Adiabatic oscillation frequencies of stellar models, computed with the standard mixing-length formulation for convection, increasingly deviate with radial order from observations in solar-like stars. Standard solar models overestimate adiabatic frequencies by as much as ~ 20 μHz. In this letter, we address the physical processes of turbulent convection that are predominantly responsible for the frequency differences between standard models and observations, also called `surface effects'. We compare measured solar frequencies from the MDI instrument on the SOHO spacecraft with frequency calculations that include three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamical simulation results in the equilibrium model, nonadiabatic effects, and a consistent treatment of the turbulent pressure in both the equilibrium and stability computations. With the consistent inclusion of the above physics in our model computation we are able to reproduce the observed solar frequencies to < 3 μHz without the need of any additional ad-hoc functional corrections.
High-quality data from space-based observatories present an opportunity to fit stellar models to observations of individually-identified oscillation frequencies, not just the large and small frequency separations. But such fits require the evaluation of a large number of accurate stellar models, which remains expensive. Here, we show that global-mode oscillation frequencies interpolated in a grid of stellar models are precise and accurate, at least in the neighbourhood of a solar model.
We discuss how the p- and g-mode frequencies calculated for rotating stars are affected by the way of including the centrifugal deformations. We find that p-mode frequencies are sensitive to the accuracy in treating the centrifugal deformation, while the effect becomes smaller for smaller frequencies in the g-mode range.
Solar oscillation frequencies change with the level of magnetic activity. Localizing subsurface magnetic field concentrations in the Sun with helioseismology will help us to understand the solar dynamo. Because the magnetic fields are not considered in standard solar models, adding them to the basic equations of stellar structure changes the eigenfunctions and eigenfrequencies. We use quasi-degenerate perturbation theory to calculate the effect of toroidal magnetic fields on solar oscillation mean multiplet frequencies for six field configurations. In our calculations, we consider both the dir…
A rotating, two dimensional stellar model is evolved to match the approximate conditions of Alpha Oph. Both axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric oscillation frequencies are computed for 2D rotating models which approximate the properties of Alpha Oph. These computed frequencies are compared to the observed frequencies. Oscillation calculations are made assuming the eigenfunction can be fit with six Legendre polynomials, but comparison calculations with eight Legendre polynomials show the frequencies agree to within about 0.26% on average. The surface horizontal shape of the eigenfunctions for the …
It has been established earlier that sharp features like the base of the convective zone or the second helium ionisation zone inside a star give rise to sinusoidal oscillations in the frequencies of pulsation. The acoustic depth of such features can be estimated from this oscillatory signal in the frequencies. We apply this technique for the CoRoT frequencies of the solar-type star HD49933. This is the first time that such analysis has been done of seismic data for any star other than the Sun. We are able to determine the acoustic depth of both the base of the convective zone and the HeII ioni…
Properties of stars undergoing pulsation such as the well known root-mean-density scaling relation can be useful when trying to match the observed properties of a particular star. It is often assumed that this relation is valid for p mode frequencies in rotating stars. To examine the change in frequency with rotation and mass, we have studied oscillation frequencies of two-dimensional uniformly rotating zero-age main sequence stellar models in the delta Scuti mass range. We identified 370 p and g axisymetric modes for non-rotating models and then traced the changes in their frequencies as the …
The presence of mixed modes makes subgiants excellent targets for asteroseismology, providing a probe for the internal structure of stars. Here we study 36 \emph{Kepler} subgiants with solar-like oscillations and report their oscillation mode parameters. We performed a so-called peakbagging exercise, i.e. estimating oscillation mode frequencies, linewidths, and amplitudes with a power spectrum model, fitted in the Bayesian framework and sampled with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm. The uncertainties of the mode frequencies have a median value of 0.180 $μ$Hz. We obtained seismic parameters…
\Kepler has revolutionised our understanding of both exoplanets and their host stars. Asteroseismology is a valuable tool in the characterisation of stars and \Kepler is an excellent observing facility to perform asteroseismology. Here we select a sample of 35 \Kepler solar-type stars which host transiting exoplanets (or planet candidates) with detected solar-like oscillations. Using available \Kepler short cadence data up to Quarter 16 we create power spectra optimised for asteroseismology of solar-type stars. We identify modes of oscillation and estimate mode frequencies by ``peak bagging'' …
We analyse transverse oscillations of a coronal loop excited by continuous monoperiodic motions of the loop footpoint at different frequencies in the presence of gravity. Using the MPI-AMRVAC code, we perform three-dimensional numerical magnetohydrodynamic simulations, considering the loop as a magnetic flux tube filled in with denser, hotter, and gravitationally stratified plasma. We show the resonant response of the loop to its external excitation and analyse the development of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at different heights. We also study the spatial distribution of plasma heating due…
