In this paper, we propose variants of forward-backward splitting method for solving the system of splitting inclusion problem. We propose a conceptual algorithm containing three variants, each having a different projection steps. The algorithm consists in two parts, the first and main contains an explicit Armijo-type search in the spirit of the extragradient-like methods for variational inequalities. In the iterative process the operator forward-backward is computed only one time for each inclusion problem, this represent a great computational saving if we compare with Tseng's algorithm, because the computational cost of this operator is very high. The second part of the scheme consists in special projection steps. The convergence analysis of the proposed scheme is given assuming monotonicity on both operators, without assuming Lipschitz continuity on the forward operators.
In this work, we propose and analyse two splitting algorithms for finding a zero of the sum of three monotone operators, one of which is assumed to be Lipschitz continuous. Each iteration of these algorithms require one forward evaluation of the Lipschitz continuous operator and one resolvent evaluation of each of the other two operators. By specialising to two operator inclusions, we recover the forward-reflected-backward and the reflected-forward-backward splitting methods as particular cases. The inspiration for the proposed algorithms arises from interpretations of the aforementioned refle…
We propose a variable metric forward-backward splitting algorithm and prove its convergence in real Hilbert spaces. We then use this framework to derive primal-dual splitting algorithms for solving various classes of monotone inclusions in duality. Some of these algorithms are new even when specialized to the fixed metric case. Various applications are discussed.
In this work, we propose a simple modification of the forward-backward splitting method for finding a zero in the sum of two monotone operators. Our method converges under the same assumptions as Tseng's forward-backward-forward method, namely, it does not require cocoercivity of the single-valued operator. Moreover, each iteration only requires one forward evaluation rather than two as is the case for Tseng's method. Variants of the method incorporating a linesearch, relaxation and inertia, or a structured three operator inclusion are also discussed.
In this work we propose a new splitting technique, namely Asymmetric Forward-Backward-Adjoint splitting, for solving monotone inclusions involving three terms, a maximally monotone, a cocoercive and a bounded linear operator. Classical operator splitting methods, like Douglas-Rachford and Forward-Backward splitting are special cases of our new algorithm. Asymmetric Forward-Backward-Adjoint splitting unifies, extends and sheds light on the connections between many seemingly unrelated primal-dual algorithms for solving structured convex optimization problems proposed in recent years. More import…
We propose a forward-backward splitting algorithm based on Bregman distances for composite minimization problems in general reflexive Banach spaces. The convergence is established using the notion of variable quasi-Bregman monotone sequences. Various examples are discussed, including some in Euclidean spaces, where new algorithms are obtained.
In this paper, we propose a stochastic forward-backward-forward splitting algorithm and prove its almost sure weak convergence in real separable Hilbert spaces. Applications to composite monotone inclusion and minimization problems are demonstrated.
