The total extragalactic $γ$-ray flux provides a powerful probe into the origin and evolution of the highest energy processes in our universe. An important component of this emission is the isotropic $γ$-ray background (IGRB), composed of sources that cannot be individually resolved by current experiments. Previous studies have determined that the IGRB can be dominated by either misaligned active galactic nuclei (mAGN) or star-forming galaxies (SFGs). However, these analyses are limited, because they have utilized binary source classifications and examined only one source class at a time. We perform the first combined joint-likelihood analysis that simultaneously correlates the $γ$-ray luminosity of extragalactic objects with both star-formation and mAGN activity. We find that SFGs produce 48$^{+33}_{-20}$\% of the total IGRB at~1 GeV and 56$^{+40}_{-23}$\% of the total IGRB at 10 GeV. The contribution of mAGN is more uncertain, but can also be significant. Future work to quantify the radio and infrared properties of nearby galaxies could significantly improve these constraints.
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) host powerful jets containing high-energy electrons and protons. The astrophysical environment where AGNs and their jets are found is characterized by large concentrations of both dark matter (DM) and intra-cluster medium (ICM) gas. As the high-energy jet particles transverse the DM and the ICM, elastic and inelastic scattering processes generically lead to the production of final-state photons. As first envisioned by Bloom and Wells (1998), and as more recently pointed out by us and others, the scattering of electrons off of DM could lead to a potentially detectab…
The Fermi-LAT satellite has recently discovered a small group of radio galaxies and steep spectrum radio sources: the misaligned AGNs (MAGNs) sample. We present the X-ray analysis of all the sources of this sample (7 FRIs and 3 FRIIs) with a firm GeV association. This study supports the idea that FRIIs host more efficient accretion mechanisms (m_dot >0.1) than FRIs (m_dot <0.003). Furthermore, in objects with high accretion rates the Broad Line Regions appear to be very active zones where, in addition to optical lines, the fluorescence iron Kalpha feature at 6.4 keV is also produced. It seems …
Radio galaxies have emerged as a new gamma-ray emitting source class on the extragalactic sky. With their jets misaligned, i.e. not directly pointing towards us, they offer a unique tool to probe some of the fundamental (and otherwise hidden) non-thermal processes in AGN. This contribution briefly summarizes the observed characteristics of the four radio galaxies detected so far at very high energies (VHE). Given its prominence, particular attention is given to the origin of the variable VHE emission in M87. We discuss some of the theoretical progress achieved for this source within recent yea…
We review the high energy properties of Misaligned AGNs associated with gamma-ray sources detected by Fermi in 24 months of survey. Most of them are nearby emission low power radio galaxies (i.e FRIs) which probably have structured jets. On the contrary, high power radio sources (i.e FRIIs) with GeV emission are rare. The small number of FRIIs does not seem to be related to their higher redshifts. Assuming proportionality between the radio core flux and the gamma-ray flux, several of them are expected to be bright enough to be detected above 100 MeV in spite of their distance. We suggest that …
The very short time scale variability of TeV $γ$-ray emission from active galaxies suggests that the acceleration process of particles and the production of primary $γ$-rays likely occurs relatively close to the accretion disk. We calculate the $γ$-ray spectra produced in an Inverse Compton $e^\pm$ pair cascade initiated by primary $γ$-rays which are injected close to the surface of the accretion disk. Possible synchrotron energy losses of secondary cascade $e^\pm$ pairs are also taken into account. Since the soft radiation field is anisotropic, the resulting $γ$-ray spectra strongly depend on…
Non-blazar Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) have emerged as a new gamma-ray emitting source class on the extragalactic sky and started to deepen our understanding of the physical processes and the nature of AGN in general. The detection of Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies in the Fermi-LAT energy regime, for example, offers important information for our understanding of jet formation and radio-loudness. Radio galaxies, on the other hand, have become particularly interesting at high (HE) and very high (VHE) gamma-ray energies. With their jets not directly pointing towards us (i.e. misaligned), they of…
Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe) shine at multi-wavelengths and are expected to constitute the largest class of gamma-ray sources in our Galaxy. They are known to be very efficient particle accelerators: the Crab nebula, the PWNe class prototype, is the unique firmly identified leptonic PeVatron of the Galaxy to date, and most of the PeVatrons recently detected by LHAASO appear to be compatible with a pulsar origin. PWNe have been proved to be associated with the formation of misaligned X-ray tails and TeV halos, as sign of an efficient escape of energetic particles from the PWN into the surrounding…
We model the expected X-ray polarisation induced by complex reprocessing in the active nucleus of the Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 1068. Recent analysis of infrared interferometry observations suggests that the ionised outflows ejected by the central engine are not aligned with the symmetry axis of the obscuring torus. This conclusion was obtained by extrapolating the apparent orientation of the narrow line region to the inner parts of the ionisation cones. We show that future measurements of the soft X-ray polarisation vector unambiguously determine the orientation of the ionisation cones. Furthermor…
The majority of the activity around nearby (z ~ 0) supermassive black holes is found in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN), the most of them being classified as low ionization nuclear emission regions. Although these sources are well studied from radio up to X-rays, they are poorly understood in gamma-rays. In this work we take advantage of the all sky-surveying capabilities of the Large Area Telescope on board Fermi Gamma ray Space Telescope to study the whole Palomar sample of LLAGN in gamma-rays. Precisely, the four radio-brightest LLAGN in the sample are identified as significan…
PKS 0521-36 is an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) with uncertain classification. We investigate the properties of this source from radio to gamma rays. The broad emission lines in the optical and UV bands and steep radio spectrum indicate a possible classification as an intermediate object between broad-line radio galaxies (BLRG) and steep spectrum radio quasars (SSRQ). On pc-scales PKS 0521-36 shows a knotty structure similar to misaligned AGN. The core dominance and the gamma-ray properties are similar to those estimated for other SSRQ and BLRG detected in gamma rays, suggesting an intermediat…