Selfsimilarity relations for torsional oscillation frequencies of neutron star crust are discussed. For any neutron star model, the frequencies of fundamental torsional oscillations (with no nodes of radial wave function, i.e. at n=0, and at all possible angular wave numbers l >= 2) is determined by a single constant. Frequencies of ordinary torsional oscillations (at any n>0 with l >= 2) are determined by two constants. These constants are easily calculated through radial integrals over the neutron star crust, giving the simplest method to determine full oscillation spectrum. All constants fo…
Spectral energy distributions are computed using 2D rotating stellar models and NLTE plane parallel model atmospheres. A rotating, 2D stellar model has been found which matches the observed ultraviolet and visible spectrum of ? Oph. The SED match occurs for the interferometrically deduced surface shape and inclination, and is different from the SED produced by spherical models. The p mode oscillation frequencies in which the latitudinal variation is modelled by a linear combination of eight Legendre polynomials were computed for this model. The five highest and seven of the nine highest amplit…
Some cataclysmic variables show short-period ($\sim$200 to $\sim$2000 s) light variations, which are attributable to nonradial pulsations of the accreting primary white dwarf. We regard these periodic variations as r-mode (global Rossby-wave) oscillations which are presumably excited mechanically and confined into hydrogen-rich layers in the white dwarf. Often observed modulations in amplitudes and frequencies even during an observing season may be interpreted as beatings among densely distributed r-mode frequencies. Making the r-mode frequency distribution of a model to be consistent (by adju…
Below the acoustic cut-off frequency, oscillations are trapped within the solar interior and become resonant. However, signatures of oscillations persist above the acoustic cut-off frequency, and these travelling waves are known as pseudomodes. Acoustic oscillation frequencies are known to be correlated with the solar cycle, but the pseudomode frequencies are predicted to vary in anti-phase. We have studied the variation in pseudomode frequencies with time systematically through the solar cycle. We analyzed Sun-as-a-star data from Variability of Solar Irradiance and Gravity Oscillations (VIRGO…
The determination of the size of the convective core of main-sequence stars is usually dependent on the construction of models of stars. Here we introduce a method to estimate the radius of the convective core of main-sequence stars with masses between about 1.1 and 1.5 $M_{\odot}$ from observed frequencies of low-degree p-modes. A formula is proposed to achieve the estimation. The values of the radius of the convective core of four known stars are successfully estimated by the formula. The radius of the convective core of KIC 9812850 estimated by the formula is $\mathbf{0.140\pm0.028}$ $R_{\o…
In addition to the well-known 11-year solar cycle, the Sun's magnetic activity also shows significant variation on shorter time scales, e.g. between one and two years. We observe a quasi-biennial (2-year) signal in the solar p-mode oscillation frequencies, which are sensitive probes of the solar interior. The signal is visible in Sun-as-a-star data observed by different instruments and here we describe the results obtained using BiSON, GOLF, and VIRGO data. Our results imply that the 2-year signal is susceptible to the influence of the main 11-year solar cycle. However, the source of the signa…
For the very best and brightest asteroseismic solar-type targets observed by Kepler, the frequency precision is sufficient to determine the acoustic depths of the surface convective layer and the helium ionization zone. Such sharp features inside the acoustic cavity of the star, which we call acoustic glitches, create small oscillatory deviations from the uniform spacing of frequencies in a sequence of oscillation modes with the same spherical harmonic degree. We use these oscillatory signals to determine the acoustic locations of such features in 19 solar-type stars observed by the Kepler mis…
Solar-like oscillations have been observed by Kepler and CoRoT in several solar-type stars, thereby providing a way to probe the stars using asteroseismology. We provide the mode frequencies of the oscillations of various stars required to perform a comparison with those obtained from stellar modelling. We used a time series of nine months of data for each star. The 61 stars observed were categorised in three groups: simple, F-like and mixed-mode. The simple group includes stars for which the identification of the mode degree is obvious. The F-like group includes stars for which the identifica…
KIC 08626021 is a pulsating DB white dwarf of considerable recent interest, and first of its class to be extensively monitored by Kepler for its pulsation properties. Fitting the observed oscillation frequencies of KIC 08626021 to a model can yield insights into its otherwise-hidden internal structure. Template-based white dwarf models choose a luminosity profile where the luminosity is proportional to the enclosed mass, $L_r \propto M_r$, independent of the effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$. Evolutionary models of young white dwarfs with $T_{\rm eff} \gtrsim$ 25,000 K suggest neutrino emiss…
Los Alamos National Laboratory has calculated a new generation of radiative opacities (OPLIB data using the ATOMIC code) for elements with atomic number Z=1-30 with improved physics input, updated atomic data, and finer temperature grid to replace the Los Alamos LEDCOP opacities released in the year 2000. We calculate the evolution of standard solar models including these new opacities, and compare with models evolved using the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory OPAL (Iglesias and Rogers 1996) opacities. We use the solar abundance mixture of Asplund et al. (2009). The new Los Alamos ATOMIC…
