We present a novel method to infer, in closed-form, a general 3D spatial occupancy and orientation of a collection of rigid objects given 2D image detections from a sequence of images. In particular, starting from 2D ellipses fitted to bounding boxes, this novel multi-view problem can be reformulated as the estimation of a quadric (ellipsoid) in 3D. We show that an efficient solution exists in the dual-space using a minimum of three views while a solution with two views is possible through the use of regularization. However, this algebraic solution can be negatively affected in the presence of gross inaccuracies in the bounding boxes estimation. To this end, we also propose a robust ellipse fitting algorithm able to improve performance in the presence of errors in the detected objects. Results on synthetic tests and on different real datasets, involving real challenging scenarios, demonstrate the applicability and potential of our method.

In this paper, we propose an object-based camera pose estimation from a single RGB image and a pre-built map of objects, represented with ellipsoidal models. We show that contrary to point correspondences, the definition of a cost function characterizing the projection of a 3D object onto a 2D object detection is not straightforward. We develop an ellipse-ellipse cost based on level sets sampling, demonstrate its nice properties for handling partially visible objects and compare its performance with other common metrics. Finally, we show that the use of a predictive uncertainty on the detected…

In this paper, we propose a method for initial camera pose estimation from just a single image which is robust to viewing conditions and does not require a detailed model of the scene. This method meets the growing need of easy deployment of robotics or augmented reality applications in any environments, especially those for which no accurate 3D model nor huge amount of ground truth data are available. It exploits the ability of deep learning techniques to reliably detect objects regardless of viewing conditions. Previous works have also shown that abstracting the geometry of a scene of object…
Over the years many ellipse detection algorithms spring up and are studied broadly, while the critical issue of detecting ellipses accurately and efficiently in real-world images remains a challenge. In this paper, we propose a valuable industry-oriented ellipse detector by arc-support line segments, which simultaneously reaches high detection accuracy and efficiency. To simplify the complicated curves in an image while retaining the general properties including convexity and polarity, the arc-support line segments are extracted, which grounds the successful detection of ellipses. The arc-supp…

Cameras for traffic surveillance are usually pole-mounted and produce images that reflect a birds-eye view. Vehicles in such images, in general, assume an ellipse form. A bounding box for the vehicles usually includes a large empty space when the vehicle orientation is not parallel to the edges of the box. To circumvent this problem, the present study applied bounding ellipses to a non-anchor-based, single-shot detection model (CenterNet). Since this model does not depend on anchor boxes, non-max suppression (NMS) that requires computing the intersection over union (IOU) between predicted boun…
Fast and robust pupil detection is an essential prerequisite for video-based eye-tracking in real-world settings. Several algorithms for image-based pupil detection have been proposed, their applicability is mostly limited to laboratory conditions. In realworld scenarios, automated pupil detection has to face various challenges, such as illumination changes, reflections (on glasses), make-up, non-centered eye recording, and physiological eye characteristics. We propose ElSe, a novel algorithm based on ellipse evaluation of a filtered edge image. We aim at a robust, resource-saving approach tha…
Lesions characterized by computed tomography (CT) scans, are arguably often elliptical objects. However, current lesion detection systems are predominantly adopted from the popular Region Proposal Networks (RPNs) that only propose bounding boxes without fully leveraging the elliptical geometry of lesions. In this paper, we present Gaussian Proposal Networks (GPNs), a novel extension to RPNs, to detect lesion bounding ellipses. Instead of directly regressing the rotation angle of the ellipse as the common practice, GPN represents bounding ellipses as 2D Gaussian distributions on the image plain…

This manuscript provides a collection of new methods for the automated detection of non-overlapping ellipses from edge points. The methods introduce new developments in: (i) robust Monte Carlo-based ellipse fitting to 2-dimensional (2D) points in the presence of outliers; (ii) detection of non-overlapping ellipse from 2D edge points; and (iii) extraction of cylinder from 3D point clouds. The proposed methods were thoroughly compared with established state-of-the-art methods, using simulated and real-world datasets, through the design of four sets of original experiments. It was found that the …

