In this work, generalizing our previous results, we determine in an original and the simplest way three most important thermodynamical characteristics (Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, Bekenstein quantization of the entropy or (outer) horizon surface area and Hawking temperature) of Schwarzschild, Kerr and Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We start physically by assumption that circumference of black hole (outer) horizon holds the natural (integer) number of corresponding reduced Compton's wave length and use mathematically only simple algebraic equations. (It is conceptually similar to Bohr's quantization postulate in Bohr's atomic model interpreted by de Broglie relation.)
An approach to computing, withing the framework of distribution theory, the distributional valued energy-momentum tensor for the Schwarzschild spacetime is disscused. This approach avoids the problems associated with the regularization of singularities in the curvature tensors and shares common features with the by now standard treatment of discontinuities in General Relativity. Finally, the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime is also considered using the same approach.
We describe twisted configurations of spinor field on the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes that arise due to existence of the twisted spinor bundles over the standard black hole topology. From a physical point of view the appearance of spinor twisted configurations is linked with the natural presence of Dirac monopoles that play the role of connections in the complex line bundles corresponding to the twisted spinor bundles. Possible application to the Hawking radiation is also outlined.
We study thermodynamic quantities and examine the stability of a black hole in a cavity inspired by the noncommutative geometry. It turns out that thermodynamic behavior of the noncommutative black hole is analogous to that of the Reissner-Nordström black hole in the near extremal limit. Moreover, we identify the noncommutative parameter with the squared electric charge with some constants.
A technique for extracting from the appropriate field equations the relativistic motion of Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom and Kerr particles moving in external fields is motivated and illustrated. The key assumptions are that (a) the particles are isolated and (b) near the particles the wave fronts of the radiation generated by their motion are smoothly deformed spheres. No divergent integrals arise in this approach. The particles are not test particles. The formalism is used, however, to derive the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations of motion of spinning test particles, neglecting spin-spin te…
The thermodynamical properties of the Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter black hole in the grand canonical ensemble are investigated using York's formalism. The black hole is enclosed in a cavity with finite radius where the temperature and electrostatic potential are fixed. The boundary conditions allow us to compute the relevant thermodynamical quantities, e.g. thermal energy, entropy and charge. The stability conditions imply that there are thermodynamically stable black hole solutions, under certain conditions. Instantons with negative heat capacity are also found.
In this paper, we study the existence of (quasi)bound states in two spacetime geometries describing Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. For obtaining this type of states we search for discrete quantum modes of the massive Dirac equation in the two geometries. After imposing the quantization condition, an analytical expression for the energy of the ground states is derived. The energy of higher states is then obtained numerically. For very small values of the black hole mass $M$ we compare the energy of the Reissner-Nordström black hole quasibound state with the Dirac-Coulomb ener…
Studying particle motion in the gravitational field of a black hole from the perspective of different observers is important for separating the coordinate artifacts from the physical phenomena. In this paper, we show that a freely falling test particle exhibits gravitational repulsion by a black hole as seen by an asymptotic observer, whereas nothing of the kind happens as recorded by a freely falling observer or by an observer located at a finite distance from the event horizon. This analysis is carried out for a general Reissner-Nordström, an extremal Reissner-Nordström, and a Schwarzschild …
In this paper we are studying the scattering of massless Dirac fermions by Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. This is done by applying the partial wave analysis to the scattering modes obtained after solving the massless Dirac equation in the asymptotic regions of the two black hole geometries. We succeed to obtain analytic phase shifts with the help of which the scattering cross section is computed. The glory and spiral scattering phenomena are showed to be present like in the case of massive fermion scattering by black holes.
In this manuscript, the modification of thermodynamic properties of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes in the presence of higher-order generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) have been investigated. We considered heuristic analysis versus the behavior of a particle that is absorbed by the black hole, and then, we studied the thermodynamic properties of the black holes such as temperature-mass, temperature-charge-mass, entropy, and heat capacity functions up to the first and second-order of the GUP parameter. We compared the behaviors of the GUP-corrected thermodynamic properties …
We prove by explicit construction that there exists a maximal slicing of the Schwarzschild spacetime such that the lapse has zero gradient at the puncture. This boundary condition has been observed to hold in numerical evolutions, but in the past it was not clear whether the numerically obtained maximal slices exist analytically. We show that our analytical result agrees with numerical simulation. Given the analytical form for the lapse, we can derive that at late times the value of the lapse at the event horizon approaches the value ${3/16}\sqrt{3} \approx 0.3248$, justifying the numerical es…
A concentric charged thin-shell encircling a Reissner-Nordström black hole screens the clectric / magnetic charge completely to match with an external Schwarzschild black hole. The negative mass thin-shell is shown to be stable against radial perturbations. It is shown further that by reversing the roles of inside Reissner-Nordström and outside Schwarzschild geometries the mass of the appropriate shell becomes positive.
