The recent observation of high-temperature superconductivity in one unit cell thick FeSe on SrTiO3 (1UC FeSe/STO)1 initiated a new pathway to realizing even higher transition temperature (Tc) superconductors and established a promising different paradigm to understand the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity2-10. However, independent confirmation on the high Tc value, the role of capping layer in reducing Tc, and the underlying mechanism of the novel superconductivity remain open questions11. Here we report a time-resolved study of the excited state ultrafast dynamics of 1UC FeSe/STO protected by 2UC FeTe capping layer, and identify the superconducting Tc to be 68 (-5/+2) K. We found a coherent acoustic phonon mode in the capping layer, which provides an additional decay channel to the gluing bosons and explains the reduced Tc value. Our investigation supports the phonon pairing scenario.
We have studied the effect of tensile strain on the superconductivity in FeSe films. 50 nm, 100 nm, and 200 nm FeSe films were grown on MgO, SrTiO$_3$, and LaAlO$_3$ substrates by using a pulsed laser deposition technique. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the tetragonal phase is dominant in all of our FeSe films. The 50 nm FeSe films on MgO and SrTiO$_3$ are under tensile strain, while the 50 nm FeSe film on LaAlO$_3$ and the other thick FeSe films are unstrained. Superconducting transitions have been observed in unstrained FeSe films with T$_{onset}$ $\approx$ 8 K, which is close to the…
Among the recently discovered iron-based superconductors, ultrathin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO3 substrates have uniquely evolved into a high superconducting-transition-temperature (TC) material. The mechanisms for the high-TC superconductivity are ongoing debate mainly with the superconducting gap characterized with in-situ analysis for FeSe films grown by bottom-up molecular-beam epitaxy. Here, we demonstrate the alternative access to investigate the high-TC superconductivity in ultrathin FeSe with top-down electrochemical etching technique in three-terminal transistor configuration. In add…
Formation of electronic nematicity is a common thread of unconventional superconductors. In iron-based materials, the long-range nematic order is revealed by the orthorhombic lattice distortion, which importance is a highly controversial topic due the small magnitude of the distortion. Here, we study the local crystal structure of FeSe and its interaction with electronic degrees of freedom using ultrafast electron diffraction, x-ray pair distribution function analysis, and transmission electron microscopy and find a significant lattice response to local nematicity. The study demonstrates how l…
The coupling between superconductivity and othorhombic distortion is studied in vapor-grown FeSe single crystals using high-resolution thermal-expansion measurements. In contrast to the Ba122-based (Ba122) superconductors, we find that superconductivity does not reduce the orthorhombicity below Tc. Instead we find that superconductivity couples strongly to the in-plane area, which explains the large hydrostatic pressure effects. We discuss our results in light of the spinnematic scenario and argue that FeSe has many features quite different from the typical Fe-based superconductors.
We report on the emergence of two disconnected superconducting domes in alkali-metal potassium (K)-doped FeSe ultra-thin films grown on graphitized SiC(0001). The superconductivity exhibits hypersensitivity to K dosage in the lower-Tc dome, whereas in the heavily electron-doped higher-Tc dome it becomes spatially homogeneous and robust against disorder, supportive of a conventional Cooper-pairing mechanism. Furthermore, the heavily K-doped multilayer FeSe films all reveal a large superconducting gap of ~ 14 meV, irrespective of film thickness, verifying the higher-Tc superconductivity only in …
Understanding the superconductivity at the interface of FeSe/SrTiO3 is a problem of great contemporary interest due to the significant increase in critical temperature (Tc) compared to that of bulk FeSe, as well as the possibility of an unconventional pairing mechanism and topological superconductivity. We report a study of the influence of a capping layer on superconductivity in thin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO3 using molecular beam epitaxy. We used in vacuo four-probe electrical resistance measurements and ex situ magneto-transport measurements to examine the effect of three capping layers …
