We compute explicitly the peakon-antipeakon solution of the Camassa-Holm equation $u_t-u_{txx}+3uu_x-2u_xu_{xx}-uu_{xxx}=0$ in the non-symmetric and $α$-dissipative case. The solution experiences wave breaking in finite time, and the explicit solution illuminates the interplay between the various variables.
In this paper, we prove an orbital stability result for the Degasperis-Procesi peakon with respect to perturbations having a momentum density that is first negative and then positive. This leads to the orbital stability of the antipeakon-peakon profile with respect to such perturbations.
The Camassa-Holm equation possesses well-known peaked solitary waves that can travel to both directions. The positive ones travel to the right and are called peakon whereas the negative ones travel to the left and are called antipeakons. Their orbital stability has been established by Constantin and Strauss in \cite{CS1}. In \cite{EL2} we have proven the stability of trains of peakons. Here, we continue this study by extending the stability result to the case of ordered trains of anti-peakons and peakons.
We give a proof for the uniqueness of dissipative solution for the Camassa-Holm equation with some peakon-antipeakon initial data following Dafermos' earlier resut in [5] on the Hunter-Saxton equation. Our result shows that two existing global existence frameworks, through the vanishing viscosity method by Xin-Zhang in [11] and the transformation of coordinate method for dissipative solutions by Bressan-Constantin in [3], give the same solution, for a special but typical initial data forming finite time gradient blowup.
We continue our investigation on the asymptotic stability of the peakon. In a first step we extend our asymptotic stability result [29] in the class of functions whose negative part of the momentum density is supported in ] -- $\infty$, x 0 ] and the positive part in [x 0 , +$\infty$[ for some x 0 $\in$ R. In a second step this enables us to prove the asymptotic stability of well-ordered train of antipeakons-peakons and, in particular, of the antipeakon-peakon profile. Finally, in the appendix we prove that in the case of a non negative momentum density the energy at the left of any given poin…
For the Novikov equation, on both the line and the circle, we construct a 2-peakon solution with an asymmetric antipeakon-peakon initial profile whose $H^s$-norm for $s<3/2$ is arbitrarily small. Immediately after the initial time, both the antipeakon and peakon move in the positive direction, and a collision occurs in arbitrarily small time. Moreover, at the collision time the $H^s$-norm of the solution becomes arbitrarily large when $5/4<s<3/2$, thus resulting in norm inflation and ill-posedness. However, when $s<5/4$, the solution at the collision time coincides with a second solitary antip…
The $μ$-Camassa-Holm ($μ$CH) equation is a nonlinear integrable partial differential equation closely related to the Camassa-Holm equation. We prove that the periodic peaked traveling wave solutions (peakons) of the $μ$CH equation are orbitally stable.
We use a sticky particle method to show global existence of (energy) conservative sticky $N$-peakon solutions to the modified Camassa-Holm equation. A dispersion regularization is provided as a selection principle for the uniqueness of conservative $N$-peakon solutions. The dispersion limit avoids the collision between peakons, and numerical results show that the dispersion limit is exactly the sticky peakons. At last, when the splitting of peakons is allowed, we give an example to show the non-uniqueness of conservative solutions.
In this paper, we study the following generalized Camassa-Holm equation with both cubic and quadratic nonlinearities: $$ m_{t}+k_{1}(3uu_{x}m+u^2m_{x})+k_{2}(2mu_{x}+m_{x}u)=0, \quad m=u-u_{xx}, $$ which is presented as a linear combination of the Novikov equation and the Camassa-Holm equation with constants $k_{1}$ and $k_{2}$. The model is a cubic generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation. It is shown that the equation admits single-peaked soliton and periodic peakons.
We show that wave breaking occurs for the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation. Next we classify all traveling wave solutions of the modified Camassa-Holm equation in the weak sense via parametrization of their maxima, minima and wave velocity constants. This equation is shown to admit in addition to more popular solutions like smooth traveling waves and peakons, some not so well-known traveling waves as, for example, kinks, cuspons, composite waves and stumpons. Moreover, explicit peakons in terms of Jacobian elliptic functions are found.
