Analysis of solar radius measurements acquired by the Michelson Doppler Imager on the SOHO spacecraft supports previously reported evidence of solar internal r-mode oscillations in Mt Wilson radius data and in nuclear-decay data acquired at the Lomonosov Moscow State University. The frequencies of these oscillations are compatible with oscillations in a putative inner tachocline that separates a slowly rotating core from the radiative envelope.
Long (up to 100 hours) time series of SOHO/MDI Doppler data are analyzed. The power spectrum of radial velocity time series in the quiet photosphere is observed to have, along with the known 5-min mode, a stable strong mode with a period of about 32 h, which is close to the supergranulation cell lifetime. The spatial distribution of the amplitudes of these oscillations also coincides with the characteristic size scale of supergranulation (~35 Mm).
Rotation of the leading sunspot of active region NOAA 10421 was investigated using magnetograms and Dopplergrams from the MDI instrument of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), and white-light images from the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE). The vertical, radial, and azimuthal axisymmetrical components of both magnetic and velocity field vectors were reconstructed for the sunspot umbra and penumbra. All three components of both vectors in the umbra and penumbra show torsional oscillations with the same rotational period of about 3.8 days. The TRACE white-light data als…
The first observations of seismic responses to solar flares were carried out using time-distance (TD) and holography techniques applied to SOHO/MDI Dopplergrams obtained from space and un-affected by terrestrial atmospheric disturbances. However, the ground-based network GONG is potentially a very valuable source of sunquake observations, especially in cases where space observations are unavailable. In this paper we present updated technique for pre-processing of GONG observations for application of subjacent vantage holography. Using this method and TD diagrams we investigate several sunquake…
We processed magnetograms that were obtained with the Michaelson Doppler Imager onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO/MDI). The results confirm the basic properties of long-period oscillations of sunspots that have previously been established and also reveal new properties. We show that the limiting (lowest) eigenmode of low-frequency oscillations of a sunspot as a whole is the mode with a period of 10 - 12 up to 32 - 35 hours (depending on the sunspot's magnetic- field strength). This mode is observed consistently throughout the observation period 5 - 7 days, but its amplitude …
Comparisons of solar magnetic-field measurements made in different spectral lines are very important, especially in those lines in which observations have a long history or(and) specific diagnostic significance. The spectral lines FeI 523.3 nm and FeI525.0 nm belong to this class. Therefore, this study is devoted to a comprehensive analysis using new high-precision Stokes-meter full-disk observations. The disk-averaged magnetic-field strength ratio R = B(523.3)/B(525.0) equals 1.97 +- 0.02. The center-to-limb variation (CLV) is R = 1.74 - 2.43 mu + 3.43 mu^2, where mu is the cosine of the cent…
Time-distance helioseismology is one of the primary tools for studying the solar meridional circulation. However, travel-time measurements of the subsurface meridional flow suffer from a variety of systematic errors, such as a center-to-limb variation and an offset due to the P-angle uncertainty of solar images. Here we apply the time-distance technique to contemporaneous medium-degree Dopplergrams produced by SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI to obtain the travel-time difference caused by meridional circulation throughout the solar convection zone. The P-angle offset in MDI images is measured by cross-cor…
Continuum intensity observations obtained with the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on-board the SoHO mission provide long time series of filtergrams that are ideal for studying the evolution of large-scale phenomena in the solar atmosphere and their dependence on solar activity. These filtergrams, however, are not taken in a pure continuum spectral band, but are constructed from a proxy, namely a combination of filtergrams sampling the Ni I 676.8 nm line. We studied the sensitivity of this continuum proxy to the shape of the nickel line and to the degradation in the instrumental transmission pr…
The variation of solar irradiance is one of the natural forcing mechanisms of the terrestrial climate. Hence, the time-dependent solar irradiance is an important input parameter for climate modelling. The solar surface magnetic field is a powerful proxy for solar irradiance reconstruction. The analyses of data obtained with the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on board the SOHO mission are therefore useful for the identification of solar surface magnetic features to be used in solar irradiance reconstruction models. However, there is still a need for automated technologies that would enable the …
Solar magnetic fields are generated in the solar interior and pop up at the solar surface to form active regions. As the magnetic field appears on the surface, it forms various structures like small magnetic elements, pores, and sunspots. The nature of these formation processes is largely unknown. In this contribution we elaborate on the formation of sunspots and particularly on the formation of penumbrae. We report on observations that we obtained at the German VTT on July 4, 2009 on the formation of the spot in AR 11024. This data set is accomplished with data from SOHO/MDI which offers an e…
Towards a live homogeneous database of solar active regions based on SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI synoptic magnetograms. I. Automatic detection and calibration