The normal modes of oscillation for a magnetic arcade are used to analytically solve an initial value problem and estimate the power spectra of wave frequencies generated by a reconnection event in the solar corona. Over a realistic range of parameters, I find that such a disturbance generates a peak power at $\sim10$s$\mathrm{mHz}$ frequencies, but still substantial power up to $\sim4\mathrm{Hz}$. The cadence and sensitivity of current instrumentation does not allow observations of oscillations at these frequencies, but in the near future, new instrumentation will be able to probe this regime…
Space-based observations of solar-like oscillations present an opportunity to constrain stellar models using individual mode frequencies. However, current stellar models are inaccurate near the surface, which introduces a systematic difference that must be corrected. We introduce and evaluate two parametrizations of the surface corrections based on formulae given by Gough (1990). The first we call a cubic term proportional to $ν^3/\mathcal{I}$ and the second has an additional inverse term proportional to $ν^{-1}/\mathcal{I}$, where $ν$ and $\mathcal{I}$ are the frequency and inertia of an osci…
We describe a method for comparing the frequency spectra of oscillating stars. We focus on solar-like oscillations, in which mode frequencies generally follow a regular pattern. On the basis that oscillation frequencies of similar stars scale homologously, we show how to display two stars on a single echelle diagram. The result can be used to infer the ratio of their mean densities very precisely, without reference to theoretical models. In addition, data from the star with the better signal-to-noise ratio can be used to confirm weaker modes and reject sidelobes in data from the second star. F…
Effects of stellar rotation on adiabatic oscillation frequencies of pressure modes are discussed. Methods to evaluate them are briefly exposed and some of their main results are presented.
We analyse the chromospheric Doppler velocity oscillations in a sunspot using the high resolution spectral observations obtained from the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph(FISS) of the New Solar Telescope at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. The Doppler velocity maps are constructed from the bisectors of the spectral observations. The time series analysis of Doppler velocity maps show enhanced power in the sunspot umbra at higher frequencies and in the penumbra at lower frequencies. We find that the peak power frequency decreases gradually from the umbra to outward.
The solar-activity-cycle minimum observed between Cycles 23 and 24 is generally regarded as being unusually deep and long. That minimum is being followed by one of the smallest amplitude cycles in recent history. We perform an in-depth analysis of this minimum with helioseismology. We use Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) data to demonstrate that the frequencies of helioseismic oscillations are a sensitive probe of the Sun's magnetic field: The frequencies of the helioseismic oscillations were found to be systematically lower in the minimum following Cycle 23 than in the minimum precedin…
Low amplitude is the defining characteristic of solar-like oscillations. The space projects $Kepler$ and $CoRoT$ give us a great opportunity to successfully detect such oscillations in numerous targets. Achievements of asteroseismology depend on new discoveries of connections between the oscillation frequencies and stellar properties. In the previous studies, the frequency of the maximum amplitude and the large separation between frequencies were used for this purpose. In the present study, we confirm that the large separation between the frequencies has two minima at two different frequency v…
In this paper, we address the controversy regarding the recent extended solar minimum as seen in helioseismic low- and intermediate-degree mode frequencies: studies from different instruments identify different epochs of seismic minima. Here we use mode frequencies from a network of six identical instruments, Global Oscillation Network Group, continuously collecting data for more than 15 years, to investigate the epoch of minimum in solar oscillation frequencies prior to the beginning of solar cycle 24. We include both low- and intermediate-degree modes in the $\ell$ range of 0 -- 120 and freq…
We present the first observations of spatially resolved oscillation sources obtained with the Siberian Radioheliograph (SRH) at 3-6 GHz. We have found significant flux oscillations with periods of about 3, 5 and 13 minutes emitted from AR12833. The 3-minute periodicity dominates at higher frequencies. It was found that the apparent level of oscillations depends on the active region location on the disc, and scales down towards the limbs. The oscillations were studied in detail during one hour interval on June 19, 2021. We found that sources of 3-min oscillations were located above the umbra an…
Measurements of oscillation frequencies of the Sun and stars can provide important independent constraints on their internal structure and dynamics. Seismic models of these oscillations are used to connect structure and rotation of the star to its resonant frequencies, which are then compared with observations, the goal being that of minimizing the difference between the two. Even in the case of the Sun, for which structure models are highly tuned, observed frequencies show systematic deviations from modeled frequencies, a phenomenon referred to as the "surface term." The dominant source of th…
