An understanding of the hydrophobicity of complex heterogeneous molecular assemblies is crucial to characterize and predict interactions between biomolecules. As such, uncovering the subtleties of assembly processes hinges on an accurate classification of the relevant interfaces involved, and much effort has been spent on developing so-called "hydrophobicity maps." In this work, we introduce a novel electrostatics-based mapping of aqueous interfaces that focuses on the collective, long-wavelength electrostatic response of water to the presence of nearby surfaces. In addition to distinguishing between hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions of heterogeneous surfaces, this electrostatic mapping can also differentiate between hydrophilic regions that polarize nearby waters in opposing directions. We therefore expect this approach to find use in predicting the location of possible water-mediated hydrophilic interactions, in addition to the more commonly emphasized hydrophobic interactions that can also be of significant importance.
We address the problem of inverse polymer swelling. This phenomenon, in which a collapsed polymer chain swells upon decreasing temperature, can be observed experimentally in so-called thermoreversible homopolymers in aqueous solution, and is believed to be related to the role of hydrophobicity in protein folding. We consider a lattice-fluid model of water, defined on a body-centered cubic lattice, which has been previously shown to account for most thermodynamic anomalies of water and of hydrophobic solvation for monomeric solutes. We represent the polymer as a self-avoiding walk on the same l…
We theoretically study the size effect of water molecule clusters not only on electrostatic interaction between two charged surfaces in an aqueous electrolyte but also on electroosmotic transport in a nanofluidic channel. Applying a free energy based mean-field approach accounting for different sizes of ions and water molecule clusters, we derive a set of coupled equations to compute electrostatic and electroosmotic properties between charged surfaces. We verify that the smaller the size of a water cluster, the stronger the electroosmotic transport in nanofluidic channels. In addition, we find…
The adsorption kinetics of the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide at the air-water interface has been studied by the maximum bubble pressure method at concentrations below the critical micellar concentration. At short times, the adsorption is diffusion-limited. At longer times, the surface tension shows an intermediate plateau and can no longer be accounted for by a diffusion limited process. Instead, adsorption appears kinetically controlled and slowed down by an adsorption barrier. A Poisson-Boltzmann theory for the electrostatic repulsion from the surface does not fully ac…
We present a study of the solvation properties of model aqueous electrode interfaces. The exposed electrodes we study strongly bind water and have closed packed crystalline surfaces, which template an ordered water adlayer adjacent to the interface. We find that these ordered water structures facilitate collective responses in the presence of solutes that are correlated over large lengthscales and across long timescales. Specifically, we show that the liquid water adjacent to the ordered adlayers forms a soft, liquid-vapor-like interface with concomitant manifestations of hydrophobicity. Tempo…
The Poisson-Boltzmann mean-field description of ionic solutions has been successfully used in predicting charge distributions and interactions between charged macromolecules. While the electrostatic model of charged fluids, on which the Poisson-Boltzmann description rests, and its statistical mechanical consequences have been scrutinized in great detail, much less is understood about its probable shortcomings when dealing with various aspects of real physical, chemical and biological systems. These shortcomings are not only a consequence of the limitations of the mean-field approximation per s…
The study of the modification of interfacial properties between an organic solvent and aqueous electrolyte solutions is presented by using electrostatic Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) simulations. In this article the parametrization for the DPD repulsive parameters aij for the electrolyte components is calculated considering the dependence of the Flory-Huggins \c{hi} parameter on the concentration and the kind of electrolyte added, by means of the activity coefficients. In turn, experimental data was used to obtain the activity coefficients of the electrolytes as a function of their conce…
We theoretically investigate electrostatic properties between two charged surfaces with a grafted polyelectrolyte layer in an aqueous electrolyte solution by using the Poisson-Boltzmann approach accounting for ion partitioning. In order to consider the ion partitioning effect, we focus on changes of electrostatic properties due to the difference in dielectric permittivity of the polyelectrolyte layer and the aqueous electrolyte solution. We find that ion partitioning enhances electrostatic potential in the region between two charged soft surfaces and hence increases the electrostatic interacti…
