Starting from Newton's gravitational theory, we give a general introduction into the spherically symmetric solution of Einstein's vacuum field equation, the Schwarzschild(-Droste) solution, and into one specific stationary axially symmetric solution, the Kerr solution. The Schwarzschild solution is unique and its metric can be interpreted as the exterior gravitational field of a spherically symmetric mass. The Kerr solution is only unique if the multipole moments of its mass and its angular momentum take on prescribed values. Its metric can be interpreted as the exterior gravitational field of a suitably rotating mass distribution. Both solutions describe objects exhibiting an event horizon, a frontier of no return. The corresponding notion of a black hole is explained to some extent. Eventually, we present some generalizations of the Kerr solution.
In this note the Schwarzschild and Kerr solutions are constructed for 3 space and $N$ time dimensions. Solutions, by construction, possesses symmetry with respect to rotations in time volume.
We describe a finite-difference method for locating apparent horizons and illustrate its capabilities on boosted Kerr and Schwarzschild black holes. Our model spacetime is given by the Kerr-Schild metric. We apply a Lorentz boost to this spacetime metric and then carry out a 3+1 decomposition. The result is a slicing of Kerr/Schwarzschild in which the black hole is propagated and Lorentz contracted. We show that our method can locate distorted apparent horizons efficiently and accurately.
The equilibrium configurations between a Schwarzschild black hole and a hyperextreme Kerr object are shown to be described by a three-parameter subfamily of the extended double-Kerr solution. For this subfamily, its Ernst potential and corresponding metric functions, we provide a physical representation which employs as arbitrary parameters the individual Komar masses and relative coordinate distance between the sources. The calculation of horizon's local angular velocity induced in the Schwarzschild black hole by the Kerr constituent yields a simple expression inversely proportional to the sq…
Regarding the spin-up of Schwarzschild-Kerr and Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli systems as a symmetry breaking phase transition, critical exponents are evaluated and compared with classical Landau predictions. We suggest a definition of isothermal compressibity which is independent of spin direction. We find identical exponents for both systems, and possible universality in the phase transitions of these systems.
The metrics of gravitational shock waves for a Schwarzschild black hole in ordinary coordinates and for a Kerr black hole in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates are derived. The Kerr metric is discussed for two cases: the case of a Kerr black hole moving parallel to the rotational axis, and moving perpendicular to the rotational axis. Then, two properties from the derived metrics are investigated: the shift of a null coordinate and the refraction angle crossing the gravitational shock wave. Astrophysical applications for these metrics are discussed in short.
A technique for extracting from the appropriate field equations the relativistic motion of Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom and Kerr particles moving in external fields is motivated and illustrated. The key assumptions are that (a) the particles are isolated and (b) near the particles the wave fronts of the radiation generated by their motion are smoothly deformed spheres. No divergent integrals arise in this approach. The particles are not test particles. The formalism is used, however, to derive the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations of motion of spinning test particles, neglecting spin-spin te…
Verification of the First Law of Horizon Thermodynamics for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman Black Holes in Four-Dimensional f(R) Gravity with Dual Scalar Fields
In this work, generalizing our previous results, we determine in an original and the simplest way three most important thermodynamical characteristics (Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, Bekenstein quantization of the entropy or (outer) horizon surface area and Hawking temperature) of Schwarzschild, Kerr and Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We start physically by assumption that circumference of black hole (outer) horizon holds the natural (integer) number of corresponding reduced Compton's wave length and use mathematically only simple algebraic equations. (It is conceptually similar to Bohr's quantiz…
We revisit a little known theorem due to Beltrami, through which the integration of the geodesic equations of a curved manifold is accomplished by a method which, even if inspired by the Hamilton-Jacobi method, is purely geometric. The application of this theorem to the Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics leads straightforwardly to the general solution of their geodesic equations. This way of dealing with the problem is, in our opinion, very much in keeping with the geometric spirit of general relativity. In fact, thanks to this theorem we can integrate the geodesic equations by a geometrical metho…
Two particle collisions close to the horizon of the rotating nonextremal Kerr's and Schwarzschild black holes are analyzed. For the case of multiple collisions it is shown that high energy in the centre of mass frame occurs due to a great relative velocity of two particles and a large Lorentz factor. The dependence of the relative velocity on the distance to horizon is analyzed, the time of movement from the point in the accretion disc to the point of scattering with large energy as well as the time of back movement to the Earth are calculated. It is shown that they have reasonable order.
