Topologically ordered quantum systems have robust physical properties, such as quasiparticle statistics and ground-state degeneracy, which do not depend on the microscopic details of the Hamiltonian. We consider topological phase transitions under a deformation such as an effective string tension on a $\mathbb{Z}_3$ topological state. This is studied in terms of the gauge-symmetry preserved quantum state renormalization group, first proposed by He, Moradi and Wen [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 90}, 205114 (2014)]. In this approach modular matrices $S$ and $T$ can be obtained and used as order parameters to characterize the topological properties of the phase and determine phase transitions. From a mapping to a classical 2D Potts model on the square lattice, the critical string tension, at which the transition to a topologically trivial phase takes place, can be obtained analytically and agrees with the numerically determined value. Such a transition can be generalized to a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ topological model under a string tension and determined in the same way. With different deformations, the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ topological phase can also be driven to a critical phase which contains, in the large deformation limit, a point analogous to Rokhsar-Kivelson point in the quantum dimer model.
In topologically ordered quantum states of matter in 2+1D (space-time dimensions), the braiding statistics of anyonic quasiparticle excitations is a fundamental characterizing property which is directly related to global transformations of the ground-state wavefunctions on a torus (the modular transformations). On the other hand, there are theoretical descriptions of various topologically ordered states in 3+1D, which exhibit both point-like and loop-like excitations, but systematic understanding of the fundamental physical distinctions between phases, and how these distinctions are connected …
We study the fractionalization of space group symmetries in two-dimensional topologically ordered phases. Specifically, we focus on Z2-fractionalized phases in two dimensions whose deconfined topological excitations transform trivially under translational symmetries, but projectively under glide reflections, whose quantum numbers are hence fractionalized. We accomplish this by generalizing the dichotomy between even and odd gauge theories to incorporate additional symmetries inherent to non-symmorphic crystals. We show that the resulting fractionalization of point group quantum numbers can be …
We develop an exact map of all states and operators from 2D lattices of spins-$1/2$ into lattices of fermions and bosons with mutual semionic statistical interaction that goes beyond previous dualities of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories because it does not rely on imposing local conservation laws and captures the motion of ``charges'' and ``fluxes'' on equal footing. This map allows to explicitly compute the Berry phases for the transport of fluxes in a large class of symmetry enriched topologically ordered states with emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields that includes chiral, non-chiral…
A hallmark feature of topologically ordered states of matter is the dependence of ground state degeneracy (GSD) on the topology of the manifold determined by the global shape of the system. Although the topology of a physical system is practically hard to manipulate, recently it was shown that in certain topologically ordered phases, topological defects can introduce extra topological GSD. Here the topological defects can be viewed as effectively changing the topology of the physical system. Previous studies have been focusing on two spatial dimensions with point-like topological defects. In t…
A 3d electron topological insulator (ETI) is a phase of matter protected by particle-number conservation and time-reversal symmetry. It was previously believed that the surface of an ETI must be gapless unless one of these symmetries is broken. A well-known symmetry-preserving, gapless surface termination of an ETI supports an odd number of Dirac cones. In this paper we deduce a symmetry-respecting, gapped surface termination of an ETI, which carries an intrinsic 2d topological order, Moore-Read x anti-semion. The Moore-Read sector supports non-Abelian charge 1/4 anyons, while the Abelian, ant…
In this work, we consider 2D $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topologically ordered phases ($\mathbb{Z}_2$ toric code and the modified surface code) on a simple hyperbolic lattice. Introducing a 2D lattice consisting of the product of a 1D Cayley tree and a 1D conventional lattice, we investigate two topological quantities of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topologically ordered phases on this lattice: the ground state degeneracy on a closed surface and the topological entanglement entropy. We find that both quantities depend on the number of branches and the generation of the Cayley tree. We attribute these results to a hu…
We describe a mechanism by which fermions in topologically trivial bands can form correlated states exhibiting a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect upon introduction of strong repulsive interactions. These states are solid-liquid composites, in which a FQH liquid is induced by the formation of charge order (CO), following a recently proposed paradigm of symmetry-breaking topological (SBT) order [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 216404 (2014)]. We devise a spinless fermion model on a triangular lattice, featuring a topologically trivial phase when interactions are omitted. Adding strong short-range repu…
Topological orders are a class of exotic states of matter characterized by patterns of long-range entanglement. Certain topologically ordered systems are proposed as potential realization of fault-tolerant quantum computation. Topological orders can arise in two-dimensional spin-lattice models. In this paper, we engineer a time-dependent Hamiltonian to prepare a topologically ordered state through adiabatic evolution. The other sectors in the degenerate ground-state space of the model are obtained by applying nontrivial operations corresponding to closed string operators. Each sector is highly…