The pseudo-complex General Relativity (pc-GR) is further considered. A new projection method is proposed. It is shown, that the pc-GR introduces automatically terms into the system which can be interpreted as dark energy. The modified pseudo-complex Schwarzschild solution is investigated. The dark energy part is treated as a liquid and possible solutions are discussed. As a consequence, the collapse of a large stellar mass into a singularity at $r=0$ is avoided and no event-horizon is formed. Thus, black holes don't exist. The resulting object can be viewed as a gray star. It contains no singu…
The model is built in which the main global properties of classical and quasi-classical black holes become local. These are the event horizon, "no-hair", temperature and entropy. Our construction is based on the features of a quantum collapse, discovered while studying some quantum black hole models. But it is purely classical, and this allows to use the Einstein equations and classical (local) thermodynamics and explain in this way the "log(3)" - puzzle.
Using standard coordinates, the Maxwell equations in the Reissner-Nordström geometry are written in terms of a couple of scalar fields satisfying Klein-Gordon like equations. The density of states is derived in the semi-classical approximation and the first quantum corrections to the black hole entropy is computed by using the brick-wall model.
We obtain a Schwarzschild and a Reissner-Nordstrom emergent black holes, by exploring the torsion dynamics in a generalized curvature formulation, underlying an effective D4-brane on S1. It is shown that a constant effective metric, sourced by a background fluctuation in B2-potential, on a D3-brane receives a dynamical quantum correction in presence of an electric charge.
For the radial motion of massive particles with large angular momenta in Schwarzschild geometry and that of massive charged particles with large angular momenta or energy in a particular range in Reissner--Nordström geometry, there exist classically forbidden regions on the outside of the respective event horizons which scatter certain infalling geodesics or screen some of the black holes' evaporation by reflecting the emitted particles back into the black holes. Quantum tunneling across this forbidden regions is studied.
In this paper, we investigate the phase transitions of Reissner-Nordström (RN) and Schwarzschild black holes for the extended uncertainty principle (EUP) framework. Considering temperature $T$, charge $Q$ and electric potential $Φ$ as the state parameters, we show the van der Waals (vdW) like phase transition of RN black hole in $Q-Φ$ diagrams and find the critical points depending on EUP parameter $α$. Furthermore, we find Hawking-Page like phase transition for Schwarzschild black hole. The results imply that the black holes in asymptotically flat space have the similar phase structure with t…
Verification of the First Law of Horizon Thermodynamics for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman Black Holes in Four-Dimensional f(R) Gravity with Dual Scalar Fields
We obtain a (5+2)-dimensional global flat embedding of the (3+1)-dimensional curved RN-AdS space. Our results include the various limiting cases of global embedding Minkowski space (GEMS) geometries of the RN, Schwarzschild-AdS in (5+2)-dimensions, Schwarzschild in (5+1)-dimensions, purely charged space, and universal covering space of AdS in (4+1)-dimensions, through the successive truncation procedure of parameters in the original curved space.