Active Galactic Nuclei can be copious extragalactic emitters of MeV-GeV-TeV gamma rays, a phenomenon linked to the presence of relativistic jets powered by a super-massive black hole in the center of the host galaxy. Most of gamma-ray emitting active galactic nuclei, with more than 1500 known at GeV energies, and more than 60 at TeV energies, are called "blazars". The standard blazar paradigm features a jet of relativistic magnetized plasma ejected from the neighborhood of a spinning and accreting super-massive black hole, close to the observer direction. Two classes of blazars are distinguish…
It has been suggested that strongly magnetised and rapidly rotating protoneutron stars (PNSs) may produce long duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originating from stellar core collapse. We explore the steady-state properties and heavy element nucleosynthesis in neutrino-driven winds from such PNSs whose magnetic axis is generally misaligned with the axis of rotation. We consider a wide variety of central engine properties such as surface dipole field strength, initial rotation period and magnetic obliquity to show that heavy element nuclei can be synthesised in the radially expanding wind. This …
We present a multi-wavelength study of IC 1531 (z=0.02564), an extragalactic radio source associated with the $γ$-ray object 3FGL J0009.9-3206 and classified as a blazar of uncertain type in the Third Fermi Large Area Telescope AGN Catalog (3LAC). A core-jet structure, visible in radio and X-rays, is enclosed within a $\sim$220 kpc wide radio structure. The morphology and spectral characteristics of the kiloparsec jet in radio and X-rays are typical of Fanaroff-Riley type I galaxies. The analysis of the radio data and optical spectrum and different diagnostic methods based on the optical, infr…
We carried out a detailed study of the temporal and broadband spectral behaviour of one of the brightest misaligned active galaxies in gamma-rays, NGC 1275 utilising 11 years of Fermi, and available Swift and AstroSat observations. Based on the cumulative flux distribution of the gamma-ray lightcurve, we identified four distinct activity states and noticed an increase in the baseline flux during the first three states. Similar nature of the increase in the average flux was also noticed in X-ray and UV bands. A large flaring activity in gamma-rays was noticed in the fourth state. The source was…
In this paper, we characterize the first $γ$-ray flaring episode of the FSRQ PKS 0346-27 (z=0.991), as revealed by Fermi-LAT monitoring data, and the concurrent multi-wavelength variability observed from radio through X-rays. The quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength coverage allowed us to construct time-resolved spectral energy distributions (SEDs). PKS 0346-27 entered an elevated $γ$-ray activity state starting from the beginning of 2018. The high-state continued throughout the year, displaying the highest fluxes in May 2018. We find evidence of short-time scale variability down to $\sim$1.5 h…
M87 is a nearby radio galaxy that has been detected at energies ranging from radio to very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays. Its proximity and its jet, misaligned from the line of sight allow detailed morphological studies. The imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique (from 100 GeV to 10 TeV) provides insufficient angular resolution (few arc-minutes) to resolve the M87 emission region. However, the short time scale variability observed by MAGIC, HESS and VERITAS suggests the TeV emission is coming from a very small region, most likely close to the core. We propose that the variable TeV emission may…
We explore heavy element nucleosynthesis in neutrino-driven winds from rapidly-rotating, strongly magnetized proto-neutron stars for which the magnetic dipole is aligned with the rotation axis, and the field is assumed to be a static force-free configuration. We process the proto-magnetar wind trajectories calculated by Vlasov et al 2014 through the r-process nuclear reaction network SkyNet using contemporary models for the evolution of the wind electron fraction during the proto-neutron star cooling phase. Although we do not find a successful second or third peak r-process for any rotation pe…
The spectra of BL Lac objects and Fanaroff-Riley I radio galaxies are commonly explained by the one-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. Spectral modeling of correlated multiwavelength data gives the comoving magnetic field strength, the bulk outflow Lorentz factor and the emission region size. Assuming the validity of the SSC model, the Hillas condition shows that only in rare cases can such sources accelerate protons to much above 10^19 eV, so > 10^20 eV ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are likely to be heavy ions if powered by this type of radio-loud active galactic nuc…
The recent detection by the Fermi gamma-ray space telescope of high-energy gamma-rays from the radio galaxy NGC 1275 makes the observation of the very high energy (VHE: E > 100 GeV) part of its broadband spectrum particularly interesting, especially for the understanding of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with misaligned multi-structured jets. The radio galaxy NGC 1275 was recently observed by VERITAS at energies above 100 GeV for about 8 hours. No VHE gamma-ray emission was detected by VERITAS from NGC 1275. A 99% confidence level upper limit of 2.1% of the Crab Nebula flux level is obtained at …
The nature of the Isotropic $γ$-ray Background (IGRB) measured by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi $γ$-ray space Telescope ({\it Fermi}) remains partially unexplained. Non-negligible contributions may originate from extragalactic populations of unresolved sources such as blazars, star-forming galaxies or galactic milli-second pulsars. A recent prediction of the diffuse $γ$-ray emission from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with a large viewing angle with respect to the line-of-sight (l.o.s.) has demonstrated that this faint but numerous population is also expected to contribute signific…

M87 is a nearby radio galaxy that is detected at energies ranging from radio to VHE gamma-rays. Its proximity and its jet, misaligned from our line-of-sight, enable detailed morphological studies and extensive modeling at radio, optical, and X-ray energies. Flaring activity was observed at all energies, and multi-wavelength correlations would help clarify the origin of the VHE emission. In this paper, we describe a detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the VERITAS VHE gamma-ray observations of M87 in 2008 and 2009. In the 2008 observing season, VERITAS detected an excess with a statistica…
