We study the Cauchy problem for the semilinear nonautonomous parabolic equation $u_t=\mathcal{A}(t)u+ψ(t,u)$ in $[s,τ]\times {{\mathbb R}^d}$, $τ> s $, in the spaces $C_b([s, τ]\times{{\mathbb R}^d})$ and in $L^p((s, τ)\times{{\mathbb R}^d}, ν)$. Here $ν$ is a Borel measure defined via a tight evolution system of measures for the evolution operator $G(t,s)$ associated to the family of time depending second order uniformly elliptic operators $\mathcal{A}(t)$. Sufficient conditions for existence in the large and stability of the null solution are also given in both $C_b$ and $L^p$ contexts. The novelty with respect to the literature is that the coefficients of the operators $\mathcal{A}(t)$ are allowed to be unbounded.
We consider a class of second order linear nonautonomous parabolic equations in R^d with time periodic unbounded coefficients. We give sufficient conditions for the evolution operator G(t,s) be compact in C_b(R^d) for t>s, and describe the asymptotic behavior of G(t,s)f as t-s goes to infinity in terms of a family of measures mu_s, s in R, solution of the associated Fokker-Planck equation.
Using time dependent Lyapunov functions, we prove pointwise upper bounds for the heat kernels of some nonautonomous Kolmogorov operators with possibly unbounded drift and diffusion coefficients and a possibly unbounded potential term.
In this work we study permanence of hyperbolicity for autonomous differential equations under nonautonomous random/stochastic perturbations. For the linear case, we study robustness and existence of exponential dichotomies for nonautonomous random dynamical systems. Next, we establish a result on the persistence of hyperbolic equilibria for nonlinear differential equations. We show that for each nonautonomous random perturbation of an autonomous semilinear problem with a hyperbolic equilibrium there exists a bounded \textit{random hyperbolic solution} for the associated nonlinear nonautonomous…
We study the Cauchy problem associated to a family of nonautonomous semilinear equations in the space of bounded and continuous functions over R^d and in L^p-spaces with respect to tight evolution systems of measures. Here, the linear part of the equation is a nonautonomous second-order elliptic operator with unbounded coefficients defined in IxR^d, (I being a right-halfline). To the above Cauchy problem we associate a nonlinear evolution operator, which we study in detail, proving some summability improving properties. We also study the stability of the null solution to the Cauchy problem.
We study a class of elliptic operators $A$ with unbounded coefficients defined in $I\times\CR^d$ for some unbounded interval $I\subset\CR$. We prove that, for any $s\in I$, the Cauchy problem $u(s,\cdot)=f\in C_b(\CR^d)$ for the parabolic equation $D_tu=Au$ admits a unique bounded classical solution $u$. This allows to associate an evolution family $\{G(t,s)\}$ with $A$, in a natural way. We study the main properties of this evolution family and prove gradient estimates for the function $G(t,s)f$. Under suitable assumptions, we show that there exists an evolution system of measures for $\{G(t,…
Using time dependent Lyapunov functions, we prove pointwise upper bounds for the heat kernels of some nonautonomous Kolmogorov operators with possibly unbounded drift and diffusion coefficients.
We classify stable and finite Morse index solutions to general semilinear elliptic equations posed in Euclidean space of dimension at most 10, or in some unbounded domains.
We consider a class of nonautonomous elliptic operators ${\mathscr A}$ with unbounded coefficients defined in $[0,T]\times\R^N$ and we prove optimal Schauder estimates for the solution to the parabolic Cauchy problem $D_tu={\mathscr A}u+f$, $u(0,\cdot)=g$.
We study a class of nonautonomous, linear, parabolic equations with unbounded coefficients on $\mathbb R^{d}$ which admit an evolution system of measures. It is shown that the solutions of these equations converge to constant functions as $t\to+\infty$. We further establish the uniqueness of the tight evolution system of measures and treat the case of converging coefficients.
This paper deals with a class of singularly perturbed nonlinear elliptic problems $(P_\e)$ with subcritical nonlinearity. The coefficient of the linear part is assumed to concentrate in a point of the domain, as $\e\to 0$, and the domain is supposed to be unbounded and with unbounded boundary. Domains that enlarge at infinity, and whose boundary flattens or shrinks at infinity, are considered. It is proved that in such domains problem $(P_\e)$ has at least 2 solutions.