There were problems encountered in extending the K-slicing of the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) spacetimes [1, 2] to the extreme case, when charge equals mass (in gravitational units). The earlier procedure is here modified so as to allow us to obtain a K-slicing of the region outside the horizon of the extreme metric by spacelike hypersurfaces. We checked this new procedure by applying it to the Schwarzschild and usual RN metrics and recovering the previous foliation with an improved accuracy. We have also checked the asymptotic behaviour of the K-slicing for large K by extrapolat…
In this paper, we explore the interior dynamics of neutral and charged black holes. Scalar collapses in flat, Schwarzschild, and Reissner-Nordstrom geometries are simulated. We examine the dynamics in the vicinities of the central singularity of a Schwarzschild black hole and of the inner horizon of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. In simulating scalar collapses in Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom geometries, Kruskal and Kruskal-like coordinates are used, respectively, with the presence of a scalar field being taken into account. It is found that, besides near the inner horizons of Reissne…
It has been known that the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (Sch-dS) black hole may not be in thermal equilibrium and also be found to be thermodynamically unstable in the standard black hole thermodynamics. In the present work, we investigate the possibility to realize the thermodynamical stability of the Sch-dS black hole as an effective system by using the Rényi statistics, which includes the non-extensive nature of black holes. Our results indicate that the non-extensivity allows the black hole to be thermodynamically stable which gives rise to the lower bound on the non-extensive parameter. By com…
We analyze the tidal forces produced in the spacetime of Reissner-Nordström black holes. We point out that the radial component of the tidal force changes sign just outside the event horizon if the charge-to-mass ratio is close to $1$ unlike in Schwarzschild spacetime of uncharged black holes, and that the angular component changes sign between the outer and inner horizons. We solve the geodesic deviation equations for radially falling bodies towards the charged black hole. We find, for example, that the radial component of the geodesic deviation vector starts decreasing inside the event horiz…
It is shown that the extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole, the non-extremal one with multiple scattering particles, and the Schwarzschild black hole with radial head-on particles are stable under the collision of the particles near the horizon, if the back-reaction effect and the effect generated by gravity of particles are involved. Moreover, the collision near Reissner-Nordström black holes with astrophysically typical mass can not generate the Planck-scale center-of-mass energy. However, the head-on collision near the typical primordial black hole could just occur at the Planck-energy sca…
We consider the problem of the existence of global embeddings of metrics of spherically symmetric black holes into an ambient space with the minimal possible dimension. We classify the possible types of embeddings by the type of realization of the metric symmetry by ambient space symmetries. For the Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-de Sitter, and Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, we prove that the known global embeddings are the only ones. We obtain a new global embedding for the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter metrics and prove that constructing such embeddings is impossible for the Schwarzschild-anti…
Certain time-like singularities are shown to be resolved already in classical General Relativity once one passes from particle probes to scalar waves. The time evolution can be defined uniquely and some general conditions for that are formulated. The Reissner-Nordstrom singularity allows for communication through the singularity and can be termed "beam splitter" since the transmission probability of a suitably prepared high energy wave packet is 25%. The high frequency dependence of the cross section is w^{-4/3}. However, smooth geometries arbitrarily close to the singular one require a finite…
We apply the confluent Heun functions to study the resonant frequencies (quasispectrum), the Hawking radiation and the scattering process of scalar waves, in a class of spacetimes, namely, the ones generated by a Kerr-Newman-Kasuya spacetime (dyon black hole) and a Reissner-Nordström black hole surrounded by a magnetic field (Ernst spacetime). In both spacetimes, the solutions for the angular and radial parts of the corresponding Klein-Gordon equations are obtained exactly, for massive and massless fields, respectively. The special cases of Kerr and Schwarzschild black holes are analyzed and t…

We present analogue models for the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetimes based on unidirectional hydrodynamic flows. We show that, with appropriate coordinate transformations, sound waves in a moving fluid propagate as scalar fields at the equatorial sections of Schwarzschild and RN black holes. The coordinate associated with the direction of the flow plays the role of the radial coordinate in standard Schwarzschild/RN coordinates, while the transversal spatial coordinate is related to the angular coordinate on each equatorial slice. The magnitude of the flow velocity is related…
We discuss semiclassical states in quantum gravity corresponding to Schwarzschild as well as Reissner Nordström black holes. We show that reduced quantisation of these models is equivalent to Wheeler-DeWitt quantisation with a particular factor ordering. We then demonstrate how the entropy of black holes can be consistently calculated from these states. While this leads to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in the Schwarzschild and non-extreme Reissner-Nordström cases, the entropy for the extreme Reissner-Nordström case turns out to be zero.
A coordinate system that blockwise-simplifies the Kerr-Newman black hole's thermodynamical state space Ruppeiner metric geometry is constructed, with discussion of the limiting cases corresponding to simpler black holes. It is deduced that one of the three conformal Killing vectors of the Reissner-Nordstrom and Kerr cases (whose thermodynamical state space metrics are 2 by 2 and conformally flat) survives generalization to the Kerr-Newman case's 3 by 3 thermodynamical state space metric.
In the eikonal regime, we analytically calculate quasinormal resonance frequencies for massless scalar perturbations of the higher-dimensional Reissner--Nordström (RN) black holes. Remarkably, we find that the higher-dimensional RN black holes coupled with the massless scalar fields have the fastest relaxation rates in the Schwarzschild limit, this is qualitatively different from the four-dimensional case where the black hole with non-vanishing charge has the fastest relaxation rate.
Properties pertaining to thermodynamical local stability of Reissner-Nordström black holes surrounded by quintessence as well as adiabatic invariance, adiabatic charging and a generalized Smarr formula are discussed. Limits for the entropy, temperature and electric potential ensuring stability of canonical ensembles are determined by the classical thermodynamical and Poincaré methods. By the latter approach we show that microcanonical ensembles (isolated black holes) are stable. Two geometrical approaches lead to determine the same states corresponding to second order phase transitions.