We briefly review the effects of selective solvation of ions in aqueous mixtures, where the ion densities and the composition fluctuations are strongly coupled. We then examine the surface tension γof a liquid-liquid interface in the presence of ions. We show that γcan be decreased drastically due to the electrostatic and solvation interactions near the interface. We calculate how the free energy is changed due to small surface undulations in the presence of an electric double layer. A surface instability occurs for negative γ, which can easily be realized for antagonistic ion pairs near the s…
The interaction between water and ions within droplets plays a key role in the chemical reactivity of atmospheric and man-made aerosols. Here we report direct computational evidence that in supercooled aqueous nanodroplets a lower density core of tetrahedrally coordinated water expels the cosmotropic ions to the denser and more disordered subsurface. In contrast, at room temperature, depending on the nature of the ion the radial distribution in the droplet core is nearly uniform or elevated towards the center. We analyze the spatial distribution of a single ion in terms of a reference electros…
Molecular dynamics simulations of aqueous electrolytes generally rely on empirical force fields, combining dispersion interactions - described by a truncated Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential - and electrostatic interactions - described by a Coulomb potential computed with a long-range solver. Recently, force fields using rescaled ionic charges (electronic continuum correction, ECC), possibly complemented with rescaling of LJ parameters (electronic continuum correction rescaled, ECCR), have shown promising results in bulk, but their performance at interfaces has been less explored. Here we started …
The results of x-ray reflectivity studies of two oil/water (liquid/liquid) interfaces are inconsistent with recent predictions of the presence of a vapor-like depletion region at hydrophobic/aqueous interfaces. One of the oils, perfluorohexane, is a fluorocarbon whose super-hydrophobic interface with water provides a stringent test for the presence of a depletion layer. The other oil, heptane, is a hydrocarbon and, therefore, is more relevant to the study of biomolecular hydrophobicity. These results are consistent with the sub-angstrom proximity of water to soft hydrophobic materials.
Electrostatic forces between small groups of colloidal particles are measured using blinking optical tweezers. When the electrostatic screening length is significantly larger than the particle radius, forces are found to be non-pairwise additive. Both pair and multi-particle forces are well described by the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation with constant potential boundary conditions. These findings may play an important role in understanding the structure and stability of a wide variety of systems, from micron-sized particles in oil to aqueous nanocolloids.
Near-critical binary mixtures containing ions and confined between two charged and selective surfaces are studied within a Landau-Ginzburg theory extended to include electrostatic interactions. Charge density profiles and the effective interactions between the confining surfaces are calculated in the case of chemical preference of ions for one of the solvent components. Close to the consolute point of the binary solvent, the preferential solubility of ions leads to the modification of the charge density profiles in respect to the ones obtained from the Debye-Hückel theory. As a result, the ele…
We study, using Density Functional theory and Monte Carlo simulations, aqueous electrolyte solutions between charged infinite planar surfaces, in a contact with a bulk salt reservoir. In agreement with recent experimental observations [Z. Luo et al., Nat. Comm. 6, 6358 (2015)], we find that the confined electrolyte lacks local charge neutrality. We show that a Density Functional Theory (DFT) based on a bulk- HNC expansion properly accounts for strong electrostatic correlations and allows us to accurately calculate the ionic density profiles between the charged surfaces, even for electrolytes c…
The uptake and sorption of charged molecules by responsive polymer membranes and hydrogels in aqueous solutions is of key importance for the development of soft functional materials. Here we investigate the partitioning of simple monoatomic (Na$^+$, K$^+$, Cs$^+$, Cl$^-$, I$^-$) and one molecular ion (4-nitrophenolate; NP$^-$) within a dense, electroneutral poly($N$-isopropylacrylamide) membrane using explicit-water molecular dynamics simulations. Inside the predominantly hydrophobic environment water distributes in a network of polydisperse water nanoclusters. The average cluster size determi…