This paper is devoted to an integrable two-component Camassa-Holm system with cubic nonlinearity, which includes the cubic Camassa-Holm equation (also called the Fokas-Olver-Rosenau-Qiao equation) as a special case. The one peaked solitons (peakons) and two peakon solutions are described in an explicit formula. Then, the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the system is studied. Moreover, we target at the precise blow-up scenario for strong solutions to the system, and establish a new blow-up result with respect to the initial data.
In this paper we mainly investigate the Cauchy problem of a three-component Camassa-Holm system. By using the method of approximation of smooth solutions, a regularization technique and the special structure of the system, we prove the existence of global weak solutions to the system.
Using a generalized framework that consists of evolution of the solution to the Camassa- Holm equation and its energy measure, we establish the global-in-time orbital stability of peakons with respect to the perturbed (energy) conservative solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation. Especially, we extend the H1-stability result obtained by Constantin and Strauss (Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 53(5), 603-610, 2000) globally-in-time, even after the perturbed solutions experience wave breaking. In addition, our result also shows that the singular part of the energy measure of the perturbed solutions will r…
In this paper, we investigate the orbital stability of peakons for a modified Camassa-Holm equation with cubic nonlinearity derived from the two-dimensional Euler equation. By overcoming the difficulties caused by one of the complicated conservation laws and introducing a new auxiliary function, we prove the orbital stability of peakons for the equation.
In this paper, we present a dispersive regularization for the modified Camassa-Holm equation (mCH) in one dimension, which is achieved through a double mollification for the system of ODEs describing trajectories of $N$-peakon solutions. From this regularized system of ODEs, we obtain approximated $N$-peakon solutions with no collision between peakons. Then, a global $N$-peakon solution for the mCH equation is obtained, whose trajectories are global Lipschitz functions and do not cross each other. When $N=2$, the limiting solution is a sticky peakon weak solution. By a limiting process, we als…
In this paper, we study orbital stability of peakons for the generalized modified Camassa-Holm (gmCH) equation, which is a natural higher-order generalization of the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation, and admits Hamiltonian form and single peakons. We first show that the single peakon is the usual weak solution of the PDEs. Some sign invariant properties and conserved densities are presented. Next, by constructing the corresponding auxiliary function $h(t,\,x)$ and establishing a delicate polynomial inequality relating to the two conserved densities with the maximal value of approximate sol…
Consideration here is a generalized $μ$-type integrable equation, which can be regarded as a generalization to both the $μ$-Camassa-Holm and modified $μ$-Camassa-Holm equations. It is shown that the proposed equation is formally integrable with the Lax-pair and the bi-Hamiltonian structure and its scale limit is an integrable model of hydrodynamical systems describing short capillary-gravity waves. Local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in the suitable Sobolev space is established by the viscosity method. Existence of peaked traveling-wave solutions and formation of singularities of soluti…
We study special properties of solutions to the IVP associated to the Camassa-Holm equation on the line related to the regularity and the decay of solutions. The first aim is to show how the regularity on the initial data is transferred to the corresponding solution in a class containing the "peakon solutions". In particular, we shall show that the local regularity is similar to that exhibited by the solution of the inviscid Burger's equation with the same initial datum. The second goal is to prove that the decay results obtained in a paper of Himonas, Misiołek, Ponce, and Zhou extend to the c…
We prove a Liouville property for uniformly almost localized (up to translations) H 1-global solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation with a momentum density that is a non negative finite measure. More precisely, we show that such solution has to be a peakon. As a consequence, we prove that peakons are asymptotically stable in the class of H 1-functions with a momentum density that belongs to M + (R). Finally, we also get an asymptotic stability result for train of peakons.
