for the permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of molecules, atoms, nucleons and nuclei provide powerful probes of CP violation both within and beyond the Standard Model (BSM). The interpretation of experimental EDM limits requires careful delineation of physics at a wide range of distance scales, from the long-range atomic and molecular scales to the short-distance dynamics of physics at or beyond the Fermi scale. In this review, we provide a framework for disentangling contributions from physics at these disparate scales, building out from the set of dimension four and six effecti…
The measurement of the electric dipole moment (EDM) is an excellent test of the standard model of particle physics, and the detection of a finite value is signal of a new source of CP violation beyond it. Among systems for which the EDM can be measured, light nuclei are particularly interesting due to their high sensitivity to new physics. In this proceedings contribution, we examine the sensitivity of the EDM of several light nuclei to the CP-odd one pion-exchange nucleon-nucleon interaction within the cluster model. We suggest an approximate sum rule for the nuclear EDM.
The nuclear physics relevant to the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron is addressed. The general operator structure of the $P$- and $T$-odd nucleon-nucleon interaction is discussed and applied to the two-body contributions of the deuteron EDM, which can be calculated in terms of $P$- and $T$-odd meson-nucleon coupling constants with only small model dependence. The one-body contributions, the EDMs of the proton and the neutron, are evaluated within the same framework. Although the total theoretical uncertainties are sizable, we conclude that, compared to the neutron, the deuteron EDM…
We determine the diffractive scattering amplitude of a color-dipole on a nucleon using a non-perturbative model of QCD which contains only parameters taken from low-energy physics. This allows to relate specific features of the confinement mechanisms with diffractive electro-production processes and structure functions. The agreement with phenomenological data is satisfactory.

We briefly discuss the current status of lattice QCD simulations and review selective results on nucleon observables focusing on recent developments in the lattice QCD evaluation of the nucleon form factors and radii, parton distribution functions and their moments, and the neutron electric dipole moment. Nucleon charges and moments of parton distribution functions are presented using simulations generated at physical values of the quark masses, while exploratory studies are performed for the parton distribution functions and the neutron electric dipole moment at heavier than physical value of…
Electric dipole moments (EDMs), which are sought as evidence of CP violation, require lattice calculations to connect constraints from experiments to limits on the strong CP violation within QCD or CP violation in new physics beyond the standard model. Nucleon EDM calculations on a lattice are notoriously hard due to large statistical noise, chiral symmetry violating effects, and potential mixing of the EDM and the anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon. In this report, details of ongoing lattice calculations of proton and neutron EDMs induced by the QCD $θ$-term and the quark chromo-EDM, th…
We study the hard color dipole-nucleon cross section within perturbative QCD and discuss its relation to observables in diffractive leptoproduction of heavy quarkonium. The dipole cross section calculated with the unintegrated gluon density of the nucleon substantially differs from the well-known perturbative form $σ_{dip} \sim b^2$ for $b > 0.3$fm, where $b$ is the transverse separation of the dipole. We show the measured ratio of $ψ'$ to $J / ψ$ photoproduction cross sections constrains the dipole cross section at intermediate $b$, and in fact excludes the simple $σ_{dip} \sim b^2$ behavior.…
The isovector time-reversal- and parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling $\bar{g}_π^{(1)}$ is uniquely sensitive to dimension six interactions between right-handed light quarks and the Standard Model Higgs doublet that naturally arises in left-right symmetric models. Recent work has used the $\bar{g}_π^{(1)}$-induced one-loop contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment $d_n$, together with the present experimental $d_n$ bound, to constrain the CP-violating parameters of the left-right symmetric model. We show that this and related analyses are based on an earlier meson theory $d_n$ compu…
Electric dipole moments (EDMs) of nucleons and nuclei are actively considered as direct evidence of the CP violation. Calculations of nucleon EDMs on lattice are required to connect the quark- and hadron- level effective CP violating interactions within QCD or other CP violating sources in new physics beyond the standard model. Among them, the theta-induced nucleon EDM, that is the only such renormalizable interaction, has widely been investigated on a lattice. In the report, we review recent developments of the lattice calculations of nucleon EDM induced QCD theta term.
In the article "Limits on possible new nucleon monopole-dipole interactions from the spin relaxation rate of polarized $^3$He gas", new limits on short-range, Axion-like interactions are presented. In this comment it is shown that the theoretical treatement of the data overestimates the sensitivity of the proposed method. We provide the corrected limits.
Starting with the VMD parametrization of the electric and magnetic nucleon form factors, which are saturated just by the ground state vector-mesons rho, omega and phi, then aplying the strict OZI rule and the asymptotic behaviour of form factors as predicted by quark model of hadrons, the famous one parameter dipole formula is derived. By its comparison with space-like data up to t = -5 GeV^2 the most optimal value of the parameter under consideration is determined. Finaly, charge and magnetization distributions in proton and neutron are predicted.
Supersymmetric model contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment arise via quark electric dipole moment operators, whose matrix elements are usually calculated using the Naive Quark Model (NQM). However, experiments indicate that the NQM does not describe well the quark contributions $Δq$ to the nucleon spin, and so may provide misleading estimates of electric dipole operator matrix elements. Taking the $Δq$ from experiment, we indeed find consistently smaller estimates of the neutron electric dipole moment for given values of the supersymmetric model parameters. This weakens previous …
We apply a fully automated extension of the $R^*$-operation capable of calculating higher-loop anomalous dimensions of n-point Green's functions of arbitrary, possibly non-renormalisable, local Quantum Field Theories. We focus on the case of the CP-violating Weinberg operator of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory whose anomalous dimension is so far known only at one loop. We calculate the two-loop anomalous dimension in full QCD and the three-loop anomalous dimensions in the limit of pure Yang-Mills theory. We find sizeable two-loop and large three-loop corrections, due to the appearanc…
The nucleon sigma term of the isoscalar and isovector quark chromo-magnetic dipole moments are essential inputs for the determination of the CP-odd pion-nucleon couplings induced by quark chromo-electric dipole moments. We demonstrate that the former can be mapped to the third moment of the nucleon twist-three chiral-odd distribution functions $e^q(x)$ which are in principle measurable in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes. We perform a survey on existing model calculations as well as experimental data on $e^u(x)+e^d(x)$ and derive a predicted range for the isoscalar chromo-mag…