We report the superconductivity evolution of one unit cell (1-UC) and 2-UC FeSe films on SrTiO3(001) substrates with potassium (K) adsorption. By in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurement, we find that the superconductivity in 1-UC FeSe films is continuously suppressed with increasing K coverage, whereas non-superconducting 2-UC FeSe films become superconducting with a gap of ~17 meV or ~11 meV depending on whether the underlying 1-UC films are superconducting or not. This work explicitly reveals that the interface electron-phonon coupling is strongly related to the charge transfer a…
We prepared single unit cell FeSe films on GaO$_{2-δ}$ terminated perovskite NdGaO$_{3}$(110) substrates and performed ex situ transport and scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements on the FeTe protected films. Our experimental measurements showed that the single unit cell FeSe films interfaced with GaO$_{2-δ}$ layer are electron doped via interface charge transfer. Most importantly, this type of heterostructure can host interface enhanced superconductivity with an onset temperature of about 28 K, which is much higher than the value of 8 K in bulk FeSe. Our work indicates that Fe…
Iron-based superconductors are well known for their complex interplay between structure, magnetism and superconductivity. FeSe offers a particularly fascinating example. This material has been intensely discussed because of its extended nematic phase, whose relationship with magnetism is not obvious. Superconductivity in FeSe is highly tunable, with the superconducting transition temperature, $T_\mathrm{c}$, ranging from 8 K in bulk single crystals at ambient pressure to almost 40 K under pressure or in intercalated systems, and to even higher temperatures in thin films. In this topical review…
Recently, interface has been employed to enhance superconductivity in the single-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3(001)(STO) with a possible Tc of ~ 80 K, which is nearly ten times of the Tc of bulk FeSe and is above the Tc record of 56 K for the bulk Fe-based superconductors. This work together with those on superconducting oxides interfaces revives the long-standing idea that electron pairing at a two-dimensional (2D) interface between two different materials is a potential path to high transition temperature (Tc) superconductivity. Subsequent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES)…
The iron-based superconductor FeSe offers a unique possibility to study the interplay of superconductivity with purely nematic as well magnetic-nematic order by pressure (p) tuning. By measuring specific heat under p up to 2.36GPa, we study the multiple phases in FeSe using a thermodynamic probe. We conclude that superconductivity is bulk across the entire p range and competes with magnetism. Our analysis suggests that superconducting and magnetic fluctuations exist over a wide temperature range above the respective bulk transition temperatures, whenever magnetism is present. These observation…
To elucidate the mechanisms behind the enhanced $T_c$ in monolayer (1ML) FeSe on SrTiO$_3$ (STO), we grew highly strained 1ML FeSe on the rectangular (100) face of rutile TiO$_2$, and observed the coexistence of replica bands and superconductivity with a $T_c$ of 63 K. From the similar $T_c$ between this system and 1ML FeSe on STO (001), we conclude that strain and dielectric constant are likely unimportant to the enhanced $T_c$ in these systems. A systematic comparison of 1ML FeSe on TiO$_2$ with other systems in the FeSe family shows that while charge transfer alone can enhance $T_c$, it is …
Since the dramatic interface enhancement of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) was reported in one unit-cell FeSe film grown on SrTiO3 substrate (1-UC FeSe/STO) by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), related research on this system has become a new frontier in condensed matter physics. In this paper, we present a brief review on this rapidly developing field, mainly focusing on the superconducting properties of 1-UC FeSe/STO. Experimental evidences for the high-temperature superconductivity in 1-UC FeSe/STO, including the direct evidences revealed by transport and diamagnetic measurements, …
Single crystals FeSe_x have been grown in evacuated sealed quartz tube using a NaCl/KCl flux. The products include two crystal structures of tetragon and hexagon. The electronic transport and magnetic properties measurements of FeSe_x single crystal exhibits a superconducting transition at about 10K.