In this article we study a new kind of unbounded solutions to the Novikov equation, found via a Lie symmetry analysis. These solutions exhibit peakon creation, i.e., these solutions are smooth up until a certain finite time, at which a peak is created. We show that the functions are still weak solutions for those times where the peak lives. We also find similar unbounded solutions with peakon creation in the related Camassa-Holm equation, by making an ansatz inspired by the Novikov solutions. Finally, we see that the same ansatz for the Degasperis-Procesi equation yields unbounded solutions wh…
In this paper, we investigate the orbital stability problem of peakons for a modified Camassa-Holm equation with both quadratic and cubic nonlinearity. This equation was derived from integrable theory and admits peaked soliton (peakon) and multipeakon solutions. By constructing two suitable piecewise functions, we establish the polynomial inequality relating to two conserved quantities and the maximum of the solution to this equation. The error estimate between the maximum of the solution and the peakon then follows from the structure of the polynomial inequality. Finally, we prove that a wave…
The Novikov equation is a Camassa-Holm type equation with cubic nonlinearity. This paper aims to prove the asymptotic stability of peakons solutions under $H^1(\mathbb{R})$-perturbations satisfying that their associated momentum density defines a non-negative Radon measure. Motivated by Molinet's work, we shall first prove a Liouville property for $H^1(\mathbb{R})$ global solutions belonging to a certain class of almost localized functions. More precisely, we show that such solutions have to be a peakon. The main difficulty in our analysis in comparison to the Camassa-Holm case comes from the …
It is well-known that peakons in the Camassa-Holm equation are $H^1$-orbitally stable thanks to the presence of conserved quantities and properties of peakons as constrained energy minimizers. By using the method of characteristics, we prove that piecewise $C^1$ perturbations to peakons grow in time in spite of their stability in the $H^1$-norm. We also show that the linearized stability analysis near peakons contradicts the $H^1$-orbital stability result, hence passage from linear to nonlinear theory is false in $H^1$.
The Novikov equation is an integrable Camassa-Holm type equation with cubic nonlinearity and admits the periodic peakons. In this paper, it is shown that the periodic peakons are the global periodic weak solutions to the Novikov equation and we also prove the orbital stability of the periodic peakons for Novikov equation. By using the invariants of the equation and controlling the extrema of the solution, it is demonstrated that the shapes of these periodic peakons are stable under small perturbations in the energy space.
In this paper, we study traveling wave solutions and peakon weak solutions of the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation with dispersive term $2ku_x$ for $k\in\mathbb{R}$. We study traveling wave solutions through a Hamiltonian system obtained from the mCH equation by using a nonlinear transformation. The typical traveling wave solutions given by this Hamiltonian system are unbounded or multi-valued. We provide a method, called patching technic, to truncate these traveling wave solutions and patch different segments to obtain patched bounded single-valued peakon weak solutions which satisfy jump…
Compared with the two-component Camassa-Holm system, the modified two-component Camassa-Holm system introduces a regularized density which makes possible the existence of solutions of lower regularity, and in particular of multipeakon solutions. In this paper, we derive a new pointwise invariant for the modified two-component Camassa-Holm system. The derivation of the invariant uses directly the symmetry of the system, following the classical argument of Noether's theorem. The existence of the multipeakon solutions can be directly inferred from this pointwise invariant. This derivation shows t…
In this paper, we investigate the orbital stability issue of a generalized higher-order Camassa-Holm (HOCH) equation, which is an higher-order extension of the quadratic CH equation. Firstly, we show that the HOCH equation admits a global weak peakon solution by paring it with ssome smooth test function. Secondly, with the help of two conserved quantities and the non-sgn-changing condition, we prove the orbital stability of this peakon solution in the energy space in the sense that its shape remains approximately the same for all times. Our results enrich the research of the orbital stability …