Oscillation properties are usually measured by fitting symmetric Lorentzian profiles to the power spectra of Sun-like stars. However the line profiles of solar oscillations have been observed to be asymmetrical for the Sun. The physical origin of this line asymmetry is not fully understood, although it should depend on the depth dependence of the source of wave excitation (convective turbulence) and details of the observable (velocity or intensity). For oscillations of the Sun, it has been shown that neglecting the asymmetry leads to systematic errors in the frequency determination. This could…
The presence of r mode oscillations (global modes of Rossby waves coupled with buoyancy) in an eclipsing binary is recognized as frequency groups in a frequency-amplitude diagram obtained from a Fourier analysis of Kepler light curve data. The frequency at the upper bound of an r-mode frequency group is close to the rotation frequency of the star. Analysing about eight hundred Kepler light curves of eclipsing binaries finds about seven hundred cases showing the signature of r modes. Sometimes two sets of the frequency groups are found, which indicates the two component stars to have slightly d…
We present properties of intensity oscillations of a sunspot in the photosphere and chromosphere using G~band and CaIIH filtergrams from Hinode. Intensity power maps as function of magnetic field strength and frequency reveal reduction of power in Gband with increase in photospheric magnetic field strength at all frequencies. In CaIIH, however, stronger fields exhibit more power at high frequencies particularly in the 4.5 mHz-8.0 mHz band. Power distribution in different locations of the active region show that the oscillations in CaIIH exhibit more power in comparison to that of Gband. We als…
The collective transverse coronal loop oscillations seem to be detected in the observational studies. In this regard, Luna et al. (2009, ApJ, 692, 1582) modeled the collective kinklike normal modes of several cylindrical loops system using the T-matrix theory. This paper investigates the effects of longitudinal density stratification along the loop axis, on the collective kinklike modes of system of coronal loops. The coronal loops system is modeled as cylinders of parallel flux tubes, with two ends of each loop at the dense photosphere. The flux tubes are considered as uniform magnetic fields…
We study the radial oscillations of non-rotating strange stars and their characteristic echo frequencies for three Equations of state (EoSs), viz., MIT Bag model EoS, linear EoS and polytropic EoS. The frequencies of radial oscillations of these compact stars are computed for these EoSs. 22 lowest radial frequencies for each of these three EoSs have been computed. First, for each EoS, we have integrated Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations numerically to calculate the radial and pressure perturbations of strange stars. Next, the mass-radius relationships for these stars are obtained usin…
We study how the frequencies and damping times of oscillations of a newly born, hot proto-neutron star depend on the physical quantities which characterize the star quasi-stationary evolution which follows the bounce. Stellar configurations are modeled using a microscopic equation of state obtained within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock, nuclear many-body approach, extended to the finite-temperature regime. We discuss the mode frequency behaviour as function of the lepton composition, and of the entropy gradients which prevail in the interior of the star. We find that, in the very early stages, gra…
Whether analytic exact vacuum(electrovacuum) solutions of the Einstein(Einstein-Maxwell) field equations can accurately describe or not the exterior spacetime of compact stars remains still an interesting open question in Relativistic Astrophysics. As an attempt to establish their level of accuracy, the radii of the Innermost Stable Circular Orbits (ISCOs) of test particles given by analytic exterior spacetime geometries have been compared with the ones given by numerical solutions for neutron stars (NSs) obeying a realistic equation of state (EoS). It has been so shown that the six-parametric…
We construct stellar models of hadron stars and hybrid stars and calculate the frequencies of their lowest radial mode of vibration. Chandrasekhar's equation for radial oscillations is generalized for stars with internal electric fields and earlier versions of that generalization are simplified. For the hybrid stars a Gibbs construction is employed. It is found that the softening of the equation of state associated with the presence of deconfined quarks reduces the oscillation frequency. We show that a slight charge inbalance should lead to increased maximum mass, decreased central density and…
We develop a new method to measure neutron star parameters and derive constraints on the equation of state of dense matter by fitting the frequencies of simultaneous Quasi Periodic Oscillation modes observed in the X-ray flux of accreting neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries. To this aim we calculate the fundamental frequencies of geodesic motion around rotating neutron stars based on an accurate general-relativistic approximation for their external spacetime. Once the fundamental frequencies are related to the observed frequencies through a QPO model, they can be fit to the data to obtain…
One of the most common assumptions in the study of neutron star models and their oscillations is that the pressure is isotopic, however there are arguments that this may not be correct. Thus in the present paper we make a first step towards studying the nonradial oscillations of neutron stars with an anisotropic pressure. We adopt the so-called Cowling approximation where the spacetime metric is kept fixed and the oscillation spectrum for the first few fluid modes is obtained. The effect of the anisotropy on the frequencies is apparent, although with the present results it might be hard to dis…
