Hierarchical structure formation implies that the number of subhalos within a dark matter halo depends not only on halo mass, but also on the formation history of the halo. This dependence on the formation history, which is highly correlated with halo concentration, can account for the super-Poissonian scatter in subhalo occupation at a fixed halo mass that has been previously measured in simulations. Here we propose a model to predict the subhalo abundance function for individual host halos, that incorporates both halo mass and concentration. We combine results of cosmological simulations with a new suite of zoom-in simulations of Milky Way-mass halos to calibrate our model. We show the model can successfully reproduce the mean and the scatter of subhalo occupation in these simulations. The implications of this correlation between subhalo abundance and halo concentration are further investigated. We also discuss cases in which inferences about halo properties can be affected if this correlation between subhalo abundance and halo concentration is ignored; in these cases our model would give a more accurate inference. We propose that with future deep surveys, satellite occupation in the low-mass regime can be used to verify the existence of halo assembly bias.
Dark matter haloes are formed through hierarchical mergers of smaller haloes in large-scale cosmic environments, and thus anisotropic subhalo accretion through cosmic filaments have some impacts on halo structures. Recent studies using cosmological simulations have shown that the orientations of haloes correlate with the direction of cosmic filaments, and these correlations significantly depend on the halo mass. Using high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations, we quantified the strength of filamentary subhalo accretion for galaxy- and group-sized host haloes ($M_{\rm host}=5\times10^{1…
We carry out a detailed study of the orbital dynamics and structural evolution of over 6000 subhalos in the Via Lactea II simulation, from infall to present. By analyzing subhalos with masses down to m = 4e5 Msun, we find that lower mass subhalos, which are not strongly affected by dynamical friction, exhibit behaviors qualitatively different from those found previously for more massive ones. Furthermore, there is a clear trend of subhalos that fell into the host earlier being less concentrated. We show that the concentration at infall characterizes various aspects of subhalo evolution. In par…
We demonstrate that the perturbations of strongly lensed images by low-mass dark matter subhalos are significantly impacted by the concentration of the perturbing subhalo. For subhalo concentrations expected in $Λ$CDM, significant constraints on the concentration can be obtained at HST resolution for subhalos with masses larger than about $10^{10}M_\odot$. Constraints are also possible for lower mass subhalos, if their concentrations are higher than the expected scatter in CDM. We also find that the concentration of lower mass perturbers down to $\sim 10^8M_\odot$ can be well-constrained with …
The classification of dark matter halos as isolated hosts or subhalos is critical for our understanding of structure formation and the galaxy-halo connection. Most commonly, subhalos are defined to reside inside a spherical overdensity boundary such as the virial radius. The resulting host-subhalo relations depend sensitively on the somewhat arbitrary overdensity threshold, but the impact of this dependence is rarely quantified. The recently proposed splashback radius tends to be larger and to include more subhalos than even the largest spherical overdensity boundaries. We systematically inves…
The orbital parameters of dark matter (DM) subhaloes play an essential role in determining their mass-loss rates and overall spatial distribution within a host halo. Haloes in cosmological simulations grow by a combination of relatively smooth accretion and more violent mergers, and both processes will modify subhalo orbits. To isolate the impact of the smooth growth of the host halo from other relevant mechanisms, we study subhalo orbital evolution using numerical calculations in which subhaloes are modelled as massless particles orbiting in a time-varying spherical potential. We find that th…
Cold dark matter haloes consist of a relatively smooth dark matter component as well as a system of bound subhaloes. It is the prevailing practice to include all halo mass, including mass in subhaloes, in studies of halo density profiles. However, often in observational studies satellites are treated as having their own distinct dark matter density profiles in addition to the profile of the host. This difference makes comparisons between theoretical and observed results difficult. In this work we investigate density profiles of the smooth components of host haloes by excluding mass contained w…
We track subhalo orbits of galaxy and group sized halos in cosmological simulations. We identify filamentary structures around halos and we use these to define a sample of subhalos accreted from filaments as well as a control sample of subhalos accreted from other directions. We use these samples to study differences in satellite orbits produced by filamentary accretion. Our results depend on host halo mass. We find that for low masses, subhalos accreted from filaments show $\sim10\%$ shorter lifetimes compared to the control sample, they show a tendency towards more radial orbits, reach halo …