We present a time dependent isotropic fluid solution around a Schwarzschild black hole. We offer the solutions and discuss the effects on the field equations and the horizon. We derive the energy density, pressure and the equation of state parameter. In the second part, we generalize the rotating black hole solution to an expanding universe. We derive from the proposed metric the special solutions of the field equations for the dust approximation and the dark energy solution. We show that the presence of a rotating black hole does not modify the scale factor $b(t)=t^{2/3}$ law for dust, nor $b…
We provide a prescription to solve the metric completion problem in gravitational self-force calculations on a Kerr spacetime by fixing the remaining gauge freedom. We discuss the explicit example of eccentric equatorial orbits, recovering all limiting cases already studied in the literature of eccentric orbits in Schwarzschild as well as circular orbits in both Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes.
In addition to the well-known quasinormal modes, the gravitational modes of the Kerr geometry also include sets of total-transmission modes. Each mode can be considered as an element of a sequence of modes parameterized by the angular momentum of the black hole. One family of gravitational total-transmission modes of Kerr have been known for some time. Modes in this family connect to a Schwarzschild limit where the mode frequency is finite and purely imaginary. Recently, what was thought to be an additional branch of this original family of modes was discovered. However, this new branch is act…
We investigate gravitational radiation memory and its corresponding effect on the asymptotic symmetries of a body whose exterior is a boosted Schwarzschild spacetime. First, in the context of linearized theory, we consider such a Schwarzschild body which is initially at rest, then goes through a radiative stage and finally emerges as a boosted Schwarzschild body. We show that the proper retarded solution of the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime for this process can be described in terms of the ingoing Kerr-Schild form of the Schwarzschild metric for both the initial and final states. An outgoin…
The pseudo-complex General Relativity (pc-GR) is further considered. A new projection method is proposed. It is shown, that the pc-GR introduces automatically terms into the system which can be interpreted as dark energy. The modified pseudo-complex Schwarzschild solution is investigated. The dark energy part is treated as a liquid and possible solutions are discussed. As a consequence, the collapse of a large stellar mass into a singularity at $r=0$ is avoided and no event-horizon is formed. Thus, black holes don't exist. The resulting object can be viewed as a gray star. It contains no singu…
The Kerr solution is generated from the Schwarzschild solution by a simple combination of real global coordinate transformations and of invariance transformations acting on the space of stationary solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. The same transformation can be used to generate a spinning field configuration from any static axisymmetric configuration. We illustrate this by generating from the continuous family of Voorhees--Zipoy vacuum solutions a family of solutions endowed with mass, angular momentum, dipole magnetic moment and quadrupole electric moment.
The Landau-Lifshitz decomposition of spacetime, or (1+3)-split, determines the three-dimensional velocity and acceleration as measured by static observers. We use these quantities to analyze the geodesic particles in Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes. We show that in both cases there is no room for a positive acceleration (repulsion). We also compute the escape and terminal speeds. The escape speed in the case of a static black hole coincides with the Newton result. For the Kerr spacetime, the escape speed depends on the polar angle, showing that a particle needs less energy to escape in the d…
We discuss quantum black holes in asymptotically safe quantum gravity with a scale identification based on the Kretschmann scalar. After comparing this scenario with other scale identifications, we investigate in detail the Kerr-(A)dS and Schwarzschild-(A)dS space-times. The global structure of these geometries is studied as well as the central curvature singularity and test particle trajectories. The existence of a Planck-sized, extremal, zero temperature black hole remnant guarantees a stable endpoint of the evaporation process via Hawking radiation.
It is shown how the use of the Kerr-Schild coordinate system can greatly simplify the formulation of the geodesic equation of the Schwarzschild solution. An application of this formulation to the numerical computation of the aspect of a non-rotating black hole is presented. The generalization to the case of the Kerr solution is presented too.
