We review the properties of transversality of distributions with respect to submersions. This allows us to construct a convolution product for a large class of distributions on Lie groupoids. We get a unital involutive algebra $\cE\_{r,s}'(G,Ω^{1/2})$ enlarging the convolution algebra $C^\infty\_c(G,Ω^{1/2})$ associated with any Lie groupoid $G$. We prove that $G$-operators are convolution operators by transversal distributions. We also investigate the microlocal aspects of the convolution product. We give conditions on wave front sets sufficient to compute the convolution product and we show that the wave front set of the convolution product of two distributions is essentially the product of their wave front sets in the symplectic groupoid $T^*G$ of Coste-Dazord-Weinstein. This also leads to a subalgebra $\cE\_{a}'(G,Ω^{1/2})$ of $\cE\_{r,s}'(G,Ω^{1/2})$ which contains for instance the algebra of pseudodifferential $G$-operators and a class of Fourier integral $G$-operators which will be the central theme of a forthcoming paper.
For a Lie groupoid G over a smooth manifold M we construct the adjoint action of the etale Lie groupoid G# of germs of local bisections of G on the Lie algebroid g of G. With this action, we form the associated convolution C_c(M)/R-bialgebra C_c(G#,g). We represent this C_c(M)/R-bialgebra in the algebra of transversal distributions on G. This construction extends the Cartier-Gabriel decomposition of the Hopf algebra of distributions with finite support on a Lie group.
A famous theorem of Dixmier-Malliavin asserts that every smooth, compactly-supported function on a Lie group can be expressed as a finite sum in which each term is the convolution, with respect to Haar measure, of two such functions. We establish that the same holds for a Lie groupoid. Most of the heavy lifting is done by a lemma in the original work of Dixmier-Malliavin. We also need the technology of Lie algebroids and the corresponding notion of exponential map. As an application, we obtain a result on the arithmetic of ideals in the smooth convolution algebra of a Lie groupoid arising from…
Given an action $φ$ of of inverse semigroup $S$ on a ring $A$ (with domain of $φ(s)$ denoted by $D_{s^*}$) we show that if the ideals $D_e$, with $e$ an idempotent, are unital, then the skew inverse semigroup ring $A\rtimes S$ can be realized as the convolution algebra of an ample groupoid with coefficients in a sheaf of rings. Conversely, we show that the convolution algebra of an ample groupoid with coefficients in a sheaf of rings is isomorphic to a skew inverse semigroup ring of this sort. We recover known results in the literature for Steinberg algebras over a field as special cases.
Given a self-similar groupoid action $(G,E)$ on the path space of a finite graph, we study the associated Exel-Pardo étale groupoid ${\mathcal G}(G,E)$ and its $C^*$-algebra $C^*(G,E)$. We review some facts about groupoid actions, skew products and semi-direct products and generalize a result of Renault about similarity of groupoids which resembles Takai duality. We also describe a general strategy to compute the $K$-theory of $C^*(G,E)$ and the homology of ${\mathcal G}(G,E)$ in certain cases and illustrate with an example.
A locally compact groupoid is said to have the weak containment property if its full $C^*$-algebra coincides with its reduced one. This property is strictly weaker than amenability and is known to be equivalent to amenability for transformation groupoids relative to actions of exact discrete groups. We believe that for general étale groupoids one should have the same equivalence of the two properties under some mild exactness assumption. In this paper we try to support this statement.
This is mainly an expository text on the Haagerup property for countable groupoids equipped with a quasi-invariant measure, aiming to complete an article of Jolissaint devoted to the study of this property for probability measure preserving countable equivalence relations. We show that our definition is equivalent to the one given by Ueda in terms of the associated inclusion of von Neumann algebras. It makes obvious the fact that treeability implies the Haagerup property for such groupoids. For the sake of completeness, we also describe, or recall, the connections with amenability and Kazhdan …
Let $G$ be second countable locally compact Hausdorff groupoid with a continuous Haar system. We remove the assumption of amenability in a theorem by Clark about GCR groupoid $C^*$-algebras. We show that if the groupoid $C^*$-algebra of $G$ is GCR then the orbits of $G$ are locally closed.
Many interesting C*-algebras can be viewed as quantizations of Poisson manifolds. I propose that a Poisson manifold may be quantized by a twisted polarized convolution C*-algebra of a symplectic groupoid. Toward this end, I define polarizations for Lie groupoids and sketch the construction of this algebra. A large number of examples show that this idea unifies previous geometric constructions, including geometric quantization of symplectic manifolds and the C*-algebra of a Lie groupoid.