Superconductivity was recently found in the simple tetragonal FeSe structure. Recent studies suggest that FeSe is unconventional, with the symmetry of the superconducting pairing state still under debate. To tackle these problems, clean single crystals and thin films are required. Here we report the fabrication of superconducting beta-phase FeSe1-x thin films on different substrates using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Quite interestingly, the crystal orientation, and thus, superconductivity in these thin films is sensitive to the growth temperature. At 320C, films grow preferably …
Interface-enhanced high-temperature superconductivity in one unit-cell (UC) FeSe film on SrTiO3(001) (STO) substrate has recently attracted much attention in condensed matter physics and material science. Here, by ex situ transport measurements, we report on the superconductivity in FeSe ultra-thin films with different thickness on STO substrate. We find that the onset superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decreases with increasing film thickness of FeSe, which is opposite to the behavior usually observed in traditional superconductor films. By systematic post-annealing of 5 UC FeSe film…
The effect of Co doping on supercoductivity of FeSe$_{0.4}$Te$_{0.6}$ single crystals is investigated. The superconducting transition temperature decreases linearly for Co doping with the rate -0.75 K/(Co %). On the other hand, the residual resistivity increase is less than 50 $/mu/Omega$cm for 4 % Co doping. These data are consistent with the sign changing interband scattering mechanism of superconductivity ($s_/pm$ symmetry).
Synthesis of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3, with greatly enhanced superconductivity compared to bulk FeSe, remains difficult. Lengthy annealing within a certain temperature window is always required to achieve superconducting samples as reported by different groups around the world, but the mechanism of annealing in inducing superconductivity has not been elucidated. We grow FeSe films on SrTiO3 by molecular beam epitaxy and adjust the stoichiometry by depositing additional small amounts of Fe atoms. The monolayer films become superconducting after the Fe deposition without any annealing, and show …
We report protonation in several compounds by an ionic-liquid-gating method, with optimized gating conditions. This leads to single superconducting phases for several compounds. Non-volatility of protons allow post-gating magnetization and transport measurements. The superconducting transition temperature $T_C$ is enhanced to 43.5~K for FeSe$_{0.93}$S$_{0.07}$, and 41~K for FeSe after protonation. Superconductivity with $T_c$$\approx$15~K for ZrNCl, $\approx$7.2~K for 1$T$-TaS$_2$, and $\approx$3.8~K for Bi$_2$Se$_3$ are induced after protonation. Electric transport in protonated FeSe$_{0.93}$…
The enhanced superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on titanates opens a fascinating pathway towards the rational design of high-temperature superconductors. Utilizing the state-of-the-art oxide plus chalcogenide molecular beam epitaxy systems in situ connected to a synchrotron angle-resolved photoemission spectroscope, epitaxial LaTiO3 layers with varied atomic thicknesses are inserted between monolayer FeSe and SrTiO3, for systematic modulation of interfacial chemical potential. With the dramatic increase of electron accumulation at the LaTiO3-SrTiO3 surface, providing a substantial surge of wor…
The transition from insulator to superconductor was achieved in the non-superconducting FeSe ultrathin film via simple Mg coating technique in present work. It was found that in non-superconducting FeSe ultrathin film without Mg coating, insulating \b{eta}-Fe1-xSe phase with iron-vacancy disorders is the main phase and more likely to be the parent phase of FeSe superconducting system. Proper Mg coating on the surface of FeSe films can lead to Mg entering FeSe crystal lattice to fill up these Fe vacancies rather than replace Fe. Simultaneously, additional electron doping is introduced and the e…
We report high temperature superconductivity in one unit-cell (1-UC) FeSe films grown on STO(110) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. By in-situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurement, we observed a superconducting gap as large as 17 meV. Transport measurements on 1-UC FeSe/STO(110) capped with FeTe layers reveal superconductivity with an onset TC of 31.6 K and an upper critical magnetic field of 30.2 T. We also find that the TC can be further increased by an external electric field, but the effect is smaller than that on STO(001) substrate. The study points out the important roles of in…
FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ thin films with PbO-type structure are successfully grown on MgO(100) and LaSrAlO$_{4}$(001) substrates from FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x+d}$ polycrystalline targets by pulsed-laser deposition. The film deposited on the MgO substrate (film thickness $\sim$ 63 nm) shows superconductivity at 6.7 K (onset) and 5.5 K (zero resistivity). On the other hand, the film deposited on the LaSrAlO$_{4}$ substrate (film thickness $\sim$ 52 nm) exhibits only the onset of superconducting transition at 2.6 K, but does not show zero resistivity. This indicates the strong influence of epitaxial strain…
Monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO$_3$ provides a new playground for high-Tc superconductivity. A recent study shows the importance of stripy instability for superconductivity enhancement in FeSe/SrTiO3. However, it is still under debate whether such a stripe phase is ubiquitously bound to the interfacial superconductivity. Here, we report on molecular beam epitaxy growth and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study of FeSe films on BaTiO$_3$(001). We find that the stripe phase is more prominent in FeSe/BaTiO$_3$. Long-range stripes exist in bilayer and triple-layer FeSe films at 4 K and…
Finding of unconventional superconductivity (USC) in FeSe in an electronic "normal" state with broken $C_{4v}$ rotational symmetry testifies to the diversity of pairing states in Fe-based superconductors. Moreover, such USC emerges as a direct instability of a normal state without Landau Fermi liquid quasiparticles, increasingly dubbed a `strange' metal. Here, we combine inputs from a first-principles correlated electronic structure method (LDA+DMFT) and symmetry analyses to propose a novel mechanism for unconventional nodal superconductivity as a direct instability of an incoherent bad-metal …
In this study, we fabricate 5-30-nm-thick films of FeSe/STO using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The grown films exhibit superconductivity with an onset $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ that is much higher than that of bulk FeSe under ambient pressure. The observed $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ values are exceptionally high in terms of the strain vs. $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ relationship of the same material established so far. Furthermore, $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ increases as the film thickness decreases, except for films thinner than 10 nm. This thickness dependence of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ is in good agreement with the results reported fo…
We report the superconductivity at above 30 K in a new FeSe-layer compound K0.8Fe2Se2 (nominal composition) achieved by metal K intercalating in between FeSe layers. It is isostructural to BaFe2As2 and possesses the highest Tc for FeSe-layer materials so far under ambient pressure. Hall effect indicates the carriers are dominated by electron in this superconductor. We confirm that the observed superconductivity at above 30 K is due to this new FeSe-based 122 phase. Our results demonstrate that FeSe-layer materials are really remarkable superconductors via structure and carrier modulation.
The influence of uniform pressures $P$ up to 5 kbar on the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ was studied for the FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ ($x=0$, 0.85, 0.88 and 0.9) system. For the first time, we observed a change in sign of the pressure effect on $T_c$ when going from FeSe to tellurium rich alloys. This has allowed to specify the pressure derivative d$T_c$/d$P$ for the system as a function of composition. The observed dependence was compared with results of the {\em ab initio} calculations of electronic structure and magnetism of FeSe, FeTe and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, and also with our …
The latest discovery of high temperature superconductivity signature in single-layer FeSe is significant because it is possible to break the superconducting critical temperature ceiling (maximum Tc~55 K) that has been stagnant since the discovery of Fe-based superconductivity in 2008. It also blows the superconductivity community by surprise because such a high Tc is unexpected in FeSe system with the bulk FeSe exhibiting a Tc at only 8 K at ambient pressure which can be enhanced to 38 K under high pressure. The Tc is still unusually high even considering the newly-discovered intercalated FeSe…
Combining the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements, we construct a tight-binding model suitable for describing the band structure of monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO$_{3}$. Then we propose a possible pairing function, which can well describe the gap anisotropy observed by ARPES and has a hidden sign-changing characteristic. At last, as a test of this pairing function we further study the nonmagnetic impurity-induced bound states, to be verified by future STM experiments.
