We use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate dynamic heterogeneities and the potential energy landscape of the Gaussian core model (GCM). Despite the nearly Gaussian statistics of particles' displacements, the GCM exhibits giant dynamic heterogeneities close to the dynamic transition temperature. The divergence of the four-point susceptibility is quantitatively well described by the inhomogeneous version of the Mode-Coupling theory. Furthermore, the potential energy landscape of the GCM is characterized by a geometric transition and large energy barriers, as expected from the lack of activated, hopping dynamics. These observations demonstrate that all major features of mean-field dynamic criticality can be observed in a physically sound, three-dimensional model.
The critical behaviour of the Ising model in the absence of an external magnetic field can be specified either through spontaneous symmetry breaking (thermal criticality) or through cluster percolation (geometric criticality). We extend this to finite external fields for the case of the Potts' model, showing that a geometric analysis leads to the same first order/second order structure as found in thermodynamic studies. We calculate the Kertész line, separating percolating and non-percolating regimes, both analytically and numerically for the Potts model in presence of an external magnetic fie…
The free energy and the specific heat of the two-dimensional Gaussian random bond Ising model on a square lattice are found with high accuracy using graph expansion method. At low temperatures the specific heat reveals a zero-temperature criticality described by the power law $C\propto T^{1+α}$, with $α= 0.55(8)$. Interpretation of the free energy in terms of independent two-level excitations gives the density of states, that follows a novel power law $ρ(ε)\propto ε^α$ at low energies. An exact high-temperature series for this model up to the term $β^{29}$ is found. A proof that the density of…

The self-organized criticality in Ehrenfest's historical dog-flea model is analyzed by simulating the underlying stochastic process. The fluctuations around the thermal equilibrium in the model are treated as avalanches. We show that the distributions for the fluctuation length differences at subsequent time steps are in the shape of a $q$-Gaussian (the distribution which is obtained naturally in the context of nonextensive statistical mechanics) if one avoids the finite size effects by increasing the system size. We provide a clear numerical evidence that the relation between the exponent $τ$…
We study quantum criticality of spinless fermions on the quasi one dimensional $π$-flux square lattice in cylinder geometry, by using the infinite density matrix renormalization group and abelian bosonization. For a series of the cylinder circumferences $L_y=4n+2=2, 6, \cdots$ with the periodic boundary condition, there are quantum phase transitions from gapped Dirac fermion states to charge density wave (CDW) states. We find that the quantum phase transitions for such circumferences are continuous and belong to the (1+1)-dimensional Ising universality class. On the other hand, when $L_y=4n=4,…
We investigate the geometric properties displayed by the magnetic patterns developing on a two-dimensional Ising system, when a diffusive thermal dynamics is adopted. Such a dynamics is generated by a random walker which diffuses throughout the sites of the lattice, updating the relevant spins. Since the walker is biased towards borders between clusters, the border-sites are more likely to be updated with respect to a non-diffusive dynamics and therefore, we expect the spin configurations to be affected. In particular, by means of the box-counting technique, we measure the fractal dimension of…
The quantum S=1 spin model on the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice is investigated numerically. The nematic and valence-bond-solid (VBS) phases are realized by adjusting the spatial anisotropy and the biquadratic interaction. The phase transition between the nematic and VBS phases is expected to be a continuous one with unconventional critical indices (deconfined criticality). The geometrical character (spatial anisotropy) is taken into account by imposing the screw-boundary condition (Novotny's method). Diagonalizing the finite-size cluster with N \le 20 spins, we observe a clear indi…
Pareto selective forces optimize several targets at the same time, instead of single fitness functions. Systems subjected to these forces evolve towards their Pareto front, a geometrical object akin to the thermodynamical Gibbs surface and whose shape and differential geometry underlie the existence of phase transitions. In this paper we outline the connection between the Pareto front and criticality and critical phase transitions. It is shown how, under definite circumstances, Pareto selective forces drive a system towards a critical ensemble that separates the two phases of a first order pha…
Hybrid evolution protocols, composed of unitary dynamics and repeated, weak or projective measurements, give rise to new, intriguing quantum phenomena, including entanglement phase transitions and unconventional conformal invariance. Defying the complications imposed by the non-linear and stochastic nature of the measurement process, we introduce a scenario of measurement-induced many body evolution, which possesses an exact analytical solution: bosonic Gaussian measurements. The evolution features a competition between the continuous observation of linear boson operators and a free Hamiltonia…
We seek the possibility of a disorder driven transition in a tight-binding lattice with a flat band using complexity parameter approach. Our results indicate the existence of a localized to extended states transition with increasing disorder, insensitive to disorder strength, in weak disorder limit; the spectral statistics at the critical point corresponds to a critical Brownian ensemble, a non-equilibrium universality class of random matrix ensembles, intermediate to Poisson and Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. With increasing disorder, the statistics again approaches Poisson limit indicating a …

