The book by Volovik [1] contains the argument, which can be considered as the topological proof of the Luttinger theorem. The Green function of the ideal Fermi gas has a pole in the (E,|p|) plane (where E and p are energy and momentum). This pole is considered to be analogous to a vortex in liquid helium. Since a vortex is topologically stable against restricted perturbations, one can include interaction adiabatically (as a succession of small perturbations), and observe transformation of the Fermi gas pole to the Fermi liquid pole. In this argument, the topological stability arises already on the level of the ideal Fermi gas, which is in conflict with its Cooper instability. We discuss the origin of this controversy.
Majorana zero modes are usually attributed to topological superconductors. We study a class of two-dimensional topologically trivial superconductors without chiral edge modes, which nevertheless host robust Majorana zero modes in topological defects. The construction of this minimal single-band model is facilitated by the Hopf map and the Hopf invariant. This work will stimulate investigations of Majorana zero modes in superconductors in the topologically trivial regime.
Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) is considered to probe the non-locality of the Majorana quasiparticles in topological superconductors. We propose here to study the CAR in multiband one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductors which may or may not have chiral symmetries, and show how the CAR can be applied to identify Majorana modes in such systems. In particular, for a multiband 1D topological superconductor with approximate chiral symmetry, both the multiple Majorana and low-energy Andreev bound modes can drive the nearly zero-bias CAR, which is shown to be protected by the chiral symmet…
We report the design of silica-based 1D phononic crystals (PnCs) with topologically distinct complete phononic bandgaps (PnBGs) and the observation of a topologically protected state of elastic waves at their interface. By choosing different structural parameters of unit cells, two PnCs can possess a common PnBG with different topological nature. At the interface between the two PnCs, a topological interface mode with a quality factor of ~5,650 is observed in the PnBG. Spatial confinement of the interface mode is also confirmed by using photoelastic imaging technique. Such topologically protec…
Edge states reveal the nontrivial topology of energy band in the bulk. As localized states at boundaries, many-body edge states may obey a special symmetry that is broken in the bulk. When local particle-particle interaction is induced, they may support a particular property. We consider an extended two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hubbard model and examine the appearance of $η$-pairing states, which are excited eigenstates related to superconductivity. In the absence of Hubbard interaction, the energy band is characterized by topologically invariant polarization in association with edge s…
Recently, Li {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 107}, 060501 (2011)] have demonstrated that topologically protected measurement-based quantum computation can be implemented on the thermal state of a nearest-neighbor two-body Hamiltonian with spin-2 and spin-3/2 particles provided that the temperature is smaller than a critical value, namely, threshold temperature. Here we show that the thermal state of a nearest-neighbor two-body Hamiltonian, which consists of only spin-3/2 particles, allows us to perform topologically protected measurement-based quantum computation. The threshold temperature…
We highlight the fact that two-dimensional materials with Dirac-like low energy band structures and spin-orbit coupling will produce linearly dispersing topologically protected Jackiw-Rebbi modes at interfaces where the Dirac mass changes sign. These modes may support persistent spin or valley currents parallel to the interface, and the exact arrangement of such topologically protected currents depends crucially on the details of the spin-orbit coupling in the material. As examples, we discuss buckled two-dimensional hexagonal lattices such as silicene or germanene, and transition metal dichal…
Nodal non-centrosymmetric superconductors (NCS) have recently been shown to be topologically non-trivial. An important consequence is the existence of topologically protected flat zero-energy surface bands, which are related to the topological characteristics of the line nodes of the bulk gap via a bulk-boundary correspondence [Schnyder and Ryu, arXiv:1011.1438]. In this paper we examine these zero-energy surface bands using a quasiclassical theory. We determine their spectrum and derive a general condition for their existence in terms of the sign change of the gap functions. A key experimenta…
Three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators in general need to be protected by certain kinds of symmetries other than the presumed $U(1)$ charge conservation. A peculiar exception is the Hopf insulators which are 3D topological insulators characterized by an integer Hopf index. To demonstrate the existence and physical relevance of the Hopf insulators, we construct a class of tight-binding model Hamiltonians which realize all kinds of Hopf insulators with arbitrary integer Hopf index. These Hopf insulator phases have topologically protected surface states and we numerically demonstrate the r…
We present an analytical theory of topologically protected photonic states for the two-dimensional Maxwell equations for a class of continuous periodic dielectric structures, modulated by a domain wall. We further numerically confirm the applicability of this theory for three-dimensional structures.