We consider a class of nonautonomous second order parabolic equations with unbounded coefficients defined in $I\times\R^d$, where $I$ is a right-halfline. We prove logarithmic Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities with respect to an associated evolution system of measures $\{μ_t: t \in I\}$, and we deduce hypercontractivity and asymptotic behaviour results for the evolution operator $G(t,s)$.
We introduce several notions of generalised principal eigenvalue for a linear elliptic operator on a general unbounded domain, under boundary condition of the oblique derivative type. We employ these notions in the stability analysis of semilinear problems. Some of the properties we derive are new even in the Dirichlet or in the whole space cases. As an application, we show the validity of the hair-trigger effect for the Fisher-KPP equation on general, uniformly smooth domains.
In this work, we study continuity and topological structural stability of attractors for nonautonomous random differential equations obtained by small bounded random perturbations of autonomous semilinear problems. First, we study existence and permanence of unstable sets of hyperbolic solutions. Then, we use this to establish lower semicontinuity of nonautonomous random attractors and to show that the gradient structure persists under nonautonomous random perturbations. Finally, we apply the abstract results in a stochastic differential equation and in a damped wave equation with a perturbati…
Under suitable conditions, we obtain some characterization of supercontractivity, ultraboundedness and ultracontractivity of the evolution operator $G(t,s)$ associated to a class of nonautonomous second order parabolic equations with unbounded coefficients defined in $I\times\R^d$, where $I$ is a right-halfline. For this purpose, we establish an Harnack type estimate for $G(t,s)$ and a family of logarithmic Sobolev inequalities with respect to the unique tight evolution system of measures $\{μ_t: t \in I\}$ associated to $G(t,s)$. Sufficient conditions for the supercontractivity, ultraboundedn…
We consider stable solutions of a semilinear elliptic equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. A classical result of Casten, Holland [20] and Matano [44] states that all stable solutions are constant in convex bounded domains. In this paper, we examine whether this result extends to unbounded convex domains. We give a positive answer for stable non-degenerate solutions, and for stable solutions if the domain $Ω$ further satisfies $Ω$ $\cap$ {|x| $\le$ R} = O(R^2), when R $\rightarrow$ +$\infty$. If the domain is a straight cylinder, an additional natural assumption is needed. The…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior as $x_1\to+\infty$ of solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in quarter- or half-spaces, for which the value at $x_1=0$ is given. We prove the uniqueness and characterize the one-dimensional or constant profile of the solutions at infinity. To do so, we use two different approaches. The first one is a pure PDE approach and it is based on the maximum principle, the sliding method and some new Liouville type results for elliptic equations in the half-space or in the whole space~$\mathbb{R}^N$. The second one is based on the theory of dynamical …
Consider the nonautonomous semilinear evolution equation of type: $(\star) \; u'(t)=A(t)u(t)+f(t,u(t)), \; t \in \mathbb{R},$ where $ A(t), \ t\in \mathbb{R} $ is a family of closed linear operators in a Banach space $X$, the nonlinear term $f$, acting on some real interpolation spaces, is assumed to be almost periodic just in a weak sense (i.e. in Stepanov sense) with respect to $t$ and Lipschitzian in bounded sets with respect to the second variable. We prove the existence and uniqueness of almost periodic solutions in the strong sense (Bohr sense) for equation $ (\star) $ using the exponent…
We investigate qualitative properties of positive singular solutions of some elliptic systems in bounded and unbounded domains. We deduce symmetry and monotonicity properties via the moving plane procedure. Moreover, in the unbounded case, we study some cooperative elliptic systems involving critical nonlinearities in $\mathbb{R}^n$.