We model the luminosity-dependent projected and redshift-space two-point correlation functions (2PCFs) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 Main galaxy sample, using the halo occupation distribution (HOD) model and the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) model and its extension. All the models are built on the same high-resolution $N$-body simulations. We find that the HOD model generally provides the best performance in reproducing the clustering measurements in both projected and redshift spaces. The SHAM model with the same halo-galaxy relation for central and satellite galaxies (or dis…
We study the substructure population of Milky Way (MW)-mass halos in the $Λ$CDM cosmology using a novel procedure to extrapolate subhalo number statistics beyond the resolution limit of N-body simulations. The technique recovers the mean and the variance of the subhalo abundance, but not its spatial distribution. It extends the dynamic range over which precise statistical predictions can be made by the equivalent of performing a simulation with 50 times higher resolution, at no additional computational cost. We apply this technique to MW-mass halos, but it can easily be applied to halos of any…
Dark matter halos grow by hierarchical clustering as they merge together to produce ever larger structures. During these merger processes, the smaller halo can potentially survive as a subhalo of the larger halo, so a galaxy-scale halo today likely possesses a rich abundance of substructure. This substructure can greatly boost the rate of dark matter annihilation within the host halo, but the precise magnitude of this boost is clouded by uncertainty about the survival prospects of these subhalos. In particular, tidal forces gradually strip material from the subhalos, reducing their annihilatio…
We explore the impact of elastic, anisotropic, velocity-dependent dark matter (DM) self-interactions on the host halo and subhalos of Milky Way (MW)--mass systems. We consider a generic self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) model parameterized by the masses of a light mediator and the DM particle. The ratio of these masses, $w$, sets the velocity scale above which momentum transfer due to DM self-interactions becomes inefficient. We perform high-resolution zoom-in simulations of an MW-mass halo for values of $w$ that span scenarios in which self-interactions either between the host and its subha…
N-body simulations suggest that the substructures that survive inside dark matter haloes follow universal distributions in mass and radial number density. We demonstrate that a simple analytical model can explain these subhalo distributions as resulting from tidal stripping which increasingly reduces the mass of subhaloes with decreasing halo-centric distance. As a starting point, the spatial distribution of subhaloes of any given infall mass is shown to be largely indistinguishable from the overall mass distribution of the host halo. Using a physically motivated statistical description of the…
By linking galaxies in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to subhaloes in the ELUCID simulation, we investigate the relation between subhalo formation time and the galaxy properties, and the dependence of galaxy properties on the cosmic web environment. We find that central and satellite subhaloes have different formation time, where satellite subhaloes are older than central subhaloes at fixed mass. At fixed mass, the galaxy stellar-to-subhalo mass ratio is a good proxy of the subhalo formation time, and increases with the subhalo formation redshifts, especially for massive galaxies. The subhalo…
We present a study of unprecedented statistical power regarding the halo-to-halo variance of dark matter substructure. Using a combination of N-body simulations and a semi-analytical model, we investigate the variance in subhalo mass fractions and subhalo occupation numbers, with an emphasis on how these statistics scale with halo formation time. We demonstrate that the subhalo mass fraction, f_sub, is mainly a function of halo formation time, with earlier forming haloes having less substructure. At fixed formation redshift, the average f_sub is virtually independent of halo mass, and the mass…
We demonstrate how the properties of a galaxy depend on the mass of its host dark matter subhalo, using two independent models of galaxy formation. For the cases of stellar mass and black hole mass, the median property value displays a monotonic dependence on subhalo mass. The slope of the relation changes for subhalo masses for which heating by active galactic nuclei becomes important. The median property values are predicted to be remarkably similar for central and satellite galaxies. The two models predict considerable scatter around the median property value, though the size of the scatter…
The demographics of dark matter substructure depend sensitively on the nature of dark matter. Optimally leveraging this probe requires accurate theoretical predictions regarding the abundance of subhaloes. These predictions are hampered by artificial disruption in numerical simulations, by large halo-to-halo variance, and by the fact that the results depend on the baryonic physics of galaxy formation. In particular, numerical simulations have shown that the formation of a central disc can drastically reduce the abundance of substructure compared to a dark matter-only simulation, which has been…
We use six, high-resolution $Λ$CDM simulations of galaxy formation to study how emission from dark matter annihilation is affected by baryonic processes. These simulations produce isolated, disc-dominated galaxies with structure, stellar populations, and stellar and halo masses comparable to those of the Milky Way. They resolve dark matter structures with mass above $\sim 10^6$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ and are each available in both full-physics and dark-matter-only versions. In the full-physics case, formation of the stellar galaxy enhances annihilation radiation from the dominant smooth component of …
