The investigation of contact symmetries of re--parametrization invariant Lagrangians of finite degrees of freedom and quadratic in the velocities is presented. The main concern of the paper is those symmetry generators which depend linearly in the velocities. A natural extension of the symmetry generator along the lapse function $N(t)$, with the appropriate extension of the dependence in $\dot{N}(t)$ of the gauge function, is assumed; this action yields new results. The central finding is that the integrals of motion are either linear or quadratic in velocities and are generated, respectively by the conformal Killing vector fields and the conformal Killing tensors of the configuration space metric deduced from the kinetic part of the Lagrangian (with appropriate conformal factors). The freedom of re--parametrization allows one to appropriately scale $N(t)$, so that the potential becomes constant; in this case the integrals of motion can be constructed from the Killing fields and Killing tensors of the scaled metric. A rather interesting result is the non--necessity of the gauge function in Noether's theorem due to the presence of the Hamiltonian constraint
This paper analyses the Noether symmetries and the corresponding conservation laws for Chern-Simons Lagrangians in dimension $d=3$. In particular, we find an expression for the superpotential of Chern-Simons gravity. As a by-product the general discussion of superpotentials for 3rd order natural and quasi-natural theories is also given.

We prove that, given a time-independent Lagrangian defined in the first tangent bundle of configuration space, every infinitesimal Noether symmetry that is defined in the $n$-tangent bundle and is not vanishing on-shell, can be written as a canonical symmetry in an enlarged phase space, up to constraints that vanish on-shell. The proof is performed by the implementation of a change of variables from the the $n$-tangent bundle of the Lagrangian theory to an extension of the Hamiltonian formalism which is particularly suited for the case when the Lagrangian is singular. This result proves the as…
Using Lie symmetry methods for differential equations we have investigated the symmetries of a Lagrangian for a plane symmetric static spacetime. Perturbing this Lagrangian we explore its approximate symmetries. It has a non-trivial first-order approximate symmetry.
For a dynamical system defined by a singular Lagrangian, canonical Noether symmetries are characterized in terms of their commutation relations with the evolution operators of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms. Separate characterizations are given in phase space, in velocity space, and through an evolution operator that links both spaces.
Guided by the symmetries of the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion, a study of the constrained dynamics of singular Lagrangians is presented. We find that these equations of motion admit a generalized Lie symmetry, and on the Lagrangian phase space the generators of this symmetry lie in the kernel of the Lagrangian two-form. Solutions of the energy equation\textemdash called second-order, Euler-Lagrange vector fields (SOELVFs)\textemdash with integral flows that have this symmetry are determined. Importantly, while second-order, Lagrangian vector fields are not such a solution, it is always po…
A systematic analysis of the symmetries of topological 3D gravity with torsion and a cosmological term, in the first order formalism, has been performed in details - both in the hamiltonian and lagrangian formalisms. This illuminates the connection between the symmetries of curved spacetime (diffeomorphisms plus local Lorentz transformations) with the Poincare gauge transformations. The Poincare gauge symmetries of the action are shown to be inequivalent to its gauge symmetries. Finally, the complete analysis is compared with the metric formulation where the diffeomorphism symmetry is shown to…
We have systematically computed the generators of the symmetries arising in Poincare gauge theory formulation of gravity, both in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. This was done using a completely Lagrangian approach. The results are expected to be valid in any dimensions, as seen through lifting the results of the 2+1 dimensional example into the 3+1 dimensional one.
We reformulate the standard Lagrangian formalism to a reparameterisation invariant Lagrangian formalism by means of Finsler and Kawaguchi geometry. In our formalism, various types of symmetries that appears in theories of physics are expressed geometrically by symmetries of Finsler (Kawaguchi) metric, and the conservation law of energy-momentum is a part of Euler-Lagrange equations. The application to scalar field, Dirac field, electromagnetic field and general relativity coupled to perfect fluid (added: ver.3) are discussed. By this formalism, we try to propose an alternative definition of en…
The generalized Lie symmetries of almost regular Lagrangians are studied, and their impact on the evolution of dynamical systems is determined. It is found that if the action has a generalized Lie symmetry, then the Lagrangian is necessarily singular; the converse is not true, as we show with a specific example. It is also found that the generalized Lie symmetry of the action is a Lie subgroup of the generalized Lie symmetry of the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion. The converse is once again not true, and there are systems for which the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion have a generalized L…
Noether symmetries from geodetic Lagrangian for time-conformal plane symmetric spacetime are presented. Here, time conformal factor is used to find the approximate Noether symmetries. This is a generalization of the idea discussed by I. Hussain and A. Noether symmetries from geodetic Lagrangian for time-conformal plane symmetric spacetime are presented. We study the differences between Poincare and canonical hamiltonian symmetries in models of gravity through the corresponding Noether identities and show that they are equivalent modulo trivial gauge symmetries.