As an important scan plane, four chamber view is routinely performed in both second trimester perinatal screening and fetal echocardiographic examinations. The biometrics in this plane including cardio-thoracic ratio (CTR) and cardiac axis are usually measured by sonographers for diagnosing congenital heart disease. However, due to the commonly existing artifacts like acoustic shadowing, the traditional manual measurements not only suffer from the low efficiency, but also with the inconsistent results depending on the operators' skills. In this paper, we present an anchor-free ellipse detectio…

We propose a new algorithm for real-time detection and tracking of elliptic patterns suitable for real-world robotics applications. The method fits ellipses to each contour in the image frame and rejects ellipses that do not yield a good fit. The resulting detection and tracking method is lightweight enough to be used on robots' resource-limited onboard computers, can deal with lighting variations and detect the pattern even when the view is partial. The method is tested on an example application of an autonomous UAV landing on a fast-moving vehicle to show its performance indoors, outdoors, a…
In conveyor belt sushi restaurants, billing is a burdened job because one has to manually count the number of dishes and identify the color of them to calculate the price. In a busy situation, there can be a mistake that customers are overcharged or under-charged. To deal with this problem, we developed a method that automatically identifies the color of dishes and calculate the total price using real images. Our method consists of ellipse fitting and convol-utional neural network. It achieves ellipse detection precision 85% and recall 96% and classification accuracy 92%.

While general object detection has seen tremendous progress, localization of elliptical objects has received little attention in the literature. Our motivating application is the detection of knots in sawn timber images, which is an important problem since the number and types of knots are visual characteristics that adversely affect the quality of sawn timber. We demonstrate how models can be tailored to the elliptical shape and thereby improve on general purpose detectors; more generally, elliptical defects are common in industrial production, such as enclosed air bubbles when casting glass …
Convolutional neural network (CNN) based architectures, such as Mask R-CNN, constitute the state of the art in object detection and segmentation. Recently, these methods have been extended for model-based segmentation where the network outputs the parameters of a geometric model (e.g. an ellipse) directly. This work considers objects whose three-dimensional models can be represented as ellipsoids. We present a variant of Mask R-CNN for estimating the parameters of ellipsoidal objects by segmenting each object and accurately regressing the parameters of projection ellipses. We show that model r…
Images of heavily occluded objects in cluttered scenes, such as fruit clusters in trees, are hard to segment. To further retrieve the 3D size and 6D pose of each individual object in such cases, bounding boxes are not reliable from multiple views since only a little portion of the object's geometry is captured. We introduce the first CNN-based ellipse detector, called Ellipse R-CNN, to represent and infer occluded objects as ellipses. We first propose a robust and compact ellipse regression based on the Mask R-CNN architecture for elliptical object detection. Our method can infer the parameter…
Despite the attention marker-less pose estimation has attracted in recent years, marker-based approaches still provide unbeatable accuracy under controlled environmental conditions. Thus, they are used in many fields such as robotics or biomedical applications but are primarily implemented through classical approaches, which require lots of heuristics and parameter tuning for reliable performance under different environments. In this work, we propose MarkerPose, a robust, real-time pose estimation system based on a planar target of three circles and a stereo vision system. MarkerPose is meant …
Calibration of devices with different modalities is a key problem in robotic vision. Regular spatial objects, such as planes, are frequently used for this task. This paper deals with the automatic detection of ellipses in camera images, as well as to estimate the 3D position of the spheres corresponding to the detected 2D ellipses. We propose two novel methods to (i) detect an ellipse in camera images and (ii) estimate the spatial location of the corresponding sphere if its size is known. The algorithms are tested both quantitatively and qualitatively. They are applied for calibrating the sens…

