The aggregation of clay particles in aqueous solution is a ubiquitous everyday process of broad environmental and technological importance. However, it is poorly understood at the all-important atomistic level since it depends on a complex and dynamic interplay of solvent-mediated electrostatic, hydrogen-bonding, and dispersion interactions. With this in mind we have performed an extensive set of classical molecular dynamics simulations (included enhanced sampling simulations) on the interactions between model kaolinite nanoparticles in pure and salty water. Our simulations reveal highly anisotropic behaviour in which the interaction between the nanoparticles varies from attractive to repulsive depending on the relative orientation of the nanoparticles. Detailed analysis reveals that at large separation (>1.5 nm) this interaction is dominated by electrostatic effects whereas at smaller separations the nature of the water hydration structure becomes critical. This study highlights an incredible richness in how clay nanoparticles interact, which should be accounted for in e.g. coarse grained models of clay nanoparticle aggregation.
We investigate the modification of gas phase ion polarizabilities upon solvation in polar solvents and ionic liquids. To this aim, we develop a classical electrostatic theory of charged liquids composed of solvent molecules modeled as finite size dipoles, and embedding polarizable ions that consist of Drude oscillators. In qualitative agreement with ab-initio calculations of polar solvents and ionic liquids, the hydration energy of a polarizable ion in both type of dielectric liquid is shown to favor the expansion of its electronic cloud. Namely, the ion carrying no dipole moment in the gas ph…
We use molecular dynamics simulations to probe hydration, ion spacing, and cation-anion interaction in two sulfonated polysulfones with different ion distributions along the polymer backbone. At room temperature, these polymers remain in a glassy state even with water contents more than 10%. At the equilibrium water uptake, the ions exhibit a similar level of hydration as they would in their saturated aqueous solution. The framework of Manning's limiting law for counterion condensation is used to examine ionic interactions in the simulated polysulfones. The dielectric constant that the ions ex…
We have studied the ionic conductivity and the dipolar reorientational dynamics of aqueous solutions of a prototypical deep eutectic solvent (DES), ethaline, by using dielectric spectroscopy on a broad range of frequency (MHz-Hz) and for temperatures ranging from 128 to 283 K. The fraction of water in the DES was varied systematically to cover different regimes, starting from pure DES and its water-in-DES mixtures to the diluted electrolyte solutions. Depending on these parameters, different physical states were examined, including low viscosity liquid, supercooled viscous liquid, amorphous so…
Ion specificity and related Hofmeister effects, ubiquitous in aqueous systems, can have spectacular consequences in hydrated clays, where ion-specific nanoscale surface forces can determine large scale cohesive, swelling and shrinkage behaviors of soil and sediments. We have used a semi-atomistic computational approach and examined sodium, calcium and aluminum counterions confined with water between charged surfaces representative of clay materials, to show that ion-water structuring in nanoscale confinement is at the origin of surface forces between clay particles which are intrinsically ion-…
Clays control carbon, water and nutrient transport in the lithosphere, promote cloud formation5 and lubricate fault slip through interactions among hydrated mineral interfaces. Clay mineral properties are difficult to model because their structures are disordered, curved and dynamic. Consequently, interactions at the clay mineral-aqueous interface have been approximated using electric double layer models based on single crystals of mica and atomistic simulations. We discover that waves of complexation dipoles at dynamically curving interfaces create an emergent long-range force that drives exf…
To better understand lipid membranes in living organisms, the study of intermolecular forces using the osmotic pressure technique applied to model lipid membranes has constituted the ground knowledge in the field of biophysics since four decades. However, the study of intermolecular forces in lipid systems other than phospholipids, like glycolipids, has gained a certain interest only recently. Even in this case, the work generally focuses on the study of membrane glycolipids, but little is known on new forms of non-membrane functional compounds, like microbial bolaform glycolipids. This works …
We have applied recent machine learning advances, deep convolutional neural network, to three-dimensional (voxels) soft matter data, generated by Molecular Dynamics computer simulation. We have focused on the structural and phase properties of a coarse-grained model of hydrated ionic surfactants. We have trained a classifier able to automatically detect the water quantity absorbed in the system, therefore associating to each hydration level the corresponding most representative nano-structure. Based on the notion of transfer learning, we have next applied the same network to the related polyme…
A model for ionic solutions with an attractive short-range pair interaction between the ions is presented. The short-range interaction is accounted for by adding a quadratic non-local term to the Poisson-Boltzmann free energy. The model is used to study solvent effects in a planar electric double layer. The counter-ion density is found to increase near the charged surface, as compared with the Poisson-Boltzmann theory, and to decrease at larger distances. The ion density profile is studied analytically in the case where the ion distribution near the plate is dominated only by counter-ions. Fur…
We report results of molecular dynamics simulations characterizing the solvation and interaction of small apolar particles such as methane and Xenon in imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs). The simulations are able to reproduce semi-quantitatively the anomalous temperature dependence of the solubility of apolar particles in the infinite dilution regime. We observe that the ``solvophobic solvation'' of small apolar particles in ILs is governed by compensating entropic and enthalpic contributions, very much like the hydrophobic hydration of small apolar particles in liquid water. In addition, o…
