Let $k$ be an $F$-finite field containing an infinite perfect field of positive characteristic. Let $(X, Δ)$ be a projective log canonical pair over $k$. In this note we show that, for a semi-ample divisor $D$ on $X$, there exists an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor $Δ' \sim_{\mathbb Q} Δ+D$ such that $(X, Δ')$ is log canonical if there exists a log resolution of $(X, Δ)$.
We study the geometry and cohomology of semiample hypersurfaces in toric varieties. Such hypersurfaces generalize the MPCP-desingularizations of Calabi-Yau ample hypersurfaces in the Batyrev mirror construction. We study the topological cup product on the middle cohomology of semiample hypersurfaces. In particular, we obtain a complete algebraic description of the middle cohomology of regular semiample hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional simplicial toric varieties what would be interesting for physics.
We prove that the anti-canonical divisors of weak Fano 3-folds with log canonical singularities are semiample. Moreover, we consider semiampleness of the anti-log canonical divisor of any weak log Fano pair with log canonical singularities. We show semiampleness dose not hold in general by constructing several examples. Based on those examples, we propose sufficient conditions which seem to be the best possible and we prove semiampleness under such conditions. In particular we derive semiampleness of the anti-canonical divisors of log canonical weak Fano 4-folds whose lc centers are at most 1-…
We give another alternative proof to the Kawamata semiampleness theorem for the log canonical divisors on klt varieties which are nef and abundant. After the first version of this article was posted to the e-print Arxiv, Prof. Fujino notified the author that the quick and essential proof ([Fujino. On Kawamata's theorem.(EMS 2011), Rem 2.7]) is already known. The author would like to thank him. More precisely, Prof. Fujino already gave the quick and essential proof ([Fujino. On Kawamata's thm.(EMS 2011), Rem 2.7], [Fujino. Finite generation of the lc ring in dim 4. (Kyoto J. Math. 50 (2010)), R…
We study the B-model chiral ring of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in Batyrev's mirror construction. The main result is an explicit description of a subring of the chiral ring of semiample regular (transversal to torus orbits) Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This subring includes the marginal operators and contains all information about the correlation functions used by physicists. Computation of the chiral ring passes through a description of cohomology of semiample hypersurfaces. Here, we develop the techniques for calculating of the cohomology of resolutions.
We show that "non-polynomial" deformations of semiample (minimal) nondegenerate Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties can be realized as quasismooth complete intersections in higher dimensional simplicial toric varieties.
We solved the long-standing problem of describing the cohomology ring of semiample hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties. Also, the monomial-divisor mirror map is generalized to a map between the whole Picard group and the space of infinitesimal deformations for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This map is compatible with certain vanishing limiting products of the subrings of the chiral rings, on which the ring structure is related to a product of the roots of $A$-type Lie algebra.
Let $(X,Δ)$ be a pair. We study how the condition $κ(K_X + Δ)=0$ causes surjectivity or birationality of the Albanese map and the Albanese morphism of $X$ in both characteristic $0$ and characteristic $p > 0$. In particular in characteristic $0$ we generalize Kawamata's result to the cases of log canonial pairs, and in characteristic $p>0$ we generalize a result of Hacon-Patakfalvi to the cases of log pairs. Moreover we show that if $X$ is a normal projective threefold in characteristic $p>0$, the coefficients of the components of $Δ$ are $\le 1$ and $-(K_X+Δ)$ is semiample, then the Albanese …
Let $f:\,X \to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a non-isotrivial semi-stable family of varieties of dimension $m$ over $\mathbb{P}^1$ with $s$ singular fibers. Assume that the smooth fibers $F$ are minimal, i.e., their canonical line bundles are semiample. Then $κ(X)\leq κ(F)+1$. If $κ(X)=κ(F)+1$, then $s>\frac{4}m+2$. If $κ(X)\geq 0$, then $s\geq\frac{4}m+2$. In particular, if $m=1$, $s=6$ and $κ(X)=0$, then the family $f$ is Teichmüller.
Let X be a projective variety, possibly singular. A generalized Albanese variety of X was constructed by Esnault, Srinivas and Viehweg over algebraically closed base field as a universal regular quotient of the relative Chow group of 0-cycles by Levine-Weibel. In this paper, we obtain a functorial description of the Albanese of Esnault-Srinivas-Viehweg over a perfect base field, using duality theory of 1-motives with unipotent part.
For an $\ell$-adic sheaf on a variety of arbitrary dimension over a perfect field, we define the Swan class measuring the wild ramification as a 0-cycle class supported on the ramification locus. We prove a Lefschetz trace formula for open varieties and a generalization of the Grothendieck-Ogg-Shararevich formula using the Swan class.
