Rotation of the leading sunspot of active region NOAA 10421 was investigated using magnetograms and Dopplergrams from the MDI instrument of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), and white-light images from the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE). The vertical, radial, and azimuthal axisymmetrical components of both magnetic and velocity field vectors were reconstructed for the sunspot umbra and penumbra. All three components of both vectors in the umbra and penumbra show torsional oscillations with the same rotational period of about 3.8 days. The TRACE white-light data also show that the sunspot umbra and penumbra are torsionally rotating with the same period. Possible mechanisms of sunspot torsional motions are discussed.
Long (up to 100 hours) time series of SOHO/MDI Doppler data are analyzed. The power spectrum of radial velocity time series in the quiet photosphere is observed to have, along with the known 5-min mode, a stable strong mode with a period of about 32 h, which is close to the supergranulation cell lifetime. The spatial distribution of the amplitudes of these oscillations also coincides with the characteristic size scale of supergranulation (~35 Mm).
Analysis of solar radius measurements acquired by the Michelson Doppler Imager on the SOHO spacecraft supports previously reported evidence of solar internal r-mode oscillations in Mt Wilson radius data and in nuclear-decay data acquired at the Lomonosov Moscow State University. The frequencies of these oscillations are compatible with oscillations in a putative inner tachocline that separates a slowly rotating core from the radiative envelope.
The first observations of seismic responses to solar flares were carried out using time-distance (TD) and holography techniques applied to SOHO/MDI Dopplergrams obtained from space and un-affected by terrestrial atmospheric disturbances. However, the ground-based network GONG is potentially a very valuable source of sunquake observations, especially in cases where space observations are unavailable. In this paper we present updated technique for pre-processing of GONG observations for application of subjacent vantage holography. Using this method and TD diagrams we investigate several sunquake…
We processed magnetograms that were obtained with the Michaelson Doppler Imager onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO/MDI). The results confirm the basic properties of long-period oscillations of sunspots that have previously been established and also reveal new properties. We show that the limiting (lowest) eigenmode of low-frequency oscillations of a sunspot as a whole is the mode with a period of 10 - 12 up to 32 - 35 hours (depending on the sunspot's magnetic- field strength). This mode is observed consistently throughout the observation period 5 - 7 days, but its amplitude …
Comparisons of solar magnetic-field measurements made in different spectral lines are very important, especially in those lines in which observations have a long history or(and) specific diagnostic significance. The spectral lines FeI 523.3 nm and FeI525.0 nm belong to this class. Therefore, this study is devoted to a comprehensive analysis using new high-precision Stokes-meter full-disk observations. The disk-averaged magnetic-field strength ratio R = B(523.3)/B(525.0) equals 1.97 +- 0.02. The center-to-limb variation (CLV) is R = 1.74 - 2.43 mu + 3.43 mu^2, where mu is the cosine of the cent…
Time-distance helioseismology is one of the primary tools for studying the solar meridional circulation. However, travel-time measurements of the subsurface meridional flow suffer from a variety of systematic errors, such as a center-to-limb variation and an offset due to the P-angle uncertainty of solar images. Here we apply the time-distance technique to contemporaneous medium-degree Dopplergrams produced by SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI to obtain the travel-time difference caused by meridional circulation throughout the solar convection zone. The P-angle offset in MDI images is measured by cross-cor…
Continuum intensity observations obtained with the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on-board the SoHO mission provide long time series of filtergrams that are ideal for studying the evolution of large-scale phenomena in the solar atmosphere and their dependence on solar activity. These filtergrams, however, are not taken in a pure continuum spectral band, but are constructed from a proxy, namely a combination of filtergrams sampling the Ni I 676.8 nm line. We studied the sensitivity of this continuum proxy to the shape of the nickel line and to the degradation in the instrumental transmission pr…
The variation of solar irradiance is one of the natural forcing mechanisms of the terrestrial climate. Hence, the time-dependent solar irradiance is an important input parameter for climate modelling. The solar surface magnetic field is a powerful proxy for solar irradiance reconstruction. The analyses of data obtained with the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on board the SOHO mission are therefore useful for the identification of solar surface magnetic features to be used in solar irradiance reconstruction models. However, there is still a need for automated technologies that would enable the …