A formal analogy between the Friedmann equation of relativistic cosmology and models of convective-radiative cooling/heating of a body (including Newton's, Dulong-Petit's, Newton-Stefan's laws, and a generalization) is discussed. The analogy highlights Lagrangians, symmetries, and mathematical properties of the solutions of these cooling laws.
We discuss the relationship between the Noether point symmetries of the geodesic Lagrangian, in a (pseudo)Riemannian manifold, with the elements of the Homothetic algebra of the space. We observe that the classification problem of the Noether symmetries for the geodesic Lagrangian is equivalent with the classification of the Homothetic algebra of the space, which in the case of a Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker spacetime is a well-known result in the literature.
We consider some general consequences of adding pure gravitational Chern-Simons term to manifestly diff-covariant theories of gravity. Extending the result of a previous paper we enlarge the class of metrics for which the inclusion of a gCS term in the action does not affect solutions and corresponding physical quantities. In the case in which such solutions describe black holes (of general horizon topology) we show that the black hole entropy is also unchanged. We arrive at these conclusions by proving three general theorems and studying their consequences. One of the theorems states that the…
The forms of coupling of the scalar field with gravity, appearing in the induced theory of gravity, and the potential are found in the Kantowski-Sachs model under the assumption that the Lagrangian admits Noether symmetry. The form thus obtained makes the Lagrangian degenerate. The constrained dynamics thus evolved due to such degeneracy has been analysed and a solution has also been presented which is inflationary in behaviour. It has further been shown that there exists other technique to explore the dynamical symmetries of the Lagrangian and that is simply by inspecting the field equations.…
We investigate the approximate Noether gauge symmetries of the geodesic Lagrangian for the Bardeen spacetime model. This is accommodated by a set of new approximate Noether gauge symmetry relations for the perturbed geodesic Lagrangian in the spacetime. A detailed analysis to the spacetime of Bardeen model up to third-order approximate Noether gauge symmetries is presented.
Given the non-canonical relationship between variables used in the Hamiltonian formulations of the Einstein-Hilbert action (due to Pirani, Schild, Skinner (PSS) and Dirac) and the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) action, and the consequent difference in the gauge transformations generated by the first-class constraints of these two formulations, the assumption that the Lagrangians from which they were derived are equivalent leads to an apparent contradiction that has been called "the non-canonicity puzzle". In this work we shall investigate the group properties of two symmetries derived for the Ein…
This paper is devoted to study the energy content of colliding plane waves using approximate Noether symmetries. For this purpose, we use approximate Lie symmetry method of Lagrangian for differential equations. We formulate the first-order perturbed Lagrangian for colliding plane electromagnetic and gravitational waves. It is shown that in both cases, there does not exist
We consider and derive the gravitational soft theorem up to the sub-subleading power from the perspective of effective Lagrangians. The emergent soft gauge symmetries of the effective Lagrangian provide a transparent explanation of why soft graviton emission is universal to sub-subleading power, but gauge boson emission is not. They also suggest a physical interpretation of the form of the soft factors in terms of the charges related to the soft transformations and the kinematics of the multipole expansion. The derivation is done directly at Lagrangian level, resulting in an operatorial form o…
We consider the application of the theory of symmetries of coupled ordinary differential equations to the case of reparametrisation invariant Lagrangians quadratic in the velocities; such Lagrangians encompass all minisuperspace models. We find that, in order to acquire the maximum number of symmetry generators, one must (a) consider the lapse $N(t)$ among the degrees of freedom and (b) allow the action of the generator on the Lagrangian and/or the equations of motion to produce a multiple of the constraint, rather than strictly zero. The result of this necessary modification of the standard t…
Through this article, I will overview the use of Noether symmetry approach in discussing the integration of geodesic equations for the geodesic Lagrangians of spacetimes. I will also give some examples to reveal the efficiency of Noether symmetry approach by finding the first integrals related for the geodesic Lagrangians of the Gödel-type, Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström and Kerr spacetimes. After obtaining the approximate Noether symmetries of the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström and Kerr spacetimes, the first integrals associated with each of approximate Noether symmetries have been inte…