Superconductivity with transition temperature Tc above 40 K was observed in protonated FeSe (Hy-FeSe) previously with the ionic liquid of EMIM-BF4 used in the electrochemical process. However, the real superconducting phase is not clear until now, and detailed structural, magnetization and electrical transport measurements are lacking. By using similar protonating technique on FeSe single crystals, we obtained superconducting samples with Tc above 40 K. We show that the obtained superconducting phase is not Hy-FeSe but actually an organic-ion (C6H11N2+ referred to as EMIM+)-intercalated phase …
We have studied the structural and superconducting properties of tetragonal FeSe under pressures up to 26GPa using synchrotron radiation and diamond anvil cells. The bulk modulus of the tetragonal phase is 28.5(3)GPa, much smaller than the rest of Fe based superconductors. At 12GPa we observe a phase transition from the tetragonal to an orthorhombic symmetry. The high pressure orthorhombic phase has a higher Tc reaching 34K at 22GPa.
In contrast to its bulk crystals, the FeSe film or layer exhibits better superconductivity performance, which attract much interest in its fundamental research as well as potential application. In present work, transition from insulator to superconductor and significant enhancement of superconductivity were achieved in the high quality (00l) oriented FeSe films via controlling the thickness as well as the Fe/Se ratio. The highest Tc up to 15.2 K (almost 2 times higher than those of bulk crystals) and Hc2 up to 35.5 T are obtained in our atmosphere-stable FeSe thin film with practical thickness…
The significant role of interfacial coupling on the superconductivity enhancement in FeSe films on SrTiO3 has been widely recognized. But the explicit origination of this coupling is yet to be identified. Here by surface phonon measurements using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, we found electric field generated by Fuchs-Kliewer (F-K) phonon modes of SrTiO3 can penetrate into FeSe films and strongly interact with electrons therein. The mode-specific electron-phonon coupling (EPC) constant for the ~92 meV F-K phonon is ~0.25 in the single-layer FeSe on SrTiO3. With increasing …
The cuprates and iron-based high-temperature superconductors share many common features: layered strongly anisotropic crystal structure, strong electronic correlations, interplay between different types of electronic ordering, the intrinsic spatial inhomogeneity due to doping. The understanding of complex interplay between these factors is crucial for a directed search of new high-temperature superconductors. Here we show the appearance of inhomogeneous gossamer superconductivity in bulk FeSe compound at ambient pressure and at temperature 5 times higher than its zero-resistance $T_c$. This di…
Single-layer FeSe film on SrTiO3(001) was recently found to be the champion of interfacial superconducting systems, with a much enhanced superconductivity than the bulk iron-based superconductors. Its superconducting mechanism is of great interest. Although the film has a simple Fermi surface topology, its pairing symmetry is unsettled. Here by using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we systematically investigated the superconductivity of single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3(001) films. We observed fully gapped tunneling spectrum and magnetic vortex lattice in the film. Quasi-particle i…
Iron selenide (FeSex) crystals with lateral dimensions up to millimeters were grown via a vapor self-transport method. The crystals consist of the dominant alpha - phase with trace amounts of beta- phase as identified by powder x-ray diffraction. With four-probe resistance measurements we obtained a zero-resistance critical temperature of 7.5 K and a superconducting onset transition temperature of up to 11.8 K in zero magnetic field as well as an anisotropy of 1.5 +- 0.1 for the critical field. Magnetization measurements on individual crystals reveal the co-existence of superconductivity and f…
Heterostructure based interface engineering has been proved an effective method for finding new superconducting systems and raising superconductivity transition temperature (TC). In previous work on one unit-cell (UC) thick FeSe films on SrTiO3 (STO) substrate, a superconducting-like energy gap as large as 20 meV, was revealed by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) further revealed a nearly isotropic gap of above 15 meV, which closes at a temperature of ~ 65 K. If this transition is indeed the superconducting transitio…