While the important role of electrostatic interactions in aqueous colloidal suspensions is widely known and reasonably well-understood, the relevance of charge in nonpolar suspensions remains mysterious. We demonstrate that particles can have surprisingly strong electrostatic interactions in low dielectric constant environments when ions are solubilized by reverse micelles. A simple thermodynamic model, relating the structure of the micelles to the equilibrium ionic strength, is in good agreement with both conductivity and interaction measurements. Since dissociated ions are solubilized by rev…
We calculate the ion and composition distributions around colloid particles in an aqueous mixture, accounting for preferential adsorption, electrostatic interaction, selective solvation among ions and polar molecules, and composition-dependent ionization. On the colloid surface, we predict a precipitation transition induced by strong preference of hydrophilic ions to water and a prewetting transition between weak and strong adsorption and ionization. These transition lines extend far from the solvent coexistence curve in the plane of the interaction parameter χ(or the temperature) and the aver…
According to classical electrolyte theories interactions in dilute (low ion density) electrolytes decay exponentially with distance, with the Debye screening length the characteristic length-scale. This decay length decreases monotonically with increasing ion concentration, due to effective screening of charges over short distances. Thus within the Debye model no long-range forces are expected in concentrated electrolytes. Here we reveal, using experimental detection of the interaction between two planar charged surfaces across a wide range of electrolytes, that beyond the dilute (Debye-Huucke…
Over the past few decades the experimental literature has consistently reported observations of attraction between like-charged colloidal particles and macromolecules in solution. Examples include nucleic acids and colloidal particles in bulk solution and under confinement, and biological liquid-liquid phase separation. This observation is at odds with the intuitive expectation of an interparticle repulsion that decays monotonically with distance. Although attraction between like-charged particles can be theoretically rationalised in the strong-coupling regime, for example, in the presence of …
We consider the electrostatic interaction between two rigid membranes, with different surface charge densities of opposite sign, across an aqueous solution without added salt. Exact solutions to the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation are obtained and their physical meaning discussed. We also calculate the electrostatic contribution to the free energy and discuss the renormalization of the area per head group of the charged lipids arising from the Coulomb interaction.
On the analogy between the restricted primitive model and capacitor circuits. Part II: A generalized Gibbs-Duhem consistent extension of the Pitzer-Debye-Hückel term with corrections for low and variable relative permittivity
We present theoretical work in which the degree of electrostatic coupling across a charged lipid bilayer in aqueous solution is analyzed on the basis of nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann theory. In particular, we consider the electrostatic interaction of a single, large macroion with the two apposed leaflets of an oppositely charged lipid bilayer where the macroion is allowed to optimize its distance to the membrane. Three regimes are identified: a weak and a high macroion charge regime, separated by a regime of close macroion-membrane contact for intermediate charge densities. The corresponding fre…
Recent experiments and a series of subsequent theoretical studies suggest the occurrence of universal underscreening in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions. We performed a set of systematic Atomic Force Spectroscopy measurements for aqueous salt solutions in a concentration range from 1 mM to 5 M using chloride salts of various alkali metals as well as mixed concentrated salt solutions (involving both mono- and divalent cations and anions), that mimic concentrated brines typically encountered in geological formations. Experiments were carried out using flat substrates and submicrometer-s…
The structure of polyelectrolytes is highly sensitive to small changes in the interactions between its monomers. In particular, interactions mediated by counterions play a significant role, and are affected by both specific molecular effects and generic concentration effects. The ability of coarse-grained models to reproduce the structural properties of an atomic model is thus a challenging task. Our present study compares the ability of different kinds of coarse-grained models: (i)~to reproduce the structure of an atomistic model of a polyelectrolyte (the sodium polyacrylate), (ii)~to reprodu…
