We propose a methodology to analyze synchronization in an ensemble of diffusively coupled multistable systems. First, we study how two bidirectionally coupled multistable oscillators synchronize and demonstrate the high complexity of the basins of attraction of coexisting synchronous states. Then, we propose the use of the Master Stability Function (MSF) for multistable systems to describe synchronizability, even during intermittent behaviour, of a network of multistable oscillators, regardless of both the number of coupled oscillators and the interaction structure. In particular, we show that a network of multistable elements is synchronizable for a given range of topology spectra and coupling strengths, irrespective of specific attractor dynamics to which different oscillators are locked, and even in the presence of intermittency. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of the MSF approach with a network of multistable electronic circuits.
Delay time modulation induced oscillating synchronization and intermittent anticipatory/lag and complete synchronizations in time-delay nonlinear dynamical systems
We study collective dynamics of networks of mutually coupled identical Lorenz oscillators near subcritical Hopf bifurcation. This system shows induced multistable behavior with interesting spatio-temporal dynamics including synchronization, desynchronization and chimera states. We find this network may exhibit intermittent behavior due to the complex basin structures, where, temporal dynamics of the oscillators in the ensemble switches between different attractors. Consequently, different oscillators may show dynamics that is intermittently synchronized (or desynchronized), giving rise to {\it…
This work uses the statistical properties of Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponents (FTLEs) to investigate the Intermittent Stickiness Synchronization (ISS) observed in the mixed phase space of high-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Full Stickiness Synchronization (SS) occurs when all FTLEs from a chaotic trajectory tend to zero for arbitrary long time-windows. This behavior is a consequence of the sticky motion close to regular structures which live in the high-dimensional phase space and affects all unstable directions proportionally by the same amount, generating a kind of collective motion. Partial…

Type-I Intermittency With Noise Versus Eyelet Intermittency
Transients are fundamental to ecological systems with significant implications to management, conservation, and biological control. We uncover a type of transient synchronization behavior in spatial ecological networks whose local dynamics are of the chaotic, predator-prey type. In the parameter regime where there is phase synchronization among all the patches, complete synchronization (i.e., synchronization in both phase and amplitude) can arise in certain pairs of patches as determined by the network symmetry - henceforth the phenomenon of "synchronization within synchronization." Distinct p…
Recent research has led to the discovery of fundamental new phenomena in network synchronization, including chimera states, explosive synchronization, and asymmetry-induced synchronization. Each of these phenomena has thus far been observed only in systems designed to exhibit that one phenomenon, which raises the questions of whether they are mutually compatible and, if so, under what conditions they co-occur. Here, we introduce a class of remarkably simple oscillator networks that concurrently exhibit all of these phenomena. The dynamical units consist of pairs of nonidentical phase oscillato…
We propose a coupled system of fast and slow phase oscillators. We observe two-step transitions to quasi-periodic motions by direct numerical simulations of this coupled oscillator system. A low-dimensional equation for order parameters is derived using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz. The applicability of the ansatz is checked by the comparison of numerical results of the coupled oscillator system and the reduced low-dimensional equation. We investigate further several interesting phenomena in which mutual interactions between the fast and slow oscillators play an essential role. Fast oscillations ap…