We propose an inertial forward-backward splitting algorithm to compute the zero of a sum of two monotone operators allowing for stochastic errors in the computation of the operators. More precisely, we establish almost sure convergence in real Hilbert spaces of the sequence of iterates to an optimal solution. Then, based on this analysis, we introduce two new classes of stochastic inertial primal-dual splitting methods for solving structured systems of composite monotone inclusions and prove their convergence. Our results extend to the stochastic and inertial setting various types of structure…
We propose and analyze a versatile and general algorithm called nonlinear forward-backward splitting (NOFOB). The algorithm consists of two steps; first an evaluation of a nonlinear forward-backward map followed by a relaxed projection onto the separating hyperplane it constructs. The key of the method is the nonlinearity in the forward-backward step, where the backward part is based on a nonlinear resolvent construction that allows for the kernel in the resolvent to be a nonlinear single-valued maximal monotone operator. This generalizes the standard resolvent as well as the Bregman resolvent…
In this paper, we develop rapidly convergent forward-backward algorithms for computing zeroes of the sum of finitely many maximally monotone operators. A modification of the classical forward-backward method for two general operators is first considered, by incorporating an inertial term (closed to the acceleration techniques introduced by Nesterov), a constant relaxation factor and a correction term. In a Hilbert space setting, we prove the weak convergence to equilibria of the iterates $(x_n)$, with worst-case rates of $ o(n^{-2})$ in terms of both the discrete velocity and the fixed point r…
Monotone inclusions have wide applications in solving various convex optimization problems arising in signal and image processing, machine learning, and medical image reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a new splitting algorithm for finding a zero of the sum of a maximally monotone operator, a monotone Lipschitzian operator, and a cocoercive operator, which is called outer reflected forward-backward splitting algorithm. Under mild conditions on the iterative parameters, we prove the convergence of the proposed algorithm. As applications, we employ the proposed algorithm to solve composit…
Monotone inclusions involving the sum of three maximally monotone operators or more have received much attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose three splitting algorithms for finding a zero of the sum of four monotone operators, which are two maximally monotone operators, one monotone Lipschitz operator, and one cocoercive operator. These three splitting algorithms are based on the forward-reflected-Douglas-Rachford splitting algorithm, backward-forward-reflected-backward splitting algorithm, and backward-reflected-forward-backward splitting algorithm, respectively. As applications…
We propose a novel dynamically weighted inertial forward-backward algorithm (DWIFOB) for solving structured monotone inclusion problems. The scheme exploits the globally convergent forward-backward algorithm with deviations in [26] as the basis and combines it with the extrapolation technique used in Anderson acceleration to improve local convergence. We also present a globally convergent primal-dual variant of DWIFOB and numerically compare its performance to the primal-dual method of Chambolle-Pock and a Tikhonov regularized version of Anderson acceleration applied to the same problem. In al…
We introduce a generalized forward-backward splitting method with penalty term for solving monotone inclusion problems involving the sum of a finite number of maximally monotone operators and the normal cone to the nonempty set of zeros of another maximal monotone operator. We show weak ergodic convergence of the generated sequence of iterates to a solution of the considered monotone inclusion problem, provided the condition corresponded to the Fitzpatrick function of the operator describing the set of the normal cone is fulfilled. Under strong monotonicity of an operator, we show strong conve…
The proximal extrapolated gradient method \cite{Malitsky18a} is an extension of the projected reflected gradient method \cite{Malitsky15}. Both methods were proposed for solving the classic variational inequalities. In this paper, we investigate the projected reflected gradient method, in the general setting, for solving monotone inclusions involving Lipschitzian operators. As a result, we obtain a simple method for finding a zero point of the sum of two monotone operators where one of them is Lipschizian. We also show that one can improve the range of the stepsize of this method for the case …
We establish the convergence of the forward-backward splitting algorithm based on Bregman distances for the sum of two monotone operators in reflexive Banach spaces. Even in Euclidean spaces, the convergence of this algorithm has so far been proved only in the case of minimization problems. The proposed framework features Bregman distances that vary over the iterations and a novel assumption on the single-valued operator that captures various properties scattered in the literature. In the minimization setting, we obtain rates that are sharper than existing ones.
In this paper we focus on the convergence analysis of the forward-backward splitting method for solving nonsmooth optimization problems in Hilbert spaces when the objective function is the sum of two convex functions. Assuming that one of the functions is Fréchet differentiable and using two new linesearches, the weak convergence is established without any Lipschitz continuity assumption on the gradient. Furthermore, we obtain many complexity results of cost values at the iterates when the stepsizes are bounded below by a positive constant.
In this paper, we study the nonexpansive properties of a generalized forward-backward splitting (G-FBS) operator, particularly under the setting of degenerate metric, from which follow the convergence results in terms of degenerate metric of the associated fixed-point iterations. The descent lemma and sufficient decrease property are also extended to degenerate case. It is further shown that the G-FBS operator provides a simplifying and unifying framework to model and analyze a great variety of operator splitting algorithms, many existing results are exactly recovered or relaxed from our gener…
We consider the problem of solving dual monotone inclusions involving sums of composite parallel-sum type operators. A feature of this work is to exploit explicitly the cocoercivity of some of the operators appearing in the model. Several splitting algorithms recently proposed in the literature are recovered as special cases.