A specific type of artifacts, that originate due to displacement of the image of a moving object along the digital (pixel) matrix of receiver are analyzed in detail. The criteria of appearance and the influence of these artifacts on the study of long-term oscillations of sunspots are deduced. The obtained criteria suggest us methods for reduction or even elimination of these artifacts. It is shown that the use of integral parameters can be very effective against the artifact distortions. The simultaneous observations of sunspot magnetic field and ultraviolet intensity of the umbra have given t…
Total and spectral solar irradiance are key parameters in the assessment of solar influence on changes in the Earth's climate. We present a reconstruction of daily solar irradiance obtained using the SATIRE-S model spanning 1974 to 2013 based on full-disc observations from the KPVT, SoHO/MDI and SDO/HMI. SATIRE-S ascribes variation in solar irradiance on timescales greater than a day to photospheric magnetism. The solar spectrum is reconstructed from the apparent surface coverage of bright magnetic features and sunspots in the daily data using the modelled intensity spectra of these magnetic s…
We compare photospheric line-of-sight magnetograms from the Synoptic Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) vector spectromagnetograph (VSM) instrument with observations from the 150-foot Solar Tower at Mt. Wilson (MWO), Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). We find very good agreement between VSM and the other data sources for both disk-averaged flux densities and pixel-by-pixel measurements. We show that the VSM mean flux density time series is of consistently high sign…
The magnetic flux that is generated by dynamo inside the Sun emerges in the form of bipolar magnetic regions. We have analyzed the whole set of solar magnetograms obtained with the SOHO/MDI instrument in 1995-2011, and automatically identified 160,079 bipolar magnetic regions that span a range of scale sizes across nearly four orders of magnitude. Their properties have been statistically analyzed, in particular with respect to the polarity orientations of the bipolar regions, including their tilt angle distributions. The latitude variation of the average tilt angles (with respect to the E-W di…

The south-north travel-time differences are measured by applying time-distance helioseismology to the MDI and HMI medium-degree Dopplergrams covering May 1996-April 2017. Our data analysis corrects for several sources of systematic effects: P-angle error, surface magnetic field effects, and center-to-limb variations. An interpretation of the travel-time measurements is obtained using a forward-modeling approach in the ray approximation. The travel-time differences are similar in the southern hemisphere for cycles 23 and 24. However, they differ in the northern hemisphere between cycles 23 and …
The generation of magnetic flux in the solar interior and its transport to the outer solar atmosphere will be in the focus of solar physics research for the next decades. One key-ingredient is the process of magnetic flux emergence into the solar photosphere, and the reorganization to form the magnetic phenomena of active regions like sunspots and pores. On July 4, 2009, we observed a region of emerging magnetic flux, in which a proto-spot without penumbra forms a penumbra within some 4.5 hours. This process is documented by multi-wavelength observations at the German VTT: (a) imaging, (b) dat…
Toward a live homogeneous database of solar active regions based on SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI synoptic magnetograms.II.parameters for solar cycle variability
In our previous articles (Chertok et al.: 2013, Solar Phys. 282, 175, and 2015, Solar Phys. 290, 627), we presented a preliminary tool for the early diagnostics of the geoeffectiveness of solar eruptions based on the estimate of the total unsigned line-of-sight photospheric magnetic flux in accompanying extreme-ultraviolet arcades and dimmings. This tool was based on the analysis of eruptions observed in 1996-2005 with SOHO/EIT and MDI. Empirical relationships were obtained to estimate the probable importance of upcoming space weather disturbances caused by an eruption, which just occurred, wi…
Searches for exoplanets with radial velocity techniques are increasingly sensitive to stellar activity. It is therefore crucial to characterize how this activity influences radial velocity measurements in their study of the detectability of planets in these conditions. In a previous work we simulated the impact of spots and plages on the radial velocity of the Sun. Our objective is to compare this simulation with the observed radial velocity of the Sun for the same period. We use Dopplergrams and magnetograms obtained by MDI/SOHO over one solar cycle to reconstruct the solar integrated radial …
The global oscillations of the Sun are investigated on the base of three independent sets of data: 1. Records of Total Solar Irradiance (TSI). 2. The average brightness of the photosphere in MDI (SOHO) and HMI (SDO) images. 3. Records of the time variations of sunlight reflected from the planets during their passage in the field of view of the LASCO C3 coronagraph. It is found that in the low-frequency spectrum of solar oscillations as a star there are modes of 8-10, 36-38 hours and the main stable 9-day mode. The last mode can be regarded as a reflection of oscillatory processes near the fast…
Was defined reconnection rate of solar flares observed with the SOHO Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI). Measured physical parameters of 15 flares, such as the temporal scale, size and magnetic flux density. Estimated reconnection inflow velocity, coronal Alfven velocity, and reconnection rate using the observed values.
