We investigate dielectric branes in false vacua in Type IIB string theory. The dielectric branes are supported against collapsing by lower energy vacua inside spherical or tube-like branes. We claim that such branes can be seeds for semi-classical (or quantum mechanical) decay of the false vacua, which makes the life-time of the false vacua shorter. Also, we discuss a topology change of a bubble corresponding to the fuzzy monopole triggered by dissolving fundamental strings.
We give a construction of the monopole bundles over fuzzy complex projective spaces as projective modules. The corresponding Chern classes are calculated. They reduce to the monopole charges in the N -> infinity limit, where N labels the representation of the fuzzy algebra.
We show how to generalize our method, based on projective modules and matrix models, which enabled us to derive noncommutative monopoles on a fuzzy sphere, to the non-abelian case, recovering known results in literature. We then discuss a possible candidate for deforming the commutative Chern class to the non-commutative case.
In the previous papers, we studied the 't Hooft-Polyakov (TP) monopole configurations in the U(2) gauge theory on the fuzzy 2-sphere,and showed that they have nonzero topological charge in the formalism based on the Ginsparg-Wilson (GW) relation. In this paper, we will show an index theorem in the TP monopole background, which is defined in the projected space, and provide a meaning of the projection operator. We also extend the index theorem to general configurations which do not satisfy the equation of motion, and show that the configuration space can be classified into the topological secto…
We present new non-Abelian solitonic configurations in the low energy effective theory describing a collection of N parallel D1--branes. These configurations preserve 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 of the spacetime supersymmetry. They are solutions to a set of generalised Nahm's equations which are related to self-duality equations in eight dimensions. Our solutions represent D1--branes which expand into fuzzy funnel configurations ending on collections of intersecting D3--branes. Supersymmetry dictates that such intersecting D3--branes must lie on a calibrated three-surface of spacetime and we argue…
The intersection of the 10-dimensional fuzzy conifold $Y_F^{10}$ with $S^5_F \times S^5_F$ is the compact 8-dimensional fuzzy space $X_F^8$. We show that $X_F^8$ is (the analogue of) a principal $U(1)\times U(1)$ bundle over fuzzy ${SU(3)}/({U(1) \times U(1)}) \left(\equiv\mathcal{M}^6_F\right)$. We construct $\mathcal{M}_F^6$ using the Gell-Mann matrices by adapting Schwinger's construction. The space $\mathcal{M}_F^6$ is of relevance in higher dimensional quantum Hall effect and matrix models of $D$-branes. Further we show that the sections of the monopole bundle can be expressed in the basi…
We study a gauge theory model where there is an intermediate symmetry breaking to a meta- stable vacuum that breaks a simple gauge group to a U (1) factor. Such models admit the existence of meta-stable magnetic monopoles, which we dub false monopoles. We prove the existence of these monopoles in the thin wall approximation. We determine the instantons for the collective coordinate that corresponds to the radius of the monopole wall and we calculate the semi-classical tunneling rate for the decay of these monopoles. The monopole decay consequently triggers the decay of the false vacuum. As the…
In this talk we will report on few results of discrete physics on the fuzzy sphere . In particular non-trivial field configurations such as monopoles and solitons are constructed on fuzzy ${\bf S}^2$ using the language of K-theory, i.e projectors . As we will show, these configurations are intrinsically finite dimensional matrix models . The corresponding monopole charges and soliton winding numbers are also found using the formalism of noncommutative geometry and cyclic cohomology .
We study the `enhancon', a spherical hypersurface apparently made of D-branes, which arises in string theory studies of large N SU(N) pure gauge theories with eight supercharges. When the gauge theory is 2+1 dimensional, the enhancon is an S^2. A relation to charge N BPS multi-monopoles is exploited to uncover many of its detailed properties. It is simply a spherical slice through an Atiyah-Hitchin-like submanifold of the charge $N$ BPS monopole moduli space. In the form of Nahm data, it is built from the N dimensional irreducible representation of SU(2). In this sense the enhancon is a non-co…
In this article, we construct the fuzzy (finite dimensional) analogues of the conifold $Y^6$ and its base $X^5$. We show that fuzzy $X^5$ is (the analogue of) a principal U(1) bundle over fuzzy spheres $S^2_F \times S^2_F$ and explicitly construct the associated monopole bundles. In particular our construction provides an explicit discretization of the spaces $T^{κ,κ}$ and $T^{κ,0}$.