Solar magnetic fields are generated in the solar interior and pop up at the solar surface to form active regions. As the magnetic field appears on the surface, it forms various structures like small magnetic elements, pores, and sunspots. The nature of these formation processes is largely unknown. In this contribution we elaborate on the formation of sunspots and particularly on the formation of penumbrae. We report on observations that we obtained at the German VTT on July 4, 2009 on the formation of the spot in AR 11024. This data set is accomplished with data from SOHO/MDI which offers an e…
Towards a live homogeneous database of solar active regions based on SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI synoptic magnetograms. I. Automatic detection and calibration
A specific type of artifacts, that originate due to displacement of the image of a moving object along the digital (pixel) matrix of receiver are analyzed in detail. The criteria of appearance and the influence of these artifacts on the study of long-term oscillations of sunspots are deduced. The obtained criteria suggest us methods for reduction or even elimination of these artifacts. It is shown that the use of integral parameters can be very effective against the artifact distortions. The simultaneous observations of sunspot magnetic field and ultraviolet intensity of the umbra have given t…
Total and spectral solar irradiance are key parameters in the assessment of solar influence on changes in the Earth's climate. We present a reconstruction of daily solar irradiance obtained using the SATIRE-S model spanning 1974 to 2013 based on full-disc observations from the KPVT, SoHO/MDI and SDO/HMI. SATIRE-S ascribes variation in solar irradiance on timescales greater than a day to photospheric magnetism. The solar spectrum is reconstructed from the apparent surface coverage of bright magnetic features and sunspots in the daily data using the modelled intensity spectra of these magnetic s…
We compare photospheric line-of-sight magnetograms from the Synoptic Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) vector spectromagnetograph (VSM) instrument with observations from the 150-foot Solar Tower at Mt. Wilson (MWO), Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). We find very good agreement between VSM and the other data sources for both disk-averaged flux densities and pixel-by-pixel measurements. We show that the VSM mean flux density time series is of consistently high sign…
The magnetic flux that is generated by dynamo inside the Sun emerges in the form of bipolar magnetic regions. We have analyzed the whole set of solar magnetograms obtained with the SOHO/MDI instrument in 1995-2011, and automatically identified 160,079 bipolar magnetic regions that span a range of scale sizes across nearly four orders of magnitude. Their properties have been statistically analyzed, in particular with respect to the polarity orientations of the bipolar regions, including their tilt angle distributions. The latitude variation of the average tilt angles (with respect to the E-W di…

The south-north travel-time differences are measured by applying time-distance helioseismology to the MDI and HMI medium-degree Dopplergrams covering May 1996-April 2017. Our data analysis corrects for several sources of systematic effects: P-angle error, surface magnetic field effects, and center-to-limb variations. An interpretation of the travel-time measurements is obtained using a forward-modeling approach in the ray approximation. The travel-time differences are similar in the southern hemisphere for cycles 23 and 24. However, they differ in the northern hemisphere between cycles 23 and …
The generation of magnetic flux in the solar interior and its transport to the outer solar atmosphere will be in the focus of solar physics research for the next decades. One key-ingredient is the process of magnetic flux emergence into the solar photosphere, and the reorganization to form the magnetic phenomena of active regions like sunspots and pores. On July 4, 2009, we observed a region of emerging magnetic flux, in which a proto-spot without penumbra forms a penumbra within some 4.5 hours. This process is documented by multi-wavelength observations at the German VTT: (a) imaging, (b) dat…
Toward a live homogeneous database of solar active regions based on SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI synoptic magnetograms.II.parameters for solar cycle variability
In our previous articles (Chertok et al.: 2013, Solar Phys. 282, 175, and 2015, Solar Phys. 290, 627), we presented a preliminary tool for the early diagnostics of the geoeffectiveness of solar eruptions based on the estimate of the total unsigned line-of-sight photospheric magnetic flux in accompanying extreme-ultraviolet arcades and dimmings. This tool was based on the analysis of eruptions observed in 1996-2005 with SOHO/EIT and MDI. Empirical relationships were obtained to estimate the probable importance of upcoming space weather disturbances caused by an eruption, which just occurred, wi…
Searches for exoplanets with radial velocity techniques are increasingly sensitive to stellar activity. It is therefore crucial to characterize how this activity influences radial velocity measurements in their study of the detectability of planets in these conditions. In a previous work we simulated the impact of spots and plages on the radial velocity of the Sun. Our objective is to compare this simulation with the observed radial velocity of the Sun for the same period. We use Dopplergrams and magnetograms obtained by MDI/SOHO over one solar cycle to reconstruct the solar integrated radial …
