We measure the location and evolutionary vectors of 69 Herschel-detected broad-line active galactic nuclei (BLAGNs) in the M_BH-M_* plane. BLAGNs are selected from the COSMOS and CDF-S fields, and span the redshift range 0.2< z<2.1. Black-hole masses are calculated using archival spectroscopy and single-epoch virial mass estimators, and galaxy total stellar masses are calculated by fitting the spectral energy distribution (subtracting the BLAGN component). The mass-growth rates of both the black hole and galaxy are calculated using Chandra/XMM-Newton X-ray and Herschel far-infrared data, reliable measures of the BLAGN accretion and galaxy star formation rates, respectively. We use Monte Carlo simulations to account for biases in our sample, due to both selection limits and the steep slope of the massive end of the galaxy stellar-mass distribution. We find our sample is consistent with no evolution in the M_BH-M_* relation from z~2 to z~0. BLAGNs and their host galaxies which lie off the black hole mass galaxy total stellar mass relation tend to have evolutionary vectors anti-correlated with their mass ratios: that is, galaxies with over-massive (under-massive) black holes tend to have a low (high) ratio of the specific accretion rate to the specific star formation rate. We also use the measured growth rates to estimate the preferred AGN duty cycle for our galaxies to evolve most consistently onto the local M_BH-M_Bul relation. Under reasonable assumptions of exponentially declining star formation histories, the data suggest a non-evolving (no more than a factor of a few) BLAGN duty cycle among star-forming galaxies of 10% (1sigma range of 1-42% at z<1 and 2-34% at z>1).
We present constraints on the timescale of star formation variability and the correlation between star formation and host halo accretion histories of star-forming (SF) central galaxies from the scatter of the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR). SF galaxies are found to have a tight relationship between their star formation rates and stellar masses on the so-called "star-forming sequence" (SFS), which characterizes their SF histories and $M_*$ growths. Meanwhile, observed SHMR constraints connect $M_*$ growth to halo accretion history. Combining these observed trends with a cosmological $N$-b…
MS 0735.6+7421 is a galaxy cluster which hosts a central radio galaxy with a very steep spectrum, produced by one of the most powerful known jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN). The radio plasma, ejected at nearly light speed from the central AGN, have displaced the intra-cluster medium, leaving two pairs of cavities observable in the X-ray, associated to two different outbursts, and have distributed energy to the surrounding medium. In this work we have performed for the first time a detailed, high-resolution spectral study of the source at radio frequencies and investigated its duty cycle to…
We study the mass of quasar-hosting dark matter halos at z $\sim$ 6 and further constrain the fraction of dark matter halos hosting an active quasar $f_{on}$ and the quasar beaming angle $i_{\rm max}$ using observations of CII lines in the literature. We make assumptions that (1) more massive halos host brighter quasars, (2) a fraction of the halos host active quasars with a certain beaming angle, (3) cold gas in galaxies has rotational velocity $V_{\rm circ}=αV_{\rm max}$, and that (4) quasars point randomly on the sky. We find that for a choice of specific $α\gtrsim 1$, the most likely solut…
Restarted radio galaxies represent a unique tool to investigate the duty cycle of the jet activity in Active Galactic Nuclei. Due to a sharp discontinuity of the GHz spectral index distribution within its lobes, the radio galaxy 3C388 has for long being claimed to be a peculiar example of AGN with multi-epoch activity. In this work we have performed, for the first time, a spatially resolved study of the radio spectrum of this source down to MHz-frequencies, aimed at investigating its radiative age and duty cycle. We have used new low frequency observations at 144 MHz performed with LOFAR and a…
Radio loud Active Galactic Nuclei are episodic in nature, cycling through periods of activity and quiescence. In this work we investigate the duty cycle of the radio galaxy B2~0258+35, which was previously suggested to be a restarted radio galaxy based on its morphology. The radio source consists of a pair of kpc-scale jets embedded in two large-scale lobes (~240 kpc) with relaxed shape and very low surface brightness, which resemble remnants of a past AGN activity. We have combined new LOFAR data at 145 MHz and new SRT data at 6600 MHz with available WSRT data at 1400 MHz to investigate the s…
A massive black hole exists in almost every galaxy. They occasionally radiate a vast amount of light by releasing gravitational energy of accreting gas, with a cumulative active period of only a few $10^8$ years, so-called the duty cycle of the Active Galactic Nuclei. Namely, many galaxies today host a starving massive black hole. Although galaxy collisions have been thought to enhance nucleus activity, the origin of the duty cycle, especially the shutdown process, is a still critical issue. Here we show that galaxy collisions are also capable of suppressing black hole fueling by using an anal…