We investigate several properties of Ginsparg-Wilson fermion on fuzzy 2-sphere. We first examine chiral anomaly up to the second order of the gauge field and show that it is indeed reduced to the correct form of the Chern character in the commutative limit. Next we study topologically non-trivial gauge configurations and their topological charges. We investigate 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole type configuration on fuzzy 2-sphere and show that it has the correct commutative limit. We also consider more general configurations in our formulation.
We write down scalar field theory and gauge theory on two-dimensional noncommutative spaces ${\cal M}$ with nonvanishing curvature and non-constant non-commutativity. Usual dynamics results upon taking the limit of ${\cal M}$ going to i) a commutative manifold ${\cal M}_0$ having nonvanishing curvature and ii) the noncommutative plane. Our procedure does not require introducing singular algebraic maps or frame fields. Rather, we exploit the Kähler structure in the limit i) and identify the symplectic two-form with the volume two-form. As an example, we take ${\cal M}$ to be the stereographical…
The intersection of the conifold $z_1^2+z_2^2+z_3^2 =0$ and $S^5$ is a compact 3--dimensional manifold $X^3$. We review the description of $X^3$ as a principal U(1) bundle over $S^2$ and construct the associated monopole line bundles. These monopoles can have only even integers as their charge. We also show the Kaluza--Klein reduction of $X^3$ to $S^2$ provides an easy construction of these monopoles. Using the analogue of the Jordon-Schwinger map, our techniques are readily adapted to give the fuzzy version of the fibration $X^3 \rightarrow S^2$ and the associated line bundles. This is an alt…
Using generalized bosons, we construct the fuzzy sphere $S_F^2$ and monopoles on $S_F^2$ in a reducible representation of $SU(2)$. The corresponding quantum states are naturally obtained using the GNS-construction. We show that there is an emergent non-abelian unitary gauge symmetry which is in the commutant of the algebra of observables. The quantum states are necessarily mixed and have non-vanishing von Neumann entropy, which increases monotonically under a bistochastic Markov map. The maximum value of the entropy has a simple relation to the degeneracy of the irreps that constitute the redu…
Monopoles and solitons have important topological aspects like quantized fluxes, winding numbers and curved target spaces. Naive discretizations which substitute a lattice of points for the underlying manifolds are incapable of retaining these features in a precise way. We study these problems of discrete physics and matrix models and discuss mathematically coherent discretizations of monopoles and solitons using fuzzy physics and noncommutative geometry. A fuzzy sigma-model action for the two-sphere fulfilling a fuzzy Belavin-Polyakov bound is also put forth.
We study the interconnection between the finite projective modules for a fuzzy sphere, determined in a previous paper, and the matrix model approach, making clear the physical meaning of noncommutative topological configurations.