Accurate detection of large-scale, elliptical-shape fibers, including their parameters of center, orientation and major/minor axes, on the 2D cross-sectioned image slices is very important for characterizing the underlying cylinder 3D structures in microscopic material images. Detecting fibers in a degraded image poses a challenge to both current fiber detection and ellipse detection methods. This paper proposes a new semi-supervised deep learning method for large-scale elliptical fiber detection with synthetic data, which frees people from heavy data annotations and is robust to various kinds…

Detecting elliptical objects from an image is a central task in robot navigation and industrial diagnosis where the detection time is always a critical issue. Existing methods are hardly applicable to these real-time scenarios of limited hardware resource due to the huge number of fragment candidates (edges or arcs) for fitting ellipse equations. In this paper, we present a fast algorithm detecting ellipses with high accuracy. The algorithm leverage a newly developed projective invariant to significantly prune the undesired candidates and to pick out elliptical ones. The invariant is able to r…
Circular markers are planar markers which offer great performances for detection and pose estimation. For an uncalibrated camera with an unknown focal length, at least the images of at least two coplanar circles are generally required to recover their poses. Unfortunately, detecting more than one ellipse in the image must be tricky and time-consuming, especially regarding concentric circles. On the other hand, when the camera is calibrated, one circle suffices but the solution is twofold and can hardly be disambiguated. Our contribution is to put beyond this limit by dealing with the uncalibra…

In the last decade, the development of technologies and tools for eye tracking has been a constantly growing area. Detecting the center of the pupil, using image processing techniques, has been an essential step in this process. A large number of techniques have been proposed for pupil center detection using both traditional image processing and machine learning-based methods. Despite the large number of methods proposed, no comparative work on their performance was found, using the same images and performance metrics. In this work, we aim at comparing four of the most frequently cited traditi…
Video based fall detection accuracy has been largely improved due to the recent progress on deep convolutional neural networks. However, there still exists some challenges, such as lighting variation, complex background, which degrade the accuracy and generalization ability of these approaches. Meanwhile, large computation cost limits the application of existing fall detection approaches. To alleviate these problems, a video based fall detection approach using human poses is proposed in this paper. First, a lightweight pose estimator extracts 2D poses from video sequences and then 2D poses are…
Facial landmark detection, head pose estimation, and facial deformation analysis are typical facial behavior analysis tasks in computer vision. Following a cascade procedure augmented with model-based head pose estimation, we iteratively update the facial landmark locations, facial o…

For applications in navigation and robotics, estimating the 3D pose of objects is as important as detection. Many approaches to pose estimation rely on detecting or tracking parts or keypoints [11, 21]. In this paper we build on a recent state-of-the-art convolutional network for slidingwindow detection [10] to provide detection and rough pose estimation in a single shot, without intermediate stages of detecting parts or initial bounding boxes. While not the first system to treat pose estimation as a categorization problem, this is the first attempt to combine detection and pose estimation at …

3D object detection and pose estimation from a single image are two inherently ambiguous problems. Oftentimes, objects appear similar from different viewpoints due to shape symmetries, occlusion and repetitive textures. This ambiguity in both detection and pose estimation means that an object instance can be perfectly described by several different poses and even classes. In this work we propose to explicitly deal with this uncertainty. For each object instance we predict multiple pose and class outcomes to estimate the specific pose distribution generated by symmetries and repetitive textures…
Most recent 6D object pose estimation methods first use object detection to obtain 2D bounding boxes before actually regressing the pose. However, the general object detection methods they use are ill-suited to handle cluttered scenes, thus producing poor initialization to the subsequent pose network. To address this, we propose a rigidity-aware detection method exploiting the fact that, in 6D pose estimation, the target objects are rigid. This lets us introduce an approach to sampling positive object regions from the entire visible object area during training, instead of naively drawing sampl…