We consider evolution operators $G(t,s)$ associated to a class of nonautonomous elliptic operators with unbounded coefficients, in the space of bounded and continuous functions over $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove some new pointwise estimates for the spatial derivatives of the function $G(t,s)f$, when $f$ is bounded and continuous or much smoother. We then use these estimates to prove smoothing effects of the evolution operator in $L^p$-spaces. Finally, we show how pointwise gradient estimates have been used in the literature to study the asymptotic behaviour of the evolution operator and to prove su…
Given a class of nonautonomous elliptic operators $\A(t)$ with unbounded coefficients, defined in $\overline{I \times \Om}$ (where $I$ is a right-halfline or $I=\R$ and $\Om\subset \Rd$ is possibly unbounded), we prove existence and uniqueness of the evolution operator associated to $\A(t)$ in the space of bounded and continuous functions, under Dirichlet and first order, non tangential homogeneous boundary conditions. Some qualitative properties of the solutions, the compactness of the evolution operator and some uniform gradient estimates are then proved.
In this work, we prove the existence and uniqueness of $μ$-pseudo almost automorphic solutions for some class of semilinear nonautonomous evolution equations of the form: $ u'(t)=A(t)u(t)+f(t,u(t)),\; t\in\mathbb{R} $ where $ (A(t))_{t\in \mathbb{R}} $ is a family of closed densely defined operators acting on a Banach space $X$ that generates a strongly continuous evolution family which has an exponential dichotomy on $\mathbb{R}$. The nonlinear term $f: \mathbb{R} \times X \longrightarrow X$ is just $μ$-pseudo almost automorphic in Stepanov sense in $t$ and Lipshitzian with respect to the sec…
This note deals with Bounded-Input-Bounded-Output (BIBO) stability for semilinear infinite-dimensional dynamical systems allowing for boundary control and boundary observation. We give sufficient conditions that guarantee BIBO stability based on Lipschitz conditions with respect to interpolation spaces. Our results can be applied to guarantee feasibility of funnel control for coupled ODE-PDE systems, as shown by means of an example from chemical engineering.
In this paper, we study the existence of nonnegative weak solutions to (E) $ (-Δ)^αu+h(u)=ν$ in a general regular domain $Ω$, which vanish in $\R^N\setminusΩ$, where $(-Δ)^α$ denotes the fractional Laplacian with $α\in(0,1)$, $ν$ is a nonnegative Radon measure and $h:\mathbb{R}_+\to\mathbb{R}_+$ is a continuous nondecreasing function satisfying a subcritical integrability condition. Furthermore, we analyze properties of weak solution $u_k$ to $(E)$ with $Ω=\mathbb{R}^N$, $ν=kδ_0$ and $h(s)=s^p$, where $k>0$, $p\in(0,\frac{N}{N-2α})$ and $δ_0$ denotes Dirac mass at the origin. Finally, we show …
We consider a model for the propagation of a driven interface through a random field of obstacles. The evolution equation, commonly referred to as the Quenched Edwards-Wilkinson model, is a semilinear parabolic equation with a constant driving term and random nonlinearity to model the influence of the obstacle field. For the case of isolated obstacles centered on lattice points and admitting a random strength with exponential tails, we show that the interface propagates with a finite velocity for sufficiently large driving force. The proof consists of a discretization of the evolution equation…
We consider a class of nonautonomous parabolic first-order coupled systems in the Lebesgue space $L^p({\mathbb R}^d;{\mathbb R}^m)$, $(d,m \ge 1)$ with $p\in [1,+\infty)$. Sufficient conditions for the associated evolution operator ${\bf G}(t,s)$ in $C_b({\mathbb R}^d;{\mathbb R}^m)$ to extend to a strongly continuous operator in $L^p({\mathbb R}^d;{\mathbb R}^m)$ are given. Some $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates are also established together with $L^p$ gradient estimates.
We prove a Hopf bifurcation theorem in Hilbert spaces for abstract semilinear equations, which improves a classical result by Crandall and Rabinowitz in the case where basic spaces are Hilbert spaces. Actually, our theorem does not need any compactness conditions, which leads to wider applications. In particular, our theorem can be applied to semilinear equations in unbounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$.
We consider the initial value problem for the semilinear plate equation with nonlocal nonlinearity. We prove the existence of global attractor and then establish the regularity and finite dimensionality of this attractor.
