Comparative analysis of electric field influence on the quantum wells with different boundary conditions. I. Energy spectrum, quantum information entropy and polarization
Analytical solutions of the Schrödinger equation for the one-dimensional quantum well with all possible permutations of the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions (BCs) in perpendicular to the interfaces uniform electric field $\mathscr{E}$ are used for the comparative investigation of their interaction and its influence on the properties of the system. Limiting cases of the weak and strong voltages allow an easy mathematical treatment and its clear physical explanation; in particular, for the small $\mathscr{E}$, the perturbation theory derives for all geometries a linear dependence of the polarization on the field with the BC-dependent proportionality coefficient being positive (negative) for the ground (excited) states. Simple two-level approximation elementary explains the negative polarizations as a result of the field-induced destructive interference of the unperturbed modes and shows that in this case the admixture of only the neighboring states plays a dominant role. Different magnitudes of the polarization for different BCs in this regime are explained physically and confirmed numerically. Hellmann-Feynman theorem reveals a fundamental relation between the polarization and the speed of the energy change with the field. It is proved that zero-voltage position entropies $S_x$ are BC independent and for all states but the ground Neumann level (which has $S_x=0$) are equal to $\ln2-1$ while the momentum entropies $S_k$ depend on the edge requirements and the level. Varying electric field changes position and momentum entropies in the opposite directions such that the entropic uncertainty relation is satisfied.
We theoretically study the electric polarization in magnetic topological nodal semimetal thin films. In magnetically doped topological insulators, topological nodal semimetal phases emerge once the exchange coupling overcomes the band gap. Changing the magnetization direction, nodal structure is modulated and the system becomes topological nodal point or line semimetals. We find that nodal line semimetals are characterized by non-linear electric polarization, which is not observed in nodal point semimetals. The non-linear response originates from the existence of the surface states. Screening …
We evaluate the spin polarization (Edelstein or inverse spin galvanic effect) and the spin Hall current induced by an applied electric field by including the weak localization corrections for a two-dimensional electron gas. We show that the weak localization effects yield logarithmic corrections to both the spin polarization conductivity relating the spin polarization and the electric field and to the spin Hall angle relating the spin and charge currents. The renormalization of both the spin polarization conductivity and the spin Hall angle combine to produce a zero correction to the total spi…
Electric polarization is a geometric phenomenon in solids and has a close relationship to the symmetry of the system. Here we propose a mechanism to dynamically induce and manipulate electric polarization by using an external light field. Specifically, we show that application of bicircular lights (BCLs) control the rotational symmetry of the system and can generate electric polarization. To this end, we use Floquet theory to study a system subjected to a two-frequency drive. We derive an effective Hamiltonian with high frequency expansions, for which the electric polarization is computed with…
We study theoretically the single-electron triangular zigzag graphene quantum dot in uniform in-plane electric fields. The far-infrared absorption spectra of the dot are calculated by the tight-binding method. The energy spectra and the distribution of wave functions are also presented to analyse the far-infrared spectra. The orthogonal zero-energy eigenstates are arranged along to the direction of the external field. The remarkable result is that all intraband transitions and some interband transitions are forbidden when the absorbed light is polarized along the direction of the electric fiel…
The concept of the Zak phase lies at the core of the modern theory of electric polarization. It is defined using the components of the Bloch wave functions in a certain basis, which is not captured by the standard expression for Berry potential. We provide a consistent geometric interpretation of the Zak phase in terms of projected connections. In the context of Bloch states, we relate the transformation law of projected Berry potential with classical currents that contribute to the time derivative of the electric polarization. This gives a new argument for the Zak phase formula for the electr…
The role of staggered potential on light-induced spin and pseudo-spin polarization has been investigated in silicene. It has been shown that non-equilibrium spin and pseudo-spin polarizations are emerged in silicene sheet by applying an external perpendicular electric field in the presence of circularly polarized light emission. This electric field results in pseudo-spin resolved states very close to the Dirac points therefore could be considered as a pseudomagnetic field. It has been shown that staggered potential induced spin-valley locking and pseudo-spin resolved bands are responsible for …
We study electric polarization and nonlinear optical effects in spin systems with broken inversion symmetry. We apply strong coupling expansion to the underlying electronic Hamiltonians, and systematically derive expressions for electric polarization in spin systems that are represented in terms of spin operators. The magnon representation of the obtained electric polarization operator allows us to compute linear and nonlinear optical responses by the standard diagrammatic method. We apply our formalism to Heisenberg model with alternating coupling constants and $J_1$-$J_2$ model with inversio…
We consider phase separated states in magnetic oxides (MO) thin films. We show that these states have a non-zero electric polarization. Moreover, the polarization is intimately related to a spatial distribution of magnetization in the film. Polarized states with opposite polarization and opposite magnetic configuration are degenerate. An external electric field removes the degeneracy and allows to switch between the two states. So, one can control electric polarization and magnetic configuration of the phase separated MO thin film with the external electric field.