We have investigated the behavior of three curvature invariants for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrøm, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman black holes. We have also studied these invariants for a Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time, the $γ$ metric, and for a 2+1 charged dimensional black hole. The invariants are $I_{1}=R_{αβμν;λ}R^{αβμν;λ}$, $I_{2}=R_{μν;λ} R^{μν;λ}$, and $I_{3}=C_{αβμν;λ}C^{αβμν;λ}$. For all but the Kerr-Newman case these invariants serve as either horizon or stationary surface detectors. The Kerr-Newman case is more complicated. We show that $I_{1}$ vanishs on the horizon in any space-time…
a previous evaluation of the one-graviton loop corrections to the energy-momentum tensor has been extended to particles with unit spin and speculations are presented concerning general properties of such forms.
We investigate the classical stability of Schwarzschild-AdS black hole in a massive theory of the Einstein-Weyl gravity. It turns out that the linearized Einstein tensor perturbations exhibit unstable modes featuring the Gregory-Laflamme instability of five-dimensional AdS black string, in contrast to the stable Schwarzschild-AdS black hole in the Einstein-Weyl gravity. We confirm that the instability of the black hole in the Einstein-Weyl gravity arises from the massiveness but not a feature of fourth-order derivative theory giving ghost states.
The spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system in Schwarzschild coordinates (i.e. polar slicing and areal radial coordinate) is considered. An improved continuation criterion for global existence of classical solutions is given. Two other types of criteria which prevent finite time blow-up are also given.
The Kerr-Schild version of the Schwarzschild metric contains a Minkowski background which provides a definition of a boosted black hole. There are two Kerr-Schild versions corresponding to ingoing or outgoing principle null directions. We show that the two corresponding Minkowski backgrounds and their associated boosts have an unexpected difference. We analyze this difference and discuss the implications in the nonlinear regime for the gravitational memory effect resulting from the ejection of massive particles from an isolated system. We show that the nonlinear effect agrees with the lineariz…
In the context of effective field theory, we consider quantum gravity with minimally coupled massless particles. Fixing the background geometry to be of the Kerr-Schild type, we fully determine the one-loop effective action of the theory whose finite non-local part is induced by the long-distance portion of quantum loops. This is accomplished using the non-local expansion of the heat kernel in addition to a non-linear completion technique through which the effective action is expanded in gravitational curvatures. Via Euclidean methods, we identify a logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Haw…
The known static isotropic metric of Schwarzschild solution of Einstein equation cannot cover with the range of r<2MG, a new isotropic metric of Schwarzschild solution is obtained. The new isotropic metric has the characters: (1) It is dynamic and periodic. (2) It has infinite singularities of the spacetime. (3) It cannot cover with the range of 0<r<r0; On the other hand, r0 can be small discretionarily. (4) It seemed as if the range of negative r could be unavoidable, although this range is meaningless for the Schwarzschild metric.
A static Einstein metric that generalizes the Schwarzschild metric is considered. The event horizon is not necessarily a sphere and the term $dt\sp2$ is a function on such horizon. That the metric is Einstein establishes a relation between its terms. One demonstrates that the scalar curvature of the horizon is constant, and that the term $dt\sp2$ gives rise to (i) the metric of the horizon being Einstein, or (ii) the scalar curvature of the horizon being proportional to an eigenvalue of the Laplace operator.
Ghost neutrinos in radiative Kerr spacetime endowed with totally skew-symmetric Cartan contortion is presented. The computations are made by using the Newman-Penrose (NP) calculus. The model discussed here maybe useful in several astrophysical applications specially in black hole astrophysics.
The outward-pointing principal null direction of the Schwarzschild Riemann tensor is null hypersurface-forming. If the Schwarzschild mass spontaneously jumps across one such hypersurface then the hypersurface is the history of an outgoing light-like shell. The outward-- pointing principal null direction of the Kerr Riemann tensor is asymptotically (in the neighbourhood of future null infinity) null hypersurface-forming. If the Kerr parameters of mass and angular momentum spontaneously jump across one such asymptotic hypersurface then the asymptotic hypersurface is shown to be the history of an…
We use direct products of Einstein Metrics to construct new solutions to Einstein's Equations with cosmological constant. We illustrate the technique with three families of solutions having the geometries Kerr/de Sitter X de Sitter, Kerr/anti-de Sitter X anti-de Sitter and Kerr X Kerr.