Bin picking is a core problem in industrial environments and robotics, with its main module as 6D pose estimation. However, industrial depth sensors have a lack of accuracy when it comes to small objects. Therefore, we propose a framework for pose estimation in highly cluttered scenes with small objects, which mainly relies on RGB data and makes use of depth information only for pose refinement. In this work, we compare synthetic data generation approaches for object detection and pose estimation and introduce a pose filtering algorithm that determines the most accurate estimated poses. We wil…
The estimation of the camera poses associated with a set of images commonly relies on feature matches between the images. In contrast, we are the first to address this challenge by using objectness regions to guide the pose estimation problem rather than explicit semantic object detections. We propose Pose Refiner Network (PoserNet) a light-weight Graph Neural Network to refine the approximate pair-wise relative camera poses. PoserNet exploits associations between the objectness regions - concisely expressed as bounding boxes - across multiple views to globally refine sparsely connected view g…

Human-object interaction(HOI) detection is a critical task in scene understanding. The goal is to infer the triplet <subject, predicate, object> in a scene. In this work, we note that the human pose itself as well as the relative spatial information of the human pose with respect to the target object can provide informative cues for HOI detection. We contribute a Pose-based Modular Network (PMN) which explores the absolute pose features and relative spatial pose features to improve HOI detection and is fully compatible with existing networks. Our module consists of a branch that first processe…
We propose a novel 3D human pose detector using two panoramic cameras. We show that transforming fisheye perspectives to rectilinear views allows a direct application of two-dimensional deep-learning pose estimation methods, without the explicit need for a costly re-training step to compensate for fisheye image distortions. By utilizing panoramic cameras, our method is capable of accurately estimating human poses over a large field of view. This renders our method suitable for ergonomic analyses and other pose based assessments.
Rotation augmentations generally improve a model's invariance/equivariance to rotation - except in object detection. In object detection the shape is not known, therefore rotation creates a label ambiguity. We show that the de-facto method for bounding box label rotation, the Largest Box Method, creates very large labels, leading to poor performance and in many cases worse performance than using no rotation at all. We propose a new method of rotation augmentation that can be implemented in a few lines of code. First, we create a differentiable approximation of label accuracy and show that axis…
In this paper, we propose an end-to-end trainable regression approach for human pose estimation from still images. We use the proposed Soft-argmax function to convert feature maps directly to joint coordinates, resulting in a fully differentiable framework. Our method is able to learn heat maps representations indirectly, without additional steps of artificial ground truth generation. Consequently, contextual information can be included to the pose predictions in a seamless way. We evaluated our method on two very challenging datasets, the Leeds Sports Poses (LSP) and the MPII Human Pose datas…
We present a learning-based method for 6 DoF pose estimation of rigid objects in point cloud data. Many recent learning-based approaches use primarily RGB information for detecting objects, in some cases with an added refinement step using depth data. Our method consumes unordered point sets with/without RGB information, from initial detection to the final transformation estimation stage. This allows us to achieve accurate pose estimates, in some cases surpassing state of the art methods trained on the same data.

We propose real-time, six degrees of freedom (6DoF), 3D face pose estimation without face detection or landmark localization. We observe that estimating the 6DoF rigid transformation of a face is a simpler problem than facial landmark detection, often used for 3D face alignment. In addition, 6DoF offers more information than face bounding box labels. We leverage these observations to make multiple contributions: (a) We describe an easily trained, efficient, Faster R-CNN--based model which regresses 6DoF pose for all faces in the photo, without preliminary face detection. (b) We explain how pos…

In this work, we build upon existing methods for occlusion-aware 3D pose detection in videos. To facilitate prediction on poses with occluded joints, we introduce an intuitive generalization of the cylinder man model used to generate occlusion labels. Object detection and pose estimation are difficult tasks in robotics and autonomous driving. Existing object detection and pose estimation methods mostly adopt the same-dimensional data for training. For example, 2D object detection usually requires a large amount of 2D annotation data with high cost. Using high-dimensional information to supervise lower-dimensional tasks is a feasible way to reduce datasets size. In this work, the DR-WLC, a dimensionality reduction cognitive model, which can perform both object detection and pose estimation tasks at the same time is proposed. The model only r…