Perfect quadratic forms give a toroidal compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian g-folds that is Q-factorial and whose ample classes are characterized, over any base. In characteristic zero it has canonical singularities if g is at least 5, and is the canonical model (in the sense of Mori and Reid) if g is at least 12.
We prove that abelian varieties of small dimension over discrete valuated, stricty henselian ground fields with perfect residue class field obtain semistable reduction after a tamely ramified extension of the ground field. Using this result we obtain perfectness results for Grothendieck's pairing.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p>0$ not necessarily perfect. Using Berthelot's theory of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules, we construct a $p$-adic formalism of Grothendieck's six operations for realizable $k$-schemes of finite type.
We classify the $\mathbb{G}_{a}$-actions on normal affine varieties defined over any field that are horizontal with respect to a torus action of complexity one. This generalizes previous results that were available for perfect ground fields (cf. [Flenner-Zaidenberg2005, Liendo2010, L-Liendo2016]).
A perfect PAC field containing an algebraically closed field is known to be $C_1$, i.e., every degeneration of a Fano complete intersection has a point. We prove that also every degeneration of a separably rationally connected variety has a point.
We classify almost homogeneous normal varieties of Albanese codimension $1$, defined over an arbitrary field. We prove that such a variety has a unique normal equivariant completion. Over a perfect field, the group scheme of automorphisms of this completion is smooth, except in one case in characteristic $2$, and we determine its (reduced) neutral component.
Let $\V$ be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field $k$. We solve Berthelot's conjectures on the stability of the holonomicity over smooth projective formal $\V$-schemes. Then we build a category of complexes of arithmetic $\D$-modules over quasi-projective $k$-varieties with bounded, $F$-holonomic cohomology. We get its stability under Grothendieck's six operations.
We prove that smooth, projective, $K$-trivial, weakly ordinary varieties over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$ are not geometrically uniruled. We also show a singular version of our theorem, which is sharp in multiple aspects. Our work, together with Langer's results, implies that varieties of the above type have strongly semistable tangent bundles with respect to any polarization.
We use Totaro's examples of non-semiample nef line bundles on smooth projective surfaces over finite fields to construct nef line bundles for which the first cohomology group cannot be killed by any generically finite covers. This is used to show a similar example of a nef and big line bundle on a smooth projective threefold over a finite field. This improves some examples of Bhatt and answers some of his questions. Finally, we prove a new vanishing theorem for the first cohomology group of strictly nef line bundles on projective varieties defined over finite fields.
Let $X$ be a proper smooth toric variety over a perfectoid field of prime residue characteristic $p$. We study the perfectoid space $\mathcal{X}^{perf}$ which covers $X$ constructed by Scholze, showing that $\text{Pic}(\mathcal{X}^{perf})$ is canonically isomorphic to $\text{Pic}(X)[p^{-1}]$. We also compute the cohomology of line bundles on $\mathcal{X}^{perf}$ and establish analogs of Demazure and Batyrev-Borisov vanishing. This generalizes the first author's analogous results for "projectivoid space".
The cohomological dimension of a field is the largest degree with non-vanishing Galois cohomology. Serre's "Conjecture II" predicts that for every perfect field of cohomological dimension $2$, every torsor over the field for a semisimple, simply connected algebraic group is trivial. A field is perfect and "pseudo algebraically closed" (PAC) if every geometrically irreducible curve over the field has a rational point. These have cohomological dimension $1$. Every transcendence degree $1$ extension of such a field has cohomological degree $2$. We prove Serre's "Conjecture II" for such fields of …
Let $G$ be a semi-simple algebraic group over a perfect field $k$. A lot of progress has been made recently in computing the Chow motives of projective $G$-homogenous varieties. When $k$ has positive characteristic, a broader class of $G$-homogeneous varieties appear. These are varieties over which $G$ acts transitively with possibly non-reduced isotropy subgroup. In this paper we study these varieties which we call ${\it \mbox{projective pseudo-homogeneous varieties}}$ for $G$ inner type over $k$ and prove that their motives satisfy Rost nilpotence. We also find their motivic decompositions a…
We show that every connected commutative algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 is the Picard variety of some projective variety, obtained by pinching a smooth variety along a finite subscheme. In contrast, no Witt group of dimension at least 3 over a perfect field of prime characteristic is isogenous to the Picard variety obtained by this construction.