We study the Z2 topologically ordered surface state of three-dimensional bosonic SPT phases with the discrete symmetries G1 x G2. It has been argued that the topologically ordered surface state cannot be realized on a purely two-dimensional lattice model. We carefully examine the statement and show that the surface state should break G2 if the symmetry G1 is gauged. This manifests the conflict of the symmetry G1 and G2 on the surface of the three-dimensional SPT phase. Given that there is no such phenomena in the purely two-dimensional model, it signals that the symmetries are encoded anomalou…
We study the preparation of topologically ordered states by interpolating between an initial Hamiltonian with a unique product ground state and a Hamiltonian with a topologically degenerate ground state space. By simulating the dynamics for small systems, we numerically observe a certain stability of the prepared state as a function of the initial Hamiltonian. For small systems or long interpolation times, we argue that the resulting state can be identified by computing suitable effective Hamiltonians. For effective anyon models, this analysis singles out the relevant physical processes and ex…
We introduce (3+1) dimensional models of short-range-interacting electrons that form a strongly correlated many-body state whose low-energy excitations are relativistic neutral fermions coupled to an emergent gauge field, $\text{QED}_{4}$. We discuss the properties of this critical state and its instabilities towards exotic phases such as a gapless `composite' Weyl semimetal and fully gapped topologically ordered phases that feature anyonic point-like as well as line-like excitations. These fractionalized phases describe electronic insulators. They may be further enriched by symmetries which r…
Understanding the behaviour of topologically ordered lattice systems at finite temperature is a way of assessing their potential as fault-tolerant quantum memories. We compute the natural extension of the topological entanglement entropy for T > 0, namely the subleading correction $I_{\textrm{topo}}$ to the area law for mutual information. Its dependence on T can be written, for Abelian Kitaev models, in terms of information-theoretic functions and readily identifiable scaling behaviour, from which the interplay between volume, temperature, and topological order, can be read. These arguments a…
We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics of topologically ordered systems driven across a continuous phase transition into proximate phases with no, or reduced, topological order. This dynamics exhibits scaling in the spirit of Kibble and Zurek but now {\it without} the presence of symmetry breaking and a local order parameter. The late stages of the process are seen to exhibit a slow, coarsening dynamics for the string-net that underlies the physics of the topological phase, a potentially interesting signature of topological order. We illustrate these phenomena in the context of particular ph…
We investigate entanglement naturally present in the 1D topologically ordered phase protected with the on-site symmetry group of an octahedron as a potential resource for teleportation-based quantum computation. We show that, as long as certain characteristic lengths are finite, all its ground states have the capability to implement any unit-fidelity one-qubit gate operation asymptotically as a key computational building block. This feature is intrinsic to the entire phase, in that perfect gate fidelity coincides with perfect string order parameters under a state-insensitive renormalization pr…
In two-dimensional (2D) insulating magnets, the thermal Hall effect of magnons is believed to be a consequence of topological magnon insulator with separated magnon bands and a well-defined Chern number. Due to broken time-reversal symmetry the thermal Hall effect vanishes in Dirac magnons. In this paper, we show that periodically driven semi-Dirac magnon in 2D insulating honeycomb ferromagnet results in a photoinduced Dirac magnon at the topological phase transition between a photoinduced topological and trivial magnon insulator. Remarkably, the photoinduced Dirac magnon and the photoinduced …
We construct a family of exactly solvable spin models that illustrate a novel mechanism for fractionalization in topologically ordered phases, dubbed the string flux mechanism. The essential idea is that an anyon of a topological phase can be endowed with fractional quantum numbers when the string attached to it slides over a background pattern of flux in the ground state. The string flux models that illustrate this mechanism are $Z_n$ quantum double models defined on specially constructed $d$-dimensional lattices, and possess $Z_n$ topological order for $d \geq 2$. The models have a unitary, …
The 2+1D topological order can be characterized by the mapping-class-group representations for Riemann surfaces of genus-1, genus-2, etc. In this paper, we use those representations to determine the possible gapped boundaries of a 2+1D topological order, as well as the domain walls between two topological orders. We find that mapping-class-group representations for both genus-1 and genus-2 surfaces are needed to determine the gapped domain walls and boundaries. Our systematic theory is based on the fixed-point partition functions for the walls (or the boundaries), which completely characterize…
Transitions between different topologically ordered phases have been studied by artificially creating boundaries between these gapped phases and thus studying their effects relating to condensation and tunneling of particles from one phase to the other. In this work we introduce exactly solvable models which are similar to the quantum double models (QDM) of Kitaev where such domain walls are dynamically generated making them a part of the spectrum. These systems have a local symmetry and may or may not have a global symmetry leading to the possibility of a ground state degeneracy arising from …
We show that the presence of Majorana zero modes (2D), and chiral-dispersing Majorana modes (3D), in the vortex cores of superconductors are neither sufficient nor necessary conditions for one to conclude the superconductivity is topologically non-trivial. We discuss the relevance of this result to the proximity-induced superconductivity, in the presence of magnetic field, on the surface of topological insulators.