The total extragalactic $γ$-ray flux provides a powerful probe into the origin and evolution of the highest energy processes in our universe. An important component of this emission is the isotropic $γ$-ray background (IGRB), composed of sources that cannot be individually resolved by current experiments. Previous studies have determined that the IGRB can be dominated by either misaligned active galactic nuclei (mAGN) or star-forming galaxies (SFGs). However, these analyses are limited, because they have utilized binary source classifications and examined only one source class at a time. We pe…
Theoretical models of wind-driven feedback from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) often identify Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) as being the main cause for generating galaxy-size outflows, possibly the main actors in establishing the so-called AGN-galaxy co-evolution. UFOs are well characterized in local AGN but much less is known in quasars at the cosmic time when SF and AGN activity peaked ($z\simeq1-3$). It is therefore mandatory to search for evidences of UFOs in high-$z$ sources to test the wind-driven AGN feedback models. Here we present a study of Q2237+030, the Einstein Cross, a quadruply-image…
Large-scale outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) can have a profound influence on their host galaxies. The outflow properties themselves depend sensitively on the history of AGN energy injection during the lifetime of the outflow. Most observed outflows have dynamical timescales longer than the typical AGN episode duration, i.e. they have been inflated by multiple AGN episodes. Here, we present a neural-network based approach to inferring the most likely duty cycle and other properties of AGN based on the observable properties of their massive outflows. Our model recovers the AGN pa…
A mild correlation exists in active galaxies between the mean black hole accretion, as traced by the mean X-ray luminosity $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>$, and the host galaxy stellar mass M$_*$, characterised by a normalisation steadily decreasing with cosmic time and lower in more quiescent galaxies. We create comprehensive semi-empirical mock catalogues of active black holes to pin down which parameters control the shape and evolution of the $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>-{\rm M}_*$ relation of X-ray detected active galaxies. We find that the normalisation of the $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>…
Motivated by the apparently conflicting results reported in the literature on the effect of environment on nuclear activity, we have carried out a new analysis by comparing the fraction of galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the most overdense regions (rich galaxy clusters) and the most underdense ones (voids) in the local universe. Exploiting the classical BPT diagnostics, we have extracted volume limited samples of star forming and AGN galaxies. We find that, at variance with star-forming galaxies, AGN galaxies have similar distributions of specific star formation rates and of …

The outer Galaxy beyond the Outer Arm provides a good opportunity to study star formation in an environment significantly different from that in the solar neighborhood. However, star-forming regions in the outer Galaxy have never been comprehensively studied or cataloged because of the difficulties in detecting them at such large distances. We studied 33 known young star-forming regions associated with 13 molecular clouds at $R_{\rm G}$ $\ge$ 13.5 kpc in the outer Galaxy with data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-infrared all-sky survey. From their color distribution, we…
The outer Galaxy is an environment with metallicity lower than the Solar one. Because of this, the formation and survival of molecules in star-forming regions located in the inner and outer Galaxy is expected to be different. To gain understanding on how chemistry changes throughout the Milky Way, it is crucial to observe outer Galaxy star-forming regions to constrain models adapted for lower metallicity environments. In this paper we present a new observational project: chemical complexity in star-forming regions of the outer Galaxy (CHEMOUT). The goal is to unveil the chemical composition in…
The growth of galaxy clusters is energetic and may trigger and/or quench star formation and black hole activity. The ENISALA project is a collection of multiwavelength observations aimed at understanding how large-scale structure drives galaxy and black hole evolution. Here, we introduce optical spectroscopy of over 800 H$α$ emission-line galaxies, selected in 14 z~0.15-0.31 galaxy clusters, spanning a range of masses and dynamical states. We investigate the nature of the emission lines in relation to the host galaxy properties, its location within the cluster, and the properties of the parent…
We investigate the relationship between environment and the galaxy main sequence (the relationship between stellar mass and star formation rate) and also the relationship between environment and radio luminosity (P$_{\rm 1.4GHz}$) to shed new light on the effects of the environments on galaxies. We use the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz catalogue that consists of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and quiescent galaxies (AGN) in three different environments (field, filament, cluster) and for three different galaxy types (satellite, central, isolated). We perform for the first time a comparative analysis of the di…