Let X be a smooth proper variety over a perfect field k of arbitrary characteristic. Let D be an effective divisor on X with multiplicity. We introduce an Albanese variety Alb(X, D) of X of modulus D as a higher dimensional analogon of the generalized Jacobian of Rosenlicht-Serre with modulus for smooth proper curves. Basing on duality of 1-motives with unipotent part (which are introduced here), we obtain explicit and functorial descriptions of these generalized Albanese varieties and their dual functors. We define a relative Chow group of zero cycles w.r.t. the modulus D and show that Alb(X,…
Over a field of positive characteristic, a semisimple algebraic group $G$ may have some nonreduced parabolic subgroup $P$. In this paper, we study the Schubert and Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) varieties of $G/P$, with $P$ nonreduced, when the base field is perfect. It is shown that in general the Schubert and BSDH varieties of such a $G/P$ are not normal, and the projection of the BSDH variety onto the Schubert variety has nonreduced fibers at closed points. When the base field is finite, the generalized convolution morphisms between BSDH varieties are also studied. It is shown that th…
Let $A_K$ be an abelian variety with semistable reduction over a strictly henselian field of positive characteristic with perfect residue class field. We show that there is a close connection between the pairings of Grothendieck, Bester/Bertapelle and Shafarevic. In particular, we show that the pairing of Bester/Bertapelle can be used to describe the $p$-part of Grothendieck's pairing in the semistable reduction case, thus proving a conjecture of Bertapelle.
Assume that R is a local regular ring containing an infinite perfect field, or that R is the local ring of a point on a smooth scheme over an infinite field. Let K be the field of fractions of R and the characteristic of K is not 2. Let X be an exceptional projective homogeneous scheme over R. We prove that in most cases the condition that X has a K-point implies that X has an R-point.
We present a notion of $Δ$-stability and stability filtration in arbitrary categories which is equivalent to the existence of Harder-Narasimhan (HN) sequences on objects. Indeed it is equivalent to the existence of a zero morphism, a partial order on objects, and a collection of some universal sequences. In additive categories embedded in an ambient triangulated category, we could obtain a numerical polynomial or central charge of objects by calculating the Euler characteristic of slope sequences and objects, inducing a partial order and HN sequences. In the case of normal projective surfaces …
Given any field $k$ (not necessarily perfect), we study the smoothing of a semistable Fano variety over $k$. In characteristic 0, the reduced semistable Fano degenerate fibers of Mori fibrations are classified. In positive characteristic, under a suitable $W_2$ lifting assumption, we prove that a semistable Fano variety always appears as a degenerate fiber in a semistable family if it has a global log structure (in the sense of Fontaine-Illusie-Kato) of semistable type. A similar smoothing result over a mixed characteristic base is also obtained.
We prove the following result of Bondal's: that there is a fully faithful embedding $κ$ of the perfect derived category of a proper toric variety into the derived category of constructible sheaves on a compact torus. We compare this result to a torus-equivariant version considered in joint work with Fang, Liu, and Zaslow. There we showed that in the torus-equivariant version the image of the embedding is cut out by microlocal conditions. To establish a similar characterization of the image of $κ$ is an open problem.
We study the motivic Serre invariant of a smoothly bounded algebraic or rigid variety $X$ over a complete discretely valued field $K$ with perfect residue field $k$. If $K$ has characteristic zero, we extend the definition to arbitrary $K$-varieties using Bittner's presentation of the Grothendieck ring and a process of Néron smoothening of pairs of varieties. The motivic Serre invariant can be considered as a measure for the set of unramified points on $X$. Under certain tameness conditions, it admits a cohomological interpretation by means of a trace formula. In the curve case, we use T. Sait…
A conjecture of Orlov predicts that derived equivalent smooth projective varieties over a field have isomorphic Chow motives. The conjecture is known for curves, and was recently observed for surfaces by Huybrechts. In this paper we focus on threefolds over perfect fields, and unconditionally secure results, which are implied by Orlov's conjecture, concerning the geometric coniveau filtration, and abelian varieties attached to smooth projective varieties.