We theoretically show that an interlayer bias voltage in the AB-stacked bilayer graphene nanoribbons with armchair edges induces an electric polarization along the ribbon. Both tight-binding and ab initio calculations consistently indicate that when the bias voltage is weak, the polarization shows opposite signs depending on the ribbon width modulo three. This nontrivial dependence is explained using a two-band effective model. A strong limit of the bias voltage in the tight-binding model shows either one-third or zero polarization, which agrees with topological argument.
We generalize the modern theory of electric polarization to the case of one-dimensional non-Hermitian systems with line-gapped spectrum. In these systems, the electronic position operator is non-Hermitian even when projected into the subspace of states below the energy gap. However, the associated Wilson-loop operator is biorthogonally unitary in the thermodynamic limit, thereby leading to real-valued electronic positions that allow for a clean definition of polarization. Non-Hermitian polarization can be quantized in the presence of certain symmetries, as for Hermitian insulators. Different f…
A triangular triple quantum dot gives various Kondo effects, such as the emergence of an electric polarization accompanied by a complete compensation of spin degrees of freedom. The interplay of spin and charge of electrons in quantum dots is investigated using an Anderson model with an equilateral triangular spin cluster, in which a single electron state at one site is hybridized with a conduction band in a lead. The numerical renormalization group analysis shows how a nonzero electric polarization develops with local electrons traveling in the loop and how it depends on the hybridization str…
We investigate tunable electric polarization and electronic structure of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) allotropes of selenium, which are formed from their constituent one-dimensional (1D) structures through an inter-chain interaction facilitated by the multi-valence nature of Se. Our em ab initio calculations reveal that different quasi-2D Se allotropes display different types of electric polarization, including ferroelectric (FE) polarization normal to the chain direction in alpha and delta allotropes, non-collinear ferrielectric (FiE) polarization along the chain axis in tau-Se, and anti-…
The recently observed unconventional ferroelectricity in AB bilayer graphene sandwiched by hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) presents a new platform to manipulate correlated phases in multilayered van der Waals heterostructures. We present a low-energy continuum model for AB bilayer graphene encapsulated by the top and bottom layers of either hBN or graphene, with two independent twist angles. For the graphene/hBN heterostructures, we show that twist angle asymmetry leads to a layer polarization of the valence and conduction bands. We also show that an out-of-plane displacement field not only tune…
We investigate the physical mechanisms for achieving an electrical control of conventional spin-singlet superconductivity in thin films by focusing on the role of surface orbital polarization. Assuming a multi-orbital description of the metallic state, due to screening effects the electric field acts by modifying the strength of the surface potential and, in turn, yields non-trivial orbital-Rashba couplings. The resulting orbital polarization at the surface and in its close proximity is shown to have a dramatic impact on superconductivity. We demonstrate that, by varying the strength of the el…
We study an orbitally degenerate Kondo effect in a triangular triple quantum dot (TTQD), where the three dots are connected vertically with a single metallic lead through electron tunneling. Both spin and orbital degrees of freedom play an important role in the SU(4) Kondo effect. This is demonstrated by an equilateral TTQD Kondo system at half-filling, by Wilson's numerical renormalization group method. We show how an emergent electric polarization of the TTQD is associated with a crossover from SU(4) to SU(2) symmetry in the low-temperature state. A marked sign reversal of the electric polar…
We find that in BaTiO$_3$ the phonon angular momentum is dominantly pointing in directions perpendicular to the electrical polarization. Therefore, external electric field in ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$ does not control only the direction of electrical polarization, but also the direction of phonon angular momentum. This finding opens up the possibility for electric-field control of physical phenomena that rely on phonon angular momentum. We construct an intuitive model, based on our first-principles calculations, that captures the origin of the relationship between phonon angular momentum and ele…
We develop a nonperturbative approach to the bulk polarization of crystalline electric insulators in $d\geq1$ dimensions. Formally, we define polarization via the response to background fluxes of both charge and lattice translation symmetries. In this approach, the bulk polarization is related to properties of magnetic monopoles under translation symmetries. Specifically, in $2d$ the monopole is a source of $2π$-flux, and the polarization is determined by the crystal momentum of the $2π$-flux. In $3d$ the polarization is determined by the projective representation of translation symmetries on …
We investigate the role of polarization-photon coupling (specifically, polarization-oscillation-induced radiation electric field) in the excitation of ferroelectric thin films by an ultrafast terahertz (THz) electric-field pulse. Analytical theory is developed to predict how the frequencies and relaxation time of three-dimensional soft mode phonons (intrinsic polarization oscillation) are modulated by radiation electric field and epitaxial strain. Ultrafast THz-pulse-driven excitation of harmonic polarization oscillation in strained single-domain ferroelectric thin film is then simulated using…
In the quantum anomalous Hall effect, chiral edge modes are expected to conduct spin polarized current without dissipation and thus hold great promise for future electronics and spintronics with low energy consumption. However, spin polarization of chiral edge modes has never been established in experiments. In this work, we theoretically study spin polarization of chiral edge modes in the quantum anomalous Hall effect, based on both the effective model and more realistic tight-binding model constructed from the first principles calculations. We find that spin polarization can be manipulated b…