We consider singular solutions of a system of two cross-coupled Camassa-Holm (CCCH) equations. This CCCH system admits peakon solutions, but it is not in the two-component CH integrable hierarchy. The system is a pair of coupled Hamiltonian partial differential equations for two types of solutions on the real line, each of which separately possesses exp(-|x|) peakon solutions with a discontinuity in the first derivative at the peak. However, there are no self-interactions, so each of the two types of peakon solutions moves only under the induced velocity of the other type. We analyse the `walt…
Peakons are special weak solutions of a class of nonlinear partial differential equations modelling non-linear phenomena such as the breakdown of regularity and the onset of shocks. We show that the natural concept of weak solutions in the case of the modified Camassa-Holm equation studied in this paper is dictated by the distributional compatibility of its Lax pair and, as a result, it differs from the one proposed and used in the literature based on the concept of weak solutions used for equations of the Burgers type. Subsequently, we give a complete construction of peakon solutions satisfyi…
We prove spectral instability of peakons in the $b$-family of Camassa--Holm equations in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ that includes the integrable cases of $b = 2$ and $b = 3$. We start with a linearized operator defined on functions in $H^1(\mathbb{R}) \cap W^{1,\infty}(\mathbb{R})$ and extend it to a linearized operator defined on weaker functions in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. For $b \neq \frac{5}{2}$, the spectrum of the linearized operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ is proved to cover a closed vertical strip of the complex plane. For $b = \frac{5}{2}$, the strip shrinks to the imaginary axis, but an additional pai…
In this Letter we propose that for Lax integrable nonlinear partial differential equations the natural concept of weak solutions is implied by the compatibility condition for the respective distributional Lax pairs. We illustrate our proposal by comparing two concepts of weak solutions of the modified Camassa-Holm equation pointing out that in the peakon sector (a family of non-smooth solitons) only one of them, namely the one obtained from the distributional compatibility condition, supports the time invariance of the Sobolev $H^1$ norm.
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for a generalized integrable Camassa-Holm equation with both quadratic and cubic nonlinearity. By overcoming the difficulties caused by the complicated mixed nonlinear structure, we firstly establish the local well-posedness result in Besov spaces, and then present a precise blow-up scenario for strong solutions. Furthermore, we show the existence of single peakon by the method of analysis.
The Camassa-Holm equation possesses well-known peaked solitary waves that are called peakons. Their orbital stability has been established by Constantin and Strauss (2000). We prove here the stability of ordered trains of peakons. We also establish a result on the stability of multipeakons.
We prove that the peakons are asymptotically H 1-stable, under the flow of the Degasperis-Procesi equation, in the class of functions with a momentum density that belongs to M + (R). The key argument is a rigidity result for uniformly in time exponentially decaying global solutions that is shared by the Holm-Staley b-family of equations for b $\ge$ 1. This extends previous results obtained for the Camassa-Holm equation (b = 2).
In this paper we discuss integrable higher order equations {\em of Camassa-Holm (CH) type}. Our higher order CH-type equations are "geometrically integrable", that is, they describe one-parametric families of pseudo-spherical surfaces, in a sense explained in Section 1, and they are integrable in the sense of zero curvature formulation ($\simeq$ Lax pair) with infinitely many local conservation laws. The major focus of the present paper is on a specific fifth order CH-type equation admitting {\em pseudo-peakons} solutions, that is, weak bounded solutions with differentiable first derivative an…
Multipeakons are special solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation described by an integrable geodesic flow on a Riemannian manifold. We present a bi-Hamiltonian formulation of the system explicitly and write down formulae for the associated first integrals. Then we exploit the first integrals and present a novel approach to the problem of the dissipative prolongations of multipeakons after the collision time. We prove that an $n$-peakon after a collision becomes an $n-1$-peakon for which the momentum is preserved.