The global oscillations of the Sun are investigated on the base of three independent sets of data: 1. Records of Total Solar Irradiance (TSI). 2. The average brightness of the photosphere in MDI (SOHO) and HMI (SDO) images. 3. Records of the time variations of sunlight reflected from the planets during their passage in the field of view of the LASCO C3 coronagraph. It is found that in the low-frequency spectrum of solar oscillations as a star there are modes of 8-10, 36-38 hours and the main stable 9-day mode. The last mode can be regarded as a reflection of oscillatory processes near the fast…
The Sun's axisymmetric flows, differential rotation and meridional flow, govern the dynamics of the solar magnetic cycle and variety of methods are used to measure these flows, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Flow measurements based on cross-correlating images of the surface magnetic field have been made since the 1970s which require advanced numerical techniques that are capable of detecting movements of less than the pixel size in images of the Sun. We have identified several systematic errors in addition to the center-to-limb effect that influence previous measurements of these …
The best known Solar oscillation-like star is the Sun. During the last 14 years, the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO) has been continuously observing this star from the Lagrange point L1 with an enormous success. Among the 11 instruments placed onboard, 3 of them are dedicated to helioseismology: GOLF, VIRGO and MDI. The first two observe the Sun as a star by integrating the velocity or intensity signal of the visible solar disk into a single point. They are thus similar to any other observation done in asteroseismology. During this review I will present the most important re…
The study of low-degree high-frequency waves in the Sun can provide new insight into the dynamics of the deeper layers of the Sun. Here, we present the analysis of the velocity observations of the Sun obtained from the Michelson and Doppler Imager (MDI) and Global Oscillations at Low Frequency (GOLF) instruments on board Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft for the major flare event of 2003 October 28 during the solar cycle 23. We have applied wavelet transform to the time series of disk-integrated velocity signals from the solar surface using the full-disk Dopplergrams obtaine…
In a recent paper (Straus et al. 2008) we determined the energy flux of internal gravity waves in the lower solar atmosphere using a combination of 3D numerical simulations and observations obtained with the IBIS instrument operated at the Dunn Solar Telescope and the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on SOHO. In this paper we extend these studies using coordinated observations from SOT/NFI and SOT/SP on Hinode and MDI. The new measurements confirm that gravity waves are the dominant phenomenon in the quiet middle/upper photosphere and that they transport more mechanical energy than the high-freq…
High degree solar mode frequencies as measured by ring diagrams are known to change in the presence of the strong magnetic fields found in active regions. We examine these changes in frequency for a large sample of active regions analyzed with data from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) onboard the SoHO spacecraft, spanning most of solar cycle 23. We confirm that the frequencies increase with increasing magnetic field strength, and that this dependence is generally linear. We find that the dependence is slightly but significantly different for active regions with different sunspot types.
We present the multi-wavelength observations of a flux rope that was trying to erupt from NOAA AR 11045 and the associated M-class solar flare on 12 February 2010 using space and ground based observations from TRACE, STEREO, SOHO/MDI, Hinode/XRT and BBSO. While the flux rope was rising from the active region, an M1.1/2F class flare was triggered nearby one of its footpoints. We suggest that the flare triggering was due to the reconnection of a rising flux rope with the surrounding low-lying magnetic loops. The flux rope reached a projected height of ~0.15 Rs with a speed of ~90 km/s while the …
We observed two surges in H-alpha from the super-active region NOAA 10484. The first surge was associated with an SF/C4.3 class flare. The second one was a major surge associated with a SF/C3.9 flare. This surge was also observed with SOHO/EIT in 195 angstrom and NoRh in 17 GHz, and showed similar evolution in these wavelengths. The major surge had an ejective funnel-shaped spray structure with fast expansion in linear (about 1.2 x 10^5 km) and angular (about 65 deg) size during its maximum phase. The mass motion of the surge was along open magnetic field lines, with average velocity about 100…
We present observational evidence for the presence of MHD waves in the solar photosphere deduced from SOHO/MDI Dopplergram velocity observations. The magneto-acoustic perturbations are observed as acoustic power enhancement in the sunspot umbra at high-frequency bands in the velocity component perpendicular to the magnetic field. We use numerical modelling of wave propagation through localised non-uniform magnetic field concentration along with the same filtering procedure as applied to the observations to identify the observed waves. Guided by the results of the numerical simulations we class…
Using the observations from Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) onboard Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), we develop a computational algorithm to automatically identify the bipolar magnetic regions (BMRs) in the active regions, and then study their statistical properties. The individual magnetic (positive or negative) pole of the BMR is determined from the region with an absolute strength above 55 G and with an area above 250 pixel^2 (495 Mm^2), while a BMR is identified as a pair of positive and negative poles with a shortest area-weight distance between them. Based on this method, 2234 B…