We study the population statistics of the surviving subhaloes of LCDM dark matter haloes using a set of very high resolution N-body simulations. These include both simulations of representative regions of the Universe and ultra-high resolution resimulations of individual dark matter haloes. We find that more massive haloes tend to have a larger mass fraction in subhaloes. For example, cluster size haloes typically have 7.5 percent of their mass within R200 in substructures of fractional mass larger than 1e-5, which is 25 percent higher than galactic haloes. There is, however, a large variance …
The analysis of cosmological galaxy surveys requires realistic simulations for their interpretation. Forward modelling is a powerful method to simulate galaxy clustering without the need for an underlying complex model. This approach requires fast cosmological simulations with a high resolution and large volume, to resolve small dark matter halos associated to single galaxies. In this work, we present fast halo and subhalo clustering simulations based on the Lagrangian perturbation theory code PINOCCHIO, which generates halos and merger trees. The subhalo progenitors are extracted from the mer…
Through numerical simulations, we study the dissolution timescale of the Ursa Minor cold stellar clump, due to the combination of phase-mixing and gravitational encounters with compact dark substructures in the halo of Ursa Minor. We compare two scenarios; one where the dark halo is made up by a smooth mass distribution of light particles and one where the halo contains 10% of its mass in the form of substructures (subhalos). In a smooth halo, the stellar clump survives for a Hubble time provided that the dark matter halo has a big core. In contrast, when the point-mass dark substructures are …
We present a new, semi-analytical model describing the evolution of dark matter subhaloes. The model uses merger trees constructed using the method of Parkinson et al. (2008) to describe the masses and redshifts of subhaloes at accretion, which are subsequently evolved using a simple model for the orbit-averaged mass loss rates. The model is extremely fast, treats subhaloes of all orders, accounts for scatter in orbital properties and halo concentrations, and uses a simple recipe to convert subhalo mass to maximum circular velocity. The model accurately reproduces the average subhalo mass and …
Based on galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and subhalos in the corresponding reconstructed region from the constrained simulation of ELUCID, we study the alignment of central galaxies relative to their host groups in the group catalog, as well as the alignment relative to the corresponding subhalos in the ELUCID simulation. Galaxies in observation are matched to dark matter subhalos in the ELUCID simulation using a novel neighborhood abundance matching method. In observation, the major axes of galaxies are found to be preferentially aligned to the major axes of their host group…
We present the measurements of the luminosity-dependent redshift-space three-point correlation functions (3PCFs) for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 Main galaxy sample. We compare the 3PCF measurements to the predictions from three different halo and subhalo models. One is the halo occupation distribution (HOD) model and the other two are extensions of the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) model by allowing the central and satellite galaxies to have different occupation distributions in the host halos and subhalos. Parameters in all the models are chosen to best describe the projected …
We present the Synthetic UniveRses For Surveys ({\sc surfs}) simulations, a set of N-body/Hydro simulations of the concordance $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter (\LCDM) cosmology. These simulations use Planck cosmology, contain up to 10 billion particles and sample scales & halo masses down to $1~$kpc & $10^8{\rm M}_\odot$. We identify and track haloes from $z=24$ to today using a state-of-the-art 6D halo finder and merger tree builder. We demonstrate that certain properties of halo merger trees are numerically converged for haloes composed of $\gtrsim100$ particles. Haloes smoothly grow in mass, $V_{\rm m…
In hierarchical structure formation, dark matter halos that merge with larger halos can persist as subhalos. These subhalos are likely hosts of visible galaxies. While the dense halo environment rapidly strips subhalos of their dark mass, the compact luminous material can remain intact for some time, making the correspondence of galaxies with severely stripped subhalos unclear. Many galaxy evolution models assume that satellite galaxies eventually merge with their central galaxy, but this ignores the possibility of satellite tidal disruption. We use a high-resolution $N$-body simulation of cos…
The predicted abundance and properties of the low-mass substructures embedded inside larger dark matter haloes differ sharply among alternative dark matter models. Too small to host galaxies themselves, these subhaloes may still be detected via gravitational lensing, or via perturbations of the Milky Way's globular cluster streams and its stellar disk. Here we use the Apostle cosmological simulations to predict the abundance and the spatial and velocity distributions of subhaloes in the range 10^6.5-10^8.5 solar masses inside haloes of mass ~ 10^12 solar masses in LCDM. Although these subhaloe…