The modified Camassa-Holm equation (also called FORQ) is one of numerous $cousins$ of the Camassa-Holm equation possessing non-smoth solitons ($peakons$) as special solutions. The peakon sector of solutions is not uniquely defined: in one peakon sector (dissapative) the Sobolev $H^1$ norm is not preserved, in the other sector (conservative), introduced in [2], the time evolution of peakons leaves the $H^1$ norm invariant. In this Letter, it is shown that the conservative peakon equations of the modified Camassa-Holm can be given an appropriate Poisson structure relative to which the equations …
The Novikov equation is an integrable Camassa-Holm type equation with cubic nonlinearity. One of the most important features of this equation is the existence of peakon and multi-peakon solutions, i.e. peaked traveling waves behaving as solitons. This paper aims to prove both, the orbital and asymptotic stability of peakon trains solutions, i.e. multi-peakon solutions such that their initial configuration is increasingly ordered. Furthermore, we give an improvement of the orbital stability of a single peakon so that we can drop the non-negativity hypothesis on the momentum density. The same re…
In this paper we mainly study the Cauchy problem for a generalized Camassa-Holm equation. First, by using the Littlewood-Paley decomposition and transport equations theory, we establish the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the equation in Besov spaces. Then we give a simply blow-up criterion for the Cauchy problem of the equation. we present a blow-up result and the exact blow-up rate of strong solutions to the equation by making use of the conservation law and the obtained blow-up criterion. Finally, we verify that the system possesses peakon solutions.
The Camassa-Holm equation with linear dispersion was originally derived as an asymptotic equation in shallow water wave theory. Among its many interesting mathematical properties, which include complete integrability, perhaps the most striking is the fact that in the case where linear dispersion is absent it admits weak multi-soliton solutions - "peakons" - with a peaked shape corresponding to a discontinuous first derivative. There is a one-parameter family of generalized Camassa-Holm equations, most of which are not integrable, but which all admit peakon solutions. Numerical studies reported…
This work is devoted to the studies of a Hamilton--Jacobi equation with a quadratic and degenerate Hamiltonian, which comes from the dynamics of a multipeakon in the Camassa--Holm equation. It is given by a quadratic form with a singular positive semi-definite matrix. We increase the regularity of the value function considered in our previous paper, which is known to be the viscosity solution. We prove that for a two-peakon Hamiltonian such solutions are actually $1/2$-Hölder continuous in space and time-Lipschitz continuous. The time-Lipschitz regularity is proven in any dimension $N\geq 1$. …
In this paper we construct a global, continuous flow of solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation on the entire space $H^1$. Our solutions are conservative, in the sense that the total energy $\int (u^2+u_x^2) dx$ remains a.e. constant in time. Our new approach is based on a distance functional $J(u,v)$, defined in terms of an optimal transportation problem, which satisfies ${d\over dt} J(u(t), v(t))\leq κ\cdot J(u(t),v(t))$ for every couple of solutions. Using this new distance functional, we can construct arbitrary solutions as the uniform limit of multi-peakon solutions, and prove a general un…
A spectral and the inverse spectral problem are studied for the two-component modified Camassa-Holm type for measures associated to interlacing peaks. It is shown that the spectral problem is equivalent to an inhomogenous string problem with Dirichlet/Neumann boundary conditions. The inverse problem is solved by Stieltjes' continued fraction expansion, leading to an explicit construction of peakon solutions. Sufficient conditions for the global existence in $t$ are given. The large time asymptotics reveals that, asymptotically, peakons pair up to form bound states moving with constant speeds. …
In this paper, we prove that the existence and uniqueness of globally weak solutions to the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative Camassa-Holm equation in time weighted $H^1$ space. First, we derive an equivalent semi-linear system by introducing some new variables, and present the globally conservative solutions of this equation in time weighted $H^1$ space. Second, we show that the peakon solutions are conservative weak solutions in $H^1.$ Finally, given a conservative solution, we introduce a set of auxiliary variables tailored to this particular solution, and prove that these variables…
We consider a Lax pair found by Xia, Qiao and Zhou for a family of two-component analogues of the Camassa-Holm equation, including an arbitrary function $H$, and show that this apparent freedom can be removed via a combination of a reciprocal transformation and a gauge transformation, which reduces the system to triangular form. The resulting triangular system may or may not be integrable, depending on the choice of $H$. In addition, we apply the formal series approach of Dubrovin and Zhang to show that scalar equations of Camassa-Holm type with homogeneous nonlinear terms of degree greater th…
We consider an initial value problem for a Hamilton--Jacobi equation with a quadratic and degenerate Hamiltonian. Our Hamiltonian comes from the dynamics of $N$-peakon in the Camassa--Holm equation. It is given by a quadratic form with a singular positive semi-definite matrix. Such a problem does not fall into the standard theory of viscosity solutions. Also viability related results, sometimes used to deal with degenerate Hamiltonians, do not seem applicable in our case. We prove the global existence of a viscosity solution by looking at the associated optimal control problem and showing that…
The Degasperis-Procesi equation can be derived as a member of a one-parameter family of asymptotic shallow water approximations to the Euler equations with the same asymptotic accuracy as that of the Camassa-Holm equation. In this paper, we study the orbital stability problem of the peaked solitons to the Degasperis-Procesi equation on the line. By constructing a Liapunov function, we prove that the shapes of these peakon solitons are stable under small perturbations.