We consider a semilinear Robin problem driven by the Laplacian plus an indefinite and unbounded potential. The reaction term is a Carathéodory function which is resonant with respect to any nonprincipal eigenvalue both at $\pm \infty$ and 0. Using a variant of the reduction method, we show that the problem has at least two nontrivial smooth solutions.
In this paper we consider nonautonomous elliptic operators ${\mathcal A}$ with nontrivial potential term defined in $I\times\mathbb R^d$, where $I$ is a right-halfline (possibly $I=\mathbb R$). We prove that we can associate an evolution operator $(G(t,s))$ with ${\mathcal A}$ in the space of all bounded and continuous functions on $\mathbb R^d$. We also study the compactness properties of the operator $G(t,s)$. Finally, we provide sufficient conditions guaranteeing that each operator $G(t,s)$ preserves the usual $L^p$-spaces and $C_0(\mathbb R^d)$.
We derive a blow-up dichotomy for positive solutions of fractional semilinear heat equations on the whole space. That is, within a certain class of convex source terms, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition on the source for all positive solutions to become unbounded in finite time. Moreover, we show that this condition is equivalent to blow-up of all positive solutions of a closely-related scalar ordinary differential equation.
We determine sufficient conditions for the occurrence of a pointwise gradient estimate for the evolution operators associated to nonautonomous second order parabolic operators with (possibly) unbounded coefficients. Moreover we exhibit a class of operators which satisfy our conditions.
We establish the maximal regularity for nonautonomous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators in $L^p$-spaces with respect to a family of invariant measures, where $p\in (1,+\infty)$. This result follows from the maximal $L^p$-regularity for a class of elliptic operators with unbounded, time-dependent drift coefficients and potentials acting on $L^p(\R^N)$ with Lebesgue measure.
We consider a semilinear elliptic problem in an annulus of R^N, with N>1. Recent results ensure that there exists a sequence p_k of exponents of the nonlinear term at which a nonradial bifurcation from the radial solution occurs. Exploiting the properties of O(N-1)-invariant spherical harmonics, we introduce two suitable cones K^1 and $K^2$ of O(N-1)-invariant functions that allow to separate the branches of bifurcating solutions from the others, getting the unboundedness of these branches.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a locally finite connected weighted graph, and $Ω$ be an unbounded subset of $V$. Using Rothe's method, we study the existence of solutions for the semilinear heat equation $\partial_tu+|u|^{p-1}\cdot u=Δu~(p\ge1)$ and the parabolic variational inequality \begin{eqnarray*} \int_{Ω^\circ} \partial_tu\cdot(v-u)\,dμ\ge \int_{Ω^\circ}(Δu+f)\cdot(v-u)\,dμ\qquad\mbox{for any }v\in \mathcal{H}, \end{eqnarray*} where $\mathcal{H}=\{u\in W^{1,2}(V):u=0\mbox{ on }V\backslashΩ^\circ\}$.
A semilinear singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions is considered in a convex unbounded sector. The singular perturbation parameter is arbitrarily small, and the "reduced equation" may have multiple solutions. A formal asymptotic expansion for a possible solution is constructed that involves boundary and corner layer functions. For this asymptotic expansion, we establish certain inequalities that are used in a subsequent paper to construct sharp sub- and super-solutions and then establish the existence of a solution to a similar nonlinear elliptic p…
In this article we focus on inverse problems for a semilinear elliptic equation. We show that a potential $q$ in $L^{n/2+\varepsilon}$, $\varepsilon>0$, can be determined from the full and partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. This extends the results from [M. Lassas, T. Liimatainen, Y.-H. Lin, and M. Salo, Partial data inverse problems and simultaneous recovery of boundary and coefficients for semilinear elliptic equations, Rev. Mat. Iberoam. (2021)] where this is shown for Hölder continuous potentials. Also we show that when the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is restricted to one point on the boundary…
We study the $L^{p}$-solutions for the semilinear heat equation with unbounded coefficients and driven by a infinite dimensional fractional Brownian motion with self-similarity parameter $H > 1/2$. Existence and uniqueness of local mild solutions are showed.
