We describe a procedure for determining the existence, or non-existence, of an algebraic variety of a given conductor via an analytic calculation involving L-functions. The procedure assumes that the Hasse-Weil L-function of the variety satisfies its conjectured functional equation, but there is no assumption of an associated automorphic object or Galois representation. We demonstrate the method by finding the Hasse-Weil L-functions of all hyperelliptic curves of conductor less than 500.
Let $F$ be a totally real field of degree $g$, and let $p$ be a prime number. We construct $g$ partial Hasse invariants on the characteristic $p$ fiber of the Pappas-Rapoport splitting model of the Hilbert modular variety for $F$ with level prime to $p$, extending the usual partial Hasse invariants defined over the Rapoport locus. In particular, when $p$ ramifies in $F$, we solve the problem of lack of partial Hasse invariants. Using the stratification induced by these generalized partial Hasse invariants on the splitting model, we prove in complete generality the existence of Galois pseudo-re…
It is proved that the Hasse-Weil zeta functions of the canonical components of the ${\rm SL}_2$ (${\rm PSL}_2$)-character varieties of closed orientable complete hyperbolic $3$-manifolds of finite volume are equal to the Dedekind zeta functions of their trace fields (invariant trace fields). When the closed $3$-manifold is arithmetic, the special value at $s=2$ of the Hasse-Weil zeta function of the canonical component of the ${\rm PSL}_2$-character variety is expressed in terms of the hyperbolic volume of the manifold up to rational numbers.

Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety with a fibration into varieties that either satisfy a condition on representability of zero-cycles or that are torsors under an abelian variety. We study the classes in the Brauer group that never obstruct the Hasse principle for $X$. We prove that if the generic fiber has a zero-cycle of degree $d$ over the generic point, then the Brauer classes whose orders are prime to $d$ do not play a role in the Brauer--Manin obstruction. As a result we show that the odd torsion Brauer classes never obstruct the Hasse principle for del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2, ce…
We construct group-theoretical generalizations of the Hasse invariant on strata closures of the stacks $G$-Zip$^μ$. Restricting to zip data of Hodge type, we obtain a group-theoretical Hasse invariant on every Ekedahl-Oort stratum closure of a general Hodge-type Shimura variety. A key tool is the construction of a stack of zip flags $G$-ZipFlag$^μ$, fibered in flag varieties over $G$-Zip$^μ$. It provides a simultaneous generalization of the "classical case" homogeneous complex manifolds studied by Griffiths-Schmid and the "flag space" for Siegel varieties studied by Ekedahl-van der Geer. Four …
We derive the Hasse principle and weak approximation for pencils of certain varieties in the spirit of work by Colliot-Thélène,Sansuc and Harpaz-Skorobogatov-Wittenberg. Our varieties are defined through polynomials in many variables and part of our work is devoted to establishing Schinzel's hypothesis for polynomials of this kind. This last part is achieved by using arguments behind Birch's well-known result regarding the Hasse principle for complete intersections with the notable difference that we prove our result in 50% fewer variables than in the classical Birch setting. We also study the…
Given a prime power $q$ and $n \gg 1$, we prove that every integer in a large subinterval of the Hasse--Weil interval $[(\sqrt{q}-1)^{2n},(\sqrt{q}+1)^{2n}]$ is $#A(\mathbb{F}_q)$ for some geometrically simple ordinary principally polarized abelian variety $A$ of dimension $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. As a consequence, we generalize a result of Howe and Kedlaya for $\mathbb{F}_2$ to show that for each prime power $q$, every sufficiently large positive integer is realizable, i.e., $#A(\mathbb{F}_q)$ for some abelian variety $A$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Our result also improves upon the best known const…
In this paper we prove Hasse local-global principle for polynomials with coefficients in Mordell-Weil type groups over number fields like S-units, abelian varieties with trivial ring of endomorphisms and odd algebraic K-theory groups.
In this paper, we focus on computing the higher slope Hasse polynomials of L-functions of certain exponential sums associated to the following family of Laurent polynomials $f(x_1,\ldots ,x_{n+1})=\sum_{i=1}^na_i x_{n+1}\left(x_i+\frac{1}{x_i}\right)+a_{n+1} x_{n+1}+\frac{1}{x_{n+1}}$, where $a_i \in \F^*_{q}$, $i=1,2, \ldots, n+1$. We find a simple formula for the Hasse polynomial of the slope one side and study the irreducibility of these Hasse polynomials. We will also provide a simple form of all the higher slope Hasse polynomials for $n=3$, answering an open question of Zhang and Feng.
