In this paper we consider the problem of multi-view face detection. While there has been significant research on this problem, current state-of-the-art approaches for this task require annotation of facial landmarks, e.g. TSM [25], or annotation of face poses [28, 22]. They also require training dozens of models to fully capture faces in all orientations, e.g. 22 models in HeadHunter method [22]. In this paper we propose Deep Dense Face Detector (DDFD), a method that does not require pose/landmark annotation and is able to detect faces in a wide range of orientations using a single model based on deep convolutional neural networks. The proposed method has minimal complexity; unlike other recent deep learning object detection methods [9], it does not require additional components such as segmentation, bounding-box regression, or SVM classifiers. Furthermore, we analyzed scores of the proposed face detector for faces in different orientations and found that 1) the proposed method is able to detect faces from different angles and can handle occlusion to some extent, 2) there seems to be a correlation between dis- tribution of positive examples in the training set and scores of the proposed face detector. The latter suggests that the proposed methods performance can be further improved by using better sampling strategies and more sophisticated data augmentation techniques. Evaluations on popular face detection benchmark datasets show that our single-model face detector algorithm has similar or better performance compared to the previous methods, which are more complex and require annotations of either different poses or facial landmarks.
Current face or object detection methods via convolutional neural network (such as OverFeat, R-CNN and DenseNet) explicitly extract multi-scale features based on an image pyramid. However, such a strategy increases the computational burden for face detection. In this paper, we propose a fast face detection method based on discriminative complete features (DCFs) extracted by an elaborately designed convolutional neural network, where face detection is directly performed on the complete feature maps. DCFs have shown the ability of scale invariance, which is beneficial for face detection with hig…

Existing techniques to encode spatial invariance within deep convolutional neural networks only model 2D transformation fields. This does not account for the fact that objects in a 2D space are a projection of 3D ones, and thus they have limited ability to severe object viewpoint changes. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a learnable module, cylindrical convolutional networks (CCNs), that exploit cylindrical representation of a convolutional kernel defined in the 3D space. CCNs extract a view-specific feature through a view-specific convolutional kernel to predict object category score…

Recent years have seen a sharp increase in the number of related yet distinct advances in semantic segmentation. Here, we tackle this problem by leveraging the respective strengths of these advances. That is, we formulate a conditional random field over a four-connected graph as end-to-end trainable convolutional and recurrent networks, and estimate them via an adversarial process. Importantly, our model learns not only unary potentials but also pairwise potentials, while aggregating multi-scale contexts and controlling higher-order inconsistencies. We evaluate our model on two standard benchm…

In this paper, we propose a novel face alignment method using single deep network (SDN) on existing limited training data. Rather than using a max-pooling layer followed one convolutional layer in typical convolutional neural networks (CNN), SDN adopts a stack of 3 layer groups instead. Each group layer contains two convolutional layers and a max-pooling layer, which can extract the features hierarchically. Moreover, an effective data augmentation strategy and corresponding training skills are also proposed to over-come the lack of training images on COFW and 300-W da-tasets. The experiment re…

We propose a novel architecture called the Multi-view Self-Constructing Graph Convolutional Networks (MSCG-Net) for semantic segmentation. Building on the recently proposed Self-Constructing Graph (SCG) module, which makes use of learnable latent variables to self-construct the underlying graphs directly from the input features without relying on manually built prior knowledge graphs, we leverage multiple views in order to explicitly exploit the rotational invariance in airborne images. We further develop an adaptive class weighting loss to address the class imbalance. We demonstrate the effec…
Deep convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are the state-of-the-art performers for object detection task. It is well known that object detection requires more computation and memory than image classification. Thus the consolidation of a CNN-based object detection for an embedded system is more challenging. We design and develop an end-to-end TensorFlow(TF)-based model. Additionally, we employ 8-bit quantization on the learned weights. We use face detection as a…

Although monocular 3D human pose estimation methods have made significant progress, it is far from being solved due to the inherent depth ambiguity. Instead, exploiting multi-view information is a practical way to achieve absolute 3D human pose estimation. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective pipeline for weakly-supervised cross-view 3D human pose estimation. By only using two camera views, our method can achieve state-of-the-art performance in a weakly-supervised manner, requiring no 3D ground truth but only 2D annotations. Specifically, our method contains two steps: triangulatio…

This paper focuses on the problem of generating human face pictures from specific attributes. The existing CNN-based face generation models, however, either ignore the identity of the generated face or fail to preserve the identity of the reference face image. Here we address this problem from the view of optimization, and suggest an optimization model to generate human face with the given attributes while keeping the identity of the reference image. The attributes can be obtained from the attribute-guided image or by tuning the attribute features of the reference image. With the deep convolut…
Face identification/recognition has significantly advanced over the past years. However, most of the proposed approaches rely on static RGB frames and on neutral facial expressions. This has two disadvantages. First, important facial shape cues are ignored. Second, facial deformations due to expressions can have an impact on the performance of such a method. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for dynamic 3D face identification/recognition based on facial keypoints. Face recognition has been an active research area in the past few decades. In general, face recognition can be very challenging due to variations in viewpoint, illumination, facial expression, etc. Therefore it is essential to extract features which are invariant to some or all of these variations. Here a new image representation, called scattering transform/network, has been used to extract features from faces. The scattering transform is a kind of convolutional network which provides a powerful multi-layer representation for signals. After extraction of scattering features, PCA is applied to…

Face detection is challenging as faces in images could be present at arbitrary locations and in different scales. We propose a three-stage cascade structure based on fully convolutional neural networks (FCNs). It first proposes the approximate locations where the faces may be, then aims to find the accurate location by zooming on to the faces. Each level of the FCN cascade is a multi-scale fully-convolutional network, which generates scores at different locations and in different scales. A score map is generated after each FCN stage. Probable regions of face are selected and fed to the next st…