We investigate the numerical stability of accelerated AdS black holes against linear scalar perturbations. In particular, we study the evolution of a probe non-minimally coupled scalar field on Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström AdS black holes with small accelerations by computing the quasinormal modes of the perturbation spectrum. We decompose the scalar field Klein-Gordon equation and study the eigenvalue problem for its angular and radial-temporal parts using different numerical methods. The angular part is written in terms of the Heun solution and expanded through the Frobenius method w…
Schwarzschild black hole being thermodynamically unstable, corrections to its entropy due to small thermal fluctuations cannot be computed. However, a thermodynamically stable Schwarzschild solution can be obtained within a cavity of any finite radius by immersing it in an isothermal bath. For these boundary conditions, classically there are either two black hole solutions or no solution. In the former case, the larger mass solution has a positive specific heat and hence is locally thermodynamically stable. We find that the entropy of this black hole, including first order fluctuation correcti…
In this paper we study the strong gravitational lensing scenario where the lens is a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We obtain the basic equations and show that, as in the case of Schwarzschild black hole, besides the primary and secondary images, two infinite sets of relativistic images are formed. We find analytical expressions for the positions and amplifications of the relativistic images. The formalism is applied to the case of a low-mass black hole placed at the galactic halo.
We study the thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of a five-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole in the extended phase space by treating the cosmological constant as being related to the number of colors in the boundary gauge theory and its conjugate quantity as the associated chemical potential. It is found that the contribution of the charge of the black hole to the chemical potential is always positive and the existence of charge make the chemical potential become positive more easily. We calculate the scalar curvatures of the thermodynamical Weinhold metric, Ruppeiner metric …
We consider a microscopic model of a stretched horizon of the Reissner-Nordström black hole. In our model the stretched horizon consists of discrete constituents. Using our model we obtain an explicit, analytic expression for the partition function of the hole. Our partition function implies, among other things, the Hawking effect, and provides it with a microscopic explanation as a phase transition taking place at the stretched horizon. The partition function also implies the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy law. The model and its consequences are similar to those obtained previously for the Schwar…
It is shown that a quantized Schwarzschild black hole, if described by a square root energy spectrum with exponential multiplicity, can be treated as a microcanonical ensemble without problem leading to the expected thermodynamical properties.
We investigate the static and spherically black hole solutions in the quadratic-order extended vector-tensor theories without suffering from the Ostrogradsky instabilities, which include the quartic-order (beyond-)generalized Proca theories as the subclass. We start from the most general action of the vector-tensor theories constructed with up to the quadratic-order terms of the first-order covariant derivatives of the vector field, and derive the Euler-Lagrange equations for the metric and vector field variables in the static and spherically symmetric backgrounds. We then substitute the space…
We present detailed calculations of the quasinormal modes of Reissner-Nordstrom black holes. While the first few, slowly damped, modes depend on the charge of the black hole in a relatively simple way, we find that the rapidly damped modes show several peculiar features. The higher modes generally spiral into the value for the extreme black hole as the charge increases. We also discuss the possible existence of a purely imaginary mode for the Schwarzschild black hole: Our data suggest that there is a quasinormal mode that limits to $ωM = -2i$ as $Q\to 0$.
The Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black hole metrics appear as exact solutions in the recently formulated massive gravity of de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley (dRGT), where the mass term sets the curvature scale. They occur within a two-parameter family of dGRT mass terms. They show no trace of a cloud of scalar graviton modes, and in the limit of vanishing graviton mass they go smoothly to the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström metrics.
This paper considers the effects of space noncommutativity on the thermodynamics of a Reissner-Nordström black hole. In the first step, we extend the ordinary formalism of Bekenstein-Hawking to the case of charged black holes in commutative space. In the second step we investigate the effects of space noncommutativity and the generalized uncertainty principle on the thermodynamics of charged black holes. Finally we compare thermodynamics of charged black holes in commutative space with thermodynamics of Schwarzschild black hole in noncommutative space. In this comparison we explore some concep…
We consider $d\geqslant 4$ Einstein--(extended-)Yang-Mills theory, where the gauge sector is augmented by higher order terms. Linearizing the (extended) Yang-Mills equations on the background of the electric Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole, we show the existence of normalizable zero modes, dubbed non-Abelian magnetic stationary clouds. The non-linear realization of these clouds bifurcates the RN family into a branch of static, spherically symmetric, electrically charged and asymptotically flat black holes with non-Abelian hair. Generically, the hairy black holes are thermodynamically prefer…
Scalar field self-force effects on a scalar charge orbiting a Reissner-Nordström black hole are investigated. The scalar wave equation is solved analytically in a post-Newtonian framework, and the solution is used to compute the self-field as well as the components of the self-force at the particle's location up to 7.5 post-Newtonian order. The energy fluxes radiated to infinity and down the hole are also evaluated. Comparison with previous numerical results in the Schwarzschild case shows a good agreement in both strong-field and weak-field regimes.
