We study the Z2 topologically ordered surface state of three-dimensional bosonic SPT phases with the discrete symmetries G1 x G2. It has been argued that the topologically ordered surface state cannot be realized on a purely two-dimensional lattice model. We carefully examine the statement and show that the surface state should break G2 if the symmetry G1 is gauged. This manifests the conflict of the symmetry G1 and G2 on the surface of the three-dimensional SPT phase. Given that there is no such phenomena in the purely two-dimensional model, it signals that the symmetries are encoded anomalously on the surface of the three-dimensional SPT phases and that the surface state can never be realized on the purely two-dimensional models.
We argue that symmetry-broken phases proximate in phase space to symmetry-protected topological phases can exhibit dynamical signatures of topological physics. This dynamical, symmetry-protected "topological" regime is characterized by anomalously long edge coherence times due to the topological decoration of quasiparticle excitations, even if the underlying zero-temperature ground state is in a non-topological, symmetry-broken state. The dramatic enhancement of coherence can even persist at infinite temperature due to prethermalization. We find exponentially long edge coherence times that are…
Majorana zero modes are usually attributed to topological superconductors. We study a class of two-dimensional topologically trivial superconductors without chiral edge modes, which nevertheless host robust Majorana zero modes in topological defects. The construction of this minimal single-band model is facilitated by the Hopf map and the Hopf invariant. This work will stimulate investigations of Majorana zero modes in superconductors in the topologically trivial regime.
Topologically protected measurement-based quantum computation on the thermal state of a nearest-neighbor two-body Hamiltonian with spin-3/2 particles
最近,李{ \it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett.
Majorana zero modes are a promising platform for topologically protected quantum information processing. Their non-Abelian nature, which is key for performing quantum gates, is most prominently exhibited through braiding. While originally formulated for two-dimensional (2d) systems, it has been shown that braiding can also be realized using one-dimensional (1d) wires by forming an essentially two-dimensional network. Here, we show that in driven systems far from equilibrium, one can do away with the second spatial dimension altogether by instead using quasienergy as the second dimension. To re…
The observation of wormholes has proven to be difficult in the field of astrophysics. However, with the discovery of novel topological quantum materials it is possible to observe astrophysical and particle physics effects in condensed matter physics. It is proposed in this work that wormholes can exist in a type-III Weyl phase. In addition, these wormholes are topologically protected, making them feasible to create and measure in condensed matter systems. Finally, Co$_3$In$_2$X$_2$ (X = S, Se) are identified as ideal type-III Weyl semimetals and experiments are put forward to confirm the exist…
We investigate entanglement naturally present in the 1D topologically ordered phase protected with the on-site symmetry group of an octahedron as a potential resource for teleportation-based quantum computation. We show that, as long as certain characteristic lengths are finite, all its ground states have the capability to implement any unit-fidelity one-qubit gate operation asymptotically as a key computational building block. This feature is intrinsic to the entire phase, in that perfect gate fidelity coincides with perfect string order parameters under a state-insensitive renormalization pr…
Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) is considered to probe the non-locality of the Majorana quasiparticles in topological superconductors. We propose here to study the CAR in multiband one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductors which may or may not have chiral symmetries, and show how the CAR can be applied to identify Majorana modes in such systems. In particular, for a multiband 1D topological superconductor with approximate chiral symmetry, both the multiple Majorana and low-energy Andreev bound modes can drive the nearly zero-bias CAR, which is shown to be protected by the chiral symmet…
Predictions of localized Majorana modes, and ideas for manipulating these degrees of freedom, are the two key ingredients in proposals for physical platforms for Majorana quantum computation. Several proposals envisage a scalable network of such Majorana modes coupled bilinearly to each other by quantum-mechanical mixing amplitudes. Here, we develop a theoretical framework for characterizing collective topologically protected zero-energy Majorana fermion excitations of such networks of localized Majorana modes. A key ingredient in our work is the Gallai-Edmonds decomposition of a general graph…
Measurement-based quantum computation describes a scheme where entanglement of resource states is utilized to simulate arbitrary quantum gates via local measurements. Recent works suggest that symmetry-protected topologically non-trivial, short-ranged entanged states are promising candidates for such a resource. Miller and Miyake [NPJ Quantum Information 2, 16036 (2016)] recently constructed a particular $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry-protected topological state on the Union-Jack lattice and established its quantum computational universality. However, they sugg…
The search for topological insulators has been actively promoted in the field of condensed matter physics for further development in energy-efficient information transmission and processing. In this context, recent studies have revealed that not only electrons but also bosonic particles such as magnons can construct edge states carrying nontrivial topological invariants. Here we demonstrate topological triplon bands in the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized quantum antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$, which is closely related to a pseudo-one-dimensional variant of the Su-Schrieffer-Heege…