Aims: We investigate the temporal evolution of magnetic flux emergence in the quiet Sun atmosphere close to disk center. Methods: We combine high-resolution SoHO/MDI magnetograms with TRACE observations taken in the 1216 Å channel in order to analyze the temporal evolution of an emerging small-scale magnetic loop and its traces in the chromosphere. Results: At first place, we find signatures of flux emergence very close to the edge of a supergranular network boundary located at disk center. The new emerging flux appears first in the MDI magnetograms in form of an asymmetric bipolar element, i.…
Several papers provide evidences that the most probable sites of flare onset are the regions of high horizontal magnetic field gradients in solar active regions. Besides the localization of flare producing areas the present work intends to reveal the characteristic temporal variations in these regions prior to flares. This study uses sunspot data instead of magnetograms, it follows the behaviour of a suitable defined proxy measure representing the horizontal magnetic field gradient. The source of the data is the SDD (SOHO/MDI-Debrecen Data) sunspot catalogue. The most promising pre-flare signa…
Adiabatic oscillation frequencies of stellar models, computed with the standard mixing-length formulation for convection, increasingly deviate with radial order from observations in solar-like stars. Standard solar models overestimate adiabatic frequencies by as much as ~ 20 μHz. In this letter, we address the physical processes of turbulent convection that are predominantly responsible for the frequency differences between standard models and observations, also called `surface effects'. We compare measured solar frequencies from the MDI instrument on the SOHO spacecraft with frequency calcula…
Sunspot regions often form complexes of activity that may live for several solar rotations, and represent a major component of the Sun's magnetic activity. It had been suggested that the close appearance of active regions in space and time might be related to common subsurface roots, or "nests" of activity. EUV images show that the active regions are magnetically connected in the corona, but subsurface connections have not been established. We investigate the subsurface structure and dynamics of a large complex of activity, NOAA 10987-10989, observed during the SOHO/MDI Dynamics run in March-A…
We study the long-term behaviour of sunspot penumbra to umbra area ratio by analyzing the recently digitized Kodaikanal white-light data (1923-2011). We implement an automatic umbra extraction method and compute the ratio over eight solar cycles (Cycles 16-23). Although the average ratio doesn't show any variation with spot latitudes, cycle phases and strengths, it increases from 5.5 to 6 as the sunspot size increases from 100 $μ$hem to 2000 $μ$hem. Interestingly, our analysis also reveals that this ratio for smaller sunspots (area $<$ 100 $μ$hem) does not have any long-term systematic trend w…
Since the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) began recording ~ 1 TB of data per day, there has been an increased need to automatically extract features and events for further analysis. Here we compare the overall detection performance, correlations between extracted properties, and usability for feature tracking of four solar feature-detection algorithms: the Solar Monitor Active Region Tracker (SMART) detects active regions in line-of-sight magnetograms; the Automated Solar Activity Prediction code (ASAP) detects sunspots and pores in white-light continuum images; the Sunspot Tracking And Recog…
Various methods of helioseismology are used to study the subsurface properties of the sunspot in NOAA Active Region 9787. This sunspot was chosen because it is axisymmetric, shows little evolution during 20-28 January 2002, and was observed continuously by the MDI/SOHO instrument. (...) Wave travel times and mode frequencies are affected by the sunspot. In most cases, wave packets that propagate through the sunspot have reduced travel times. At short travel distances, however, the sign of the travel-time shifts appears to depend sensitively on how the data are processed and, in particular, on …
We present a multiwavelength study of recurrent surges observed in Hα, UV (SOHO/EIT) and Radio (Learmonth, Australia) from the super-active region NOAA 10484 on 25 October, 2003. Several bright structures visible in Hα and UV corresponding to subflares are also observed at the base of each surge. Type III bursts are triggered and RHESSI X-ray sources are evident with surge activity. The major surge consists of the bunches of ejective paths forming a fan-shape region with an angular size of (\approx 65\degree) during its maximum phase. The ejection speed reaches upto \sim200 km/s. The SOHO/MDI …
We analyze a solar active region observed by the Hinode CaII H line using the time-distance helioseismology technique, and infer wave-speed perturbation structures and flow fields beneath the active region with a high spatial resolution. The general subsurface wave-speed structure is similar to the previous results obtained from SOHO/MDI observations. The general subsurface flow structure is also similar, and the downward flows beneath the sunspot and the mass circulations around the sunspot are clearly resolved. Below the sunspot, some organized divergent flow cells are observed, and these st…