We analyze in detail the highly damped quasinormal modes of $d$-dimensional Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{\rm{o}}$m black holes with small charge, paying particular attention to the large but finite damping limit in which the Schwarzschild results should be valid. In the infinite damping limit, we confirm using different methods the results obtained previously in the literature for higher dimensional Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{\rm{o}}$m black holes. Using a combination of analytic and numerical techniques we also calculate the transition of the real part of the quasinormal mode frequency from the Reissne…
The Reissner-Nordström black hole solution in a generic cosmological constant background in the the context of Rastall gravity is obtained. It is shown that the cosmological constant arises naturally from the consistency of the non-vacuum field equations of the Rastall theory for a spherical symmetric spacetime, rather than its {\it ad-hoc} introduction in the usual Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell field equations. The usual Reissner-Nordström, Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-(anti)de Sitter black hole solutions in the framework of this theory are also addressed as the special independent subclas…
We consider the thermodynamics of minimally coupled massive scalar field in 3+1 dimensional constant curvature black hole background. The brick wall model of 't Hooft is used. When Schwarzschild like coordinates are used it is found that two radial brick wall cut-off parameters are required to regularize the solution. Free energy of the scalar field is obtained through counting of states using the WKB approximation. It is found that the free energy and the entropy are divergent in both the cut-off parameters.
The accretion of relativistic and non-relativistic fluids into a Reissner-Nordström black hole is revisited. The position of the critical point, the flow velocity at this point and the accretion rate are only slightly affected with respect to the Schwarzschild case when the fluid is non-relativistic. On the contrary, relativistic fluids cross the critical point always subsonically. In this case, the sonic point is located near the event horizon, which is crossed by the fluid with a velocity less than the light speed. The accretion rate of relativistic fluids by a Reissner-Nordström black hole …
We quantize the low-energy sector of a massless scalar field in the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime. This allows the analysis of processes involving soft scalar particles occurring outside charged black holes. In particular, we compute the response of a static scalar source interacting with Hawking radiation using the Unruh (and the Hartle-Hawking) vacuum. This response is compared with the one obtained when the source is uniformly accelerated in the usual vacuum of the Minkowski spacetime with the same proper acceleration. We show that both responses are in general different in opposition to the…
We study thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of a five-dimensional Schwarzschild AdS black hole in $AdS_5\times{S^5}$ spacetime by treating the cosmological constant as the number of colors in the boundary gauge theory and its conjugate quantity as the associated chemical potential. It is found that the chemical potential is always negative in the stable branch of black hole thermodynamics and it has a chance to be positive, but appears in the unstable branch. We calculate scalar curvatures of the thermodynamical Weinhold metric, Ruppeiner metric and Quevedo metric, respectively and we f…
Hiscock and Weems showed that there is an attractor behavior in the evolution of asymptotically flat Reissner-Nordström black hole under Hawking evaporation. If the initial charge-to-mass ratio $Q/M$ of the black hole is relatively small, then the ratio first increases until the black hole hits the attractor, and then starts to discharge towards the Schwarzschild limit. Sufficiently charged black holes, on the other hand, simply discharge steadily towards the Schwarzschild limit. In this work we further investigate the nature of the attractor, and found that it is characterized by the mass los…
The p-hierarchy of Schwarzschild type metrics obtained in a preceing paper is generalised here to a corresponding Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) type hierarchy in the presence of a point charge q in d-dimensions. Certain special features arising, concerning the horizons and the interior region, are discussed.
The holographic entanglement entropies (HEE) associated with four dimensional Schwarzschild and Reisner-Nordström black holes in asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes are investigated. Unlike the cases of asymptotically AdS spacetimes for which the boundaries are always taken at (timelike) conformal infinities, we take the boundaries at either large but finite radial coordinate (far boundary) or very close to the black hole event horizons (near horizon boundary). The reason for such choices is that such boundaries are similar to the conformal infinity of AdS spacetime in that they are all timeli…