We investigate transitions between topologically ordered phases in two spatial dimensions induced by the condensation of a bosonic quasiparticle. To this end, we formulate an extension of the theory of symmetry breaking phase transitions which applies to phases with topological excitations described by quantum groups or modular tensor categories. This enables us to deal with phases whose quasiparticles have non-integer quantum dimensions and obey braid statistics. Many examples of such phases can be constructed from two-dimensional rational conformal field theories and we find that there is a …
We present an approach to identify topological order based on unbiased infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) simulations, i.e. where we do not impose a virtual symmetry on the tensors during the optimization of the tensor network ansatz. As an example we consider the ground state of the toric code model in a magnetic field exhibiting $Z_2$ topological order. The optimization is done by an efficient energy minimization approach based on a summation of tensor environments to compute the gradient. We show that the optimized tensors, when brought into the right gauge, are approximately …
Boson condensation in topological quantum field theories (TQFT) has been previously investigated through the formalism of Frobenius algebras and the use of vertex lifting coefficients. While general, this formalism is physically opaque and computationally arduous: analyses of TQFT condensation are practically performed on a case by case basis and for very simple theories only, mostly not using the Frobenius algebra formalism. In this paper we provide a new way of treating boson condensation that is computationally efficient. With a minimal set of physical assumptions, such as commutativity of …
We consider universal statistical properties of systems that are characterized by phase states with macroscopic degeneracy of the ground state. A possible topological order in such systems is described by non-linear discrete equations. We focus on the discrete equations which take place in the case of generalized exclusion principle statistics. We show that their exact solutions are quantum dimensions of the irreducible representations of certain quantum group. These solutions provide an example of the point where the generalized exclusion principle statistics and braid statistics meet each ot…
Distinguishing different topologically ordered phases and characterizing phase transitions between them is a difficult task due to the absence of local order parameters. In this paper, we use a combination of analytical and numerical approaches to distinguish two such phases and characterize a phase transition between them. The "toric code" and "double semion" models are simple lattice models exhibiting Z2 topological order. Although both models express the same topological ground state degeneracies and entanglement entropies, they are distinct phases of matter because their emergent quasi-par…
We study novel type of contributions to the entropy of the Maxwell system defined on a compact manifold such as torus. These new terms are not related to the physical propagating photons. Rather, these novel contributions emerge as a result of tunnelling events when transitions occur between topologically different but physical identical vacuum winding states. We compute two new (topologically protected) types of contributions to the entropy in this system resulting from this dynamics. First contribution has a negative sign, expressed in terms of the magnetic susceptibility, and it is similar …
Many-body localized (MBL) systems are often described using their local integrals of motion, which, for spin systems, are commonly assumed to be a local unitary transform of the set of on-site spin-z operators. We show that this assumption cannot hold for topologically ordered MBL systems. Using a suitable definition to capture such systems in any spatial dimension, we demonstrate a number of features, including that MBL topological order, if present: (i) is the same for all eigenstates; (ii) is robust in character against any perturbation preserving MBL; (iii) implies that on topologically no…
Certain phase transitions between topological quantum field theories (TQFT) are driven by the condensation of bosonic anyons. However, as bosons in a TQFT are themselves nontrivial collective excitations, there can be topological obstructions that prevent them from condensing. Here we formulate such an obstruction in the form of a no-go theorem. We use it to show that no condensation is possible in SO(3)$_k$ TQFTs with odd $k$. We further show that a layered theory obtained by tensoring SO(3)$_k$ TQFT with itself any integer number of times does not admit condensation transitions either. This …
We prove that uniformly small short-range perturbations do not close the bulk gap above the ground state of frustration-free quantum spin systems that satisfy a standard local topological quantum order condition. In contrast with earlier results, we do not require a positive lower bound for finite-system Hamiltonians uniform in the system size. To obtain this result, we adapt the Bravyi-Hastings-Michalakis strategy to the GNS representation of the infinite-system ground state.