Topologically protected waves in the linearly polarized Maxwell's equations with gyrotropic, magneto-optic media were studied a decade ago both computationally and experimentally. This paper develops a robust tight-binding model for this system that makes careful use of Wannier function representations. The model provides very good approximations to the underlying band structure. When solved on a semi-infinite strip, it produces exponentially localized edge modes whose corresponding eigenvalues span the frequency band gaps. A set of coupled differential equations are derived which allows one t…
This paper summarizes and extends the authors' work on the bifurcation of topologically protected edge states in continuous two-dimensional honeycomb structures. We consider a family of Schrödinger Hamiltonians consisting of a bulk honeycomb potential and a perturbing edge potential. The edge potential interpolates between two different periodic structures via a domain wall. We begin by reviewing our recent bifurcation theory of edge states for continuous two-dimensional honeycomb structures. The topologically protected bifurcation of edge states is seeded by the zero-energy eigenstate of a on…
One of the principal goals in the design of photonic crystals is the engineering of band gaps and defect states. Drawing on the concepts of band-structure topology, I here describe the formation of exponentially localized, topologically protected midgap states in photonic systems with spatially distributed gain and loss. When gain and loss are suitably arranged these states maintain their topological protection and then acquire a selectively tunable amplification rate. This finds applications in the beam dynamics along a photonic lattice and in the lasing of quasi-one-dimensional photonic crys…
Recent years have brought an explosion of activities in the research of topological aspects of condensed-matter systems. Topologically non-trivial phases of matter are typically accompanied by protected surface states or exotic degenerate excitations such as Majorana end states or Haldane's localized spinons. Topologically protected degeneracies can, however, also appear in the bulk. An intriguing example is provided by Weyl semimetals, where topologically protected electronic band degeneracies and exotic surface states emerge even in the absence of interactions. Here we demonstrate experiment…
The recent discovery of topologically protected surface states in the noncentrosymmetric $α$-BiPd and the centrosymmetric $β$-Bi$_{2}$Pd has renewed the interest in the Bi-Pd family of superconductors. Here, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate the structure, electronic, and topological features of $β$-Bi$_{2}$Pd, in bulk and in thin films of various thicknesses. We find that the Van der Waals dispersion corrections are important for reproducing the experimental structural parameters, while the spin-orbit interaction is critical for properly describing the appearance of topol…
Bulk Bi2Te3 is known to be a topological insulator. We investigate surface states of Bi2Te3(111) thin films using density-functional theory including spin-orbit coupling. We construct a method to unambiguously identify surface states of thin film topological insulators. Applying this method for one to six quintuple layers of Bi2Te3, we find that the topological nature of the surface states remains robust with the film thickness and that the films of three or more quintuple layers have topologically non-trivial or protected surface states, in agreement with recent experiments.
We study a class of periodic Schrödinger operators, which in distinguished cases can be proved to have linear band-crossings or "Dirac points". We then show that the introduction of an "edge", via adiabatic modulation of these periodic potentials by a domain wall, results in the bifurcation of spatially localized "edge states". These bound states are associated with the topologically protected zero-energy mode of an asymptotic one-dimensional Dirac operator. Our model captures many aspects of the phenomenon of topologically protected edge states for two-dimensional bulk structures such as the …
The magnetic skyrmion with the topological number of unity ($Q=1$) is a well-known nanometric swirling spin structure in the nonlinear $σ$ model with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here, we show that magnetic skyrmion with the topological number of two ($Q=2$) can be created and stabilized by applying vertical spin-polarized current though it cannot exist as a static stable excitation. Magnetic skyrmion with $Q=2$ is a nonequilibrium dynamic object, subsisting on a balance between the energy injection from the current and the energy dissipation by the Gilbert damping. Once it is create…
Hybrid photonic nanostructures allow the engineering of novel interesting states of light. One recent example is topological photonic crystals where a nontrivial Berry phase of the photonic band structure gives rise to topologically protected unidirectionally-propagating (chiral) edge states of photons. Here we demonstrate that by coupling an array of emitters to the chiral photonic edge state one can create strongly correlated states of photons in a highly controllable way. These are topologically protected and have a number of remarkable universal properties: The outcome of scattering does n…
For most chiralities, semiconducting nanotubes display topologically protected end states of multiple degeneracies. We demonstrate using density matrix renormalization group based quantum chemistry tools that the presence of Coulomb interactions induces the formation of robust end spins. These are the close analogues of ferromagnetic edge states emerging in graphene nanoribbons. The interaction between the two ends is sensitive to the length of the nanotube, its dielectric constant, as well as the size of the end spins: for $S=1/2$ end spins their interaction is antiferromagnetic, while for $S…
"Wormhole" geometry for entrapping topologically-protected qubits in non-Abelian quantum Hall states and probing them with voltage and noise measurements
Topological effects continue to fascinate physicists since more than three decades. One of their main applications are high-precision measurements of the resistivity. We propose to make also use of the spatially separated edge states. It is possible to realize strongly direction-dependent group velocities. They can also be tuned over orders of magnitude so that robust delay lines and interference devices are within reach.