Let $n\geq2$ and $ Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ be a Lipschitz wedge- like domain . We construct positive weak solutions of the problem $$Δu + u^p = 0 \quad\hbox{in}\, Ω,$$ which vanish in a suitable trace sense on $\partialΩ,$ but which are singular at prescribed "edge" of $Ω$ if $p$ is equal or slightly above a certain exponent $p_0>1$ which depends on $Ω.$ Moreover, in the case which $Ω$ is unbounded, the solutions have fast decay at infinity.
In this paper, we give positive answer to the open question raised in [E. Zuazua, Exponential decay for the semilinear wave equation with localized damping in unbounded domains. J. Math. Pures Appl., 70 (1991) 513--529] on the exponential decay of solutions for the semilinear plate equation with localized damping.
In this paper we prove symmetry results for classical solutions of semilinear cooperative elliptic systems in R^N, or in the exterior of a ball. We consider the case of fully coupled systems and nonlinearities which are either convex or have a convex derivative. The solutions are shown to be foliated Schwarz symmetric if a bound on their Morse index holds. As a consequence of the symmetry results we also obtain some nonexistence theorems.
Here we design boundary feedback stabilizers to unbounded trajectories, for semi-linear stochastic heat equation with cubic non-linearity. The feedback controller is linear, given in a simple explicit form and involves only the eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator. It is supported in a given open subset of the boundary of the domain. Via a rescaling argument, we transform the stochastic equation into a random deterministic one. Then, the simple form of the feedback, we propose here, allows to write the solution, of the random equation, in a mild formulation via a kernel. Appealing to a fixed…
This paper is interested in semilinear stochastic equations having unbounded nonlinear perturbations in the deterministic part and/or in the random part. Moreover, the linear part of these equations is governed by a not necessarily analytic semigroup. The main difficulty with these equations is how to define the concept of mild solutions due to the chosen type of unbounded perturbations. To overcome this problem, we first proved a regularity property of the stochastic convolution with respect to the domain of "admissible" unbounded linear operators (not necessarily closed or closable). This is…
We prove that, in a two-dimensional strip, a steady flow of an ideal incompressible fluid with no stationary point and tangential boundary conditions is a shear flow. The same conclusion holds for a bounded steady flow in a half-plane. The proofs are based on the study of the geometric properties of the streamlines of the flow and on one-dimensional symmetry results for solutions of some semilinear elliptic equations. Some related rigidity results of independent interest are also shown in n-dimensional slabs in any dimension n.
We consider a nonlinear eigenvalue problem under Robin boundary conditions in a domain with (possibly noncompact) smooth boundary. The problem involves a weighted p-Laplacian operator and subcritical nonlinearities satisfying Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz type conditions. Using Morse theory and a cohomological local splitting as in Degiovanni et al. [5], we prove the existence of a nontrivial weak solution for all (real) values of the eigenvalue parameter. Our result is new even in the semilinear case p = 2 and complements some recent results obtained in Autuori et al. [1].
In this paper we study the equation $-Δu+ρ^{-(α+2)}h(ρ^αu)=0$ in a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ where $ρ(x)=\textrm{dist}\,(x,\partial Ω)$, $α>0$ and $h$ is a non-decreasing function which satisfies Keller-Osserman condition. We introduce a condition on $h$ which implies that the equation is subcritical, i.e. the corresponding boundary value problem is well posed with respect to data given by finite measures. Under additional assumptions on $h$ we show that this condition is necessary as well as sufficient. We also discuss b.v. problems with data given by positive unbounded measures. Our results …
We discuss conditions for well-posedness of the scalar reaction-diffusion equation $u_{t}=Δu+f(u)$ equipped with Dirichlet boundary conditions where the initial data is unbounded. Standard growth conditions are juxtaposed with the no-blow-up condition $\int_{1}^{\infty}1/f(s) \d s=\infty$ that guarantees global solutions for the related ODE $\dot u=f(u)$. We investigate well-posedness of the toy PDE $u_{t}=f(u)$ in $L^{p}$ under this no-blow-up condition. An example is given of a source term $f$ and an initial condition $ψ\in L^{2}(0,1)$ such that $\int_{1}^{\infty}1/f(s)\d s=\infty$ and the t…