We present a new data product, called Space-Weather MDI Active Region Patches (SMARPs), derived from maps of the solar surface magnetic field taken by the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO). Together with the Space-Weather HMI Active Region Patches (SHARPs), derived from similar maps taken by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory, these data provide a continuous and seamless set of maps and keywords that describe every active region observed over the last two solar cycles, from 1996 to the present day. …
The primary task of the Debrecen Heliophysical Observatory (DHO) has been the most detailed, reliable, and precise documentation of the solar photospheric activity since 1958. This long-term effort resulted in various solar catalogs based on ground-based and space-borne observations. A series of sunspot databases and on-line tools were compiled at DHO: the Debrecen Photoheliographic Data (DPD, 1974--), the dataset based on the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) called SOHO/MDI--Debrecen Data (SDD, 1996--2010), and the dataset based on the Helioseism…
The best known Solar oscillation-like star is the Sun. During the last 14 years, the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO) has been continuously observing this star from the Lagrange point L1 with an enormous success. Among the 11 instruments placed onboard, 3 of them are dedicated to helioseismology: GOLF, VIRGO and MDI. The first two observe the Sun as a star by integrating the velocity or intensity signal of the visible solar disk into a single point. They are thus similar to any other observation done in asteroseismology. During this review I will present the most important re…
The study of low-degree high-frequency waves in the Sun can provide new insight into the dynamics of the deeper layers of the Sun. Here, we present the analysis of the velocity observations of the Sun obtained from the Michelson and Doppler Imager (MDI) and Global Oscillations at Low Frequency (GOLF) instruments on board Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft for the major flare event of 2003 October 28 during the solar cycle 23. We have applied wavelet transform to the time series of disk-integrated velocity signals from the solar surface using the full-disk Dopplergrams obtaine…
In this paper, we present a study of an M2.2 class solar flare of 26 November 2000 from NOAA AR 9236. The flare was well observed by various ground based observatories (ARIES, Learmonths Solar Observatory) and space borne instruments (SOHO, HXRS, GOES) in time interval between 02:30 UT to 04:00 UT. The flare started with long arc-shape outer flare ribbon. Afterwards the main flare starts with two main ribbons. Initially the outer ribbons start to expand with an average speed ($\sim$ 20 km s$^{-1}$) and later it shows contraction. The flare was associated with partial halo coronal mass ejection…
In a recent paper (Straus et al. 2008) we determined the energy flux of internal gravity waves in the lower solar atmosphere using a combination of 3D numerical simulations and observations obtained with the IBIS instrument operated at the Dunn Solar Telescope and the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on SOHO. In this paper we extend these studies using coordinated observations from SOT/NFI and SOT/SP on Hinode and MDI. The new measurements confirm that gravity waves are the dominant phenomenon in the quiet middle/upper photosphere and that they transport more mechanical energy than the high-freq…
In this letter, we explore the relationship between the solar seismic radius and total solar irradiance (TSI) during last two solar cycles using the uninterrupted data from space-borne instruments onboard {\it SoHO} and {\it SDO}. The seismic radius is calculated from the fundamental ({\it f}) modes of solar oscillations utilizing the observations from {\it SoHO}/MDI and {\it SDO}/HMI, and the total solar irradiance measurements are obtained from {\it SoHO}/VIRGO. Our study suggests that the major contribution to the TSI variation arises from the changes in magnetic field while the radius vari…
Thirty-four years of WSO (Wilcox Solar Observatory) and thirteen years of SOHO/MDI (Michelson Doppler Imager on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) magnetograms have been studied to measure the east-west inclination angle, indicating the toroidal component of the photospheric magnetic field. This analysis reveals that the large-scale toroidal component of the global magnetic field is antisymmetric around the equator and reverses direction in regions associated with flux from one solar cycle compared to the next. The toroidal field revealed the first early signs of cycle 24 at high latitude…
We analyze intermediate degree p- and f-mode eigenfrequencies measured by GONG and MDI/SOHO for a complete solar cycle to study their correlation with solar activity. We demonstrate that the frequencies do vary linearly with the activity, however the degree of correlation differs from phase to phase of the cycle. During the rising and the declining phases, the mode frequencies are strongly correlated with the activity proxies whereas during the low- and high-activity periods, the frequencies have significantly lower correlation with all the activity proxies considered here.