Gated trilayer graphene exhibits energy gap in its most stable ABC stacking. Here we show that when the stacking order changes from ABC to CBA, three gapless states appear in each valley. The states are topologically protected and their number is related to the change of the valley Chern number across the stacking boundary. The stacking change is achieved by corrugation or delamination in the top and bottom layers, which simultaneously yields two AB/BA stacking domain walls in the pairs of adjacent layers (in bilayers). This in turn causes that for some gate voltages two pairs of topological r…
Recently there is a surge of interests in the so-called topologically protected corner states in 2D and 3D systems. Such systems are considered as high order topological insulators. Wannier centers are used as topological invariants to characterize bulk systems. The existence of corner states is considered as a reflection of the topological non-triviality of bulk energy bands. We demonstrate that the Wannier centers are not topological invariants by showing they depend on the choices of unit cells. The same bulk system can be considered as both topological and trivial with two equally possible…
Quantum transport measurements including the Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak (AAS) and Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effects, universal conductance fluctuations (UCF), and weak anti-localization (WAL) have been carried out on epitaxial Bi thin films ($10-70$ bilayers) on Si(111). The results show that while the film interior is insulating all six surfaces of the Bi thin films are robustly metallic. We propose that these properties are the manifestation of a novel phenomenon, namely, a topologically trivial bulk system can become topologically non-trivial when it is made into a thin film. We stress that what's ob…
We show that topologically protected defect states can exist in open (leaky or lossy) systems even when these systems are topologically trivial in the closed limit. The states appear from within the continuum, thus in absence of a band gap, and are generated via exceptional points (a spectral transition that occurs in open wave and quantum systems with a generalized time-reversal symmetry), or via a degeneracy induced by charge-conjugation-symmetry (which is related to the pole transition of Majorana zero modes). We demonstrate these findings for a leaking passive coupled-resonator optical wav…
We report ab initio calculations showing that a single one-dimensional extended defect can originate topologically-protected metallic states in the bulk of two-dimensional topological insulators. We find that a narrow extended defect composed of periodic units consisting of one octogonal and two pentagonal rings embedded in the hexagonal bulk of a bismuth bilayer introduces two pairs of one-dimensional Dirac-fermion states with opposite spin-momentum locking. Although both Dirac pairs are localized along the extended-defect core, their interactions are screened due to the trivial topological n…
We perform both lattice dynamics analysis and molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate the existence of topologically protected phonon modes in a two-dimensional, monolayer hexagonal boron nitride sheet. The topological phonon modes are found to be localized at an in-plane interface that divides the system into two regions of distinct valley Chern numbers. The dispersion of this topological phonon mode crosses over the frequency gap [1123, 1278] cm^{-1}, which is opened through analogy with the quantum valley Hall effect by breaking inversion symmetry of the boron and nitride atoms in the…
Majorana zero modes are non-Abelian quasiparticles that emerge on the edges of topological phases of superconductors. Evidence of their presence has been reported in transport measurements on engineered superconducting-based nanostructures. In this manuscript we identify signatures of a topologically protected dynamical manipulation of Majorana zero modes via continuous transport measurement during the manipulation. Specifically, we show that, in a two-terminal geometry, the heat pumped across the terminals at low temperature and voltage bias is characterized by a universal value. We show that…
We describe the possibility for topologically robust edge states existing on interfaces of triangular lattices which are supported by rotational symmetries that are sensitive to boundary conditions. Such states are trivial from the perspective of Berry curvature, but result instead from an interplay between crystalline symmetries and finite boundary effects. Regardless, we show such states are in a distinct topological phase, provided the gauge-dependent symmetries are maintained. Such a model describes a number of recent bosonic experimental demonstrations on triangular lattices, the physics …
The investigation of topologically protected waves in classical media has opened unique opportunities to achieve exotic properties like one-way phonon transport, protection from backscattering and immunity to imperfections. Contrary to acoustic and electromagnetic domains, their observation in elastic solids has so far been elusive due to the presence of both shear and longitudinal modes and their modal conversion at interfaces and free surfaces. Here we report the experimental observation of topologically protected helical edge waves in elastic media. The considered structure consists of an e…
We measure the Hall conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas formed at a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction in the terahertz regime close to the cyclotron resonance frequency by employing a highly sensitive Faraday rotation method coupled with electrical gating of the sample to change the electron density. We observe clear plateau-and step-like features in the Faraday rotation angle vs. electron density and magnetic field (Landau-level filling factor), which are the high frequency manifestation of quantum Hall plateaus - a signature of topologically protected edge states. The results are compare…