We obtain, by a direct computation, explicit descriptions of all principally polarized semi-abelic varieties of torus rank up to 3. We describe the geometry of their symmetric theta divisors and obtain explicit formulas for the involution and its fixed points. These results allow us to give a new proof of the statements about the dimensions, for small genus, of the loci of ppav with theta divisor containing two-torsion points of multiplicity three. We also prove a result about the closure of this set. Our computations used in our work arXiv:1103.1857 to compute the class of the closure of the …
For a separated scheme $X$ of finite type over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ which admits an immersion into a proper smooth scheme over the truncated Witt ring $W_{n}$, we define the bounded derived category of locally finitely generated unit $F$-crystals with finite Tor-dimension on $X$ over $W_{n}$, independently of the choice of the immersion. Then we prove the anti-equivalence of this category with the bounded derived category of constructible étale sheaves of ${\mathbb Z}/{p^{n}{\mathbb Z}}$-modules with finite Tor dimension. We also discuss the relationship of $t$-structure…
In this paper, we formulate and prove a duality for cohomology of curves over perfect fields of positive characteristic with coefficients in Neron models of abelian varieties. This is a global function field version of the author's previous work on local duality and Grothendieck's duality conjecture. It generalizes the perfectness of the Cassels-Tate pairing in the finite base field case. The proof uses the local duality mentioned above, Artin-Milne's global finite flat duality, the non-degeneracy of the height pairing and finiteness of crystalline cohomology. All these ingredients are organiz…
We apply the techniques developed in our previous work with Leung to study smoothings of a pair $(X,\mathfrak{C}^*)$, where $\mathfrak{C}^*$ is a bounded perfect complex of locally free sheaves over a degenerate Calabi-Yau variety $X$. In particular, if $X$ is a projective Calabi-Yau variety admitting the structure of a toroidal crossing space and with the higher tangent sheaf $\mathcal{T}^1_X$ globally generated, and $\mathfrak{F}$ is a locally free sheaf over $X$, then we prove, using the recent results of Felten-Filip-Ruddat, that the pair $(X,\mathfrak{F})$ is formally smoothable when $\te…
Over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$, we construct a ``Witt vector cohomology with compact supports'' for separated $k$-schemes of finite type, extending (after tensorisation with $\mathbb{Q}$) the classical theory for proper $k$-schemes. We define a canonical morphism from rigid cohomology with compact supports to Witt vector cohomology with compact supports, and we prove that it provides an identification between the latter and the slope $< 1$ part of the former. Over a finite field, this allows one to compute congruences for the number of rational points in special examples. I…
We study special values of zeta functions of singular varieties over finite fields. We give a new formula of special values by constructing a morphism of homology theories, which we call regulator, from higher Chow group to weight homology. Our regulator is defined by using the notion of weight complex for varieties over a perfect field, which was introduced by Gillet and Soule. The main idea of the proof of our formula of special values is to use weight spectral sequence of homology theories, whose E1 terms are homology groups for smooth projective schemes. Also, to calculate special values, …
We study a class of varieties which generalize the classical orbital varieties of Joseph. We show that our generalized orbital varieties are the irreducible components of a Mirkovic-Vybornov slice to a nilpotent orbit, and can be labeled by semistandard Young tableaux. Furthermore, we prove that Mirkovic-Vilonen cycles are obtained by applying the Mirkovic-Vybornov isomorphism to generalized orbital varieties and taking a projective closure, refining Mirkovic and Vybornov's result. As a consequence, we are able to use the Lusztig datum of a Mirkovic--Vilonen cycle to determine the tableau labe…
In this paper we describe the relationship between the finite free resolutions of perfect ideals in split format (for Dynkin formats) and certain intersections of opposite Schubert varieties with the big cell for homogeneous spaces $G/P$ where $P$ is a maximal parabolic subgroup.
We study Torelli-type theorems in the Zariski topology for varieties of dimension at least 2, over arbitrary fields. In place of the Hodge structure, we use the linear equivalence relation on Weil divisors. Using this setup, we prove a universal Torelli theorem in the sense of Bogomolov and Tschinkel. The proofs rely heavily on new variants of the classical Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry of Veblen and Young. For proper normal varieties over uncountable algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0, we show that the Zariski topological space can be used to recover the linear equiv…
We define an overconvergent version of the Hyodo-Kato complex for semistable varieties $Y$ over perfect fields of positive characteristic, and prove that its hypercohomology tensored with $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers the log-rigid cohomology when $Y$ is quasi-projective. We then describe the monodromy operator using the overconvergent Hyodo-Kato complex. Finally, we show that overconvergent Hyodo-Kato cohomology agrees with log-crystalline cohomology in the projective semistable case.
Chevalley's theorem states that every smooth connected algebraic group over a perfect field is an extension of an abelian variety by a smooth connected affine group. That fails when the base field is not perfect. We define a pseudo-abelian variety over an arbitrary field k to be a smooth connected k-group in which every smooth connected affine normal k-subgroup is trivial. This gives a new point of view on the classification of algebraic groups: every smooth connected group over a field is an extension of a pseudo-abelian variety by a smooth connected affine group, in a unique way. We work out…
We use knowledge of local fields to adapt Jonathan Lubin and Michael Rosen's proof of Mazur's Proposition 4.39. This changes the result about abelian varieties from only working over local fields with a finite residue field to working with local fields with an arbitrary perfect residue field of positive characteristic. We then briefly discuss the Local Class Field Theory implications of such information
We develop a theory of affine flag varieties and of their Schubert varieties for reductive groups over a Laurent power series local field k((t)) with k a perfect field. This can be viewed as a generalization of the theory of affine flag varieties for loop groups to a "twisted case"; a consequence of our results is that our construction also includes the flag varieties for Kac-Moody Lie algebras of affine type. We also give a coherence conjecture on the dimensions of the spaces of global sections of the natural ample line bundles on the partial flag varieties attached to a fixed group over k((t…