We propose a splitting algorithm for solving a system of composite monotone inclusions formulated in the form of the extended set of solutions in real Hilbert spaces. The resluting algorithm is a an extension of the algorithm in [4]. The weak convergence of the algorithm proposed is proved. Applications to minimization problems is demonstrated.

We extend the Malitsky-Tam forward-reflected-backward (FRB) splitting method for inclusion problems of monotone operators to nonconvex minimization problems. By assuming the generalized concave Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz (KL) property of a quadratic regularization of the objective, we show that the FRB method converges globally to a stationary point of the objective and enjoys finite length property. The sharpness of our approach is guaranteed by virtue of the exact modulus associated with the generalized concave KL property. Numerical experiments suggest that FRB is competitive compared to the Dougl…
In this paper, we propose and study the asymptotic convergence and nonasymptotic global convergence rates (iteration-complexity) of an inertial under-relaxed version of the relative-error hybrid proximal extragradient (HPE) method for solving monotone inclusion problems. We analyze the proposed method under more flexible assumptions than existing ones on the extrapolation and relative-error parameters. As applications, we propose and/or study inertial under-relaxed forward-backward and Tseng's modified forward-backward type methods for solving structured monotone inclusions.
We propose and study a weakly convergent variant of the forward--backward algorithm for solving structured monotone inclusion problems. Our algorithm features a per-iteration deviation vector which provides additional degrees of freedom. The only requirement on the deviation vector to guarantee convergence is that its norm is bounded by a quantity that can be computed online. This approach provides great flexibility and opens up for the design of new and improved forward--backward-based algorithms, while retaining global convergence guarantees. These guarantees include linear convergence of ou…
This paper introduces the generalized forward-backward splitting algorithm for minimizing convex functions of the form $F + \sum_{i=1}^n G_i$, where $F$ has a Lipschitz-continuous gradient and the $G_i$'s are simple in the sense that their Moreau proximity operators are easy to compute. While the forward-backward algorithm cannot deal with more than $n = 1$ non-smooth function, our method generalizes it to the case of arbitrary $n$. Our method makes an explicit use of the regularity of $F$ in the forward step, and the proximity operators of the $G_i$'s are applied in parallel in the backward s…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of a stochastic version of the forward-backward splitting algorithm for finding a zero of the sum of a maximally monotone set-valued operator and a cocoercive operator in Hilbert spaces. Our general setting features stochastic approximations of the cocoercive operator and stochastic perturbations in the evaluation of the resolvents of the set-valued operator. In addition, relaxations and not necessarily vanishing proximal parameters are allowed. Weak and strong almost sure convergence properties of the iterates is established under mild conditions on the …
The backward-backward algorithm is a tool for finding minima of a regularization of the sum of two convex functions in Hilbert spaces. We generalize this setting to Hadamard spaces and prove the convergence of an error-tolerant version of the backward-backward method.