We define and study a $p$-adic analogue of the incomplete gamma function related to Morita's $p$-adic gamma function. We also discuss a combinatorial identity related to the Artin-Hasse series, which is a special case of the exponential principle in combinatorics. From this we deduce a curious $p$-adic property of $|\mathrm{Hom} (G,S_n)|$ for a topologically finitely generated group $G$, using a characterization of $p$-adic continuity for certain functions $f \colon \mathbb Z_{>0} \to \mathbb Q_p$ due to O'Desky-Richman. In the end, we give an exposition of some standard properties of the Arti…
The corresponding Hasse-Weil bound was a major breakthrough in history of mathematics. It has found many applications in mathematics, coding theory and theoretical computer science. In general, the Hasse-Weil bound is tight and cannot be improved. However, the Hasse-Weil bound is no longer tight when it is applied to some specific classes of curves. One of the examples where the Hasse-Weil bound is not tight is the family of Artin-Schreier curves. Due to various applications of Artin-Schreier curves to coding, cryptography and theoretical computer science, researchers have made great effort to…
We consider refined conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type for the Hasse-Weil-Artin L-series of abelian varieties over general number fields. We shall, in particular, formulate several new such conjectures and establish their precise relation to previous conjectures, including to the relevant special case of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. We also derive a wide range of concrete interpretations and explicit consequences of these conjectures that, in general, involve a thoroughgoing mixture of difficult archimedean considerations related to refinements of the conjecture of De…
We use the Aubry-Perret bound for singular curves, a generalization of the Hasse-Weil bound, to prove the following curious result about rational functions over finite fields: Let $f(X),g(X)\in\Bbb F_q(X)\setminus\{0\}$ be such that $q$ is sufficiently large relative to $\text{deg}\, f$ and $\text{deg}\, g$, $f(\Bbb F_q)\subset g(\Bbb F_q\cup\{\infty\})$, and for ``most'' $a\in\Bbb F_q\cup\{\infty\}$, $|\{x\in \Bbb F_q:g(x)=g(a)\}|>(\text{deg}\, g)/2$. Then there exists $h(X)\in\Bbb F_q(X)$ such that $f(X)=g(h(X))$. A generalization to multivariate rational functions is also included.
We study the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of zero-cycles of degree $d$ on certain classes of varieties over number fields. We generalise existing results in the literature and prove some results about fibrations over the projective line, where the geometric Brauer group of the generic fibre is not assumed to be finite. The idea is to assume that the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle is the only one for certain fibres and then deduce analogous results for zero-cycles.
We give an interim report on some improvements and generalizations of the Abbott-Kedlaya-Roe method to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate ample hypersurface in a projectively normal toric variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in linear time in $p$. These are illustrated with a number of examples including K3 surfaces, Calabi-Yau threefolds, and a cubic fourfold. The latter example is a non-special cubic fourfold appearing in the Ranestad-Voisin coplanar divisor on moduli space; this verifies that the coplanar divisor is not a Noether-Lefschetz divisor in the sense of Hassett.
We study the integral Hasse principle for affine varieties of the form ax^2+y^2+z^2-xyz=m ,using Brauer-Manin obstruction, and we produce examples whose Brauer groups include 4-torsion elements .We will construct their explicit representatives and compute local invariants in special places.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $k$, let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $F/k$ be a cyclic extension of $p$-power degree. Under not-too-stringent hypotheses we give an interpretation of the $p$-component of the relevant case of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture in terms of integral congruence relations involving the evaluation on appropriate points of $A$ of the ${\rm Gal}(F/k)$-valued height pairing of Mazur and Tate. We then discuss the numerical computation of this pairing, and in particular obtain the first numerical verifications of this conjecture in…
In this paper, we investigate the derivatives of L-functions, in particular, the Riemann zeta function, the Hasse-Weil L-function, the Rankin L-function and the Artin L-function, and survey the relations between the derivatives of L-functions and the geometry and arithmetic of the associated Shimura varieties.
The Hasse-Witt matrix of a hypersurface in ${\mathbb P}^n$ over a finite field of characteristic $p$ gives essentially complete mod $p$ information about the zeta function of the hypersurface. But if the degree $d$ of the hypersurface is $\leq n$, the zeta function is trivial mod $p$ and the Hasse-Witt matrix is zero-by-zero. We generalize a classical formula for the Hasse-Witt matrix to obtain a matrix that gives a nontrivial congruence for the zeta function for all $d$. We also describe the differential equations satisfied by this matrix and prove that it is generically invertible.
We lift the classical Hasse--Weil zeta function of varieties over a finite field to a map of spectra with domain the Grothendieck spectrum of varieties constructed by Campbell and Zakharevich. We use this map to prove that the Grothendieck spectrum of varieties contains nontrivial geometric information in its higher homotopy groups by showing that the map $\mathbb{S} \to K(Var_k)$ induced by the inclusion of $0$-dimensional varieties is not surjective on $π_1$ for a wide range of fields $k$. The methods used in this paper should generalize to lifting other motivic measures to maps of $K$-theor…
Let $L/K$ be an extension of complete discrete valuation fields of positive characteristic, and assume that the residue field of $K$ is perfect. The residue field of $L$ is not assumed to be perfect. In this paper, we show that the generalized Hasse-Herbrand function $ψ_{L/K}^{\mathrm{ab}}$ has properties similar to those of its classical counterpart. In particular, we prove that $ψ_{L/K}^{\mathrm{ab}}$ is continuous, piecewise linear, increasing, convex, and satisfies certain integrality properties.
We consider the Tate cohomology of the circle group acting on the topological Hochschild homology of schemes. We show that in the case of a scheme smooth and proper over a finite field, this cohomology theory naturally gives rise to the cohomological interpretation of the Hasse-Weil zeta function by regularized determinants envisioned by Deninger. In this case, the periodicity of the zeta function is reflected by the periodicity of said cohomology theory, whereas neither is periodic in general.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a global function field $K$ of characteristic $p$. We study the $μ$-invariant appearing in the Iwasawa theory of $A$ over the unramified $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. Ulmer suggests that this invariant is equal to what he calls the dimension of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A$ and that it is indeed the dimension of some canonically defined group scheme. Our first result is to verify his suggestions. He also gives a formula for the dimension of the Tate-Shafarevich group (which is now the $μ$-invariant) in terms of other quantities including the Faltings h…