In minimally twisted bilayer graphene, a moir{é} pattern consisting of AB and BA stacking regions separated by domain walls forms. These domain walls are predicted to support counterpropogating topologically protected helical (TPH) edge states when the AB and BA regions are gapped. We fabricate designer moir{é} crystals with wavelengths longer than 50 nm and demonstrate the emergence of TPH states on the domain wall network by scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements. We observe a double-line profile of the TPH states on the domain walls, only occurring when the AB and BA regions are gappe…
Previously, graphene nanoribbons set in lateral heterostructures with hexagonal boron nitride were predicted to support topologically protected states at low energy. We investigate how robust the transport properties of these states are against lattice disorder. We find that forms of disorder that do not couple the two valleys of the zigzag graphene nanoribbon do not impact the transport properties at low bias, indicating that these lateral heterostructures are very promising candidates for chip-scale conducting interconnects. Forms of disorder that do couple the two valleys, such as vacancies…
Topological optical states exhibit unique immunity to defects and the ability to propagate without losses rendering them ideal for photonic applications.A powerful class of such states is based on time-reversal symmetry breaking of the optical response. However, existing proposals either involve sophisticated and bulky structural designs or can only operate in the microwave regime. Here, we propose and provide a theoretical proof-of-principle demonstration for highly confined topologically protected optical states to be realized at infrared frequencies in a simple 2D material structure-a period…
Single-photon super- and subradiance are important for the quantum memory and quantum information. We investigate one-dimensional atomic arrays under the spatially periodic magnetic field with a tunable phase, which provides a distinctive physics aspect of revealing exotic two-dimensional topological phenomena with a synthetic dimension. A butterfly-like nontrivial bandstructure associated with the non-Hermitian physics involving strong long-range interactions has been discovered. It leads to pairs of topologically-protected edge states, which exhibit the robust super- or subradiance behavior,…
We show that the twisted graphene bilayer can reveal unusual topological properties at low energies, as a consequence of a Dirac-point splitting. These features rely on a symmetry analysis of the electron hopping between the two layers of graphene and we derive a simplified effective low-energy Hamiltonian which captures the essential topological properties of twisted bilayer graphene. The corresponding Landau levels peculiarly reveal a degenerate zero-energy mode which cannot be lifted by strong magnetic fields.
Topologically gapless edge states, characterized by topological invariants and Berry's phases of bulk energy bands, provide amazing techniques to robustly control the reflectionless propagation of electrons, photons and phonons. Recently, a new family of topological phases, dictated by the bulk polarization, has been observed, leading to the discovery of the higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs). So far, the HOTIs are only demonstrated in discrete mechanical and electromagnetic systems and electrical circuits with the quantized quadrupole polarization. Here, we realize the higher-order t…
We present a symmetric double-sided pillared phononic crystals (PPnCs) that can emulate both quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) and quantum valley Hall effect (QVHE) by solely imposing different geometric perturbations. Indeed, the Dirac cones can occur in the low (deep subwavelength) and high frequency regime by judiciously turning the parameters of the attached pillars and even a double Dirac cone can be achieved. We realize the valley-protected, the pseudospin-protected or the pseudospin-valley coupled edge states with the proposed platform. Besides, we show a variety of refraction phenomena (…
Exploring the properties and applications of topological quantum states is essential to better understand topological matter. Here, we theoretically study a quasi-one-dimensional topological atom array. In the low-energy regime, the atom array is equivalent to a topological superatom. Driving the superatom in a cavity, we study the interaction between light and topological quantum states. We find that the edge states exhibit topology-protected quantum coherence, which can be characterized from the photon transmission. This quantum coherence helps us to find a superradiance-subradiance transiti…
Time reversal (T) invariant topological insulator is widely recognized as one of the fundamental discoveries in condensed matter physics, for which the most fascinating hallmark is perhaps a spin based topological protection, the total cancellation of scattering of conduction electrons with certain spins on matter surface. Recently, it has created a paradigm shift for topological insulators, from electronics to photonics, phononics as well as mechanics, bringing about not only involved new physics but also potential applications in robust wave transport. Despite the growing interests in realiz…
The topological aspects of electrons in solids emerge in realistic matters as represented by topological insulators. They are expected to show a variety of new magneto-electric phenomena, and especially the ones hosting superconductivity are strongly desired as the candidate for topological superconductors (TSC). Possible TSC materials have been mostly developed by introducing carriers into topological insulators, nevertheless, those exhibiting indisputable superconductivity free from inhomogeneity are very few. Here we report on the observation of topologically-protected surface states in a c…
The zero-energy Landau level of bilayer graphene is shown to be anomalously sharp (delta-function like) against bond disorder as long as the disorder is correlated over a few lattice constants. The robustness of the zero-mode anomaly can be attributed to the preserved chiral symmetry. Unexpectedly, even when we apply a finite potential difference (i.e., an electric field) between the top and the bottom layers, the valley-split $n=0$ Landau levels remain anomalously sharp although they are now shifted away from the zero energy, while the $n=1$ Landau levels exhibit the usual behavior.