We present properties of two types of bulges (classical- and pseudo- bulges) in 20 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) observed in the near infrared of the $H$, $K_s$ and 1.91$μ$m narrow-band targeting at the hydrogen Pa$α$ emission line by the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) 1.0 m telescope. To classify the two types of bulges, we first perform a two-dimensional bulge-disk decomposition analysis in the $K_\mathrm{s}$-band images. The result shows a tentative bimodal distribution of Sérsic indices with a separation at $\log(n_b)\sim0.5$, which is consistent with that of classical …
The morphology of galaxies reflects their assembly history and ongoing dynamical perturbations from the environment. Analyzing i-band images from the Pan-STARRS1 Survey, we study the optical morphological asymmetry of the host galaxies of a large, well-defined sample of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to investigate the role of mergers and interactions in triggering nuclear activity. The AGNs, comprising 245 type 1 and 4514 type 2 objects, are compared with 4537 star-forming galaxies matched in redshift and stellar mass. We develop a comprehensive masking strategy to isolate the emission …

We use data from 1222 late-type star-forming galaxies in the SDSS IV MaNGA survey to identify regions in which the gas-phase metallicity is anomalously-low compared to expectations from the tight empirical relation between metallicity and stellar surface mass-density at a given stellar mass. We find anomalously low metallicity (ALM) gas in 10% of the star-forming spaxels, and in 25% of the galaxies in the sample. The incidence rate of ALM gas increases strongly with both global and local measures of the specific star-formation rate, and is higher in lower mass galaxies and in the outer regions…
We investigate the infrared contribution from supermassive black hole activity versus host galaxy emission in the mid to far-infrared (IR) spectrum for a large sample of X-ray bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) residing in dusty, star-forming host galaxies. We select 703 AGN with L_X = 10^42-46 ergs/s at 0.1 < z < 5 from the Chandra XBootes X-ray Survey with rich multi-band observations in the optical to far-IR. This is the largest sample to date of X-ray AGN with mid and far-IR detections that uses spectral energy distribution (SED) decomposition to determine intrinsic AGN and host galaxy in…
We study the connection between active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their host galaxies through cosmic time in the large-scale cosmological IllustrisTNG simulations. We first compare BH properties, i.e. the hard X-ray BH luminosity function, AGN galaxy occupation fraction, and distribution of Eddington ratios, to available observational constraints. The simulations produce a population of BHs in good agreement with observations, but we note an excess of faint AGN in hard X-ray (L_x ~ 10^{43-44} erg/s), and a lower number of bright AGN (L_x>10^{44} erg/s), a conclusion that varies quantitatively b…
We derive the recent star formation histories of 23 active dwarf galaxies using HST observations from the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey (LEGUS). We apply a color-magnitude diagram fitting technique using two independent sets of stellar models, PARSEC-COLIBRI and MIST. Despite the non-negligible recent activity, none of the 23 star forming dwarfs show enhancements in the last 100 Myr larger than three times the 100-Myr-average. The unweighted mean of the individual SFHs in the last 100 Myr is also consistent with a rather constant activity, irrespective of the atomic gas fraction. We confirm p…
We present a study of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in the local Universe (z < 0.33) and its correlation with the host galaxy properties, derived from a Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR8) sample with spectroscopic star-formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass ($\mathcal{M}_{\ast}$) determination. To quantify the level of AGN activity we used X-ray information from the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue (3XMM DR8). Applying multiwavelength AGN selection criteria (optical BPT-diagrams, X-ray/optical ratio etc) we found that 24% of the detected sources are efficiently-accreting …
Feedback, in particular from active galactic nuclei (AGN), is believed to play a crucial role in the evolution of galaxies. In the local Universe, many galaxies with an AGN are indeed observed to reside in the so-called green valley, usually interpreted as a transition phase from a blue star-forming to a red quenched state. We use data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to show that such an interpretation requires substantial revision. Optically-selected nearby AGN galaxies follow exponentially declining star formation histories, as normal galaxies of similar stellar and dark matter halo mass, …
A closer view of the radio-FIR correlation: disentangling the contributions of star formation and AGN activity
The general consensus is that LTGs undergo intense star-formation activity, while ETGs are mostly inactive. We question this general rule and investigate the existence of star-forming ETGs and quiescent LTGs in the local Universe. By computing the physical properties of 2,209 such galaxies in the GAMA survey being morphologically classified and using information on their structural properties as well as the density of their local environment, we seek for understanding the differences from their 'typical' counterparts. We separate galaxies into subsets based on their dominant ionising process, …