We construct a new giant graviton solution in AdS_5 x Y_5, with Y_5 a quasi-regular Sasaki-Einstein manifold, consisting on a Kaluza-Klein monopole wrapped around the Y_5 and with its Taub-NUT direction in AdS_5. We find that this configuration has minimal energy when put in the centre of AdS_5, where it behaves as a massless particle. When we take Y_5 to be S^5, we provide a microscopical description in terms of multiple gravitational waves expanding into the fuzzy S^5 defined as an S^1 bundle over the fuzzy CP^2. Finally we provide a possible field theory dual interpretation of the construct…
We find new spontaneously generated fuzzy extra dimensions emerging from a certain deformation of $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory with cubic soft supersymmetry breaking and mass deformation terms. First, we determine a particular four dimensional fuzzy vacuum that may be expressed in terms of a direct sum of product of two fuzzy spheres, and denote it in short as $S_F^{2\, Int}\times S_F^{2\, Int}$. The direct sum structure of the vacuum is revealed by a suitable splitting of the scalar fields in the model in a manner that generalizes our approach in \cite{Seckinson}. Fluctuations…
This paper is a review of monopoles, lowest Landau level, fuzzy spheres, and their mutual relations. The Hopf maps of division algebras provide a prototype relation between monopoles and fuzzy spheres. Generalization of complex numbers to Clifford algebra is exactly analogous to generalization of fuzzy two-spheres to higher dimensional fuzzy spheres. Higher dimensional fuzzy spheres have an interesting hierarchical structure made of "compounds" of lower dimensional spheres. We give a physical interpretation for such particular structure of fuzzy spheres by utilizing Landau models in generic ev…
In the previous paper hep-th/0312199 we studied the 't Hooft-Polyakov (TP) monopole configuration in the U(2) gauge theory on the fuzzy 2-sphere and showed that it has a nonzero topological charge in the formalism based on the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. In this paper, by showing that the TP monopole configuration is stabler than the U(2) gauge theory without any condensation in the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons matrix model, we will present a mechanism for dynamical generation of a nontrivial index. We further analyze the instability and decay processes of the U(2) gauge theory and the TP monopole co…
In the presence of a background supergravity flux, N M2-branes will expand via the Myers effect into M5-branes wrapped on a fuzzy three-sphere. In previous work the fluctuations of the M2-branes were shown to be described by the five-dimensional Yang-Mills gauge theory associated to D4-branes. We show that the ABJM prescription for eleven-dimensional momentum in terms of magnetic flux lifts to an instanton flux of the effective five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the sphere, giving an M-theory interpretation for these instantons.
A brane picture in Type IIA superstring for the Yang Monopole is reconsidered. It makes use of D2 and D4-branes wrapped on cycles in the K3 surface. When the model was first presented some problems concerning the charges of the monopoles arised. In this paper, they are shown to be cured by the model itself. Surprisingly, the incompatibility between the multi-charge configuration and the spherical symmetry of the Yang Monopole is seen in the brane description as the emergence of the enhancon shell and the fuzzy geometry. This consistency is deep and surprising, and is the point that triggered t…
Matrix models are proposed as nonperturbative formulations of superstring theory. We study a concrete correspondence of the analytical result between the matrix model and the field theory. In this paper, we focus on a fuzzy sphere and a complex projective space. We show a wave functions/states correspondence of the zero modes of the Dirac operators under the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole background on the continuous/fuzzy sphere. In addition, we propose a Laplacian for a scalar sector of the matrix model and obtain a concrete construction of it.
We construct higher dimensional quantum Hall systems based on fuzzy spheres. It is shown that fuzzy spheres are realized as spheres in colored monopole backgrounds. The space noncommutativity is related to higher spins which is originated from the internal structure of fuzzy spheres. In $2k$-dimensional quantum Hall systems, Laughlin-like wave function supports fractionally charged excitations, $q=m^{-{1/2}k(k+1)}$ (m is odd). Topological objects are ($2k-2$)-branes whose statistics are determined by the linking number related to the general Hopf map. Higher dimensional quantum Hall systems ex…
We start with an $SU(\cal {N})$ Yang-Mills theory on a manifold ${\cal M}$, suitably coupled to two distinct set of scalar fields in the adjoint representation of $SU({\cal N})$, which are forming a doublet and a triplet, respectively under a global $SU(2)$ symmetry. We show that a direct sum of fuzzy spheres $S_F^{2 \, Int} := S_F^2(\ell) \oplus S_F^2 (\ell) \oplus S_F^2 \left ( \ell + \frac{1}{2} \right ) \oplus S_F^2 \left ( \ell - \frac{1}{2} \right )$ emerges as the vacuum solution after the spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry and lay the way for us to interpret the spontaneously b…
The presentation at Strings 2000 was intended to be in two main parts, but there was only time for part one. However both parts appeared on the online proceedings, and are also included in this document. The first part concerns an exploration of the connection between the physics of the `enhancon' geometry arising from wrapping N D6-branes on the K3 manifold in Type IIA string theory and that of a charge N BPS multi-monopole. This also relates to the physics of 2+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with eight supercharges. The main results uncovered by this exploration are: a) better insight into…
The decay of a metastable false vacuum by bubble nucleation is studied in the high temperature limit of the gauge theory in which an SO(3) gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken to an SO(2). The effects of internal symmetry are so drastic that, in addition to the known Euclidean bounce solution, there exists a new bubble solution involving a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole at its center the moment it is nucleated. The decay rate and evolution are analyzed.