Let G be second countable locally compact Hausdorff groupoid with a continuous Haar system. We remove the assumption of amenability in a theorem of Clark about groupoids whose $C^*$-algebras are CCR. We show that if the groupoid C*-algebra of G is CCR then the orbits of G are closed.
We define what it means for a proper continuous morphism between groupoids to be Haar system preserving, and show that such a morphism induces (via pullback) a *-morphism between the corresponding convolution algebras. We proceed to provide a plethora of examples of Haar system preserving morphisms and discuss connections to noncommutative CW-complexes and interval algebras. We prove that an inverse system of groupoids with Haar system preserving bonding maps has a limit, and that we get a corresponding direct system of groupoid $C^*$-algebras. An explicit construction of an inverse system of …
Given a locally convex space $(\mathcal{A},τ)$ with a Hausdorff locally convex topology $τ$ such that the following maps are continuous; $u \mapsto u^*$ for all $u \in \mathcal{A}$, $x \mapsto x\cdot y$ and $x \mapsto z\cdot x$ for every left and right multipliers of $\mathcal{A}$. In this paper we re-characterized the locally convex partial $*$-algebra $(\mathcal{A}, Γ,\cdot,*,τ)$ arising from these continuous maps in terms of convolution algebra of a Lie groupoid $Γ\rightrightarrows \mathcal{A}$. This is advantageous because the pathologies of the underlying spaces owing to their quantum mec…
We obtain descriptions of central operator-valued Schur and Herz-Schur multipliers, akin to a classical characterisation due to Grothendieck, that reveals a close link between central (linear) multipliers and bilinear multipliers into the trace class. Restricting to dynamical systems where a locally compact group acts on itself by translation, we identify their convolution multipliers as the right completely bounded multipliers, in the sense of Junge-Neufang-Ruan, of a canonical quantum group associated with the underlying group. We provide characterisations of contractive idempotent operator-…
We prove a local index theorem of Atiyah-Singer type for Dirac operators on manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity (Lie manifolds for short). With the help of a renormalized supertrace, defined on a suitable class of regularizing operators, the proof of the index theorem relies on a rescaling technique similar in spirit to Getzler's rescaling. With a given Lie manifold we associate an appropriate integrating Lie groupoid. We then describe the heat kernel of a geometric Dirac operator via a functional calculus with values in the convolution algebra of sections of a rescaled bundle over the …
The author provides some definitions and structural results about Fell bundles, defined as C^*-algebra bundles over topological groupoids. Such bundles are a mutual generalization of semi-direct products of groups with C^*-algebras and C^*-algebra bundles over topological spaces. In particular a Morita equivalence theorem with semi-direct products is established.
In this paper we define K-theoretic secondary invariants attached to a Lie groupoid $G$. The K-theory of $C^*_r(G_{ad}^0)$ (where $G_{ad}^0$ is the adiabatic deformation $G$ restricted to the interval $[0,1)$) is the receptacle for K-theoretic secondary invariants. We give a Lie groupoid version of construction given by Piazza and Schick in the setting of the Coarse Geometry. Our construction directly generalises to more involved geometrical situation, such as foliations, well encoded by a Lie groupoid. Along the way we tackle the problem of producing a wrong-way functoriality between adiabati…
Two conjectures about homology groups, K-groups and topological full groups of minimal etale groupoids on Cantor sets are formulated. We verify these conjectures for many examples of etale groupoids including products of etale groupoids arising from one-sided shifts of finite type. Furthermore, we completely determine when these product groupoids are mutually isomorphic. Also, the abelianization of their topological full groups are computed. They are viewed as generalizations of the higher dimensional Thompson groups.
We show the reduced $C^*$-algebra of a graded ample groupoid is a strongly graded $C^*$-algebra if and only if the corresponding Steinberg algebra is a strongly graded ring. We apply this result to get a theorem about the Leavitt path algebra and $C^*$-algebra of an arbitrary graph.