We show how the concurrent implementation of the exact solutions of the Einstein equations, of the equations of motion of the test particles, and of the relativistic estimate of the emission of gravitational waves from test particles, can establish a priori constraints on the possible phenomena occurring in Nature. Two examples of test particles starting at infinite distance or from finite distance in a circular orbit around a Kerr black hole are considered: the first leads to a well defined gravitational wave burst the second to a smooth merging into the black hole. This analysis is necessary…
The static Kottler metric is the Schwarzschild vacuum metric extended to include a cosmological constant. Angular momentum is added to the Kottler metric by using Newman and Janis' complexifying algorithm. The new metric is the Lambda generalization of the Kerr spacetime. It is stationary, axially symmetric, Petrov type II, and has Kerr-Schild form.
The ultrarelativistic limit of the Schwarzschild and the Kerr-geometry together with their respective energy-momentum tensors is derived. The approach is based on tensor-distributions making use of the underlying Kerr-Schild structure, which remains stable under the ultrarelativistic boost.
It has been shown that for the Reissner-Nordstrom solution to the vacuum Einstein field equations charge, like mass, has a unique space-time signature [Found. Phys. 38, 293-300 (2008)]. The presence of charge results in a negative curvature. This work, which includes a discussion of effective mass, is extended here to the Kerr-Newman solution.
In this short note we shall demonstrate that given a smooth solution $γ$ to the linearised Einstein equations on Schwarzschild which is supported on the $l\geq 2$ spherical harmonics and expressed relative to a transverse and traceless gauge then one can construct from it a smooth solution to the sourced Maxwell equations expressed relative to a generalised Lorentz gauge. Here the Maxwell current is constructed from those gauge-invariant combinations of the components of $γ$ which are determined by solutions to the Regge--Wheeler and Zerilli equations. The result thus provides an elegant link …
In contrast to the Schwarzschild solution, the infinite red-shift surfaces and null surfaces of the Kerr solution to the axially-symmetric Einstein field equations are distinct. Some three-dimensional depictions of these surfaces are presented here for observers following the time-like Killing vector of the Kerr and Kerr-Newman solutions. Some similarities of the latter to the Reissner-Nordstrom solution are also discussed. In the case of the Kerr solution, the inner infinite red-shift surface terminates at the ring singularity. This is not the case for the Kerr-Newman solution where the infin…
We consider in this work the asymptotics of a Maxwell field in Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes. In any subextremal Kerr spacetime, we show energy and pointwise decay estimates for all components under an assumption of a basic energy and Morawetz estimate for spin $\pm 1$ components. If restricted to slowly rotating Kerr, we utilize the basic energy and Morawetz estimates proven in an earlier work to further improve these decay estimates such that the total power of decay for all components of Maxwell field is $-7/2$. In the end, depending on if the Newman--Penrose constant vanishes or not, w…
We describe a method to analyze causal geodesics in static and spherically symmetric spacetimes of Kerr-Schild form which, in particular, allows for a detailed study of the geodesics in the vicinity of the central singularity by means of a regularization procedure based on a generalization of the McGehee regularization for the motion of Newtonian point particles moving in a power-law potential. The McGehee regularization was used by Belbruno and Pretorius to perform a dynamical system regularization of the central singularity of the motion of massless test particles in the Schwarzschild spacet…
The exact static spherically symmetric solutions for pure-aether theory and Einstein-aether theory are presented. It is shown that both theories can deliver the Schwarzschild metric, but only the Einstein-aether theory contains solutions with "almost-Schwarzschild" metrics that satisfy Einstein's experiments. Two specific solutions are of special interest: one in pure-aether theory that derives the attractive nature of gravitation as a result of Minskowski signature of the metric, and one - the Jacobson solution- of Einstein-aether theory with "almost-Schwarzschild" metric and non-zero Ricci t…
We prove that given a solution of the Einstein equations $g_{ab}$ for the matter field $T_{ab}$, an autoparallel null vector field $l^{a}$ and a solution $(l_{a}l_{c}, \mathcal{T}_{ac})$ of the linearized Einstein equation on the given background, the Kerr-Schild metric $g_{ac}+λl_{a}l_{c}$ ($λ$ arbitrary constant) is an exact solution of the Einstein equation for the energy-momentum tensor $T_{ac}+λ\mathcal{T}_{ac}+λ^{2}l_{(a}\mathcal{T}_{c)b}l^{b}$. The mixed form of the Einstein equation for Kerr-Schild metrics with autoparallel null congruence is also linear. Some more technical conditions…
A reformulation of the Schwarzschild solution of the linearised Einstein field equations in post-Riemannian Finsler spacetime is derived. The solution is constructed in three stages: the exterior solution, the event-horizon solution and the interior solution. It is shown that the exterior solution is asymptotically similar to Newtonian gravity at large distances implying that Newtonian gravity is a low energy approximation of the solution. Application of Eddington-Finklestein coordinates is shown to reproduce the results obtained from standard general relativity at the event horizon. Further a…
We extend the previously found accelerated Kerr-Schild metrics for Einstein-Maxwell-null dust and Einstein-Born-Infeld-null dust equations to the cases including the cosmological constant. This way we obtain the generalization of the charged de Sitter metrics in static space-times. We also give a generalization of the zero acceleration limit of our previous Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Born-Infeld solutions.