In this paper, we propose and study several strongly convergent versions of the forward-reflected-backward splitting method of Malitsky and Tam for finding a zero of the sum of two monotone operators in a real Hilbert space. Our proposed methods only require one forward evaluation of the single-valued operator and one backward evaluation of the set-valued operator at each iteration; a feature that is absent in many other available strongly convergent splitting methods in the literature. We also develop inertial versions of our methods and strong convergence results are obtained for these metho…
We study the variable metric forward-backward splitting algorithm for convex minimization problems without the standard assumption of the Lipschitz continuity of the gradient. In this setting, we prove that, by requiring only mild assumptions on the smooth part of the objective function and using several types of line search procedures for determining either the gradient descent stepsizes, or the relaxation parameters, one still obtains weak convergence of the iterates and convergence in the objective function values. Moreover, the $o(1/k)$ convergence rate in the function values is obtained i…
We consider aggregative games with affine coupling constraints, where agents have partial information on the aggregate value and can only communicate with neighbouring agents. We propose a single-layer distributed algorithm that reaches a variational generalized Nash equilibrium, under constant step sizes. The algorithm works on a single timescale, i.e., does not require multiple communication rounds between agents before updating their action. The convergence proof leverages an invariance property of the aggregate estimates and relies on a forward-backward splitting for two preconditioned ope…
In this paper, based on a double inertial extrapolation steps strategy and relaxation techniques, we introduce a new Tseng splitting method with double inertial extrapolation steps and self-adaptive step sizes for solving monotone inclusion problems in real Hilbert spaces. Finally, several numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the performance and theoretical outcomes of our algorithm.
We propose and analyze the convergence of a novel stochastic forward-backward splitting algorithm for solving monotone inclusions given by the sum of a maximal monotone operator and a single-valued maximal monotone cocoercive operator. This latter framework has a number of interesting special cases, including variational inequalities and convex minimization problems, while stochastic approaches are practically relevant to account for perturbations in the data. The algorithm we propose is a stochastic extension of the classical deterministic forward-backward method, and is obtained considering …
For the inclusion problem involving two maximal monotone operators, under the metric subregularity of the composite operator, we derive the linear convergence of the generalized proximal point algorithm and several splitting algorithms, which include the over-relaxed forward-backward splitting algorithm, the generalized Douglas-Rachford splitting algorithm and Davis' three-operator splitting algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this linear convergence condition is weaker than the existing ones that almost all require the strong monotonicity of the composite operator. Withal, we give some s…
A parallel splitting method is proposed for solving systems of coupled monotone inclusions in Hilbert spaces. Convergence is established for a wide class of coupling schemes. Unlike classical alternating algorithms, which are limited to two variables and linear coupling, our parallel method can handle an arbitrary number of variables as well as nonlinear coupling schemes. The breadth and flexibility of the proposed framework is illustrated through applications in the areas of evolution inclusions, dynamical games, signal recovery, image decomposition, best approximation, network flows, and var…
In this paper, we propose a multi-step inertial Forward--Backward splitting algorithm for minimizing the sum of two non-necessarily convex functions, one of which is proper lower semi-continuous while the other is differentiable with a Lipschitz continuous gradient. We first prove global convergence of the scheme with the help of the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property. Then, when the non-smooth part is also partly smooth relative to a smooth submanifold, we establish finite identification of the latter and provide sharp local linear convergence analysis. The proposed method is illustrated on a few p…
In this paper we provide a splitting method for finding a zero of the sum of a maximally monotone operator, a lipschitzian monotone operator, and a normal cone to a closed vectorial subspace of a real Hilbert space. The problem is characterized by a simpler monotone inclusion involving only two operators: the partial inverse of the maximally monotone operator with respect to the vectorial subspace and a suitable lipschitzian monotone operator. By applying the Tseng's method in this context we obtain a splitting algorithm that exploits the whole structure of the original problem and generalizes…
In this work, we study resolvent splitting algorithms for solving composite monotone inclusion problems. The objective of these general problems is finding a zero in the sum of maximally monotone operators composed with linear operators. Our main contribution is establishing the first primal-dual splitting algorithm for composite monotone inclusions with minimal lifting. Specifically, the proposed scheme reduces the dimension of the product space where the underlying fixed point operator is defined, in comparison to other algorithms, without requiring additional evaluations of the resolvent op…
This paper is about a set-based computing method for solving a general class of two-player zero-sum Stackelberg differential games. We assume that the game is modeled by a set of coupled nonlinear differential equations, which can be influenced by the control inputs of the players. Here, each of the players has to satisfy their respective state and control constraints or loses the game. The main contribution is a backward-forward reachable set splitting scheme, which can be used to derive numerically tractable conservative approximations of such two player games. In detail, we introduce a nove…
We propose a primal-dual splitting algorithm for solving monotone inclusions involving a mixture of sums, linear compositions, and parallel sums of set-valued and Lipschitzian operators. An important feature of the algorithm is that the Lipschitzian operators present in the formulation can be processed individually via explicit steps, while the set-valued operators are processed individually via their resolvents. In addition, the algorithm is highly parallel in that most of its steps can be executed simultaneously. This work brings together and notably extends various types of structured monot…
In this paper, based on inertial and Tseng's ideas, we propose two projection-based algorithms to solve a monotone inclusion problem in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. Solution theorems of strong convergence are obtained under the certain conditions. Some numerical experiments are presented to illustrate that our algorithms are efficient than the existing results.
