Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were used to evaluate polarity of group III nitrides, such as aluminum nitride (AlN), gallium nitride (GaN) and indium nitride (InN) providing physically sound quantitative measure of polarity of these materials. Two different approaches to polarization of nitride semiconductors were assessed and the conclusions have been used to develop models. It was shown that Berry phase formulation of the electron related polarization component provides a number of various solutions, different for various selection of the simulated volume. The electronic part gives saw-like pattern for polarization. A total number of these solutions, related to well known scaling of the geometric phase, is equal to the number of valence electrons in the system. Summation with similar pattern for ionic part provides several polarization values. Standard dipole density formulation depends on the selection of the simulation volume in periodic continuous way. Using a condition of continuous embedding into the infinite medium, and simultaneously, the zero surface charge representation at crystal boundary provides to physically sound solution. This solution is corresponding to maximal and minimal polarization values and also corresponds to different physical termination of the crystal surfaces, either bare or covered by complementary atoms. This change leads to polarization and electric field reversal. The polarization and related fields in finite size systems were obtained.
Recently, Bafekry et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 120, 189901 (2022)] reported their density functional theory (DFT) results on the elastic constants of C6N7 monolayer. They predicted non-zero elastic constants along the out-of-plane direction for a single-layered material, which contradicts with basic physics of the stiffness tensor for plane stress condition. Moreover, in their work Young's modulus is erroneously calculated. On the basis of DFT calculations, herein we predicted the C11, C12 and C66 of the C6N7 monolayer to be 286, 73 and 107 GPa, respectively, equivalent with an in-plane Youngs mo…
The structural similarity between hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and graphene nanoribbons allows for the formation of heterojunctions with small chain stress. The combination of the insulation nature of the former and the quasi-metallic property of the latter makes this kind of heterostructure particularly interesting for flat optoelectronics. Recently, it was experimentally demonstrated that the shapes of the graphene and h-BN domains can be controlled precisely, and sharp graphene/h-BN interfaces can be created. Here, we investigated the electronic and structural properties of graphene (h-BN…
We combine electron energy-loss spectroscopy and first-principles calculations based on density-functional theory (DFT) to identify the lowest indirect exciton state in the in-plane charge response of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) single crystals. This remarkably sharp mode forms a narrow pocket with a dispersion bandwidth of $\sim 100~\text{meV}$ and, as we argue based on a comparison to our DFT calculations, is predominantly polarized along the $Γ\text{K}$-direction of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. Our data support the recent report by Cassabois \emph{et al.} (Nat. Photon. \textbf{10}, 262)…
Recently, Bafekry et al. [J. Appl. Phys. 130, 114301(2021)] reported their density functional theory (DFT) results on the structural, phonon dispersion, elastic constants and electronic properties of a BCN monolayer. The aforementioned theoretical work however includes erroneous results and discussions, as will be explained in the following.
We combine x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) data with first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations and a multiorbital many body Hamiltonian approach to understand the electronic and magnetic properties of Co atoms adsorbed on h-BN/Ru(0001) and h-BN/Ir(111). The XAS line shape reveals, for both substrates, an electronic configuration close to $3d^8$, corresponding to a spin $S = 1$. Magnetic field dependent XMCD data show large (14 meV) out-of-plane anisotropy on h-BN/Ru(0001), while it is a…
The spatial confinement and the propagation length of surface waves in a single-layer two-dimensional atomic crystal are analysed in term of its surface susceptibility and its surface conductivity. Based on the values of these macroscopic parameters, extracted from experimental observations, it is confirmed that graphene supports a transverse magnetic non-radiating surface mode in the ultraviolet spectral region while a single-layer hexagonal Boron-Nitride is predicted to support a transverse electric non-radiating surface mode in the visible spectrum. This last mode, at a vacuum wavelength of…
The recently observed unconventional ferroelectricity in AB bilayer graphene sandwiched by hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) presents a new platform to manipulate correlated phases in multilayered van der Waals heterostructures. We present a low-energy continuum model for AB bilayer graphene encapsulated by the top and bottom layers of either hBN or graphene, with two independent twist angles. For the graphene/hBN heterostructures, we show that twist angle asymmetry leads to a layer polarization of the valence and conduction bands. We also show that an out-of-plane displacement field not only tune…
We investigate the electronic structure of the flat bands induced by moiré superlattices and electric fields in nearly aligned ABC trilayer graphene-boron nitride interfaces where Coulomb effects can lead to correlated gapped phases. Our calculations indicate that valley-spin resolved isolated superlattice flat bands that carry a finite Chern number $C = 3$ proportional to layer number can appear near charge neutrality for appropriate perpendicular electric fields and twist angles. When the degeneracy of the bands is lifted by Coulomb interactions these topological bands can lead to anomalous …

Electrostatic interactions in nanoscale systems can influence the heat transfer mechanism and interfacial properties. This study uses molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the impact of various electrostatic interactions on the Kapitza resistance ($R_k$) on a hexagonal boron nitride-water system. The Kapitza resistance at hexagonal boron nitride nanotube (hBNNT)-water interface reduces with an increase in diameter of the nanotube due to more aggregation of water molecules per unit surface area. An increase in the partial charges on boron and nitride caused the reduction in $R_k$. With …
We propose an electromechanical scheme where the electronic degrees of freedom of boron vacancy color centers hosted by a hexagonal boron nitride nanoribbon are coupled for quantum information processing. The mutual coupling of color centers is provided via their coupling to the mechanical motion of the ribbon, which in turn stems from the local strain. The coupling strengths are computed by performing ab-initio calculations. The density functional theory (DFT) results for boron vacancy centers on boron nitride monolayers reveal a huge strain susceptibility. In our analysis, we take into accou…