While the surface charge of solid particles is a direct consequence of their synthesis, the one of suspended oil drops depends on the adsorption equilibrium of the surrounding molecules. The presence of salt raises the polarity of the water phase, favoring the salting out of the surfactant from the aqueous solution and increasing its surface excess. Yet, the electrolyte also screens the resulting surface charge of the drops [Debye-Hückel, 1923]. As a result, the electrostatic surface potential increases with the ionic strength until the saturation of the interface and then decreases. This beha…
We study the effective interaction mediated by strongly coupled Coulomb fluids between dielectric surfaces carrying quenched, random monopolar charges with equal mean and variance, both when the Coulomb fluid consists only of mobile multivalent counterions and when it consists of an asymmetric ionic mixture containing multivalent and monovalent (salt) ions in equilibrium with an aqueous bulk reservoir. We analyze the consequences that follow from the interplay between surface charge disorder, dielectric and salt image effects, and the strong electrostatic coupling that results from multivalent…
Electrostatic correlations play a fundamental role in aqueous solutions. In this letter, we identify transverse and lateral correlations as two mutually exclusive regimes. We show that the transverse regime leads to binding by generalization of Bjerrum pair formation theory, yielding binding constants from first-principle statistical-mechanical calculations. We compare our theoretical predictions with experiments on charged membranes and Langmuir monolayers and find good agreement. We contrast our approach with existing theories in the strong-coupling limit and on charged modulated interfaces,…
We compute ionic free energy adsorption profiles at aqueous graphene interface by developing a self-consistent approach. To do so, we design a microscopic model for water and put the liquid on an equal footing with the graphene described by its electronic band structure. By evaluating progressively the electronic/dipolar coupled electrostatic interactions, we show that the coupling level including mutual graphene/water screening permits to recover remarkably the precision of extensive quantum simulations. We further derive the potential of mean force evolution of several alkali cations.
Recently, Maassen et al. measured an appreciable pH difference between the bulk solution and the solution in the lumen of virus-like particles, self-assembled in an aqueous buffer solution containing the coat proteins of a simple plant virus and polyanions. [Maassen, S. J.; et al. Small 2018, 14, 1802081] They attribute this to the Donnan effect, caused by an imbalance between the number of negative charges on the encapsulated polyelectrolyte molecules and the number of positive charges on the RNA binding domains of the coat proteins that make up the virus shell or capsid. By applying Poisson-…
We show that hydrophilic ions present in a confined, near-critical aqueous mixture can lead to an attraction between like charge surfaces with opposing preferential adsorption of the two species of the mixture, even though the corresponding Casimir potential in uncharged systems is repulsive. This prediction agrees with recent experiment [Nellen {\it{et al.}}, Soft Matter{\bf{80}}, 061143 (2011)]. We also show that oppositely charged hydrophobic surfaces can repel each other, although the Casimir potential between uncharged surfaces with like preferential adsorption (selectivity) is attractive…
We calculate the interaction potential between two colloids immersed in an aqueous mixture containing salt near or above the critical temperature. We find an attractive interaction far from the coexistence curve due to the combination of preferential solvent adsorption at the colloids' surface and preferential ion solvation. We show that the ion-specific interaction strongly depends on the amount of salt added as well as on the mixture composition. Our results are in accord with recent experiments. For a highly antagonistic salt of hydrophilic anions and hydrophobic cations, a repulsive intera…
Responsive foams and interfaces, are interesting for active materials that respond to external stimuli. We have used the photochromic reaction of a spiropyran surfactant to render interfacial, rising bubble as well as foaming properties active to light stimuli. In order to address the air-water interface, we have applied sum-frequency generation (SFG) which has provided qualitative information on the surface excess and the interfacial charging state as a function of light irradiation and pH. Under blue light, the surfactant forms a closed ring spiro form (SP), whereas under dark conditions the…
Endeavoring toward a transferable, predictive coarse-grained explicit-chain model for biomolecular condensates underlain by liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS), we conducted multiple-chain simulations of the N-terminal intrinsically disordered region (IDR) of DEAD-box helicase Ddx4, as a test case, to assess the roles of electrostatic, hydrophobic, cation-$π$, and aromatic interactions in amino acid sequence-dependent LLPS. We evaluated 3 residue-residue interaction schemes with a shared electrostatic potential. Neither a common hydrophobicity scheme nor one augmented with arginine/lysine-ar…