We show that a chain of Heisenberg spins interacting with long-range dipolar forces in a magnetic field h perpendicular to the chain exhibits a quantum critical point belonging to the two-dimensional Ising universality class. Within linear spin-wave theory the magnon dispersion for small momenta k is [Delta^2 + v_k^2 k^2]^{1/2}, where Delta^2 \propto |h - h_c| and v_k^2 \propto |ln k|. For fields close to h_c linear spin-wave theory breaks down and we investigate the system using density-matrix and functional renormalization group methods. The Ginzburg regime where non-Gaussian fluctuations ar…
We study the stochastic behavior of heterogeneous diffusion processes with the power-law dependence $D(x)\sim|x|^α$ of the generalized diffusion coefficient encompassing sub- and superdiffusive anomalous diffusion. Based on statistical measures such as the amplitude scatter of the time averaged mean squared displacement of individual realizations, the ergodicity breaking and non-Gaussianity parameters, as well as the probability density function $P(x,t)$ we analyze the weakly non-ergodic character of the heterogeneous diffusion process and, particularly, the degree of irreproducibility of indi…
The influence of dissipation on the fluctuation statistics of the total energy is investigated through both a phenomenological and a stochastic model for dissipative energy-transfer through a cascade of states. In equilibrium the states obey equipartition and the total energy obeys the central limit theorem, giving Gaussian fluctuations. In the presence of dissipation, the fluctuations can be driven non-Gaussian if there is macroscopic energy transfer from large to small scales. We are thus able to equate the non-Gaussian order parameter fluctuations in model equilibrium systems at criticality…
We investigate the dependence of the largest Lyapunov exponent of a $N$-particle self-gravitating ring model at equilibrium with respect to the number of particles and its dependence on energy. This model has a continuous phase-transition from a ferromagnetic to homogeneous phase, and we numerically confirm with large scale simulations the existence of a critical exponent associated to the largest Lyapunov exponent, although at variance with the theoretical estimate. The existence of chaos in the magnetized state evidenced by a positive Lyapunov exponent, even in the thermodynamic limit, is ex…
In quantum statistical mechanics, finite-temperature phase transitions are typically governed by classical field theories. In this context, the role of quantum correlations is unclear: recent contributions have shown how entanglement is typically very short-ranged, and thus uninformative about long-ranged critical correlations. In this work, we show the existence of finite-temperature phase transitions where a broader form of quantum correlation than entanglement, the entropic quantum discord, can display genuine signatures of critical behavior. We consider integrable bosonic field theories in…
We continue our study of the thermodynamic geometry of the spin one model from paper I by probing the state space geometry of the Blume Emery Griffiths (BEG) model, and its limiting case of the Blume Capel model, in their mean field approximation. By accounting for the stochastic variables involved we construct from the thermodynamic state space two complimentary two-dimensional geometries with curvatures $R_m$ and $R_q$ which are shown to encode correlations in the model's two order parameters, namely, the magnetization $m$ and the quadrupole moment $q$. The geometry is investigated in the ze…

Measures of the non-Gaussianity of a random field depend on how accurately one is able to measure the field. If a signal measured at a certain point is to be averaged with its surroundings, or coarse-grained, the magnitude of its non-Gaussian component can vary. In this article, we investigate the variation of the "apparent" non-Gaussianity, as a function of the coarse-graining length, when we measure non-Gaussianity using the statistics of extrema in the field. We derive how the relative difference between maxima and minima -- which is a geometrical measure of the field's non-Gaussianity -- b…
The collective behaviour of statistical systems close to critical points is characterized by an extremely slow dynamics which, in the thermodynamic limit, eventually prevents them from relaxing to an equilibrium state after a change in the thermodynamic control parameters. The non-equilibrium evolution following this change displays some of the features typically observed in glassy materials, such as ageing, and it can be monitored via dynamic susceptibilities and correlation functions of the order parameter, the scaling behaviour of which is characterized by universal exponents, scaling funct…
We define geometric critical exponents for systems that undergo continuous second order classical and quantum phase transitions. These relate scalar quantities on the information theoretic parameter manifolds of such systems, near criticality. We calculate these exponents by approximating the metric and thereby solving geodesic equations analytically, near curvature singularities of two dimensional parameter manifolds. The critical exponents are seen to be the same for both classical and quantum systems that we consider, and we provide evidence about the possible universality of our results.
Three dimensional Dirac semimetals are stable against weak potential disorder, but not against strong disorder. In the language of renormalization group, such stability stems from the irrelevance of weak disorder in the vicinity of the noninteracting Gaussian fixed point. However, beyond a threshold, potential disorder can take Dirac semimetals into a compressible diffusive metallic phase through a quantum phase transition (QPT), where density of states at zero energy, quasiparticle lifetime and metallic conductivity at $T=0$, are finite. Universal behavior of such unconventional QPT is descri…
We numerically analyse the behavior of the full distribution of collective observables in quantum spin chains. While most of previous studies of quantum critical phenomena are limited to the first moments, here we demonstrate how quantum fluctuations at criticality lead to highly non-Gaussian distributions thus violating the central limit theorem. Interestingly, we show that the distributions for different system sizes collapse after scaling on the same curve for a wide range of transitions: first and second order quantum transitions and transitions of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type.…