Fuzzy hyperboloids naturally emerge in the geometries of D-branes, twistor theory, and higher spin theories. In this work, we perform a systematic study of higher dimensional fuzzy hyperboloids (ultra-hyperboloids) based on non-compact Hopf maps. Two types of non-compact Hopf maps; split-type and hybrid-type, are introduced from the cousins of division algebras. We construct arbitrary even-dimensional fuzzy ultra-hyperboloids by applying the Schwinger operator formalism and indefinite Clifford algebras. It is shown that fuzzy hyperboloids, $H_F^{2p,2q}$, are represented by the coset, $H_F^{2p,…
We evaluate bulk distribution of energies, pressures and various D-brane/F-string charges generated by nontrivial matrix configurations in nonabelian D-brane effective field theories, using supergravity source density formulas derived originally in Matrix theory. Off-diagonal elements of worldvolume nonabelian fields, especially transverse scalar fields, induce various interesting bulk structures exhibiting the shape of branes. First, we study the energy distribution of string-brane networks generated in the bulk by the Yang-Mills monopoles and the 1/4 BPS dyons, and confirm force balance of t…
We find a novel tachyon condensation which provides a D-brane system with spherical worldvolume in the flat spacetime. The tachyon profile is a deformation of a known D0-brane solution on non-BPS D3-branes in type IIA superstring theory, which realizes a bound state of a spherical D2-brane and a D0-brane. The D0-brane is resolved into the sphere as a $U(1)$ monopole flux of the unit magnetic charge. We show that the system has the correct tension and the RR-coupling. Although the low energy effective action of the system is the same as that of the dual description of the fuzzy sphere solution …
The nucleation and evolution of bubbles are investigated in the model of an $O(3)$-symmetric scalar field coupled to gravity in the high temperature limit. It is shown that, in addition to the well-known bubble of which the inside region is true vacuum, there exists another decay channel at high temperature which is described by a new solution such that a false vacuum region like a global monopole remains at the center of a bubble. The value of the Euclidean action of this bubble is higher than that of the ordinary bubble; however, the production rate of it can be considerable for a certain ra…
In this letter we present a derivation, from the D0-brane picture, of the background monopole field and in general of the full dynamics of the Yang-Mills theory on the dielectric D2-brane of Myers. To do this we study the large N limit of the fuzzy sphere relevant to the dielectric solution. In contrast to the usual interpretation, where the commutative D2-brane picture arises directly from the large N limit of the D0-brane picture, we find that a residual non-commutativity must be preserved, in order to make the connection by means of the Seiberg-Witten map.
We consider a decay of a false vacuum in flux compactifications of type IIB string theory and study a catalytic effect for a phase transition induced by a new type of impurities. We concentrate on the large N dual of a D5-brane/anti-D5-brane system which has a rich vacuum structure. We show that D3-branes wrapping the 3-cycles can form a dibaryon and make a bound state with a monopole. We find that these baryon-like objects can make the lifetime of the metastable vacuum shorter.
In the present paper, we investigated the gravitational black-hole-hedgehog's solution with magnetic field contribution in the framework of the f(R)--gravity described by the Gravi-Weak unification model. Assuming the Multiple Point Principle (MPP), we considered the existence of the two degenerate vacua of the Universe: the first Electroweak (EW) vacuum with $v_1 \approx 246$ GeV ("true vacuum"), and the second Planck scale ("false vacuum") with $v_2 \sim 10^{18}$ GeV. In these vacua, we investigated different topological defects. The main aim of this paper is an investigation of the black-ho…
In the present paper, assuming the Multiple Point Principle (MPP) as a new law of Nature, we considered the existence of the two degenerate vacua of the Universe: a) the first Electroweak (EW) vacuum at $v_1\approx 246$ GeV -- "true vacuum", and b) the second Planck scale "false vacuum" at $v_2 \sim 10^{18}$ GeV. In these vacua we investigated different topological defects. The main aim of this paper is an investigation of the black-hole-hedgehogs configurations as defects of the false vacuum. In the framework of the $f(R)$ gravity, described by the Gravi-Weak unification model, we considered …