The book by Volovik [1] contains the argument, which can be considered as the topological proof of the Luttinger theorem. The Green function of the ideal Fermi gas has a pole in the (E,|p|) plane (where E and p are energy and momentum). This pole is considered to be analogous to a vortex in liquid helium. Since a vortex is topologically stable against restricted perturbations, one can include interaction adiabatically (as a succession of small perturbations), and observe transformation of the Fermi gas pole to the Fermi liquid pole. In this argument, the topological stability arises already on…
Measurement-based quantum computation is a model for quantum information processing utilizing local measurements on suitably entangled resource states for the implementation of quantum gates. A complete characterization for universal resource states is still missing. It has been shown that symmetry-protected topological order in one dimension can be exploited for the protection of certain quantum gates in measurement-based quantum computation. In this paper we show that the two-dimensional plaquette states on arbitrary lattices exhibit nontrivial symmetry-protected topological order in terms o…
The magnetic skyrmion with the topological number of unity ($Q=1$) is a well-known nanometric swirling spin structure in the nonlinear $σ$ model with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here, we show that magnetic skyrmion with the topological number of two ($Q=2$) can be created and stabilized by applying vertical spin-polarized current though it cannot exist as a static stable excitation. Magnetic skyrmion with $Q=2$ is a nonequilibrium dynamic object, subsisting on a balance between the energy injection from the current and the energy dissipation by the Gilbert damping. Once it is create…
For most chiralities, semiconducting nanotubes display topologically protected end states of multiple degeneracies. We demonstrate using density matrix renormalization group based quantum chemistry tools that the presence of Coulomb interactions induces the formation of robust end spins. These are the close analogues of ferromagnetic edge states emerging in graphene nanoribbons. The interaction between the two ends is sensitive to the length of the nanotube, its dielectric constant, as well as the size of the end spins: for $S=1/2$ end spins their interaction is antiferromagnetic, while for $S…
Motivated by recent experiments probing anomalous surface states of Dirac semimetals (DSMs) Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$, we raise the question posed in the title. We find that, in marked contrast to Weyl semimetals, the gapless surface states of DSMs are not topologically protected in general, except on time-reversal-invariant planes of surface Brillouin zone. We first demonstrate this in a minimal $4$-band model with a pair of Dirac nodes at ${\bf k}=(0,0,\pm Q)$, where gapless states on the side surfaces are protected only near $k_z=0$. We then validate our conclusions about the absence of a t…
Edge states reveal the nontrivial topology of energy band in the bulk. As localized states at boundaries, many-body edge states may obey a special symmetry that is broken in the bulk. When local particle-particle interaction is induced, they may support a particular property. We consider an extended two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hubbard model and examine the appearance of $η$-pairing states, which are excited eigenstates related to superconductivity. In the absence of Hubbard interaction, the energy band is characterized by topologically invariant polarization in association with edge s…
Recently there is a surge of interests in the so-called topologically protected corner states in 2D and 3D systems. Such systems are considered as high order topological insulators. Wannier centers are used as topological invariants to characterize bulk systems. The existence of corner states is considered as a reflection of the topological non-triviality of bulk energy bands. We demonstrate that the Wannier centers are not topological invariants by showing they depend on the choices of unit cells. The same bulk system can be considered as both topological and trivial with two equally possible…

What kinds of symmetry-protected topologically ordered (SPTO) ground states can be used for universal measurement-based quantum computation in a similar fashion to the 2D cluster state? 2D SPTO states are classified not only by global on-site symmetries but also by subsystem symmetries, which are fine-grained symmetries dependent on the lattice geometry. Recently, all states within so-called SPTO cluster phases on the square and hexagonal lattices have been shown to be universal, based on the presence of subsystem symmetries and associated structures of quantum cellular automata. Motivated by …
We present here the steps enabling the microscopic design of a topologically protected singlet-triplet qubit in an InAsP quantum dot array embedded in an InP nanowire. The qubit is constructed with two Haldane spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ quasiparticles in a synthetic spin one chain. The qubit is described by a two-leg multi-orbital Hubbard Kanamori (HK) model with parameters obtained from the microscopic calculations of up to eight electrons in a single and double quantum dot. In this HK model describing long arrays of quantum dots, using both exact diagonalization and matrix product state (MPS) tools,…

Many-body-localized (MBL) phases can be topologically distinct, but distinguishing these phases using order parameters can be challenging. Here we show how topologically distinct local integrals of motion, variationally parametrized by quantum circuits, can be used to numerically demonstrate the topological inequivalence of MBL phases. We illustrate our approach on a fermionic chain where both topologically distinct MBL phases and benchmark comparisons to order parameters are possible. We also use our approach, augmented by the DMRG-X algorithm, to extract high-energy topological doublets. We …