Clays control carbon, water and nutrient transport in the lithosphere, promote cloud formation5 and lubricate fault slip through interactions among hydrated mineral interfaces. Clay mineral properties are difficult to model because their structures are disordered, curved and dynamic. Consequently, interactions at the clay mineral-aqueous interface have been approximated using electric double layer models based on single crystals of mica and atomistic simulations. We discover that waves of complexation dipoles at dynamically curving interfaces create an emergent long-range force that drives exf…
The aggregation of clay particles in aqueous solution is a ubiquitous everyday process of broad environmental and technological importance. However, it is poorly understood at the all-important atomistic level since it depends on a complex and dynamic interplay of solvent-mediated electrostatic, hydrogen-bonding, and dispersion interactions. With this in mind we have performed an extensive set of classical molecular dynamics simulations (included enhanced sampling simulations) on the interactions between model kaolinite nanoparticles in pure and salty water. Our simulations reveal highly aniso…
We investigate the formation/re-dissociation mechanisms of hybrid complexes made from negatively charged PAA2k coated γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NP) and positively charged polycations (PDADMAC) in aqueous solution in the regime of very high ionic strength (I). When the building blocks are mixed at large ionic strength (1M NH4Cl), the electrostatic interaction is screened and complexation does not occur. If the ionic strength is then lowered down to a targeted ionic strength Itarget, there is a critical threshold Ic = 0.62 M at which complexation occurs, that is independent on the charge ratio Z an…
The role of electrostatics on the interfacial properties of polyelectrolyte microgels has been discussed controversially in the literature. It is not yet clear if, or how, Coulomb interactions affect their behavior under interfacial confinement. In this work, we combine compression isotherms, atomic force microscopy imaging, and computer simulations to further investigate the behavior of pH-responsive microgels at oil-water interfaces. At low compression, charged microgels can be compressed more than uncharged microgels. The in-plane effective area of charged microgels is found to be smaller i…
Ion specificity and related Hofmeister effects, ubiquitous in aqueous systems, can have spectacular consequences in hydrated clays, where ion-specific nanoscale surface forces can determine large scale cohesive, swelling and shrinkage behaviors of soil and sediments. We have used a semi-atomistic computational approach and examined sodium, calcium and aluminum counterions confined with water between charged surfaces representative of clay materials, to show that ion-water structuring in nanoscale confinement is at the origin of surface forces between clay particles which are intrinsically ion-…
The forces between colloidal particles at a decane-water interface, in the presence of low concentrations of a monovalent salt (NaCl) and of the surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) in the aqueous subphase, have been studied using laser tweezers. In the absence of electrolyte and surfactant, particle interactions exhibit a long-range repulsion, yet the variation of the interaction for different particle pairs is found to be considerable. Averaging over several particle pairs was hence found to be necessary to obtain reliable assessment of the effects of salt and surfactant. It has previously…
Massively-parallel molecular dynamics simulation is applied to systems containing electrolytes, vapour-liquid interfaces, and biomolecules in contact with water-oil interfaces. Novel molecular models of alkali halide salts are presented and employed for the simulation of electrolytes in aqueous solution. The enzymatically catalysed hydroxylation of oleic acid is investigated by molecular dynamics simulation taking the internal degrees of freedom of the macromolecules into account. Thereby, Ewald summation methods are used to compute the long range electrostatic interactions. In systems with a …
Binding and phase behavior of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and surfactants were studied in aqueous bulk solutions and at air-water interfaces. In particular, we have investigated the polyanion poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (NaPSS) and the cationic surfactants dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C$_{12}$TAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C$_{14}$TAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C$_{16}$TAB). In order to reveal surfactant/polyelectrolyte binding, aggregation and phase separation of the mixtures, we have varied the NaPSS concentration systematically and have kept the surfac…
