We give a simple proof of the fact that there exist measures on the real line of discrete support, whose Fourier Transform is also a measure of discrete support, yet this Fourier pair cannot be constructed by repeatedly applying the Poisson Summation Formula finitely many times. More specifically the support of both the measure and its Fourier Tranform are not contained in a finite union of arithmetic progressions.
In the paper we study the multipliers of Fourier series in polynomials orthogonal in continuous-discrete Sobolev's spaces. Multiplier Theorem for Fourier-Sobolev series is obtained. This result is based on the representation of the Fejér kernel, on the construction of the "humpbacked majorant" and weighted estimates of maximal functions.
The discrete counterpart of the problem related to the convergence of the Fourier-Jacobi series is studied. To this end, given a sequence, we construct the analogue of the partial sum operator related to Jacobi polynomials and characterize its convergence in the $\ell^p(\mathbb{N})$-norm.
We improve the exponent for the discrete Fourier restriction to the $n$ dimensional sphere, from $p=\frac{2(n+1)}{n-3}$ to $p=\frac{2n}{n-3}$, when $n\ge 4$.
Discrete analogs of the classical Fourier-Jacobi transform are introduced and investigated. It involves series and integrals with respect to parameters of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1(a+in/2,a-in/2;\ c; -x^2 ), \ x >0, n \in \mathbb{N}, a,c > 0, i $ is the imaginary unit. The corresponding inversion formulas for suitable functions and sequences in terms of these series and integrals are established.
The search for a canonical set of eigenvectors of the discrete Fourier transform has been ongoing for more than three decades. The goal is to find an orthogonal basis of eigenvectors which would approximate Hermite functions -- the eigenfunctions of the continuous Fourier transform. This eigenbasis should also have some degree of analytical tractability and should allow for efficient numerical computations. In this paper we provide a partial solution to these problems. First, we construct an explicit basis of (non-orthogonal) eigenvectors of the discrete Fourier transform, thus extending the r…
Consider the group ${\mathbb{R}}^2$ with the discrete topology, and denote its Fourier algebra by $A({\mathbb{R}_{\rm d}^2})$. We reformulate a theorem of V.A. Yudin as a statement about restrictions of functions in $A({\mathbb{R}_{\rm d}^2})$ to the boundary of a strictly convex domain when those functions vanish outside that boundary. We give visual proofs of that statement and a complementary one.
There exist many ways to build an orthonormal basis of $\mathbb{R}^N$, consisting of the eigenvectors of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT). In this paper we show that there is only one such orthonormal eigenbasis of the DFT that is optimal in the sense of an appropriate uncertainty principle. Moreover, we show that these optimal eigenvectors of the DFT are direct analogues of the Hermite functions, that they also satisfy a three-term recurrence relation and that they converge to Hermite functions as $N$ increases to infinity.
We improve the range for the discrete Fourier restriction to the four and five dimensional spheres. We rely on two new ingredients, incidence theory and Siegel's mass formula.
In this paper, we present a different proof on the discrete Fourier restriction. The proof recovers Bourgain's level set result on Strichartz estimates associated with Schrödinger equations on torus. Some sharp estimates on $L^{\frac{2(d+2)}{d}}$ norm of certain exponential sums in higher dimensional cases are established. As an application, we show that some discrete multilinear maximal functions are bounded on $L^2(\mathbb Z)$.
In this paper, we consider a discrete restriction associated with KdV equations. Some new Strichartz estimates are obtained. We also establish the local well-posedness for the periodic generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation with nonlinear term $ F(u)\p_x u$ provided $F\in C^5$ and the initial data $ϕ\in H^s$ with $s>1/2$.
We prove that a positive-definite measure in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with uniformly discrete support and discrete closed spectrum, is representable as a finite linear combination of Dirac combs, translated and modulated. This extends our recent results where we proved this under the assumption that also the spectrum is uniformly discrete. As an application we obtain that Hof's quasicrystals with uniformly discrete diffraction spectra must have a periodic diffraction structure.
We inspect the relationship between relative Fourier multipliers on noncommutative Lebesgue-Orlicz spaces of a discrete group and relative Toeplitz-Schur multipliers on Schatten-von-Neumann-Orlicz classes. Four applications are given: lacunary sets; unconditional Schauder bases for the subspace of a Lebesgue space determined by a given spectrum, that is, by a subset of the group; the norm of the Hilbert transform and the Riesz projection on Schatten-von-Neumann classes with exponent a power of 2; the norm of Toeplitz Schur multipliers on Schatten-von-Neumann classes with exponent less than 1.
This paper, in french, gives a new approach to the concept of Maximally Even Sets based on discrete Fourier transform, with several elementary but interesting and previously unpublished results. Maximally Even Sets have been invented by musicologists but have been found to bear deep relationships to other areas of science, such as the Ising model in Physics. They describe economically and characterise many famous 'scales' or subsets of the cyclic group as modelised here.
We study mapping properties of operators with kernels defined via a combination of continuous and discrete orthogonal polynomials, which provide an abstract formulation of quantum (q-) Fourier type systems. We prove Ismail conjecture regarding the existence of a reproducing kernel structure behind these kernels, by establishing a link with Saitoh theory of linear transformations in Hilbert space. The results are illustrated with Fourier kernels with ultraspherical weights, their continuous q-extensions and generalizations. As a byproduct of this approach, a new class of sampling theorems is ob…
We calculate the norm of the Fourier operator from $L^p(X)$ to $L^q(\hat{X})$ when $X$ is an infinite locally compact abelian group that is, furthermore, compact or discrete. This subsumes the sharp Hausdorff-Young inequality on such groups. In particular, we identify the region in $(p,q)$-space where the norm is infinite, generalizing a result of Fournier, and setting up a contrast with the case of finite abelian groups, where the norm was determined by Gilbert and Rzeszotnik. As an application, uncertainty principles on such groups expressed in terms of Rényi entropies are discussed.