In this paper, we study the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation in Lagrangian coordinates. For some initial data $m_0$, we show that classical solutions to this equation blow up in finite time $T_{max}$. Before $T_{max}$, existence and uniqueness of classical solutions are established. Lifespan for classical solutions is obtained: $T_{max}\geq \frac{1}{||m_0||_{L^\infty}||m_0||_{L^1}}.$ And there is a unique solution $X(ξ,t)$ to the Lagrange dynamics which is a strictly monotonic function of $ξ$ for any $t\in[0,T_{max})$: $X_ξ(\cdot,t)>0$. As $t$ approaching $T_{max}$, we prove that classical…
In this paper, we prove the global Hadamard well-posedness of strong solutions to a non-isospectral two-component cubic Camassa-Holm system in the critical Besov space $B_{2,1}^{\frac{1}{2}}(\mathbb{T})$. Our results shows that in comparison with the well-known work for classic Camassa-Holm-type equations, the existence of global solution only relies on the $L^1$-integrability of the variable coefficients $α(t)$ and $γ(t)$, but nothing to do with the shape or smoothness of the initial data. The key ingredient of the proof hinges on the careful analysis of the mutual effect among two component …
We consider a two-component Hamiltonian system of partial differential equations with quadratic nonlinearities introduced by Popowicz, which has the form of a coupling between the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations. Despite having reductions to these two integrable partial differential equations, the Popowicz system itself is not integrable. Nevertheless, as one of the authors showed with Irle, it admits distributional solutions of peaked soliton (peakon) type, with the dynamics of $N$ peakons being determined by a Hamiltonian system on a phase space of dimension $3N$. As well as th…
This paper investigates the Cauchy problem of a generalized Camassa-Holm equation with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities (alias the mCH-Novikov-CH equation), which is a generalization of some special equations such as the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, the modified CH (mCH) equation ((alias the Fokas-Olver-Rosenau-Qiao equation), the Novikov equation, the CH-mCH equation, the mCH-Novikov equation, and the CH-Novikov equation. We first show the local well-posedness for the strong solutions of the mCH-Novikov-CH equation in Besov spaces by means of the Littlewood-Paley theory and the transport equ…
We consider the scaling similarity solutions of two integrable cubically nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) that admit peaked soliton (peakon) solutions, namely the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation and Novikov's equation. By making use of suitable reciprocal transformations, which map the mCH equation and Novikov's equation to a negative mKdV flow and a negative Sawada-Kotera flow, respectively, we show that each of these scaling similarity reductions is related via a hodograph transformation to an equation of Painlevé type: for the mCH equation, its reduction is of second ord…
Considered in this paper is the modified Camassa-Holm equation with cubic nonlinearity, which is integrable and admits the single peaked solitons and multi-peakon solutions. The short-wave limit of this equation is known as the short-pulse equation. The main investigation is the Cauchy problem of the modified Camassa-Holm equation with qualitative properties of its solutions. It is firstly shown that the equation is locally well-posed in a range of the Besov spaces. The blow-up scenario and the lower bound of the maximal time of existence are then determined. A blow-up mechanism for solutions …