In this article we provide a splitting method for solving monotone inclusions in a real Hilbert space involving four operators: a maximally monotone, a monotone-Lipschitzian, a cocoercive, and a monotone-continuous operator. The proposed method takes advantage of the intrinsic properties of each operator, generalizing the forward-back-half forward splitting and the Tseng's algorithm with line-search. At each iteration, our algorithm defines the step-size by using a line search in which the monotone-Lipschitzian and the cocoercive operators need only one activation. We also derive a method for …
In this paper, we analyze the iteration-complexity of Generalized Forward--Backward (GFB) splitting algorithm, as proposed in \cite{gfb2011}, for minimizing a large class of composite objectives $f + \sum_{i=1}^n h_i$ on a Hilbert space, where $f$ has a Lipschitz-continuous gradient and the $h_i$'s are simple (\ie their proximity operators are easy to compute). We derive iteration-complexity bounds (pointwise and ergodic) for the inexact version of GFB to obtain an approximate solution based on an easily verifiable termination criterion. Along the way, we prove complexity bounds for relaxed an…
We propose and analyze the convergence of a novel stochastic algorithm for solving monotone inclusions that are the sum of a maximal monotone operator and a monotone, Lipschitzian operator. The propose algorithm requires only unbiased estimations of the Lipschitzian operator. We obtain the rate $\mathcal{O}(log(n)/n)$ in expectation for the strongly monotone case, as well as almost sure convergence for the general case. Furthermore, in the context of application to convex-concave saddle point problems, we derive the rate of the primal-dual gap. In particular, we also obtain $\mathcal{O}(1/n)$ …
In this work we study a constrained monotone inclusion involving the normal cone to a closed vector subspace and a priori information on primal solutions. We model this information by imposing that solutions belongs to the fixed point set of an averaged nonexpansive mapping. We characterize the solutions using an auxiliary inclusion that involves the partial inverse operator. Then, we propose the primal-dual partial inverse splitting and we prove its weak convergence to a solution of the inclusion, generalizing several methods in the literature. The efficiency of the proposed method is illustr…
We consider the problem of reconstructing an infinite set of sparse, finite-dimensional vectors, that share a common sparsity pattern, from incomplete measurements. This is in contrast to the work [17], where the single vector signal can be infinite-dimensional, and [28], which extends the aforementioned work to the joint sparse recovery of finite number of infinite-dimensional vectors. In our case, to take account of the joint sparsity and promote the coupling of nonvanishing components, we employ a convex relaxation approach with mixed norm penalty $\ell_{2,1}$. This paper discusses the comp…
In this paper we propose a resolvent splitting with minimal lifting for finding a zero of the sum of $n\ge 2$ maximally monotone operators involving the composition with a linear bounded operator. The resolvent of each monotone operator, the linear operator, and its adjoint are computed exactly once in the proposed algorithm. In the case when the linear operator is the identity, we recover the resolvent splitting with minimal lifting developed in Malitsky-Tam (2021). We also derive a new resolvent splitting for solving the composite monotone inclusion in the case $n=2$ with minimal $1-$fold li…