We present a continuum theory of electrolytes composed of a waterlike solvent and univalent ions. First, we start with a density functional $\cal F$ for the coarse-grained solvent, cation, and anion densities, including the Debye-Hückel free energy, the Coulombic interaction, and the direct interactions among these three components. These densities fluctuate obeying the distribution $\propto \exp(- {\cal F}/k_BT)$. Eliminating the solvent density deviation in $\cal F$, we obtain the effective non-Coulombic interactions among the ions, which consist of the direct ones and the solvent-mediated o…
Solvation of ions is ubiquitous on our planet. Solvated ions have a profound effect on the behavior of ionic solutions, which is crucial in nature and technology. Experimentally, ions have been classified into "structure makers" or "structure breakers", depending on whether they slow down or accelerate the solution dynamics. Theoretically, the dynamics of ions has been explained by a dielectric friction model combining hydrodynamics and charge-dipole interaction in the continuum description. However, both approaches lack a microscopic structural basis, leaving the microscopic understanding of …
We investigate the individual activity coefficients of pure 1:1 and 2:1 electrolytes using our theory that is based on the competition of ion-ion (II) and ion-water (IW) interactions (Vincze et al., J. Chem. Phys. 133, 154507, 2010). The II term is computed from Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations on the basis of the implicit solvent model of electrolytes using hard sphere ions with Pauling radii. The IW term is computed on the basis of Born's treatment of solvation using experimental hydration free energies. The two terms are coupled through the concentration-dependent dielectric constant…
This work describes the behaviour of water molecules in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid under nanoconfinement between graphene sheets. By means of molecular dynamics simulations, an adsorption of water molecules at the graphene surface is studied. A depletion of water molecules in the vicinity of the neutral and negatively charged graphene surfaces and their adsorption at the positively charged surface are observed in line with the preferential hydration of the ionic liquid anions. The findings are appropriately described using a two-level statistical model. The conf…
The ionic atmospheres around nucleic acids play important roles in biological function. Large-scale explicit solvent simulations coupled to experimental assays such as anomalous small-angle X-ray scattering (ASAXS) can provide important insights into the structure and energetics of such atmospheres but are time- and resource-intensive. In this paper, we use classical density functional theory (cDFT) to explore the balance between ion-DNA, ion-water, and ion-ion interactions in ionic atmospheres of RbCl, SrCl$_2$, and CoHexCl$_3$ (cobalt hexammine chloride) around a B-form DNA molecule. The acc…
Among other improvements, the Martini 3 coarse-grained force field provides a more accurate description of the solvation of protein pockets and channels through the consistent use of various bead types and sizes. Here, we show that the representation of Na$^+$ and Cl$^-$ ions as "tiny" (TQ5) beads limits the accessible time step to 25 fs. By contrast, with Martini 2, time steps of 30-40 fs were possible for lipid bilayer systems without proteins. This limitation is relevant for, e.g., phase separating lipid mixtures that require long equilibration times. We derive a quantitative kinetic model …
Transport properties of concentrated electrolytes have been analyzed using classical molecular dynamics simulations with the algorithms and parameters typical of simulations describing complex electrokinetic phenomena. The electrical conductivity and transport numbers of electrolytes containing monovalent (KCl), divalent (MgCl$_2$), a mixture of both (KCl + MgCl$_2$), and trivalent (LaCl$_3$) cations have been obtained from simulations of the electrolytes in electric fields of different magnitude. The results obtained for different simulation parameters have been discussed and compared with ex…
We use Metropolis Monte Carlo and umbrella sampling to calculate the free energies of interaction of two methane molecules and their charged derivatives in cylindrical water-filled pores. Confinement strongly alters the interactions between the nonpolar solutes, and completely eliminates the solvent separated minimum (SSM) that is seen in bulk water. The free energy profiles show that the methane molecules are either in contact or at separations corresponding to the diameter and the length of the cylindrical pore. Analytic calculations that estimate the entropy of the solutes, which are solvat…
We investigate the dynamics of water confined in soft ionic nano-assemblies, an issue critical for a general understanding of the multi-scale structure-function interplay in advanced materials. We focus in particular on hydrated perfluoro-sulfonic acid compounds employed as electrolytes in fuel cells. These materials form phase-separated morphologies that show outstanding proton-conducting properties, directly related to the state and dynamics of the absorbed water. We have quantified water motion and ion transport by combining Quasi Elastic Neutron Scattering, Pulsed Field Gradient Nuclear Ma…

Fluid-induced alteration of rocks and mineral-based materials often starts at confined mineral interfaces where nm-thick water films can persist even at high overburden pressures and at low vapor pressures. These films enable transport of reactants and affect forces acting between mineral surfaces. However, the feedback between the surface forces and reactivity of confined solids is not fully understood. We used the surface forces apparatus (SFA) to follow surface reactivity in confinement and measure nm-range forces between two rough calcite surfaces in NaCl, CaCl$_2$, or MgCl$_2$ solutions w…