We study the shapes of subhalo distributions from four dark-matter-only simulations of Milky Way type haloes. Comparing the shapes derived from the subhalo distributions at high resolution to those of the underlying dark matter fields we find the former to be more triaxial if theanalysis is restricted to massive subhaloes. For three of the four analysed haloes the increased triaxiality of the distributions of massive subhaloes can be explained by a systematic effect caused by the low number of objects. Subhaloes of the fourth halo show indications for anisotropic accretion via their strong tri…
Recent studies suggest that only three of the twelve brightest satellites of the Milky Way (MW) inhabit dark matter halos with maximum circular velocity, V_max, exceeding 30km/s. This is in apparent contradiction with the LCDM simulations of the Aquarius Project, which suggest that MW-sized halos should have at least 8 subhalos with V_max>30km/s. The absence of luminous satellites in such massive subhalos is thus puzzling and may present a challenge to the LCDM paradigm. We note, however, that the number of massive subhalos depends sensitively on the (poorly-known) virial mass of the Milky Way…
We introduce a new halo/subhalo finder, HIKER (a Halo fInder based on KERnel-shift algorithm), which takes advantage of a machine learning method -- the mean-shift algorithm combined with the Plummer kernel function, to effectively locate density peaks corresponding to halos/subhalos in density field. Based on these density peaks, dark matter halos are identified as spherical overdensity structures, and subhalos are bound substructures with boundaries at their tidal radius. By testing HIKER code with mock halos, we show that HIKER performs excellently in recovering input halo properties. Espec…
The free streaming motion of dark matter particles imprints a cutoff in the matter power spectrum and set the scale of the smallest dark matter halo. Recent cosmological $N$-body simulations have shown that the central density cusp is much steeper in haloes near the free streaming scale than in more massive haloes. Here, we study the abundance and structure of subhaloes near the free streaming scale at very high redshift using a suite of unprecedentedly large cosmological $N$-body simulations, over a wide range of the host halo mass. The subhalo abundance is suppressed strongly below the free …
With the ever increasing resolution of N-body simulations, accurate subhalo detection is becoming essential in the study of the formation of structure, the production of merger trees and the seeding of semi-analytic models. To investigate the state of halo finders, we compare two different approaches to detecting subhaloes; the first based on overdensities in a halo and the second being adaptive mesh refinement. A set of stable mock NFW dark matter haloes were produced and a subhalo was placed at different radii within a larger halo. SUBFIND (a Friends-of-Friends based finder) and AHF (an adap…
We discuss the properties of subhalos in cluster-size halos, using a high-resolution statistical sample: the Rhapsody simulations introduced in Wu et al. (2012). We demonstrate that the criteria applied to select subhalos have significant impact on the inferred properties of the sample, including the scatter in the number of subhalos, the correlation between the subhalo number and formation time, and the shape of subhalos' spatial distribution and velocity structure. We find that the number of subhalos, when selected using the peak maximum circular velocity in their histories (a property expec…
In two previous papers (Salvador-Solé 2012a,b), it was shown that: i) the typical structural and kinematic properties of haloes in (bottom-up) hierarchical cosmologies endowed with random Gaussian density perturbations of dissipationless collisionless dark matter emerge naturally from the typical properties of peaks in the primordial density field and ii) halo statistics are well described by the peak formalism. In the present paper, we use these results to model halo substructure. Specifically, making use of the peak formalism and the fact that accreting haloes evolve from the inside-out, we …
A prediction of the standard LCDM cosmology is that dark matter (DM) halos are teeming with numerous self-bound substructure, or subhalos. The precise properties of these subhalos represent important probes of the underlying cosmological model. We use data from Via Lactea II and ELVIS N-body simulations to learn about the structure of subhalos with masses 1e6 - 1e11 Msun/h. Thanks to a superb subhalo statistics, we study subhalo properties as a function of distance to host halo center and subhalo mass, and provide a set of fits that accurately describe the subhalo structure. We also investigat…
An analytical model is developed for the mass function of cold dark matter subhalos at the time of accretion and for the distribution of their accretion times. Our model is based on the model of Zhao et al. (2009) for the median assembly histories of dark matter halos, combined with a simple log-normal distribution to describe the scatter in the main-branch mass at a given time for halos of the same final mass. Our model is simple, and can be used to predict the un-evolved subhalo mass function, the mass function of subhalos accreted at a given time, the accretion-time distribution of subhalos…
We make use of two suits of ultra high resolution N-body simulations of individual dark matter haloes from the Phoenix and the Aquarius Projects to investigate systematics of assembly history of subhaloes in dark matter haloes differing by a factor of $1000$ in the halo mass. We have found that real progenitors which built up present day subhalo population are relatively more abundant for high mass haloes, in contrast to previous studies claiming a universal form independent of the host halo mass. That is mainly because of repeated counting of the 're-accreted' (progenitors passed through and …