The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is designed to study oscillations and the mag- netic field in the solar photosphere. It observes the full solar disk in the Fe I absorption line at 6173Å. We use the output of a high-resolution 3D, time- dependent, radiation-hydrodynamic simulation based on the CO5BOLD code to calculate profiles F(λ,x,y,t) for the Fe I 6173Å line. The emerging profiles F(λ,x,y,t) are multiplied by a representative set of HMI filter transmission profiles R_i(λ,1 \leq i \leq 6) and filtergrams I_i(x,y,t;1 \leq i \leq 6) are c…
The Sun's axisymmetric flows, differential rotation and meridional flow, govern the dynamics of the solar magnetic cycle and variety of methods are used to measure these flows, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Flow measurements based on cross-correlating images of the surface magnetic field have been made since the 1970s which require advanced numerical techniques that are capable of detecting movements of less than the pixel size in images of the Sun. We have identified several systematic errors in addition to the center-to-limb effect that influence previous measurements of these …
Using the observations from Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) onboard Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), we develop a computational algorithm to automatically identify the bipolar magnetic regions (BMRs) in the active regions, and then study their statistical properties. The individual magnetic (positive or negative) pole of the BMR is determined from the region with an absolute strength above 55 G and with an area above 250 pixel^2 (495 Mm^2), while a BMR is identified as a pair of positive and negative poles with a shortest area-weight distance between them. Based on this method, 2234 B…
Today's picture of the internal solar rotation rate profile results essentially from helioseismic analyses of frequency splittings of resonant acoustic waves. Here we present another, complementary estimation of the internal solar rotation rate using the perturbation of the shape of the acoustic waves. For this purpose, we extend a global helioseismic approach developed previously for the investigation of the meridional flow \cite{schad11, schad12, schad13} to work on the components of the differential rotation. We discuss the effect of rotation on mode eigenfunctions and thereon based observa…

Adiabatic oscillation frequencies of stellar models, computed with the standard mixing-length formulation for convection, increasingly deviate with radial order from observations in solar-like stars. Standard solar models overestimate adiabatic frequencies by as much as ~ 20 μHz. In this letter, we address the physical processes of turbulent convection that are predominantly responsible for the frequency differences between standard models and observations, also called `surface effects'. We compare measured solar frequencies from the MDI instrument on the SOHO spacecraft with frequency calcula…
Fossat et al. (2017) recently reported detecting rotational splitting of g modes indirectly via the interaction with p modes observed directly by the GOLF instrument on SOHO. They concluded that the core of the Sun is rotating 3:8 ? 0:1 times faster than the surrounding radiative envelope. This is startling, partly because such rapid rotation almost contradicts direct inferences from the p-mode rotational splitting inferred from the same data. Moreover, the inferred amplitudes of the g modes appear to exceed the upper bound reported by Appourchaux et al. (2010). It is also suspect because the …
We produce a 10-day series of simulated Doppler images at a 15-minute cadence that reproduces the spatial and temporal characteristics seen in the SOHO/MDI Doppler data. Our simulated data contains a spectrum of cellular flows with but two necessary components --- a granule component that peaks at wavenumbers of about 4000 and a supergranule component that peaks at wavenumbers of about 110. We include the advection of these cellular components by a differential rotation profile that depends on latitude and wavenumber (depth). We further mimic the evolution of the cellular pattern by introducin…
In this article we describe a recent effort to cross-calibrate data from an infrared detector at the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope and the Facility InfraRed Spectropolarimeter (FIRS) at the Dunn Solar Telescope. A synoptic observation program at the McMath-Pierce has measured umbral magnetic field strengths since 1998, and this data set has recently been compared with umbral magnetic field observations from SOHO MDI and SDO HMI. To further improve on the data from McMath-Pierce, we compared the data with measurements taken at the Dunn Solar Telescope with far greater spectral resolution than h…