The doubling of massless Dirac fermions on two-dimensional lattices is theoretically studied. It has been shown that the doubling of massless Dirac fermions on a lattice with broken chiral symmetry is topologically protected even when the Dirac cone is tilted. This is due to the generalized chiral symmetry defined for lattice systems, where such models can be generated by a deformation of the chiral-symmetric lattice models. The present paper shows for two-band lattice models that this is a general way to produce systems with the generalized chiral symmetry in that such systems can always be t…
We consider Toeplitz operators defined on a concave corner-shaped subset of the square lattice. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for these operators to be Fredholm. We further construct a Fredholm concave corner Toeplitz operator of index one. By using this, a relation between Fredholm indices of quarter-plane and concave corner Toeplitz operators is clarified. As an application, topological invariants and corner states for some bulk-edges gapped Hamiltonians on two-dimensional (2-D) class AIII and 3-D class A systems with concave corners are studied. Explicit examples clarify th…
Superconducting proximity pairing in helical edge modes, such as those of topological insulators (TI), is predicted to provide a unique platform for realizing Majorana zero modes (MZMs). We use scanning tunneling microscopy measurements to probe the influence of proximity induced superconductivity and magnetism on the helical hinge states of Bi(111) films, grown on a superconducting Nb substrate and decorated with magnetic Fe clusters. Consistent with model calculations, our measurements reveal the emergence of a localized MZM at the interface between the superconducting helical edge channel a…
Recent experiments [L. Ju et al., Nature, 2015, 520, 650] confirm the existence of gapless states at domain walls created in gated bilayer graphene, when the sublattice stacking is changed from AB to BA. These states are significant because they are topologically protected, valley-polarized and give rise to conductance along the domain wall. Current theoretical models predict the appearance of such states only at domain walls, which preserve the sublattice order. Here we show that the appearance of the topologically protected states in stacking domain walls can be much more common in bilayer g…
Photonic topological systems, the electromagnetic analog of the topological materials in condensed matter physics, create many opportunities to design optical devices with novel properties. We present an experimental realization of the bi-anisotropic meta waveguide photonic system replicating both quantum Hall (QH) and quantum spin-Hall (QSH) topological insulating phases. With careful design, a composite QH-QSH photonic topological material is created and experimentally shown to support reflection-free edgemodes, a heterogeneous topological structure that is unprecedented in condensed matter …
The question whether the mixed phase of a gapless superconductor can support a Landau level is a celebrated problem in the context of \textit{d}-wave superconductivity, with a negative answer: The scattering of the subgap excitations (massless Dirac fermions) by the vortex lattice obscures the Landau level quantization. Here we show that the same question has a positive answer for a Weyl superconductor: The chirality of the Weyl fermions protects the zeroth Landau level by means of a topological index theorem. As a result, the heat conductance parallel to the magnetic field has the universal v…
It is proposed that a lattice, with constituent masses and spring constants, may be considered as a model system for topological matter. For instance, a relative variation of the inter- and intra-unit cell spring constants can be used to create, tune, and invert band structure. Such an aspect is obtained while preserving time reversal symmetry, and consequently emulates the quantum spin Hall effect. The modal displacement fields of the mass-spring lattice were superposed so to yield pseudospin fields, with positive or negative group velocity. Considering that harmonic oscillators are the basis…