We define the Zappa-Szép product of a Fell bundle by a groupoid, which turns out to be a Fell bundle over the Zappa-Szép product of the underlying groupoids. Under certain assumptions, every Fell bundle over the Zappa-Szép product of groupoids arises in this manner. We then study the representation associated with the Zappa-Szép product Fell bundle and show its relation to covariant representations. Finally, we study the associated universal C*-algebra, which turns out to be a C*-blend, generalizing an earlier result about the Zappa-Szép product of groupoid C*-algebras. In the case of discrete…
In this article, part of the author's thesis, we propose a definition for measured quantum groupoid. The aim is the construction of objects with duality including both quantum groups and groupoids. We base ourselves on J. Kustermans and S. Vaes' works about locally compact quantum groups that we generalize thanks to formalism introduced by M. Enock and J.M. Vallin in the case of inclusion of von Neumann algebras. From a structure of Hopf-bimodule with left and right invariant operator-valued weights, we define a fundamental pseudo-multiplicative unitary. We introduce the notion of quasi-invari…
This is the second part of our series about the Higson-Roe sequence for étale groupoids. We devote this part to the proof of the universal $K$-theory surgery exact sequence which extends the seminal results of N. Higson and J. Roe to the case of transformation groupoids. In the process, we prove the expected functoriality properties as well as the Paschke-Higson duality theorem.
Let E be a second-countable, locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid equipped with an action of T such that G:=E/T is a principal groupoid with Haar system λ. The twisted groupoid C*-algebra C*(E;G,λ) is a quotient of the C*-algebra of E obtained by completing the space of T-equivariant functions on E. We show that C*(E;G,λ) is postliminal if and only if the orbit space of G is T_0 and that C*(E;G, λ) is liminal if and only if the orbit space is T_1. We also show that C*(E;G, λ) has bounded trace if and only if G is integrable and that C*(E;G, λ) is a Fell algebra if and only if G is Cartan. Let \…
Androulidakis and Skandalis showed how to associate a holonomy groupoid, a smooth convolution algebra and a C*-algebra to any singular foliation. In this note, we consider the singular foliations of a one-dimensional manifold given by vector fields that vanish to order k at a point. We show that, whereas the C*-algebras of these foliations are divided into two isomorphism classes according to the parity of k, the smooth algebras are pairwise nonisomorphic. This is accomplished by analyzing certain natural ideals in the smooth algebras. Issues of factorization with respect to convolution arise …
The goal of this paper is to construct a calculus whose higher indices are naturally elements in the twisted K-theory groups for Lie groupoids. Given a Lie groupoid $G$ and a $PU(H)$-valued groupoid cocycle, we construct an algebra of projective pseudodifferential operators. The subalgebra of regularizing operators identifies with the naturally associated smooth convolution algebra of the associated twisted gerbe. We develop the associated symbolic calculus, symbol short exact sequences and existence of parametrices. In particular the algebra of projective operators appears as a quantization o…
We study the groupoid C*-algebras associated to the equivalence relation induced by a quotient map on a locally compact Hausdorff space. This C*-algebra is always a Fell algebra, and if the quotient space is Hausdorff, it is a continuous-trace algebra. We show that the C*-algebra of a locally compact, Hausdorff and principal groupoid is a Fell algebra if and only if the groupoid is one of these relations, extending a theorem of Archbold and Somerset about etale groupoids. The C*-algebras of these relations are, up to Morita equivalence, precisely the Fell algebras with trivial Dixmier-Douady i…
For $p\in (1,\infty)$, we study representations of étale groupoids on $L^{p}$-spaces. Our main result is a generalization of Renault's disintegration theorem for representations of étale groupoids on Hilbert spaces. We establish a correspondence between $L^{p}$-representations of an étale groupoid $G$, contractive $L^{p}$-representations of $C_{c}(G)$, and tight regular $L^{p}$-representations of any countable inverse semigroup of open slices of $G$ that is a basis for the topology of $G$. We define analogs $F^{p}(G)$ and $F_{\mathrm{red}}^{p}(G)$ of the full and reduced groupoid C*-algebras u…
Let $K$ be a commutative ring with unit and $S$ an inverse semigroup. We show that the semigroup algebra $KS$ can be described as a convolution algebra of functions on the universal étale groupoid associated to $S$ by Paterson. This result is a simultaneous generalization of the author's earlier work on finite inverse semigroups and Paterson's theorem for the universal $C^*$-algebra. It provides a convenient topological framework for understanding the structure of $KS$, including the center and when it has a unit. In this theory, the role of Gelfand duality is replaced by Stone duality. Using …