We consider 1d Hamiltonian systems whose ground states display symmetry protected topological order. We show that ground states within the topological phase cannot be connected with each other through LOCC between a bipartition of the system. Our claim is demonstrated by analyzing the entanglement spectrum and Renyi entropies of different physical systems providing examples for symmetry protected topological phases. Specifically, we consider spin-1/2 Cluster-Ising model and a class of spin-1 models undergoing quantum phase transitions to the Haldane phase. Our results provide a probe for simme…
We report the structural, vibrational and electrical transport properties up to 16 GPa of the 1T-TiTe2, a prominent layered 2D system, which is predicted to show a series of topologically trivial - nontrivial transitions under hydrostatic compression. We clearly show signatures of two iso-structural transition at 2 GPa and 4 GPa obtained from the minima in c/a ratio concomitant with the phonon linewidth anomalies of Eg and A1g modes at around the same pressures, providing strong indication of unusual electron-phonon coupling associated to these transitions. Resistivity presents nonlinear behav…
The tensor-entanglement renormalization group approach is applied to Hamiltonians that realize a class of topologically ordered states -- string-net condensed states. We analyze phase transitions between phases with and without string-net condensation. These phase transitions change topological order without changing any symmetries. This demonstrates that the tensor-entanglement renormalization group approach can be used to study the phase diagram of a quantum system with topologically ordered phases.
What kinds of symmetry-protected topologically ordered (SPTO) ground states can be used for universal measurement-based quantum computation in a similar fashion to the 2D cluster state? 2D SPTO states are classified not only by global on-site symmetries but also by subsystem symmetries, which are fine-grained symmetries dependent on the lattice geometry. Recently, all states within so-called SPTO cluster phases on the square and hexagonal lattices have been shown to be universal, based on the presence of subsystem symmetries and associated structures of quantum cellular automata. Motivated by …
We numerically compute the density of states (DOS) of interacting disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) having midgap states showing $e/2$ fractional edge charges. The computed Hartree-Fock DOS is linear at the critical disorder strength where the gap vanishes. This implies an $I\mbox{-}V$ curve of $I\propto V^2$. Thus, $I\mbox{-}V$ curve measurement may yield evidence of fractional charges in interacting disordered ZGNR. We show that even a weak disorder potential acts as a singular perturbation on zigzag edge electronic states, producing drastic changes in the energy spectrum. Spin-ch…
Majorana zero modes are usually attributed to topological superconductors. We study a class of two-dimensional topologically trivial superconductors without chiral edge modes, which nevertheless host robust Majorana zero modes in topological defects. The construction of this minimal single-band model is facilitated by the Hopf map and the Hopf invariant. This work will stimulate investigations of Majorana zero modes in superconductors in the topologically trivial regime.
Measurement-based quantum computation describes a scheme where entanglement of resource states is utilized to simulate arbitrary quantum gates via local measurements. Recent works suggest that symmetry-protected topologically non-trivial, short-ranged entanged states are promising candidates for such a resource. Miller and Miyake [NPJ Quantum Information 2, 16036 (2016)] recently constructed a particular $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry-protected topological state on the Union-Jack lattice and established its quantum computational universality. However, they sugg…
Measurement-based quantum computation is a model for quantum information processing utilizing local measurements on suitably entangled resource states for the implementation of quantum gates. A complete characterization for universal resource states is still missing. It has been shown that symmetry-protected topological order in one dimension can be exploited for the protection of certain quantum gates in measurement-based quantum computation. In this paper we show that the two-dimensional plaquette states on arbitrary lattices exhibit nontrivial symmetry-protected topological order in terms o…
Are systems that display Topological Quantum Order (TQO), and have a gap to excitations, hardware fault-tolerant at finite temperatures? We show that in surface code models that display low d-dimensional Gauge-Like Symmetries, such as Kitaev's and its generalizations, the expectation value of topological symmetry operators vanishes at any non-zero temperature, a phenomenon that we coined thermal fragility. The autocorrelation time for the non-local topological quantities in these systems may remain finite even in the thermodynamic limit. We provide explicit expressions for the autocorrelation …
Negative signs in many-body wavefunctions play an important role in quantum mechanics. The ground-state wavefunction of double semion model on a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice contains an intrinsic sign which cannot be removed by any local transformation. Here we proposed a generic double semion wavefunction in tensor network representation, and the wavefunction norm is mapped to the partition function of a triangular lattice Ashkin-Teller model with imaginary magnetic fields and imaginary three-spin triangular face interactions. To solve this non-Hermitian model with parity-time (PT) symme…