Since the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) began recording ~ 1 TB of data per day, there has been an increased need to automatically extract features and events for further analysis. Here we compare the overall detection performance, correlations between extracted properties, and usability for feature tracking of four solar feature-detection algorithms: the Solar Monitor Active Region Tracker (SMART) detects active regions in line-of-sight magnetograms; the Automated Solar Activity Prediction code (ASAP) detects sunspots and pores in white-light continuum images; the Sunspot Tracking And Recog…
In the past, there have been many studies claiming that the effects of geomagnetic storms strongly depends on the orientation of the magnetic-cloud part of the Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). Aparna & Martens (2020), using Halo-CME data from 2007-2017, have shown that the magnetic field orientation of filaments at the location where CMEs originate can be effectively used for predicting the onset of geo-magnetic storms. The purpose of this study is to extend their survey by analyzing the halo-CME data for 1996-2006. The correlation of filament axial direction and their corresponding Bz signature…
The long term study of the Sun is necessary if we are to determine the evolution of sunspot properties and thereby inform modeling of the solar dynamo, particularly on scales of a solar cycle. We aim to determine a number of sunspot properties over cycle 23 using the uniform database provided by the SOHO Michelson Doppler Imager data. We focus in particular on their distribution on the solar disk, maximum magnetic field and umbral/penumbral areas. We investigate whether the secular decrease in sunspot maximum magnetic field reported in Kitt Peak data is present also in MDI data. We have used t…
The solar gravitational moments $J_{2n}$ are important astronomical quantities whose precise determination is relevant for solar physics, gravitational theory and high precision astrometry and celestial mechanics. Accordingly, we propose in the present work to calculate new values of $J_{2n}$ (for $n$=1,2,3,4 and 5) using recent two-dimensional rotation rates inferred from the high resolution SDO/HMI helioseismic data spanning the whole solar activity cycle 24. To this aim, a general integral equation relating $J_{2n}$ to the solar internal density and rotation is derived from the structure eq…
We have developed a data-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model of the global solar corona which uses characteristically-consistent boundary conditions (BCs) at the inner boundary. Our global solar corona model can be driven by different observational data including Solar Dynamics Observatory/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (SDO/HMI) synoptic vector magnetograms together with the horizontal velocity data in the photosphere obtained by the time-distance helioseismology method, and the line-of-sight (LOS) magnetogram data obtained by HMI, Solar and Heliospheric Observatory/Michelson Doppler Ima…
We study variations of the lifetimes of high-degree solar p-modes in the quiet and active Sun with the solar activity cycle. The lifetimes in the degree range 300 - 600 and frequency 2.5 - 4.5 mHz were computed from SOHO/MDI data in an area including active regions and quiet Sun using the time-distance technique. We applied our analysis to the data in four different phases of solar activity: in 1996 (at minimum), 1998 (rising phase), 2000 (at maximum) and 2003 (declining phase). The results from the area with active regions show that the lifetime decreases as activity increases. The maximal li…
The ring-diagram technique was developed by Frank Hill 25 years ago and developed quickly during the late 1990s. It is nowadays one of the most commonly used techniques in local helioseismology. The method consists in the power spectral analysis of solar acoustic oscillations on small regions (2 to 30 degrees) of the solar surface. The power spectrum resembles a set of trumpets nested inside each other and, for a given frequency, it looks like a ring, hence the technique's name. It provides information on the horizontal flow field and thermodynamic structure in the layers immediately below the…
We study the effects of different descriptions of the solar surface convection on the eigenfrequencies of p-modes. 1-D evolution calculations of the whole Sun and 3-D hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the current surface are performed. These calculations rely on realistic physics. Averaged stratifications of the 3-D simulations are introduced in the 1-D solar evolution or in the structure models. The eigenfrequencies obtained are compared to those of 1-D models relying on the usual phenomenologies of convection and to observations of the MDI instrument aboard SoHO. We also in…