We study the $C^*$-algebras associated to upper-semicontinuous Fell bundles over second-countable Hausdorff groupoids. Based on ideas going back to the Packer--Raeburn "Stabilization Trick," we construct from each such bundle a groupoid dynamical system whose associated Fell bundle is equivalent to the original bundle. The upshot is that the full and reduced $C^*$-algebras of any saturated upper-semicontinuous Fell bundle are stably isomorphic to the full and reduced crossed products of an associated dynamical system. We apply our results to describe the lattice of ideals of the $C^*$-algebra …
We introduce a class of toposes called "absolutely locally compact" toposes and of "admissible" sheaf of rings over such toposes. To any such ringed topos $(\mathcal{T},A)$ we attach an involutive convolution algebra $\mathcal{C}_c(\mathcal{T},A)$ which is well defined up to Morita equivalence and characterized by the fact that the category of non-degenerate modules over $\mathcal{C}_c(\mathcal{T},A)$ is equivalent to the category of sheaf of $A$-module over $\mathcal{T}$. In the case where $A$ is the sheaf of real or complex Dedekind numbers, we construct several norms on this involutive alge…
We introduce twisted Steinberg algebras over a commutative unital ring $R$. These generalise Steinberg algebras and are a purely algebraic analogue of Renault's twisted groupoid C*-algebras. In particular, for each ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$ and each locally constant $2$-cocycle $σ$ on $G$ taking values in the units $R^\times$, we study the algebra $A_R(G,σ)$ consisting of locally constant compactly supported $R$-valued functions on $G$, with convolution and involution "twisted" by $σ$. We also introduce a "discretised" analogue of a twist $Σ$ over a Hausdorff étale groupoid $G$, and we show…
In this article, we realize ultragraph Leavitt path algebras as Steinberg algebras. This realization allows us to use the groupoid approach to obtain structural results about these algebras. Using skew product groupoid, we show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras are graded von Neumann regular rings. We characterize strongly graded ultragraph Leavitt path algebras and show that every ultragraph Leavitt path algebra is semiprimitive. Moreover, we characterize irreducible representations of ultragraph Leavitt path algebras. We also show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras can be realized as …
We study multivariate generalisations of the classical Wiener--Hopf algebra, which is the C$^*$-algebra generated by the Wiener--Hopf operators, given by the convolutions restricted to convex cones. By the work of Muhly and Renault, this C$^*$-algebra is known to be isomorphic to the reduced C$^*$-algebra of a certain restricted action groupoid, given by the action of Euclidean space on a certain compactification. Using groupoid methods, we construct composition series for the Wiener--Hopf C$^*$-algebra by a detailed study of this compactification. We compute the spectrum, and express homomorp…
We study Fell bundles on groupoids from the viewpoint of quantale theory. Given any saturated upper semicontinuous Fell bundle $π:E\to G$ on an étale groupoid $G$ with $G_0$ locally compact Hausdorff, equipped with a suitable completion C*-algebra $A$ of its convolution algebra, we obtain a map of involutive quantales $p:\mathrm{Max}\ A\toΩ(G)$, where $\mathrm{Max}\ A$ consists of the closed linear subspaces of $A$ and $Ω(G)$ is the topology of $G$. We study various properties of $p$ which mimick, to various degrees, those of open maps of topological spaces. These are closely related to proper…
We study multivariate generalisations of the classical Wiener--Hopf algebra, which is the C$^*$-algebra generated by the Wiener--Hopf operators, given by the convolutions restricted to convex cones. By the work of Muhly and Renault, this C$^*$-algebra is known to be isomorphic to the reduced C$^*$-algebra of a certain restricted action groupoid. In a previous paper, we have determined a composition series of this C$^*$-algebra, and compute the $K$-theory homomorphisms induced by the `symbol' maps given by the subquotients of the composition series in terms of the analytical index of a continuo…
In this note we show that a combinatorial model of Kirchberg algebras in the UCT, namely the Katsura algebras O_{AB}, can be expressed both as groupoid C*-algebras and as inverse semigroup crossed products. We use this picture to obtain results about simplicity, pure infiniteness and nuclearity of O_{AB} using different methods than those used by Katsura.
In this paper we study some analytic properties of bi-free additive convolution, both scalar and operator-valued. We show that using properties of Voiculescu's subordination functions associated to free additive convolution of operator-valued distributions, simpler formulas for bi-free convolutions can be derived. We use these formulas in order to prove a result about atoms of bi-free additive convolutions.