Attempts to find black hole microstates using the Hamiltonian phase space approach have been made on the Schwarzschild spacetime. Since the Schwarzschild spacetime is also in the larger family of the Kerr spacetimes, and both are asymptotically flat, the Kerr black hole is a good option for the method development. The Kerr black hole is a spinning one. We perform this analysis on the Kerr spacetime and we obtain promising results using the covariant phase space analysis. Although we have forced ourselves to use the Bondi fall-off conditions, we find the gauge degrees of freedom that could be g…
The Kaluza-Klein formalism of the Einstein's theory, based on the (2,2)-fibration of a generic 4-dimensional spacetime, describes general relativity as a Yang-Mills gauge theory on the 2-dimensional base manifold, where the local gauge symmetry is the group of the diffeomorphisms of the 2-dimensional fibre manifold. As a way of illustrating how to use this formalism in finding exact solutions, we apply this formalism to the spherically symmetric case, and obtain the Schwarzschild solution by solving the field equations.
As an example of a black hole in a non-flat background a composite static spacetime is constructed. It comprises a vacuum Schwarzschild spacetime for the interior of the black hole across whose horizon it is matched on to the spacetime of Vaidya representing a black hole in the background of the Einstein universe. The scale length of the exterior sets a maximum to the black hole mass. To obtain a non-singular exterior, the Vaidya metric is matched to an Einstein universe. The behaviour of scalar waves is studied in this composite model.
This is the third in a series of papers aimed at developing a practical time-domain method for self-force calculations in Kerr spacetime. The key elements of the method are (i) removal of a singular part of the perturbation field with a suitable analytic "puncture", (ii) decomposition of the perturbation equations in azimuthal ($m$-)modes, taking advantage of the axial symmetry of the Kerr background, (iii) numerical evolution of the individual $m$-modes in 2+1-dimensions with a finite difference scheme, and (iv) reconstruction of the local self-force from the mode sum. Here we report a first …
We consider the motion of classical spinning test particles in Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics and investigate innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO). The main goal of this work is to find analytically the small-spin corrections for the parameters of ISCO (radius, total angular momentum, energy, orbital angular frequency) of spinning test particles in the case of vectors of black hole spin, particle spin and orbital angular momentum being collinear to each other. We analytically derive the small-spin linear corrections for arbitrary Kerr parameter $a$. The cases of Schwarzschild, slowly rotati…
The second Bianchi identity can be recast as an evolution equation for the Riemann curvatures. Here we will report on such a system for a vacuum static spherically symmetric spacetime. This is the first of two papers. In the following paper we will extend the ideas developed here to general vacuum spacetimes. In this paper we will demonstrate our ideas on a Schwarzschild spacetime and give detailed numerical results. For suitable choices of lapse function we find that the system gives excellent results with long term stability.
A new representation, which does not contain the third-order derivatives of the coordinates, of the exact Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations, describing the motion of a spinning test particle, is obtained under the assumption of the Mathisson-Pirani condition in a Kerr background. For this purpose the integrals of energy and angular momentum of the spinning particle as well as a differential relationship following from the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations are used. The form of these equations is adapted for their computer integration with the aim to investigate the influence of the spin-…