The importance of electron-hole interband interactions is widely acknowledged for iron-pnictide superconductors with high transition temperatures (Tc). However, high-Tc superconductivity without hole carriers has been suggested in FeSe single-layer films and intercalated iron-selenides, raising a fundamental question whether iron pnictides and chalcogenides have different pairing mechanisms. Here, we study the properties of electronic structure in the high-Tc phase induced by pressure in bulk FeSe from magneto-transport measurements and first-principles calculations. With increasing pressure, …
Tetragonal beta-FeSe obtained by hydrothermal reaction is not superconducting and transforms to a triclinic structure at 60 K unlike superconducting FeSe from solid state synthesis, which becomes orthorhombic at 90 K. In contrast, tetragonal iron sulphide FeS from hydrothermal synthesis is superconducting at 4.8 K but undergoes no structural transition. Our results suggest that the absence of superconductivity in hydrothermally synthesized FeSe may be associated to the low-temperature structure with zigzag chains of iron atoms, which is different from the known orthorhombic Cmme structure of s…
Polycrystalline sample FeSe was synthesized by a self-flux solution method which shows a zero resistance temperature up to 10.9 K and a Tconset (90% \rhon, \rhon: normal state resistivity) up to 13.3 K. The decrease of superconducting transition temperature by heat treatment indicates that internal crystallographic strain which plays the same effect as external pressure is the origin of its high Tc. The fluctuation conductivity was studied which could be well described by 3D Aslamazov-Larkin (AL) power law. The estimated value of coherence length \xic=9.2 Åis larger than the distance between c…
Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy are employed to investigate twin boundaries in stoichiometric FeSe films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Twin boundaries can be unambiguously identified by imaging the 90° change in the orientation of local electronic dimers from Fe site impurities on either side. Twin boundaries run at approximately 45° to the Fe-Fe bond directions, and noticeably suppress the superconducting gap, in contrast with the recent experimental and theoretical findings in other iron pnictides. Furthermore, vortices appear to accumulate on twin boundarie…
Superconducting FeSe single crystals of (001) orientation are synthesized via a hydrothermal ion-release route. An Ising spin-nematic order is identified by our systematic measurements of in-plane angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) and static magnetization. The turn-on temperature of anisotropic AMR signifies the Ising spin-nematic ordering temperature Tsn, below which a two-fold rotational symmetry is observed in the iron plane. A downward curvature appears below Tsn in the temperature dependence of static magnetization for the weak in-plane magnetic field as reported previously. Remar…
This review discusses the main experiments and theoretical views related to observation of high-temperature superconductivity in intercalated FeSe compounds and single layer films of FeSe on substrates like SrTiO_3. We consider in detail the electronic structure of these systems, both theoretical calculations of this structure at hand and their correspondence with ARPES experiments. It is stressed that electronic spectrum of these systems is qualitatively different from typical picture of the spectrum in well studied FeAs superconductors and the related problems of theoretical description of s…
The in-plane magnetic penetration depth λ_{ab} of the iron selenide superconductor with the nominal composition FeSe_0.85 was studied by means of muon-spin rotation. The measurements of λ_{ab}^{-2}(T) are inconsistent with the presence of nodes in the gap as well as with a simple isotropic s-wave type of the order parameter, but can be equally well described within a two-gap (s+s) and an anisotropic s-wave gap picture. This implies that the superconducting energy gap in FeSe_0.85 contains no nodes.