The presence of an invisible substructure has previously been detected in the gravitational lens galaxy SDSSJ0946+1006 through its perturbation of the lensed images. Using flexible models for the main halo and the subhalo perturbation to fit the lensed images, we demonstrate that the subhalo has an extraordinarily high central density and steep density slope. The inferred concentration for the subhalo is well above the expected scatter in concentrations for $Λ$CDM halos of similar mass. We robustly infer the subhalo's projected mass within 1 kpc to be $\sim 2$-$3.7\times 10^9$M$_\odot$ at $>$9…
In Paper I we used the CUSP formalism to derive from first principles and no single free parameter the accurate abundance and radial distribution of both diffuse DM (dDM) and subhaloes accreted onto haloes and their progenitors at all previous times. Here we use those results as initial conditions for the monitoring of the evolution of subhaloes and dDM within the host haloes. Specifically, neglecting dynamical friction, we accurately calculate the effects of repetitive tidal stripping and heating on subhaloes as they orbit inside the host halo and infer the amount of dDM and subsubhaloes they…
Motivated by a recently found interesting property of the dark halo surface density within a radius, $r_{\rm max}$, giving the maximum circular velocity, $V_{\rm max}$, we investigate it for dark halos of the Milky Way's and Andromeda's dwarf satellites based on cosmological simulations. We select and analyze the simulated subhalos associated with Milky Way-sized dark halos and find that the values of their surface densities, $Σ_{V_{\rm max}}$, are in good agreement with those for the observed dwarf spheroidal satellites even without employing any fitting procedures. This implies that this sur…
We calculate the orbital angular momentum of dark matter subhaloes in the Aquarius simulations of cold dark matter galactic haloes. We calculate the orientation of their angular momentum relative to that of the spin vector of their host halo and find a variety of different configurations. All six Aquarius haloes contain statistically significant populations of subhalo orbits that are aligned with the main halo spin. All haloes posses a population of subhaloes that rotates in the same direction as the main halo and three of them possess, in addition, a population that rotates in the opposite di…
In this paper, we use two hydrodynamic simulations to study the barycentre offsets $r_{\rm off}$ between the entire halo and the gas or dark matter subhalo with largest overdensity. We restrict our analysis to those halos with large rescaled offsets, i.e. $r_{\rm off}/r_{200}\gtrsim 0.05$. The halos which are less massive and at higher redshifts are more likely to have larger $r_{\rm off}/r_{200}$. The 3D velocity dispersion of the subhalos with largest overdensity is found to have a similar mass and redshift dependence as $r_{\rm off}/r_{200}$. We also find that the gas subhalos with maximum …
We develop a comprehensive and flexible model for the connection between satellite galaxies and dark matter subhalos in dark matter-only zoom-in simulations of Milky Way (MW)--mass host halos. We systematically identify the physical and numerical uncertainties in the galaxy--halo connection and simulations underlying our method, including (i) the influence of host halo properties; (ii) the relationship between satellite luminosities and subhalo properties, including the effects of reionization; (iii) the relationship between satellite and subhalo locations; (iv) the relationship between satell…
The distribution of galaxies displays anisotropy on different scales and it is often referred as galaxy alignment. To understand the origin of galaxy alignments on small scales, one must investigate how galaxies were accreted in the early universe and quantify their primordial anisotropic at the time of accretion. In this paper we use N-body simulations to investigate the accretion of dark matter subhaloes, focusing on their alignment with the host halo shape and the orientation of mass distribution on large scale, defined using the hessian matrix of the density field. The large/small (e1/e3) …
With this Paper we complete a comprehensive study of substructure in dark matter haloes. In Paper I we derived the radial distribution and mass function (MF) of accreted subhaloes (scaled to the radius and mass of the host halo) and showed they are essentially universal. This is not the case, however, for those of stripped subhaloes, which depend on halo mass and assembly history. In Paper II we derived these latter properties in the simplest case of purely accreting haloes. Here we extend the study to ordinary haloes having suffered major mergers. After showing that all the properties of subs…
Dark matter subhalos are the remnants of (incomplete) halo mergers. Identifying them and establishing their evolutionary links in the form of merger trees is one of the most important applications of cosmological simulations. The Hierachical Bound-Tracing (HBT) code identifies halos as they form and tracks their evolution as they merge, simultaneously detecting subhalos and building their merger trees. Here we present a new implementation of this approach, HBT+, that is much faster, more user friendly, and more physically complete than the original code. Applying HBT+ to cosmological simulatio…
