This paper contributes to the analysis of the peripheral (point) spectrum of positive linear operators on Banach lattices. We show that, under appropriate growth and regularity conditions, the peripheral point spectrum of a positive operator is cyclic and that the corresponding eigenspaces fulfil a certain dimension estimate. A couple of examples demonstrates that some of our theorems are optimal. Our results on the peripheral point spectrum are then used to prove a sufficient condition for the peripheral spectrum of a positive operator to be cyclic; this generalizes theorems of Lotz and Scheffold.
If $T_t=\rme^{Zt}$ is a positive one-parameter contraction semigroup acting on $l^p(X)$ where $X$ is a countable set and $1\leq p <\infty$, then the peripheral point spectrum $P$ of $Z$ cannot contain any non-zero elements. The same holds for Feller semigroups acting on $L^p(X)$ if $X$ is locally compact.
Let $T$ denote a positive operator with spectral radius $1$ on, say, an $L^p$-space. A classical result in infinite dimensional Perron--Frobenius theory says that, if $T$ is irreducible and power bounded, then its peripheral point spectrum is either empty or a subgroup of the unit circle. In this note we show that the analogous assertion for the entire peripheral spectrum fails. More precisely, for every finite union $U$ of finite subgroups of the unit circle we construct an irreducible stochastic operator on $\ell^1$ whose peripheral spectrum equals $U$. We also give a similar construction fo…
We prove that, in a large class of Banach lattices, the fixed space of each commuting family of positive linear contractions is a lattice subspace. As consequences, new cyclicity results for the peripheral point spectra of positive operators and semigroups are derived; we also pose an open problem that naturally occurs in this context. Finally, a variety of counterexamples is presented to point out some limits of our results.
This paper considers strongly continuous semigroups of operators on Banach lattices which are locally eventually positive, a property that was first investigated in the context of concrete fourth-order evolution equations. We construct a simple example to show that the typical assumptions on the spectrum of the semigroup generator considered currently in the literature are far from necessary in the more general setting of local eventual positivity. Under minimal additional assumptions, we obtain results on the asymptotic behaviour of orbits, as well as necessary conditions on the peripheral po…
In connection to wavelet theory, we describe the peripheral spectrum of the transfer operator. The solution involves the analysis of certain representations of the algebra generated by two unitaries $U$ and $T$ that satisfy the commutation relation $UTU^{-1}=T^N$.
This article is a contribution to the spectral theory of so-called eventually positive operators, i.e.\ operators $T$ which may not be positive but whose powers $T^n$ become positive for large enough $n$. While the spectral theory of such operators is well understood in finite dimensions, the infinite dimensional case has received much less attention in the literature. We show that several sensible notions of "eventual positivity" can be defined in the infinite dimensional setting, and in contrast to the finite dimensional case those notions do not in general coincide. We then prove a variety …
Spectral problem for a family of periodic Sturm--Liouville problems \[ u''+λ^2(a(x)-a)u=0 \] depending on the parameter (a\in\mathbb R) is considered. An interpolation formula describing the behaviour of the branches of the spectrum in the transition from a definite problem to indefinite one is obtained.
We show that there exists a dense set of frequencies with positive Hausdorff dimension for which the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum of the critical almost Mathieu operator is positive.
In this paper, we prove sharp $\ell^2$ decay estimates of nonnegative generalized subharmonic functions on graphs with positive Laplacian spectrum, which extends the result by Li and Wang on Riemannian manifolds.
We study Schroedinger operators with periodic magnetic field in Euclidean 2-space, in the case of irrational magnetic flux. Positive measure Cantor spectrum is generically expected in the presence of an electric potential. We show that, even without electric potential, the spectrum has positive measure if the magnetic field is a perturbation of a constant one.
We study the Bonsall cone spectral radius and the approximate point spectrum of (in general non-linear) positively homogeneous, bounded and supremum preserving maps, defined on a max-cone in a given normed vector lattice. We prove that the Bonsall cone spectral radius of such maps is always included in its approximate point spectrum. Moreover, the approximate point spectrum always contains a (possibly trivial) interval. Our results apply to a large class of (nonlinear) max-type operators. We also generalize a known result that the spectral radius of a positive (linear) operator on a Banach lat…
We consider a continuous-time symmetric supercritical branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice with a finite set of the particle generation centres, i.e. branching sources. The main object of study is the evolutionary operator for the mean number of particles both at an arbitrary point and on the entire lattice. The existence of positive eigenvalues in the spectrum of an evolutionary operator results in an exponential growth of the number of particles in branching random walks, called supercritical in the such case. For supercritical branching random walks, it is shown that the amou…
Bony and Häfner have recently obtained positive commutator estimates on the Laplacian in the low-energy limit on asymptotically Euclidean spaces; these estimates can be used to prove local energy decay estimates if the metric is non-trapping. We simplify the proof of the estimates of Bony-Häfner and generalize them to the setting of scattering manifolds (i.e. manifolds with large conic ends), by applying a sharp Poincaré inequality. Our main result is the positive commutator estimate $$ χ_I(H^2Δ_g)\frac{i}{2}[H^2Δ_g,A]χ_I(H^2Δ_g) \geq Cχ_I(H^2Δ_g)^2, $$ where $H\uparrow \infty$ is a \emph{larg…
I give an example of a skew-shift Schrödinger operator with positive Lyapunov exponent in the spectrum for all positive coupling constant with constant frequency. This is the first example of this kind. The proof is based on CMV operators given by the skew-shift. Further results on these are derived.
We study the spectrum of complete noncompact manifolds with bounded curvature and positive injectivity radius. We give general conditions which imply that their essential spectrum has an arbitrarily large finite number of gaps. In particular, for any noncompact covering of a compact manifold, there is a metric on the base so that the lifted metric has an arbitrarily large finite number of gaps in its essential spectrum. Also, for any complete noncompact manifold with bounded curvature and positive injectivity radius we construct a metric uniformly equivalent to the given one (also of bounded c…
Solving inverse scattering problem for a discrete Sturm-Liouville operator with the fast decreasing potential one gets reflection coefficients $s_\pm$ and invertible operators $I+H_{s_\pm}$, where $ H_{s_\pm}$ is the Hankel operator related to the symbol $s_\pm$. The Marchenko-Fadeev theorem (in the continuous case) and the Guseinov theorem (in the discrete case), guarantees the uniqueness of solution of the inverse scattering problem. In this article we asks the following natural question --- can one find a precise condition guaranteeing that the inverse scattering problem is uniquely solvabl…
In this paper we present a class of Anderson type operators with independent, non-stationary (non-decaying) random potentials supported on a subset of positive density in the odd-dimensional lattice and prove the existence of pure absolutely continuous spectrum in the middle of the band for small disorder.
An explicit construction is provided for embedding n positive eigenvalues in the spectrum of a Schroedinger operator on the half-line with a Dirichlet boundary condition at the origin. The resulting potential is of von Neumann-Wigner type, but can be real valued as well as complex valued.