Superconductivity under pressure in FeSe ($T_{\rm c}$$\sim$7.5 K) has been investigated using single-crystal specimens through the measurements of DC magnetization and electrical resistivity. A characteristic three-step increase in $T_{\rm c}$ has been found under hydrostatic pressure up to $\sim$34 K above 7 GPa. The structural transition from a tetragonal phase to an orthorhombic phase ($T_{\rm s}$$\sim$87 K) is found to disappear at $P$$\sim$2.3 GPa, above which $T_{\rm c}$ increases rapidly, suggesting that the superconductivity is enhanced by the tetragonal environment. Under non-hydrosta…
A number of recent experiments indicate that the iron-chalcogenide FeSe provides the long-sought possibility to study bulk superconductivity in the cross-over regime between the weakly coupled Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) pairing and the strongly coupled Bose--Einstein condensation (BEC). We report on $^{77}$Se nuclear magnetic resonance experiments of FeSe, focused on the superconducting phase for strong magnetic fields applied along the $c$ axis, where a distinct state with large spin polarization was reported. We determine this high-field state as bulk superconducting with high spatial…
We report density functional calculations of the electronic structure, Fermi surface, phonon spectrum, magnetism and electron-phonon coupling for the superconducting phase FeSe, as well as the related compounds FeS and FeTe. We find that the Fermi surface structure of these compounds is very similar to that of the Fe-As based superconductors, with cylindrical electron sections at the zone corner, cylindrical hole surface sections, and depending on the compound, other small hole sections at the zone center. As in the Fe-As based materials, these surfaces are separated by a 2D nesting vector at …
Alkali-metal (potassium) adsorption on FeSe thin films with thickness from two unit cells (UC) to 4-UC on SrTiO3 grown by molecular beam epitaxy is investigated with a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. At appropriate potassium coverage (0.2-0.3 monolayer), the tunneling spectra of the films all exhibit a superconducting-like gap larger than 11 meV (five times the gap value of bulk FeSe), and two distinct features of characteristic phonon modes at 11 meV and 21 meV. The results reveal the critical role of the interface enhanced electron-phonon coupling for possible high temperature…
The recent study of $^{77}$Se nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in a $β$-FeSe single crystal proposed that ferro-orbital order breaks the $90^\circ$ $C_4$ rotational symmetry, driving nematic ordering. Here, we report an NMR study of the impact of small strains generated by gluing on nematic state and spin fluctuations. We observe that the local strains strongly affect the nematic transition, considerably enhancing its onset temperature. On the contrary, no effect on low-energy spin fluctuations was found. Furthermore we investigate the interplay of the nematic phase and superconductivity. Our …
Monolayer FeSe exhibits the highest transition temperature among the iron based superconductors and appears to be fully gapped, seemingly consistent with $s$-wave superconductivity. Here, we develop a theory for the superconductivity based on coupling to fluctuations of checkerboard magnetic order (which has the same translation symmetry as the lattice). The electronic states are described by a symmetry based ${\bf k}\cdot {\bf p}$-like theory and naturally account for the states observed by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that a prediction of this theory is that the resulta…
We present a novel method for embedding spin and charge fluctuations in an anisotropic, multi-band and full-bandwidth Eliashberg treatment of superconductivity. Our analytical framework, based on the random phase approximation, allows for a selfconsistent calculation of material specific characteristics in the interacting, and more specifically, the superconducting state. We apply this approach to bulk FeSe as representative for the iron-based superconductors and successfully solve for the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, the gap symmetry and the gap magnitude. We obtain $T_c \app…
We investigate the effects of electron-phonon coupling, as well as of spin and charge fluctuations on the superconducting state in a single layer of FeSe on SrTiO$_3$ substrate. These three bosonic mediators of Cooper pairing are treated on equal footing in a multichannel, full-bandwidth, multiband, and anisotropic Eliashberg theory of the interacting state. Our self-consistent calculations show that an s-wave symmetry of the superconducting gap is compatible only with a complete absence of spin fluctuations. When spin fluctuations are present, the sign-changing nodeless d-wave pairing symmetr…
It was observed recently (K. Shigekawa et al, PNAS 116, 2470 (2019)) that while monolayer iron chalcigenide FeSe on SrTiO3 (STO) substrate has a very high critical temperature, its chemical and structural "twin" material FeS=STO has a very low Tc if any. To explain this the substrate interfacial phonon model of superconductivity in iron chalcogenides is further developed. The main glue is the oxygen ion (60mev) vibrations longitudinal optical (LO) mode. The mode propagates mainly in the TiO2 layer adjacent to the monolayer (and genrally present also in similar highly polarized ionic crystals l…
Bulk FeSe becomes superconducting below 9\,K, but the critical temperature (T$_{c}$) is enhanced almost universally by a factor of $\sim$4-5 when it is intercalated with alkali elements. How intercalation modifies the structure is known from in-situ X-ray and neutron scattering techniques, but why T$_{c}$ changes so dramatically is not known. Here we show that there is one-to-one correspondence between the enhancement in magnetic instabilities at certain $\bf q$ vectors and superconducting pairing vertex, even while the nuclear spin relaxation rate ${1}/{(T_{1}T)}$ may not reflect this enhance…