We study effectively one-dimensional systems that emerge at the edge of a two-dimensional topologically ordered state, or at the boundary between two topologically ordered states. We argue that anyons of the bulk are associated with emergent symmetries of the edge, which play a crucial role in the structure of its phase diagram. Using this symmetry principle, transitions between distinct gapped phases at the boundaries of Abelian states can be understood in terms of symmetry breaking transitions or transitions between symmetry protected topological phases. Yet more exotic phenomena occur when …
We study networks of Coulomb-blockaded integer quantum Hall islands with even fillings $ν=2k$ ($k$ being an integer), including cases with $2k$ layers each of $ν=1$ fillings. Allowing only spin-current interactions between the islands (i.e., without any charge transfer), we obtain solvable models leading to a rich set of insulating $SU(2)_k$ topologically ordered phases. The case with $k=1$ is dual to the Kalmeyer-Laughlin phase, $k=2$ to Kitaev's chiral spin liquid and the Moore-Read state, and $k=3$ contains a Fibonacci anyon that may be utilized for universal topological quantum computation…
We study $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topologically ordered states enriched by translational symmetry by employing a recently developed 2D bosonization approach that implements an exact $\mathbb{Z}_2$ charge-flux attachment in the lattice. Such states can display `weak symmetry breaking' of translations, in which both the Hamiltonian and ground state remain fully translational invariant but the symmetry is `broken' by its anyon quasi-particles, in the sense that its action maps them into a different super-selection sector. We demonstrate that this phenomenon occurs when the fermionic spinons form a weak top…
We argue that QCD belongs to a topologically ordered phase similar to many well-known condensed matter systems with a gap such as topological insulators or superconductors. Our arguments are based on an analysis of the so-called "deformed QCD" which is a weakly coupled gauge theory, but nevertheless preserves all the crucial elements of strongly interacting QCD, including confinement, nontrivial $θ$ dependence, degeneracy of the topological sectors, etc. Specifically, we construct the so-called topological "BF" action which reproduces the well known infrared features of the theory such as non-…
We revisit a venerable question: what is the nature of the ordering in a superconductor? We find that the answer is properly that the superconducting state exhibits topological order in the sense of Wen, i.e. that while it lacks a local order parameter, it is sensitive to the global topology of the underlying manifold and exhibits an associated fractionalization of quantum numbers. We show that this perspective unifies a number of previous observations on superconductors and their low lying excitations and that this complex can be elegantly summarized in a purely topological action of the ``$B…
We prove a nontrivial circuit-depth lower bound for preparing a low-energy state of a locally interacting quantum many-body system in two dimensions, assuming the circuit is geometrically local. For preparing any state which has an energy density of at most $ε$ with respect to Kitaev's toric code Hamiltonian on a two dimensional lattice $Λ$, we prove a lower bound of $Ω\left(\min\left(1/ε^{\frac{1-α}{2}}, \sqrt{|Λ|}\right)\right)$ for any $α>0$. We discuss two implications. First, our bound implies that the lowest energy density obtainable from a large class of existing variational circuits (e…
Until the late 1980s, phases of matter were understood in terms of Landau's symmetry breaking theory. Following the discovery of the quantum Hall effect the introduction of a second class of phases, those with topological order, was necessary. Phase transitions within the first class of phases involve a change in symmetry, whereas those between topological phases require a change in topological order. However, in rare cases transitions may occur between the two classes in which the vanishing of the topological order is accompanied by the emergence of a broken symmetry. Here, we report the exis…
We demonstrate that two toric code layers on the square lattice coupled by an Ising interaction display two distinct phases with intrinsic topological order. The second-order quantum phase transition between the weakly-coupled $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ and the strongly-coupled $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order can be described by the condensation of bosonic quasiparticles from both sides and belongs to the 3d Ising$^*$ universality class. This can be shown by an exact duality transformation to the transverse-field Ising model on the square lattice, which builds on the existence of an ext…

Representation by neural networks, in particular by restricted Boltzmann machines (RBM), has provided a powerful computational tool to solve quantum many-body problems. An important open question is how to characterize which class of quantum states can be efficiently represented with the RBM. Here, we show that the RBM can efficiently represent a wide class of many-body entangled states with rich exotic topological orders. This includes: (1) ground states of double semion and twisted quantum double models with intrinsic topological orders; (2) states of the AKLT model and 2D CZX model with sym…
